Vegas Re-Signs Tomas Hyka And Zac Leslie

May 31, 2018 at 6:45 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The Vegas Golden Knights are keeping busy. The Western Conference champs used today’s break in the Stanley Cup Final to take care of business off the ice. The team announced that they have re-signed impending restricted free agents Tomas Hyka and Zac Leslie to one-year extensions. Hyka’s contract carries the minimum $650K NHL salary, but an elevated $250K AHL salary, while Leslie agreed to a $675K NHL value with a more common $75K  AHL salary. While neither player had a major role for the team this season, the Knights have high hopes for both.

Hyka, 25, was one of Vegas’ first signings as a franchise. The former Czech pro made the jump to North America to sign with the Knights on June 1st of last year and was one of only three players to join the team prior to the Expansion Draft. Hyka showed a lot of promise in his first NHL season, despite only playing in ten games with the Knights. The skilled forward posted outstanding numbers in the AHL, recording 48 points in 50 games, and added another three points in the NHL. Hyka had previously been drafted by the Los Angeles Kings out of the QMJHL in 2012, but was never signed and became free to join Vegas. It’s clear now that the Kings erred in their decision, as Hyka has the makings of a legitimate NHL forward who will likely make the Knights’ roster out of camp next season.

Leslie, another Kings draft pick, did sign with the team after being selected in the sixth round the year after Hyka. However, his offensive tendencies from his junior days in the OHL had failed to translate to the pro level in three seasons in the AHL, so L.A. dealt him to Vegas in early February for nothing more than future considerations. Leslie’s performance improved greatly when he joined the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, as he registered 17 points in his final 27 regular season games – and was a positive player for the first time in his pro career – before kicking in another three points in three postseason games. The 24-year-old rearguard has always been considered a system fit, but may have found the perfect landing spot as a depth option for Vegas.

Vancouver Canucks Sign Michael DiPietro To Entry-Level Contract

May 31, 2018 at 1:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Vancouver Canucks are flush with young goaltenders, and have added another one to their impressive stable. Michael DiPietro has signed his three-year entry-level contract, just weeks after being named the third goaltender for Canada during the IIHF World Championship. DiPietro is expected to return to the OHL next season to finish his junior career, meaning the first year of his contract will slide to the 2019-20 season.

DiPietro, 18, was selected in the third round last summer and played well enough for the Windsor Spitfires to earn Goaltender of the Year honors in the OHL. His .910 save percentage doesn’t jump off the page, but he did it on a weak team that had sold off nearly all of their top assets after winning the Memorial Cup last season. He was shockingly invited to participate with Canada at the World Championship despite his young age, though he didn’t get into a game in the international tournament.

The Canucks have Thatcher Demko spoiling on their AHL squad currently, as he patiently waits for a chance in the NHL. That may come sooner than you think, as though Jacob Markstrom and Anders Nilsson make a fine duo, both are unrestricted free agents within the next two years. When Demko graduates to the NHL (provided no trades happen before then), DiPietro will be his heir apparent for the job with the Utica Comets. Though he’s relatively undersized for a goaltender in today’s NHL, DiPietro exhibits an uncanny ability to either deflect shots into non-danger spots on the ice, or recover quickly to make the second save. His elite reflexes allow him to cover whatever he lacks in size, and he should find success at the next level.

CHL Announces Top Players Awards for 2017-18

May 26, 2018 at 4:05 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

The CHL announced their top player awards Saturday with Alex Barre-Boulet garnering the Sportsnet Player of the Year Award. The 21-year-old who played for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the QMJHL, tallied 53 goals and 116 points to capture the award, beating out Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart and the Sarnia Stings forward Jordan Kyrou. The 5-foot-9 Barre-Boulet, who went undrafted, signed an entry level contract in March with the Tampa Bay Lightning and will likely report to their AHL franchise next year.

While Hart fell short of winning the Player of the Year award, he didn’t walk away without one as the Philadelphia Flyers prospect won the Vaughn Goaltending of the Year award for the second time. The 19-year-old who starred for Team Canada at the World Juniors as well, blew the competition away with a 1.60 GAA in 41 games and putting up an impressive .947 save percentage. He beat out Windsor Spitfires Michael DiPietro and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies’ Samuel Harvey.

