Atlantic Notes: Boston’s Injuries, Lamoriello, Red Wings

May 10, 2018 at 8:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As is common following a team being eliminated from the playoffs, the list of players that played through an injury gets revealed.  Joe Haggerty of NBC Sports Boston provided that list for the Bruins and it’s quite a lengthy one.  Most notably among them is center Patrice Bergeron, who revealed that he has been dealing with a lingering groin issue and while he hopes it will clear itself up with rest and rehab, he did acknowledge that surgery this summer is a possibility.

Other players that could be headed under the knife are defenseman Zdeno Chara (shoulder) and center Riley Nash (hip) while winger Noel Acciari (hernia) confirmed he will have surgery.  Meanwhile, defenseman Torey Krug’s fractured ankle will have him in a walking boot for the next two months so his postseason would have been over even if the Bruins had advanced.  On top of those, David Backes (concussion), Brad Marchand (groin), and Jake DeBrusk (shoulder) have injuries that won’t require any offseason surgeries.  It’s quite the list of walking wounded in Boston.

More from around the Atlantic:

  • While now-former Maple Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello publicly stated that he intended to fulfill the advisory role in his contract, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports (subscription required) that he has no real intention of doing so. This comes on the heels of speculation earlier this week that the Islanders could be a landing spot for the 75-year-old, something that Staple suggests is a possibility as well.  If that indeed happens, Toronto will not be entitled to any compensation as that was put to an end back in January of 2016.
  • The Red Wings have a vacancy to fill between the pipes this summer and Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that Blues netminder Carter Hutton is someone that they have interest in. Hutton is coming off of a career season that saw him post a 2.09 GAA and a .931 SV% in 32 appearances and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.  However, he’ll undoubtedly be seeking a significant raise on the two-year, $2.25MM deal he just completed and Detroit is a team that is typically close to the Upper Limit of the salary cap so it will be interesting to see if there is a number that would work for both sides.

Latest On Toronto Maple Leafs’ Pursuit Of Igor Ozhiganov

May 10, 2018 at 4:38 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

For several months, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been the expected landing spot of KHL defenseman Igor Ozhiganov. That feeling has stemmed from the visit that Lou Lamoriello and Mike Babcock took in August of 2017, to meet with Ozhiganov and attempt to recruit him to Toronto. It’s the same playbook they used to land Nikita Zaitsev in the summer of 2016, a player they quickly extended after a solid first season.

Ozhiganov’s agent Dan Milstein had recently said that no decision has been made on where the defenseman will play next season, and now he’s clarified things even further. Darren Dreger of TSN passes along that it is either the Maple Leafs or KHL for Ozhiganov in 2018-19, with no other NHL teams being options for the 25-year old.

If Toronto does sign him, it may complicate things somewhat for their roster next season. Currently the team has only Zaitsev under contract as a right-handed defenseman, while Connor Carrick (RFA) and Roman Polak (UFA) head to free agency. Toronto used Ron Hainsey almost exclusively on the right side this season, but need to upgrade the position if they’re to take another step forward next year. While it’s hard to imagine Ozhiganov being given the same opportunity that Zaitsev was when he first came to Toronto, it seems unlikely that he’d be leaving Russia to play in the AHL. That means he’d have to take up the third spot on the right side, which is a risky proposition for a team looking to contend for the Stanley Cup.

Still, there is a long way to go before the ice is set for the 2018-19 season, and getting Ozhiganov under contract gives you another talented defenseman to work with. Whether through trade, free agency or something else, the Maple Leafs need to strengthen their defense corps and solidify their biggest weakness.

One has to wonder if part of the hold up for Ozhiganov is the potential departure of Lamoriello, who was moved out of the GM spot recently and has rumors circling around him. If Lamoriello was who sold the Maple Leafs organization to Ozhiganov in the first place, perhaps his absence would push the young defenseman back to the KHL.

