Oliver Wahlstrom Loaned To Team USA

USA Hockey will be getting their own professional reinforcement for the upcoming World Junior tournament, as Oliver Wahlstrom has been loaned from the New York Islanders. Wahlstrom has played in nine games with the Islanders but also has 20 AHL contests under his belt this season. GM Lou Lamoriello announced today that Noah Dobson will not be loaned to Team Canada.

Wahlstrom, 19, gets another chance to take home gold at the event after winning a silver medal last season with Team USA. The talented winger has been a top prospect in the country for years now, armed with an incredible shot and nose for the net. That ability hasn’t landed him a point at the NHL level so far, but just the experience of playing with the best in the world should help him when he’s matched up against junior competition.

Selection camp is underway in Plymouth for the squad, with Wahlstrom joining several other returning players from the silver medal squad.

Minor Transactions: 12/16/19

Another week begins in the NHL with five games this evening, including two top tier Western Conference matchups. The St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche battle for the top seed in the Central Division, while the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars try to keep pace with the rest of their divisions. As always we’ll keep track of all the minor moves right here.

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled J.C. Beaudin and Erik Brannstrom from the minor leagues, as they prepare for action against the Florida Panthers tonight. Brannstrom, the big return for Mark Stone last season, has now played in 23 games this season with the Senators and has two points.
  • Martin Marincin and Timothy Liljregren have both been recalled by the Toronto Maple Leafs, raising concern about the injury Tyson Barrie sustained over the weekend. X-rays on Barrie’s ankle were negative, but both defensemen have been recalled under emergency conditions. Liljegren, 20, would be playing in his first NHL game if he suits up for the Maple Leafs.
  • Tom Kuhnhackl has been recalled by the New York Islanders, after playing in four games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The veteran forward is still looking for his first NHL point of the season after playing in six games earlier this year.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have swapped Guillaume Brisebois for Jalen Chatfield again, with the latter coming to the NHL today. Chatfield has still not made his debut with the Canucks yet, despite being recalled every few days this month.
  • Sam Carrick and Jacob Larsson have both been recalled by the Anaheim Ducks, while Josh Mahura is on his way back to the AHL. The 22-year old Larsson has played 25 games with the Ducks this season, but found himself demoted to the minor leagues at the beginning of the month.
  • The Minnesota Wild have announced a flurry of moves, highlighted by the placement of Joel Eriksson Ek on injured reserve. The young center has been sidelined recently, but he will officially take a seat for the next ten days or more as he nurses an upper-body injury. Fortunately, the Wild have been getting healthier elsewhere in the lineup, with starting goalie Devan Dubnyk among those slated for a return. As a result, young Kaapo Kahkonen has been reassigned to AHL Iowa. Filling the two newly vacated roster spots are forwards Nico Sturm and Luke Johnson. Sturm, a highly sought-after college free agent last year, has been a solid two-way contributor in the AHL this season. Johnson has been limited by injury to just ten AHL games this year, but returns to Minnesota after playing in 15 games with the Wild last season.
  • In one of the more common moves of this season so far, Brian Gibbons is on the move again, this time going to Carolina from AHL Charlotte. The veteran forward has been back and forth all year, logging 13 games wth the Hurricanes and 14 with the Checkers.

Snapshots: Sorokin, Kapanen, Lapointe

The New York Islanders are hoping that top goalie prospect Ilya Sorokin will be coming over to North America sooner rather than later, but his KHL team is trying to make sure that doesn’t happen. Aivis Kalnins reports that CSKA Moscow has made a long-term contract offer to Sorokin, though at this point that doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

The fact that news of the offer made it out might also be a negotiating tactic for Sorokin, who is now 24 and has dominated the KHL for years. A third-round pick in 2014, Sorokin would be held to the entry-level system when he comes over, limiting his earning potential. If he signed that one-year ELC before the end of this season–his current deal in the KHL expires in April–he could become a restricted free agent and negotiate a more expensive deal. That’s exactly what Nikita Gusev did last season, and ended up signing a two-year, $9MM deal with the New Jersey Devils before playing a game in the NHL.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have things back on track under new head coach Sheldon Keefe, but still don’t have an answer for their lack of consistent backup goaltending. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet gives his thoughts on some of the potential options, but isn’t convinced they are going to do anything. Friedman does note however that the Maple Leafs could trade Kasperi Kapanen easily if they ever decided to, though currently don’t want to do that. Kapanen, 23, has turned into an extremely valuable two-way player for the Maple Leafs.
  • The Montreal Canadiens announced that Guy Lapointe has been diagnosed with oral cancer. The physicians treating the Hall of Fame defenseman included a note that it has a very high cure rate and will start treatment in the coming weeks. Everyone at PHR wants to extend our best wishes to Guy and the Lapointe family.

