Metropolitan Notes: Hall, Cullen, Islanders

While Taylor Hall will be joining a new team in a new conference as a result of his trade to New Jersey on Wednesday, he will at least be reunited with a familiar face in Adam Henrique, writes Chris Ryan of NJ.com.  The two played together, often on the same line with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires from 2007-2010.  Hall and Henrique will likely get to play together again with the Devils on a new look top line next season.

  • The Penguins are still waiting to hear back whether or not C Matt Cullen will be re-signing them, according to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Pittsburgh hasn’t given him a deadline to make his decision.  Cullen is ranked 38th on our Top 50 UFA list.
  • Ownership of the New York Islanders officially changed hands yesterday as Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky took over from Charles Wang, who retains a minority ownership in the team. Despite the change in team control, the team will not be making any changes behind the bench or in management, writes Arthur Staple of Newsday.  The new owners aren’t wasting any time either as Malkin spoke to Andrew Ladd during his visit on Thursday in the free agent interview period.  Ladd quickly signed with the Isles on Friday, inking a seven year, $38.5MM deal.

Islanders Sign P-A Parenteau

The New York Islanders have signed RW P-A Parenteau to a one year, $1.25MM contract, reports Newsday’s Arthur Staple.  Parenteau returns to the team where his NHL career really took off, as he spent two years with the team from 2010-2012.

Parenteau spent last year with Toronto after receiving a buyout from the Canadiens in the 2015 offseason (he will earn $1.33MM from Montreal this year as part of that).  He had a nice bounce back campaign with the Leafs, collecting 20 goals and 21 assists in 77 games while playing 16:16 per night.  He was expected to be dealt before the trade deadline but an injury threw a wrench into those plans.

Parenteau has played in 424 career NHL games with the Blackhawks, Rangers, Islanders, Avalanche, Canadiens, and Maple Leafs, collecting 101 goals and 167 assists.  He was ranked 24th on our Top 50 UFA list.

With the Islanders, Parenteau spent a lot of time with John Tavares.  He could be a candidate to play with him again, replacing Kyle Okposo who signed with Buffalo yesterday.

With the signing, the Islanders sit roughly $4.7MM under the salary cap, according to Cap Friendly.

New York Islanders Sign Jason Chimera

According to a report from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, free agent winger Jason Chimera has signed on with the New York Islanders for two seasons at an annual salary of $2.25MM.

Chimera had a bounce back season with Washington in 2015-16.  In 82 games, the speedy winger had 20 goals and 20 assists.  He was a bit quieter in the playoffs, tallying just a goal and an assist in 12 postseason contests.

The fact that Chimera got a multi-year deal is interesting as he’s subject to the 35+ rule that means that if Chimera were to retire following 2016-17, the Islanders would still be responsible for his full cap hit.

In his 15 years, Chimera has played in a total of 951 games with Edmonton, Columbus, and Washington.  He has 163 goals and 206 assists for his career.

Islanders Sign Andrew Ladd To 7-Year Deal

According to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, via Elliotte Friedman, the New York Islanders have signed free agent forward Andrew Ladd to a seven-year contract. Aaron Ward adds that the deal is worth a total of $38.5MM.

Ladd gives the Islanders a top six replacement for Frans Nielsen, who signed with Detroit earlier today.  Last season, he picked up 25 goals and 21 assists in 78 games between Winnipeg and Chicago, while adding a goal and an assist in seven postseason contests with the Hawks.

The seven year term comes as a bit of a surprise as the deal will take him through his age 38 season.  However, it’s likely that the Islanders got a bit of a cheaper cap hit in exchange for the longer term as it was believed he was seeking a $6MM or higher AAV.

In his career, Ladd has played in 769 games with the Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Thrashers, and Jets, scoring 210 goals and 256 assists.

Free Agent Profile: Frans Nielsen

When you talk about free agents from Long Island this offseason, the conversation immediately goes to Kyle Okposo, the 28-year old winger who tied Steven Stamkos in points last season, or to Matt Martin, the bang-and-crash bottom six guy who everyone seems to want to add. Mostly forgotten, there is another UFA coming out of New York who should be commanding some attention.