Latest On Lou Lamoriello & The New York Islanders

May 7, 2018 at 11:28 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

At the end of April, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brendan Shanahan in particular, announced that they would not be changing the plan to have Lou Lamoriello step aside as General Manager and move into a senior advisory role. Though they didn’t immediately name a successor to Lamoriello, many believe it will either be Kyle Dubas or Mark Hunter, both of whom are already with the organization. But for the outgoing executive, speculation immediately began over whether he would be satisfied with the reduced role.

When Lamoriello was pushed out in a similar way with the New Jersey Devils, it didn’t take him long to find another GM opening in Toronto. He left the franchise that he’d been with for decades for the new opportunity with the Maple Leafs, thanks in large part to the extremely close relationship he and Shanahan have maintained for quite some time. Now, as he steps aside and allows one of the younger, less experienced executives to take over in Toronto, he could repeat his steps and move on to another organization once again.

Last night, Bob McKenzie of TSN tweeted out that there is “a decided uptick” in speculation regarding Lamoriello and the New York Islanders, something that Darren Dreger repeated on TSN radio this morning. Neither of the two insiders could provide any real knowledge of an imminent move, but many others have pondered the same move since Lamoriello’s son Chris is already with the organization and there is talk of current GM Garth Snow moving into a more senior role. Interestingly, Dreger notes that there could be a scenario where Lamoriello moves into a role with the Islanders that is not that of GM, though his influence would certainly still be felt in that front office.

The legendary executive has helped rebuild the Maple Leafs after more than a decade of disappointment, though the team has yet to take the leap and win a playoff series under his leadership. With Toronto still a young team with several developing stars, there are some key decisions to be made by the front office in the coming months and years. Even with Dubas or Hunter at the helm, having Lamoriello there for assistance and guidance wouldn’t be a bad thing.

In New York though they might be even more in need. The Islanders are heading into a crucial few months for the franchise, with John Tavares defining his career with his next decision. The pending unrestricted free agent could likely play his entire career with one organization if he signs long-term in New York, or could chase the money and a Stanley Cup somewhere else. He’ll have plenty of suitors, and an experienced negotiator like Lamoriello could be of use to the team as they try to lock down the face of the franchise.

As they head into the next chapter in their history, with a new arena being built and set to open in a few years, the Islanders need to solve the problems that have limited them to barely any playoff success in recent times. If Tavares returns, the team has to find a way to solve their defense and goaltending issues and allow their talented offensive unit to take them on a deep playoff run. If Snow is moving into a different position, perhaps Lamoriello is the person to take them there.

Mark Hunter Making GM Choice Difficult For Maple Leafs

May 6, 2018 at 9:59 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

With most people under the belief that with former Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello out of the picture now, the Maple Leafs are likely to go with their long-time plan of naming GM-in-waiting Kyle Dubas as their next general manager.

However, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet suggests that may not be the case. During a segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Kypreos says that many executives around the league believe that assistant general manager Mark Hunter may be the better choice. Elliotte Friedman reported on the same broadcast that team president Brendan Shanahan and Hunter met Friday to discuss the opening.

“A lot of executives I’ve spoken with believe that when it comes to the next general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, it goes in the favour of Mark Hunter, for no other reason than his resume,” said Kypreos.

The 55-year-old Hunter has quite a different resume than the 32-year-old prodigy Dubas. The 12-year NHL veteran has been a successful coach, owned, and ran the OHL’s London Knights and has been an executive with the Maple Leafs since 2014. Dubas, who also joined the organization in 2014, was the general manager of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

“A lot of executives still believe that Kyle Dubas pales in comparison to the years of experience and multiple Memorial Cups [of Hunter],” Kyreos said. “The issue for Brendan Shanahan going forward is that if he decides to go with Kyle Dubas, he runs the risk of losing Mark Hunter, who would have a tough time answering to Dubas.”

With two solid candidates for the highly-coveted position, however, it’s likely the team will lose one executive at some point if they don’t get the position.