New York Islanders Looking For Scoring Help

The New York Islanders are about the last organization in the NHL you’ll hear many rumors from, given the tight-lipped nature of any Lou Lamoriello-led front office. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet though reports that the team is looking for “a scorer,” but doesn’t go into any detail on who they may be targeting.

The Islanders are currently sitting third in the Eastern Conference with 42 points and a 20-7-2 record, but have done it once again on the back of tight defense and solid goaltending. The team ranks among the lowest-scoring groups in the league with just 86 goals for through 29 games, but have limited opponents to just 69 over the same stretch, easily the best in the NHL.

Just like last season, when the team’s leading scorer Mathew Barzal had just 62 points in 82 games, the Islanders under Barry Trotz refuse to sell out for offense and are willing to win with an extremely structured system. That said, there’s always room for a little more skill up front when it gets to the playoffs.

If the Islanders are on the hunt for another forward, they have plenty of ammunition. The team owns all of their draft picks and have several top-end prospects developing in the minors or junior. They also have Joshua Ho-Sang still waiting for a trade out of the organization, though it’s unclear what value if any he has at this point. Arthur Staple of The Athletic (subscription required) recently examined several options both internal and external that could help the team’s forward group, including the complicated scenario that would be acquiring Taylor Hall.

One of the biggest weapons that Lamoriello has at his disposal this season is a simple one–cap space. The Islanders left enough room in the offseason to bring in a potential big name like Artemi Panarin or Sergei Bobrovsky, and have plenty left over after missing on both. The team could easily fit in any of the projected trade deadline rentals with room to spare.

Trade Rumors: Hall, Galchenyuk, Penguins

While New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero has stated that he won’t pigeonhole teams into one specific type of return for superstar winger Taylor Hall, it’s safe to say that the eventual trade won’t be a one-for-one deal like the infamous trade that sent Hall to New Jersey in the first place. In fact, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports that the belief around the league is that it will take at least four pieces to acquire Hall. That could be current NHL players, contracted prospects, prospect signing rights, or draft picks, but one way or another it seems that the Devils are seeking a large return not just in quality but in quantity for their best player. Of course, Johnston also adds that conversations thus far have mostly been one-sided, with Shero encouraging teams to make offers, but not yet diving in with any one suitor. That has not stopped rampant speculation though that the Colorado Avalanche are the heavy favorites to land Hall, given their contender status, ample cap space, and depth in picks and prospects. Not only does Johnston echo this sentiment, but he states that there is some belief that the Avs intend to try to land Hall prior to the league’s holiday trade freeze in late December. Other teams rumored to be in the mix include the Arizona Coyotes, New York Islanders, and a possible return to the Edmonton Oilers. But in all likelihood, the only team without some interest in having the Hart Trophy winner on their roster after the trade deadline is New Jersey.

  • Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that another name that has hit the rumor mill is Pittsburgh Penguins forward Alex Galchenyuk. Galchenyuk has been a poor fit in Pittsburgh since coming over in the Phil Kessel trade this summer, an idea all but confirmed by GM Jim Rutherford in recent comments about the team being unsure of his place in a healthy lineup. The impending UFA is being shopped and Friedman states that at least one team confirmed to be interested is the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres have been on the hunt for forward help all season and it makes sense that they could be intrigued by buying low on Galchenyuk. However, Buffalo is currently outside the playoff picture, tied for tenth in the Eastern Conference. If they were to acquire Galchenyuk, it would likely be a scenario that required an extension agreement. This could complicate the process and could lead the Penguins to consider other teams looking for a pure rental and able to make the deal sooner rather than later.
  • Of course, the question would then become what the Penguins do next. Rutherford is not the type to squander excess cap space and would look to use Galchenyuk’s $4.9MM absence to his advantage. While the Penguins are currently short-handed on the blue line without the injured Brian Dumoulin, it is doubtful that they would have any interest in taking back a long-term defenseman. Instead, the Penguins could seek a rental defenseman (Buffalo’s Marco Scandella or Zach Bogosian perhaps?) or could try to add a forward who can replace the production that they expected from Galchenyuk this season. If the Penguins opt to replace Galchenyuk in a separate deal, the Rangers’ Chris Kreider and Senators’ Vladislav Namestnikov are players with similar cap hits and production profiles to Galchenyuk who will be available.

