COVID Protocol Related Absences: 01/21/21

January 21, 2021 at 4:58 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 protocol. Some teams playing games later this evening are still listed as TBA, but most of the list is in:

Carolina – Warren Foegele, Jordan Martinook, Jaccob Slavin, Jordan Staal, Teuvo Teravainen
Columbus – Mikko Koivu
Detroit – Adam Erne, Robby Fabbri, Sam Gagner*, Jon Merrill*
Florida – Juho Lammikko
Minnesota Wild – Alex Stalock
New Jersey – Jesper Bratt, Mackenzie Blackwood*
Tampa Bay –  Curtis McElhinney
Washington Capitals – Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Samsonov
Winnipeg – Anton Forsberg, Tucker Poolman

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: Mikael Granlund, Nashville Predators; Josh Bailey, New York Islanders; Shayne Gostisbehere, Philadelphia Flyers

The big news is still the four Washington Capitals players, who will be out for at least four games as they quarantine after a positive test for Samsonov. That said, Blackwood’s appearance on the list is also very concerning, given how important he is to the New Jersey Devils. Following Corey Crawford’s sudden retirement, Blackwood was forced to take the entire weight of the Devils’ net while they scrambled to grab goaltenders off waivers. His absence could be crushing to their early-season hopes.

As has been the case so far this season, the league declined to identify anyone from Dallas and will hold off on doing so until they are able to play in their first game, scheduled for tomorrow. They had a significant outbreak early in camp as 17 of the 27 players that tested positive in training camp were from the Stars.

Josh Manson Out With Oblique Injury

January 21, 2021 at 2:35 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Anaheim Ducks will be without one of their top defensemen for the next six weeks. Josh Manson has been ruled out with an oblique muscle injury suffered on Monday against the Minnesota Wild and has been placed on injured reserve.

Manson, 29, was forced from the game on Monday after just six minutes of ice time but has long been one of the most important players on the ice for Anaheim. Combined with Cam Fowler, Hampus Lindholm, and Kevin Shattenkirk, he formed an exceptional top-four that was expected to carry most of the defensive responsibility. In his absence, Jani Hakanpaa has been pushed up the depth chart, logging 19 minutes in each of the last two games. Though Hakanpaa has certainly held his own so far, the 28-year-old has just nine games under his belt at the NHL level, a lack of experience that will certainly be tested over the next six weeks.

Anaheim is already without Brendan Guhle, who was given his own six-week recovery timeline in early January after spraining his MCL. Suddenly, the Ducks defensive depth is quickly disappearing with only seven names between the NHL roster and taxi squad. For a team that was already in tough against a West Division that includes several top teams, losing part of the team’s biggest strength will be a challenge.

Snapshots: Ullmark, Tryamkin, Thornton

January 21, 2021 at 2:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have been taking the ice without Linus Ullmark for the last two games and this morning the goaltender explained why. After Monday’s morning skate, Ullmark received news that his father had passed away in Sweden. Carter Hutton took the net that evening, but captain Jack Eichel awarded Ullmark with the game puck after a 6-1 victory. He expressed his gratitude towards the whole organization for how they’ve come to his support in the days since.

Ullmark plans on traveling with the team to Washington and could be available for Friday’s game against the Capitals. Hutton meanwhile will not be on the trip as he deals with an injury and is listed as day-to-day.

  • The Vancouver Canucks have a very interesting relationship with Russian defenseman Nikita Tryamkin, who is still playing in the KHL despite a long negotiation last year. The 26-year-old defender is still technically a restricted free agent and can only sign with the Canucks if he chooses to return to the NHL. Now, Rick Dhaliwal of TSN gives an update on the situation and spoke with Yekaterinburg executive Maxim Ryabkov, who expressed how much Tryamkin has improved in the last year, even calling him “one of the best defensemen in the KHL.” The 6’7″ behemoth pairs incredible size with excellent skating ability to shut down rushes and move the puck quickly. If he is not signed this offseason, Tryamkin can actually become an unrestricted free agent after the 2021-22 season.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs had the blender out at practice today following a loss to the Edmonton Oilers that included Joe Thornton’s early exit with an injury. Thornton will undergo further testing to determine the extent of the injury but is expected to miss some time. Interestingly, Auston Matthews also left practice just before it began, though all head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters including Kristen Shilton of TSN that the star center “wasn’t feeling great.” Adam Brooks, Pierre Engvall, and Alexander Barabanov were all skating with the main group as the Maple Leafs try to figure out their lines moving forward.

Nick Robertson To Miss Four Weeks

January 21, 2021 at 2:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Jan 21: The Maple Leafs have now moved Robertson to long-term injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least ten games and 24 days.