Lou Lamoriello Will Not Return As GM Of Toronto Maple Leafs

April 30, 2018 at 10:57 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs today announced that legendary executive Lou Lamoriello will not return as General Manager next season. President Brendan Shanahan released a statement explaining the decision:

Three years ago, Lou and I agreed on a contract that would see him serve as General Manager of the Maple Leafs for three years and then transition to Senior Advisor for the following four years. This morning I informed Lou that I was not going to deviate from that course of action. I will now focus all of my attention towards making a decision regarding our next GM.

Lamoriello oversaw a tear down and rebuild of the Maple Leafs that has resulted in two straight playoff appearances and a young core that can rival anyone in the league. With both Kyle Dubas and Mark Hunter waiting in the wings though as potential GM candidates, the original succession plan can still be put into place. It’s not clear which one—or who from outside the organization—will be given the title, but the Maple Leafs shouldn’t be leaderless for very long.

Dubas, the whiz kid GM from the OHL who has ascended the front office ranks incredibly quickly, was targeted by the Colorado Avalanche last summer as a potential replacement to Joe Sakic. The Maple Leafs didn’t allow Dubas to interview for the job, which was considered by many as a sign that he would eventually be promoted within the Toronto organization. He serves as GM of the Toronto Marlies, who are a powerhouse in the AHL and are on to the second round of the playoffs currently. His unique approach to player development and analytic implementation is a perfect example of how front offices are leaning in various cities around the league.

Hunter on the other hand is more of an old school hockey mind, who has been the backbone of the Maple Leafs’ scouting department for several years. The former NHL player and London Knights GM, Hunter is an outstanding judge of talent among young players and has unearthed several mid and late round picks for the Maple Leafs.

There is always potential for someone else to come in and fill the role for Shanahan and the Maple Leafs, and Lamoriello’s move to advisor may come with some skepticism from those who cover him regularly. Many believe he’s not ready to give up being a GM in the NHL, and as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet noted in his recent 31 Thoughts column, he has ties to the New York Islanders organization. Should Garth Snow move up to a higher role in the organization, Lamoriello could be a potential replacement as GM at least in the short-term.

For the Maple Leafs, this isn’t exactly a firing after a disappointing first-round exit. Instead, Shanahan has maintained a plan from day one and is continuing to move the team further down the line towards perennial Stanley Cup contention. Though Lamoriello is one of the league’s most well-known front office executives, there was a split coming eventually given that he is 75 years old and closing in on retirement.

Tyler Bozak Hopes To Stay In Toronto

April 27, 2018 at 3:32 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 9 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs held their season-ending locker clean out and media availability today, with players, coaches and front office executives addressing everything from their third period collapse to free agent statuses. Though head coach Mike Babcock and GM Lou Lamoriello wouldn’t comment on whether any of the Maple Leafs big three unrestricted free agent forwards—James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov—would be back, one of them made it clear that he’d like to be. Bozak, speaking to media including Kristen Shilton of TSN didn’t hide his love for the team:

It would be my top priority to stay here. My family loves it here, my kid loves it here, he thinks he owns the place. It’ll be tough on him if I’m not back.

Bozak has been with the Maple Leafs since signing out of the University of Denver in 2009, and has actually put together quite a career. Undrafted despite 128 points in his final year for the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL, Bozak debuted for the Maple Leafs in the 2009-10 season and barely looked back. In 594 games for the club, he’s recorded 365 points and been one of the league’s best face-off men. Sometimes played above his head on the Maple Leafs’ top line, he nevertheless kept producing including a 43-point season this year.

Now 32, Bozak is set to hit unrestricted free agency but knows nothing but life as a Toronto Maple Leafs player. His son Kanon has become something of a viral hit over the last few years, and it’s clear that he is well-liked in the Toronto dressing room. Still, with the Maple Leafs heading into uncharted territory with contract extensions due for Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander, there may not be enough room to keep the veteran center around.