The NHL has just five games on the schedule for this evening, including Phil Kessel’s return to Pittsburgh and a matchup of two last place teams in New Jersey. As teams prepare for a big weekend, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves right here.

  • The Florida Panthers have recalled Aleksi Saarela for the first time since acquiring him from the Chicago Blackhawks in late-October. Saarela has now amazingly been traded three times in his short career but is still waiting for his first NHL opportunity. The 22-year old was picked in the third round by the New York Rangers and was originally part of the deal for Eric Staal in 2016.
  • Jonathan Davidsson, another one of the Ottawa Senators’ top prospects, has been recalled to the NHL once again. The 22-year old forward was part of the return for Matt Duchene last season and made his debut for the club earlier this year.
  • Because the Tampa Bay Lightning aren’t playing today, they’ve sent Cory Conacher back to the minor leagues. Conacher has served as injury insurance the last while for the Lightning, but Alex Killorn was healthy enough to suit up last night.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Filip Zadina as expected, after giving him the week with the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Red Wings had several days off between games, during which Zadina played another AHL game to stay fresh.
  • Boo Nieves is on his way back to the AHL, assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack by the New York Rangers today. Nieves has played four games in the NHL this season but is still more of a minor league depth option at this point.
  • Cameron Schilling has been returned to the Manitoba Moose without playing in a single game for the Winnipeg Jets. The 31-year old defenseman has just ten NHL games over his career, four of which came last season with the Jets.
  • Otto Koivula has been returned to the AHL after playing fewer than five minutes in his last game for the New York Islanders. The young forward is an interesting prospect, but was seeing so little ice time in his first NHL season that the minor leagues may still be best for his development.
  • Nikolay Goldobin has been returned to the AHL after playing just a single game for the Vancouver Canucks since his recall two weeks ago. The 24-year old has been great at the minor league level once again, but can’t seem to get himself a chance at the NHL.

Minor Transactions: 12/05/19

The Metropolitan Division kept on rolling last night, with wins by both the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. That group has five teams that would be divisional playoff seeds in the Atlantic, meaning they are running away with the wild card positions at the moment. With nine games on the schedule for tonight, we’ll see if the other Metro teams can keep pace.

  • The Ottawa Senators have sent Erik Brannstrom and Marcus Hogberg back to the AHL, probably a good decision for the development of their young defenseman at this point. Brannstrom was the prize for Mark Stone last season and needs to grow into that first-pairing option that the Senators believed he could be.
  • Cory Conacher has been brought right back to the Tampa Bay Lightning today, though he wasn’t in the morning skate lines as the group prepares for their game against the Minnesota Wild.
  • Tom Kuhnhackl has been placed on long-term injured reserve in order to get him a conditioning stint with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, which actually signals that the veteran forward is getting closer to a return. Kuhnhackl has played just six games for the New York Islanders this season and is still looking for his first point.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have sent Logan O’Connor back to the minor leagues, suggesting that Gabriel Landeskog might be close to returning. The captain has been out for the last several weeks, but after Mikko Rantanen’s recent return the Avalanche are getting closer to full strength.
  • Matt Tennyson has been placed on injured reserve by the New Jersey Devils, while Jack Hughes returned to practice. The Devils are in a state of turmoil after firing head coach John Hynes, but will hopefully get their star forward into the lineup.