Jan 18: Though Toronto Maple Leafs head coach classified it as good news, Nick Roberston still won’t be making his return to the lineup for the next while. The rookie forward is expected to be out four weeks with a knee injury he sustained on Saturday night, Sheldon Keefe told reporters including Kristen Shilton of TSN today.

Robertson, 19, was making his regular season (but not NHL) debut but managed just over two minutes of ice time before colliding with Drake Batherson and injuring his knee. The second-round pick is arguably Toronto’s top prospect and had worked his way onto the squad while the OHL stays in limbo. Undersized but insatiable, Robertson scored 55 goals in just 46 games for the Peterborough Petes last season and made his Maple Leafs debut in the postseason bubble.

In his place, it appears as though the Maple Leafs will be going with seven defensemen tonight, allowing Mikko Lehtonen to make his NHL debut. The former KHL Defenseman of the Year has plenty of offensive upside but is still getting used to playing on the smaller rink. The Maple Leafs take on the Winnipeg Jets this evening.

Several Capitals Players Expected To Miss Four Games

January 21, 2021 at 1:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

1:40pm: Samantha Pell of the Washington Post reports that Samsonov tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday night. It triggered a contact tracing probe, which confirmed that the four Russian players spent time together in a Pittsburgh hotel room where they “watched sports and played video games.” According to Pell, the NHL is not expected to postpone Friday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.

12:25pm: The four Washington Capitals players that were placed on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list yesterday, Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Samsonov, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Dmitry Orlov, are now in quarantine. All four are expected to miss at least the next four games, according to head coach Peter Laviolette, who spoke with reporters including Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press. Laviolette also explained that there was a positive virus case among the Capitals players, which led to contact tracing. The team was also fined $100,000 for the protocol breach yesterday.

Though there will be plenty of debate over how the players were punished for gathering in a hotel room, the fact is the Capitals will now have to navigate the next part of the schedule without several key players. The team is set to welcome in the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders for two games each over the next week, all matches expected to take place without the foursome. That certainly puts a lot of pressure on someone like Vitek Vanecek, the team’s backup goaltender, who has just two NHL appearances under his belt. Craig Anderson has been recalled from the taxi squad to join him in net for the time being.

Yesterday, Ovechkin released an apology that read:

I regret my choice to spend time together with my teammates in our hotel room and away from the locker room areas. I will learn from this experience.

To be clear, it has not been revealed who (if any) on the team tested positive. The four players were added to the CPRA list and will be unable to practice with the team until they are cleared by the league’s protocols.

Pittsburgh Penguins Announce Multiple Injuries

January 21, 2021 at 12:31 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The East Division is not having a good day. The Washington Capitals will be without four key players for at least the next week, the Philadelphia Flyers announced several injuries this morning and now the Pittsburgh Penguins want to get in on the fun. Both Marcus Pettersson and Juuso Riikola were absent from today’s practice and Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters including Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the former would be out week-to-week and the latter is out “longer term.” Chad Ruhwedel, who was also absent, was excused because of the birth of his child and should be available to the team tomorrow.

These two injuries on defense come after Mike Matheson was already ruled out, meaning the team will likely be forced to insert prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph. The 21-year-old was acquired in the Phil Kessel trade of 2019 and recorded 17 points in 52 games last season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Joseph practiced on the third pairing next to Kevin Czuczman, who was recalled to the taxi squad just a few days ago.

This kind of depth test may be common this season as teams try to navigate a condensed schedule with the threat of COVID-19 also looming in the background. At any point, a whole swath of players could be removed from the roster by injury or illness, leaving options thin and playing time abundant. For Pittsburgh specifically, the team is already stuck in the middle of the East Division table at 2-2 and have struggled to keep the puck out of their net. These defensive injuries won’t help that as they continue to play important matches every other day.

Julius Honka Clears Waivers

January 21, 2021 at 11:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 12 Comments

Jan 21: Honka has cleared waivers according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Sometimes, in cases like this, clearing actually increases the trade value of an asset since it can now be assigned directly to the minor leagues. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with Honka.

Jan 20: The Dallas Stars have placed Julius Honka on waivers today, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. The move comes just as the Stars prepare for their first game of the season later this week and after the team started making their final cuts. The Stars have also sent Joseph Cecconi, Riley Damiani, Tye Felhaber, Ben Gleason, Adam Mascherin, Jerad Rosburg, Ryan Shea and Riley Tufte to the minor leagues.

The focus here will be placed on Honka though, given his status as a first-round pick that never panned out. The 25-year-old defenseman spent last season overseas playing in Finland but agreed to return to the Stars organization and signed a one-year, two-way deal in October. Selected 14th overall in 2014, he has played just 87 games in the NHL and none since January of 2019.

What likely frustrated Honka and led to his previous trade requests and departure to Finland, was that he hasn’t received much minor league play either. Instead, the young defenseman found himself in the press box on most nights, scratched for months at a time. His development has stagnated, though there still may be some upside left in the former Swift Current Broncos star.