Frans Nielsen has always been overlooked, perhaps because of his slender frame, or his Danish heritage – Denmark isn’t known for a flood of NHL players, though there have been some excellent ones – starting on draft day when he was selected deep into the third round. Nielsen has never earned more than $2.75MM in a single season, choosing to re-sign with the team who drafted him well before he became an unrestricted free agent in 2012.

He shouldn’t be overlooked any longer, as the 32-year old has put together an excellent career and comes into this offseason as a top-5 free agent, now that Stamkos and Yandle have both signed.

Potential Suitors

With, perhaps fittingly, almost no news coming out about Nielsen speaking with teams other than the Islanders, it’s a bit of a mystery where the Dane will finally end up.  There are however a few teams who seem to fit with his ability and position perfectly.

In our UFA piece we had Nielsen going to the Red Wings, and after Stamkos re-signed this afternoon that seems even more a possibility.  The club already has a young, up and coming center in Dylan Larkin who may be ready for the top line as soon as next season, so may not want to commit to the long-term deal that the other top option, David Backes, is surely to command.

While the Minnesota Wild have a young group of forwards who have shown the ability to play in the top six, they’ve also experimented with both Charlie Coyle and Mikael Granlund on the wing. If they think they’re more suited there, Nielsen makes a good choice as a steady veteran to put between them on the second line.

Expected Contract

Nielsen will be overlooked no more, as he hits this summer looking for one last big deal to finish his career on. If Backes goes early and the rest of the league views him as the next best option down the middle (which they should), he’ll look for a four or five year deal somewhere between $4.5 and $5MM per season.  If he settles for a shorter term, he might be able to push just above that $5MM mark, but it would be very surprising to see him get close to $6MM.

Free Agent Profile: Andrew Ladd

If you’re looking for intangibles like playoff experience, leadership and grit, Andrew Ladd might be your highest ranked free agent. It doesn’t hurt that the two-time Stanley Cup champion is also a five-time twenty goal scorer and has put up at least 46 points in six straight seasons. The big winger is a work horse, averaging close to twenty minutes a night and playing against the other teams’ top forwards.

Just 30-years old, Ladd has a lot more good hockey left in him and will look to score a big contract this summer. With over 200 career goals, and almost no recent injury history teams won’t be too afraid of giving him a long-term deal to help lead their club.  We ranked him at #6 on our Top 50 UFA list.

Potential Suitors

After a report came out Tuesday morning listing the Islanders, Canadiens, Lightning and Predators as four of the teams pursuing Ladd, many fans started to imagine him as part of their squad. The Maple Ridge, BC native has always been thought of as a leader, wearing the ’C’ for the Winnipeg Jets until his mid-season trade last year.

If the Canadiens are serious, Ladd would become the second former Blackhawk added this offseason as they recently signed Andrew Shaw to a six-year deal after acquiring his rights at the draft. While Montreal currently has Max Pacioretty entrenched as the top line left winger, Ladd could provide a huge upgrade on the second line.  Skating alongside Alex Galchenyuk (if Montreal decides he’s still a center) for instance could make a pretty imposing duo for teams to try and control.

The Lightning are an interesting club to hear, as they would presumably be putting all their effort into re-signing top free agent Steven Stamkos. The could possibly be a backup plan for the team if they’re to lose their current captain. As the season wore on Stamkos played more and more on the wing, a spot that Ladd could fill alongside Tyler Johnson.

Expected Contract

Despite coming off a somewhat down year, we estimated Ladd’s contract at six years, $37.5MM.  That would give him an AAV of $6.25MM, a substantial upgrade over his last deal that paid him $4.4MM per season. Early reports are that the Ladd camp is playing things slowly, waiting for the Stamkos situation to resolve itself before really throwing himself to the wolves.

As teams miss on the top names of Stamkos, Milan Lucic and Kyle Okposo, some may end up getting into a bidding war for Ladd. Don’t be surprised if you hear potential numbers that break $40MM in regards to Ladd, though whichever team signs him may regret it when he’s a 35-year old. If he brings another Stanley Cup in the meantime, they might just not care that much.