The Maple Leafs will be one of the more interesting teams to watch this summer, as they deal with the disappointment of another loss at the hands of the Boston Bruins. With obvious deficiencies in their defense corps, and a young forward group that is set to lose many of their veteran pieces to free agency—Tomas Plekanec and Dominic Moore are also pending UFAs—there is a lot of work to be done before the 2018-19 season if they want to be legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

Snapshots: General Manager Hot Seat, Cholowski, Cullen

March 11, 2018 at 3:55 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

With many teams starting to see the writing on the wall that their season is coming to a close sooner than they had intended, the next question that comes about is whether the team has any intentions of making changes to their staff. After a look at possible changes to the coaching ranks, the next question would likely turn to which general managers are on the hot seat. The Athletic’s James Mirtle (subscription required) takes a look at 10 candidates who could find themselves without a job this offseason.

Mirtle quickly addresses the obvious ones, including Detroit’s Ken Holland and Toronto’s Lou Lamoriello, both who have been rumored to either be on their way out or moved to a different role within the organization. However, Mirtle also admits that both could easily stay in their present roles too.

The next stage of general managers that are most likely on the hot seat include Peter Chiarelli of Edmonton, the New York Islanders Garth Snow and Montreal’s Marc Bergevin, while other general managers might be given more time to prove to the organization that their plan works. Colorado’s Joe Sakic, Arizona’s John Chayka, Minnesota’s Chuck Fletcher and Columbus’ Jarmo Kekalainen are all likely to be on short leashes due to their inability of taking their teams to a new level.

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press writes that while 2017 first-round pick Michael Rasmussen might make the Detroit Red Wings team next season, the real prospect to keep an eye on will be 2016 first-round pick Dennis Cholowski, whose having a stellar year with both the Prince George Cougars and the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. The 20-year-old blueliner is in his final year of junior and has 14 goals and 50 assists this year. St. James writes that while Rasmussen must make the Red Wings roster out of training camp to stick, Cholowski could play with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL and get a midseason callup if he can’t break into the Red Wings lineup.
  • StarTribune’s Sarah McLellan writes that the NHL Players Association released a players poll this week and for the question of which player would make great coach after they retire. Minnesota’s Matt Cullen won the poll. He received 4.5 percent of the votes, yet Cullen hasn’t decided if that’s the avenue he plans to go down. “I’ve never really put a lot of thought into it, to be honest,” Cullen said. “I guess I’ve had a lot of experience, and I’ve been through a lot through a long career, I guess. Truthfully, I’ve never thought a lot about it. I don’t know. I’m not sure what I’ll do when I’m done playing.”

Snapshots: Hajek, Larkin, Colorado Injuries, Lamoriello

March 4, 2018 at 6:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

The key to the Ryan McDonagh to Tampa Bay trade was the inclusion of prospect defenseman Libor Hajek and had he not been involved, McDonagh would still be with the Rangers, reports Larry Brooks of the New York Post.  The 2016 second-round pick is having a strong season at the WHL level and put forth a very strong showing back at the World Juniors and figures to be an important piece of their retooling on the back end.  Brooks adds that Pittsburgh, Washington, and Florida made runs at McDonagh before the trade deadline while noting that the Capitals would have needed to get a third team involved to get a deal done.

More from around the league:

  • The Oilers are expected to sign UMass-Boston forward Colin Larkin to an NHL entry-level deal, reports Mark Divver of the Providence Journal (Twitter links). The 24-year-old has had a strong season at the NCAA Division III level, posting 24 goals and 22 assists in just 27 games and averaged a point per game or better in each of his four collegiate seasons.  He is also the brother of Red Wings center Dylan Larkin.
  • The Avalanche should have goaltender Jonathan Bernier available for their upcoming road trip, reports Mike Chambers of the Denver Post. He has missed the last eight games due to a concussion.  Meanwhile, winger Sven Andrighetto, who has been out since December 31st due to a leg injury, is also nearing a return.  The news isn’t as promising for a pair of defenders as Erik Johnson (shoulder) and Mark Barberio (concussion) are not close to returning to Colorado’s lineup.
  • The contract extension for Washington GM Brian MacLellan leaves two general managers in limbo. One of those is Lou Lamoriello of the Maple Leafs whose initial three-year contract is set to expire at the end of the season.  While there has been speculation that he could cede his spot to Kyle Dubas, the 75-year-old told reporters, including Postmedia’s Terry Koshan, that he isn’t concerned about his role with the team next year at all, calling it a “non-issue”.  Even if Lamoriello is out of the GM chair next season, he’s likely to stick around in an advisory role at the very least.

Snapshots: Leivo, Danault, Smith

February 12, 2018 at 12:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

Not so long ago it was reported that Josh Leivo had requested a trade away from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 24-year old forward has barely played over the last few seasons, spending more time in the press box than the bench. It was natural for him to want a fresh start somewhere, and a chance to prove he is a full-time NHL player.

This morning, speaking with reporters including Jonas Siegal of The Athletic, Maple Leafs’ GM Lou Lamoriello expressed that he never did receive a trade request from Leivo despite the widespread reports. When asked about the trade request earlier this month, Leivo’s agent wouldn’t confirm it but did say that the forward “simply needs to play regularly.”

  • Phillip Danault is back travelling with the Montreal Canadiens, and says the only symptom he suffered after taking a Zdeno Chara shot to the head was vertigo. Danault hasn’t played in nearly a month, but was actually having a nice season for the Canadiens with 23 points in 43 games. He could rejoin the lineup on Wednesday evening.
  • Eric Francis of Sportsnet reports that Calgary Flames goaltender Mike Smith’s injury may not be as bad as it looked, though no clarification past that is given. Smith had to be helped off the ice by the training staff and two teammates, just at the end of their game against the New York Islanders. Smith has been a huge part of the Flames season so far, and a long-term injury could be devastating to their playoff hopes.

Snapshots: Rangers, Dahlin, Johnson

January 26, 2018 at 3:08 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 9 Comments

The New York Rangers are currently just a single point out of a playoff spot, and two points out of second place in the Metropolitan Division, but according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post that won’t make them buyers at the deadline. In fact, Brooks writes that the Rangers are preparing to “blow it up” and are willing to deal Ryan McDonagh and Mats Zuccarello along with their rental options.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard McDonagh’s name mentioned, as he currently sits tenth on the TSN Trade Bait board, but is still might come as a surprise. The Rangers captain has logged 24 minutes a night again this season, and currently has 24 points through 45 games. While he may not match his career-high of 14 goals, he’s certainly a bargain at his $4.7MM cap hit this year and next.

  • Welcome to “the Rasmus Dahlin draft” writes TSN insider Bob McKenzie, who released his early rankings for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft today. Dahlin tops the board like everywhere else, but McKenzie’s rankings do differ from some of the other leading sources. Perhaps most notably is Ryan Merkley at #11, as the dynamic Guelph defenseman has slipped to the back half of the first round in most other rankings. McKenzie explains why, noting Merkley’s perceived attitude problem and temperament as potential reasons for his fall.
  • Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050 radio today, and said that he’d be “shocked” if the Toronto Maple Leafs’ GM Lou Lamoriello hadn’t called on Jack Johnson from the Columbus Blue Jackets. As noted in our most recent live chat, Johnson does seem like a pretty good fit for the Maple Leafs down the stretch as he tries to secure a long-term contract this summer. Johnson is looking for an opportunity to play a big role somewhere, and the Maple Leafs have had a revolving door in the back half of their defense corps. Still, with Morgan Rielly and Nikita Zaitsev returning from injury soon and Travis Dermott showing he’s ready for the NHL, the Maple Leafs aren’t guaranteed to be on the market any longer.