For Honka, a claim would likely be the best thing for his career, given that even after this season ends he still won’t be an unrestricted free agent unless the Stars let him go. Getting out of Dallas may be the only chance he has to really play at the NHL level; if he clears tomorrow, he’ll likely head to the taxi squad or the AHL.

Colorado Avalanche Sign Peyton Jones

January 21, 2021 at 10:59 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Colorado Avalanche have added some more goaltending depth, signing Peyton Jones to a one-year contract for the 2020-21 season. Jones will be immediately assigned to the Colorado Eagles of the AHL.

Jones, 24, is coming off a strong four-year run with Penn State including a Hobey Baker nomination in 2020. The 6’3″ goaltender has suited up for eight games with the Utah Grizzlies this season after signing a two-year AHL contract last spring, but will get an unexpected opportunity to sign his first NHL deal in this unique season.

Though he isn’t expected to challenge for the starting role with the Avalanche, he could potentially serve as a taxi squad goaltender for the team as they deal with injuries. The club currently has Hunter Miska on the active roster and Adam Werner on the taxi squad, not leaving much for the Eagles to work with once their season begins. Jones could now potentially fill that taxi squad goaltender requirement at times, allowing the AHL netminders to get playing time in the minor leagues.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 01/21/21

January 21, 2021 at 10:03 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It appears as though there will be daily movement this season between the active roster and taxi squad. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of shuffle news each day.

  • The Washington Capitals have recalled Craig Anderson from the taxi squad while replacing him with Connor McMichael. The team of course is dealing with a breach of COVID protocol by several top players, including goaltender Ilya Samsonov who will now be unable to practice or play for a certain amount of time. With Samsonov sidelined, Anderson will join Vitek Vanecek in the crease.
  • The Nashville Predators have recalled Michael McCarron, Philip Tomasino, and Ben Harpur from the AHL to the taxi squad, while sending Cole Smith from the taxi squad to the AHL. The 19-year-old Tomasino will be the most interesting name of the bunch after his excellent World Junior performance a few weeks ago. Selected in the first round, Tomasino is one of the top prospects waiting for the OHL to return and is currently eligible to play in the AHL.
  • Morgan Barron and Matthew Robertson have both been assigned to the AHL from the New York Rangers taxi squad, giving them a chance to take part in minor league training camp. The pair of prospects are just starting their professional careers (with Robertson even eligible to return to the WHL) and need any development time available to them.
  • Spencer Martin has been recalled to the Tampa Bay Lightning taxi squad, giving them an extra goaltender as Curtis McElhinney remains on the CPRA list. Martin, 25, has played just three games at the NHL level and none since the 2016-17 season.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled MacKenzie Entwistle and Reese Johnson from the AHL to the taxi squad. Johnson, 22, has yet to see an NHL game and had just eight points in 52 AHL games last season for the Rockford IceHogs. Entwistle meanwhile had a much better start to his pro career, scoring 26 points in 56 games last season for Rockford.
  • In the wake of their injuries, the Philadelphia Flyers have recalled Samuel Morin from the taxi squad. Morin has experience at defense but has been training for a transition to wing to continue his career. He said during training camp that he had been watching Matt Martin and hoped to imitate that kind of impact.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have added Taro Hirose to their taxi squad, recalling him from the AHL.  The winger played in 26 games with Detroit last season, picking up two goals and five assists while adding 27 points (5-22-27) in 35 games with Grand Rapids.  The spot on the taxi squad was opened up Wednesday when Kevin Boyle was sent to the Griffins.

Philadelphia Flyers Announce Multiple Injuries

January 21, 2021 at 9:26 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

Morgan Frost of the Philadelphia Flyers has suffered a dislocated left shoulder and is out indefinitely. The young forward has been placed on injured reserve. Philippe Myers, who was also forced from action recently, has suffered a fractured rib and is considered week-to-week. One of the only reasons Frost had even been playing was because of an injury to Sean Couturier, who hasn’t played since last Friday.

It’s important to remember that missing even a few weeks can mean up to a quarter of the season in this condensed schedule. Should Couturier be able to return soon, the absence of Frost may not be that noticeable, but Myers was and will continue to be a huge loss. Even with very little NHL experience, the 23-year-old defenseman was given a three-year, $7.65MM contract this winter and was expected to be a key part of the Flyers back end.

Frost meanwhile is just trying to get his foot in the door, after spending most of last season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The 21-year-old forward was a first-round pick in 2017 and has just 22 NHL games to his name so far. His best opportunity to prove his value may have been while Couturier was out, but now he’ll miss a huge chunk of the season himself.

The Flyers are back in action this evening against the Boston Bruins as they look to maintain their lead in the East Division.