Nick Leddy Expected To Return To The Lineup Tonight

  • Nick Leddy’s absence from the Islanders lineup appears to be a short-lived one. Newsday’s Andrew Gross notes (Twitter link) that the defenseman is expected to return to the lineup tonight after missing Wednesday’s game due to a lower-body injury.  He’ll likely take the place of Noah Dobson in the lineup; the junior-aged defender is sitting at just seven games played so far this season which means the first year of his entry-level deal has not been burned yet.

Poll: Which Teams Will Buck The Thanksgiving Playoff Trend In 2019-20?

Just how important is playoff position in just the second month of the regular season? Very, if you look at recent results. Over the past six years, more than 70% of teams in a playoff position at American Thanksgiving have held on to their spot. While last year was slightly below the mark – 11 of 16 teams (69%) in a playoff position on November 22 qualified – the standings at the time were even more predictive than usual. The Lightning, Predators, Flames, Maple Leafs, Jets, and Sharks all finished in the same divisional seed that they occupied at Thanksgiving.

So who were the outliers in 2018-19? Obviously, the St. Louis Blues’ return from the basement of the league standings to win the Stanley Cup is a story that will stand the test of time. However, four other clubs also turned their seasons around: the Islanders, Penguins, Hurricanes, and Golden Knights. And the teams whose seasons took a turn for the worse: the Sabres, Wild, Rangers, Canadiens, and Ducks. Ironically, the Canadiens were narrowly inside the playoff window on Thanksgiving and ended up just barely outside in the spring. Meanwhile, the Ducks, Oilers, and Coyotes were all tied for the lowest playoff-qualifying record on Thanksgiving, with the Ducks getting the tiebreaker at the time, and all three failed to qualify for the postseason.

This season has gotten off to an unpredictable start, which could potentially threaten to derail the Thanksgiving trend. Several teams considered Cup contenders are currently outside the playoff picture, while multiple surprises currently occupy a spot. With Thanksgiving arriving tomorrow, this is the current status of the NHL standings (reminder – points percentage is the ideal way of viewing NHL standings):

2018-19 playoff teams jump off the page as potential candidates to disrupt the status quo. Particularly in the Pacific Division, it is hard to image none of the Golden Knights – who beat the Thanksgiving odds last year – the Sharks or the Flames will make the playoffs, especially as they look up at the Oilers, Coyotes, and Canucks.  There could also be hope in West for the Ducks and Blackhawks, who sit at .500 currently. Over in the East, the Maple Leafs stick out like a sore thumb among non-playoff teams and could be line for improvement following their coaching change. But will it be enough given their difficult start? The Canadiens will also hope for a reverse of fortunes from last year, going from first team out in the conference at Thanksgiving to in the postseason come April. The Sabres have started hot and collapsed two years in a row, but there is still time for them to turn things back around. All three Atlantic clubs see a Panthers team with plenty of problems ahead of them in the standings right now. Meanwhile, the Rangers and Blue Jackets will look to make an unlikely run to the postseason as they chase down the Flyers.

Snapshots: Three Stars, Draft Rankings, McKee

The NHL has released their Three Stars for last week and once again a member of the Boston Bruins “Perfection Line” has taken the top spot. Brad Marchand is the first star after a seven-point week, taking him to 39 on the season in just 23 games. Marchand also leads the NHL in +/- with a +17 rating and looks like he could be in legitimate contention for the Hart Trophy this season.

Second and third place go to Connor McDavid and Brock Nelson respectively after each posted four-goal weeks. While Nelson doesn’t get quite the same press as a player like McDavid, he has still been quite effective for the New York Islanders this season with 19 points in 21 games including four game-winning goals.

  • Alexis Lafreniere may be the presumptive first-overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, but Craig Button of TSN argues that Quinton Byfield and Yaroslav Askarov should both be considered contenders for the spot. Button contends that if a team really values the center position Byfield should be the pick, going so far as to say he “can’t imagine a scenario” where a center-needy team doesn’t go with the 6’4″ pivot. Askarov meanwhile is the best goaltending draft prospect since Carey Price according to Button.
  • The Kitchener Rangers have fired head coach and former NHL defenseman Jay McKee, naming general manager Mike McKenzie the interim bench boss. McKee, who played over 800 games in the NHL, took over as head coach of the OHL’s Rangers in 2016 and took them to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons.