It’s that time of year again in the NHL, where rumors and speculation run rampant. Last night, after a report from Jimmy Murphy of VICE Sports indicated the Bruins were preparing an offer sheet for Jets’ defenceman Jacob Trouba, the Twitterverse went wild with speculation and conjecture. If the Bruins are indeed preparing a sheet, it would have to be for the maximum compensation, four first-round picks, as the team doesn’t own their second or third rounders for 2017. A tough pill to swallow to be sure, even if Trouba is the top pairing blueliner they think he is.  More news about the upcoming free agent market:

  • Darren Dreger wakes us this morning with a report that the Islanders, Canadiens, Lightning and Predators are all in the hunt for Andrew Ladd. As the Stamkos Extravaganza begins (and quite possibly ends) this Friday, the Ladd camp is moving slowly and assessing possible fits before really getting into any negotiations with teams.
  • Matt Martin, another interesting name on the market is getting a lot of calls, writes Arthur Staple of Newsday. Detroit, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Los Angeles and Calgary have all reached out already, making the bottom-six winger one to watch over the next few days.
  • Among the chatter yesterday was talk of Milan Lucic having agreed to a deal with the Edmonton Oilers, and while this seems like it’s a little ahead of itself, it’s at least something to keep an eye on. Gene Principe of Sportsnet, among others, reported that he’s heard Lucic is probably headed to Edmonton, but can’t guarantee it.

Free Agent Focus: New York Islanders

The New York Islanders got back to the postseason in 2015-16, making it two straight years they’ve gotten there. The John Capuano coached team went 45-27-10 in the regular season, and advanced past the Florida Panthers before getting knocked out by the Tampa Bay Lightning. As superstar John Tavares continues to crawl toward his eventual free agency – he has two remaining seasons at $5.5MM – the team has quite a few big names to worry about this offseason.  Here’s a look at their upcoming free agents:

Key Restricted Free Agent: C Ryan Strome – The elder Strome brother and former 5th overall pick, Ryan had a somewhat disappointing season for the Isles this year. After putting up 17 goals and 50 points in his sophomore year in 2014-15, Strome only collected 28 this season while seeing less powerplay time and experiencing a drop-off in possession metrics.

Strome will turn 23 in less than a month, and is coming off his entry-level contract; he’ll be looking for a bridge deal like the one Nazem Kadri signed in 2013.  While Kadri was coming off a stronger season, he didn’t have as much history in the league as Strome does now. That deal lasted two years at $2.9MM, and while Strome might not hit that mark he’s expected to get over $2MM.

Other RFAs: Alan Quine, Shane Prince, Scott Mayfield, Christopher Gibson, Jean-Francois Berube

Key Unrestricted Free Agent: RW Kyle Okposo – After putting up a huge season, Okposo is in line for a big pay raise. The former seventh overall pick put up 64 points in 79 games, continuing what has been very strong play since 2013-14. He’s racked up 184 points during that time, ranking him 17th overall in PPG over that span among players with at least 50 GP. Coming in ahead of players like Corey Perry, Phil Kessel and Jonathan Toews, Okposo is going to get a huge contract this offseason.

As reported earlier today, it looks like the Islanders are set to move on from the winger, with GM Garth Snow wishing him luck in the future. For the team, they’ll be losing their second highest scorer and a player who has been a big part of the turnaround in New York. With the third highest, center Frans Nielsen, also being a UFA this summer the Isles are at risk of losing a substantial part of their offense on July 1st.

Other UFA: Nielsen, Eric Boulton, Matt Martin, Steve Bernier, Brian Strait, Marek Zidlicky

Projected Cap Space: $13MM, 18 players under contract.

While the Islanders seem to have their defense corps set up for next year, their forward group will have to rely on some young talent stepping up if they don’t make any big free agent splashes. 24-year old Brock Nelson put up an impressive 26 goals and will be expected to take on an even bigger role with the departures of Okposo and Nielsen.

The goaltending tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss performed admirably this season, but the team may look to move one of them at some point, with Greiss entering his final contract year and Halak only with two remaining.  As they both enter their thirties, the team may look to move on as they have a number of solid prospects in the system.