The Vegas Golden Knights picked up another award as prospect Nicolas Hague won the Superstore Defenseman of the Year award. The second-round pick in 2017 from the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads totaled 35 goals and 78 points in 67 games last season. He beat out Moose Jaw Warriors Kale Clague and Acadie-Bathurst Titan’s Olivier Galipeau.

Andrei Svechnikov of the Barrie Colts won the Sherwin Williams Top Prospect Award as the Barrie Colts winger put up 40 goals in his rookie year in the OHL. Svenchikov is considered by many to be the second player to come off the board in the 2018 NHL Draft. He beat out Spokane Chiefs defenseman Ty Smith and Halifax Mooseheads Filip Zadina.

Here is a list of all the CHL award winners:

Player of the Year: Alex Barre-Boulet
Defenseman of the Year: Nicolas Hague
Goaltender of the Year: Carter Hart
Rookie of the Year: Alex Lafreniere
Coach of the Year: Drew Bannister
Scholastic Player of the Year: Alexandre Alain
Humanitarian of the Year: Garrett McFadden

OHL Announces 2017-18 All-Star Teams

May 17, 2018 at 5:14 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The OHL is one of the best development leagues in the world when it comes to NHL players, with a huge portion of the best players in the league coming from the Ontario ranks. While being the best of the best at the junior ranks doesn’t by any means guarantee success in professional hockey, it is still a nice stepping stone on the way. Today, the OHL released their first, second and third All-Star teams for 2017-18, and they include quite a few interesting NHL prospects.

2018 Memorial Cup Preview

May 16, 2018 at 11:39 am CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The finale of the 2017-18 major junior season kicks off on Friday with the beginning of the Memorial Cup tournament. Each year, the champions of the three CHL leagues—the OHL, QMJHL, and WHL—and a rotating host team face off in a round-robin tournament with the championship being held on Sunday, May 27. This year’s tourney takes place in Regina, Saskatchewan and features the host Regina Pats of the WHL, the OHL champion Hamilton Bulldogs, the QMJHL champion Acadie-Bathurst Titan, and the WHL champion Swift Current Broncos. Below is a summary of each of the contending squads to help prepare for the upcoming games:

Regina Pats (40-25-7)

The host Pats are not quite on the level of the other three teams, as per usual, but that doesn’t mean they can’t string together enough wins to steal the Memorial Cup away. The Pats finished third in the WHL’s East Division, although their 87 point were good enough for seventh in the league. The team is well acquainted with another Memorial Cup competitor, the Swift Current Broncos, as they finished just behind the eventual champs in the division and fell to them in the first round of the WHL playoffs in seven games. If not for that match-up, Regina had the talent to advance further in the postseason.

The team finished fifth in the league in goals against behind a stout defense featuring three highly regarded NHL prospects: Libor Hajek (NYR), Cale Fleury (MTL), and Josh Mahura (ANA). The offense is led by another standout Ducks prospect, first-rounder Sam Steel (ANA), and has scoring depth in the form of Jake Leschyshyn (VGK), Matthew Bradley (MTL), and draft-eligible Emil Oskanen. The hosts will be far from a pushover in this tournament.

Swift Current Broncos (48-17-7)

The Broncos have the benefit of staying nearby in Saskatchewan and facing a team that they handled all year long in Regina. The team is also on a bit of a hot streak having beaten two division champs, the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Everett Silvertips, en route to their WHL title. Swift Current is a well-rounded squad who finished second in goals against and third in goals for this season. Star center Glen Gawdin (CGY) contributed to both of those marks with both an outstanding 125 points and checking game that earned him over 100 penalty minutes and a +61 rating. Gawdin and partner-in-crime Aleksi Heponiemi (FLA) finished second and third respectively in WHL scoring and form a formidable duo on the team’s top line.

Offensive defenseman Colby Sissons (NJD) and his under-rated pair mate Artyom Minulin are a force themselves on the blue line. However, the key to the Broncos success in the tournament will lie with goaltender Stuart Skinner (EDM). Skinner’s play was incredible in the postseason, as he posted a .932 save percentage and 2.20 GAA in 26 starts. If that level of play continues, Swift Current will be hard to beat.

Hamilton Bulldogs (43-18-7)

The OHL champs were also East Division regular season champs and held the third-best record in the league. They were also third-best in goals against and fifth-best in goals for. Hamilton took their game to the next level in the playoffs though, dropping just five games in four series, including taking down arguably the best team in junior hockey this year, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, in a six-game final series.

The Bulldogs are led by a forward corps that is unrivaled in depth in this tournament: Robert Thomas (STL), Matthew Strome (PHI), Will Bitten (MTL), MacKenzie Entwhistle (ARI), and overage phenom Brandon Saigeon. The only question is whether or not Hamilton has the difference-makers elsewhere in their lineup to keep up in the tournament.

Acadie-Bathurst Titan (43-15-10)

The Titan finished with the second best record and goal differential in the QMJHL and with the Maritimes Division title, but were clearly the best team in the league come playoff time, when they completed two sweeps and lost only four games on their way to a relatively easy championship. Keeper Evan Fitzpatrick (STL) was the star of the show in the postseason, continuing his strong play from the regular season. Forward Antoine Morand (ANA) and potential top-ten pick defenseman Noah Dobson led their respective units, but watch out for Flyers first-rounder German Rubtsov (PHI) to be the key to the Titan’s success in the tournament.

Jordan Kyrou Wins OHL Most Outstanding Player

May 10, 2018 at 12:27 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The St. Louis Blues may have missed the playoffs this season, but they received some good news today when Jordan Kyrou was named the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player and awarded the Red Tilson Trophy. Kyrou, a Blues second-round pick from 2016, registered 109 points in just 56 games this season while also winning a gold medal at the World Junior Championship.

Kyrou is an outstanding skater who dominated the OHL this season, finishing just six points behind Aaron Luchuk for the scoring title despite playing in 12 fewer games. His 70 assists were tied with Morgan Frost for the league lead, helping him become the first Sarnia Sting player to ever win the Red Tilson. The trophy is a prestegious honor, with plenty of past recipients going on to long prosperous NHL careers. Alex DeBrincat, Mitch Marner, Connor McDavid, Connor Brown and Vincent Trocheck are the past five winners, with other names like John Tavares, Eric Lindros and Doug Gilmour all having taken a turn.

While it may be unlikely for Kyrou to duplicate some of those careers, many believe he’s poised to become a difference-maker at the next level. The Blues have several top end prospects ready to break onto the professional scene, with Kyrou leading the charge next season. Whether he begins the year at the AHL level or cracks the Blues out of training camp is still to be seen, but there is little doubt that the spotlight will follow him next season.

Amazingly, it’s not just Kyrou’s offense that is remarked on when scouts take in one of his games. Relentlessly effective in his own zone, he’ll be challenged at the next level to keep up his excellent defensive work ethic and become the two-way player many believe he can be. Junior hockey can sometimes fail to expose weaknesses in players who have a standout ability as Kyrou does in his skating, only to be revealed in the professional ranks against similarly skilled players.

Regardless, the Blues will be happy that Kyrou took the necessary steps forward this season to win the award. Many believed from the start of the year that he would challenge for the scoring title, and had he not spent time away with the Canadian national junior team, he likely would have. Though the Sting were eliminated in the second round of the OHL playoffs, Kyrou will have plenty of other chances in what is expected to be a long career.

Logan Stanley Joins Manitoba Moose For AHL Playoffs

May 7, 2018 at 2:55 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As if the Winnipeg Jets didn’t have enough talent in the system, Logan Stanley has been reassigned to the Manitoba Moose a week after his Kitchener Rangers were eliminated from the OHL playoffs. Stanley will join the Moose during their Calder Cup run, which has hit a snag against the Rockford IceHogs in the second round. Manitoba is down 0-2 in the series, which continues Wednesday evening.

Manitoba already has Sami Niku, the 21-year old seventh-round pick fresh off being named the AHL Defenseman of the Year, but will add another immensely talented blueliner for their playoff run. The 19-year old Stanley is a bit different than many of his contemporaries, standing 6’7″ 231-lbs and armed with a bomb of a shot. The monstrous defender put up 42 points in 61 games this season for the Rangers, adding another 16 in 19 playoff contests.

Stanley isn’t just big, he’s talented with the puck on his stick and can move it quickly to forwards up the ice. Selected in the first-round of the 2016 draft, he dealt with plenty of injuries last season but seemed to take a big step forward this year. Though he likely won’t be manning the Winnipeg blue line any time soon, there is obvious NHL upside in his play and even his floor should be good enough to be an asset on the penalty kill. We’ll see if he gets into any AHL games for the Moose as they basically are in do-or-die situations for the rest of the series.

Mark Hunter Making GM Choice Difficult For Maple Leafs

May 6, 2018 at 9:59 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

With most people under the belief that with former Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello out of the picture now, the Maple Leafs are likely to go with their long-time plan of naming GM-in-waiting Kyle Dubas as their next general manager.

However, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet suggests that may not be the case. During a segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Kypreos says that many executives around the league believe that assistant general manager Mark Hunter may be the better choice. Elliotte Friedman reported on the same broadcast that team president Brendan Shanahan and Hunter met Friday to discuss the opening.

“A lot of executives I’ve spoken with believe that when it comes to the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, it goes in the favour of Mark Hunter, for no other reason than his resume,” said Kypreos.

The 55-year-old Hunter has quite a different resume than the 32-year-old prodigy Dubas. The 12-year NHL veteran has been a successful coach, owned, and ran the OHL’s London Knights and has been an executive with the Maple Leafs since 2014. Dubas, who also joined the organization in 2014, was the general manager of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

“A lot of executives still believe that Kyle Dubas pales in comparison to the years of experience and multiple Memorial Cups [of Hunter],” Kyreos said. “The issue for Brendan Shanahan going forward is that if he decides to go with Kyle Dubas, he runs the risk of losing Mark Hunter, who would have a tough time answering to Dubas.”

With two solid candidates for the highly-coveted position, however, it’s likely the team will lose one executive at some point if they don’t get the position.

Blackhawks Sign German Forward Dominik Kahun

April 28, 2018 at 1:10 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

As expected for some time, Dominik Kahun has turned his success in his native Germany and at the 2018 Winter Olympics into his first NHL contract. The Athletic’s Scott Powers reports that the Chicago Blackhawks have signed Kahun to an entry-level deal. Both Kahun and the Blackhawks have confirmed the contract and CapFriendly reports that it is a two-year deal worth the ELC-max $925 base salary, but nothing has been publicly announced. Chicago has long been considered the favorite to sign Kahun and could be willing to give the affordable talent an NHL look sooner rather than later.

The 22-year-old forward is coming off quite the season. His DEL team, EHC Munchen, were league champions, as Kahun finished third in scoring with 41 points in 42 games, and Team Germany made an unlikely run to a silver medal at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang behind Kahun’s five points in seven games. All around, this has been the best season of Kahun’s career and he has caught the eye of many around the hockey world.

Now, the next test will be to see if his talent translates to the NHL. This year’s NHL-less Olympics and certainly the DEL are not comparable to the best hockey league in the world. However, Kahun also had past success in the OHL and at the World Juniors, which are better predictors of NHL success. What Kahun lacks in exceptional size, speed, or strength, he makes up for with great vision and intelligence and next-level stick skills. If Kahun continues to work hard and strive for success, expect him to find immediate success in the AHL and perhaps in Chicago as well.

Los Angeles Kings Sign Matthew Villalta

April 27, 2018 at 1:59 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Los Angeles Kings have added another interesting goaltending prospect to the organization, signing Matthew Villalta to a three-year entry-level contract. Villalta is currently playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL’s Western Conference Final.

Villalta, 18, was selected in the third round in last June’s draft and led the OHL in wins this season with 40. Though his other numbers took a slight step backwards, ending with a .908 save percentage and 2.58 GAA, he’s still expected to grow into a formidable goaltending prospect in the coming years. Originally listed at 165 lbs, the Kings now have Villalta all the way up to 181 in their press release and there could be even more size coming as the 6’2″ goaltender continues to mature physically.

The Kings have placed a huge emphasis on their goaltending pipeline in the recent years, acquiring Jack Campbell from the Dallas Stars organization, signing Cal Petersen after he failed to reach an agreement with the Buffalo Sabres, and inking Cole Kehler earlier this season out of the WHL. Though there is no doubt that Jonathan Quick is the starter for the foreseeable future, he’ll turn 33 next season and can’t be relied on forever.

Villalta will almost certainly return to the OHL next season where he and the Greyhounds should still be among the best teams in the league. If they aren’t able to secure a Memorial Cup berth this season, there’s no reason to believe they can’t next year.
