Morning Notes: Chayka, Coaches Poll, SKA

July 29, 2020 at 11:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The wild John Chayka situation in Arizona continues, with more details emerging daily. This time it’s from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, who confirms the previous speculation that it was the New Jersey Devils ownership group that offered Chayka a position. Josh Harris and David Blitzer also own the Philadelphia 76ers, Crystal Palace FC, and are potential contenders to purchase the New York Mets.

As Wyshynski and other reporters have explained, the situation is expected to be dealt with by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman at some point before Chayka takes a new position.

  • Craig Custance and Michael Russo of The Athletic published their coaches poll today, with some interesting results. The NHL coaches that were asked feel as though the Pittsburgh Penguins are the team that most benefited from the break, while others pointed out Nathan MacKinnon’s ability to carry his team to the Stanley Cup. The entire poll provides good insight into how those intimately involved feel about the return to play tournament.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have their sights set on the ultimate prize this summer, but their prospect pipeline continues to be an interesting subject of conversation. Vasily Podkolzin, selected tenth overall last year, isn’t even signed by the team yet but could be a difference-maker in the future. Unfortunately, Rick Dhaliwal of TSN reports that Podkolzin’s team, SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, has temporarily shut down training camp due to COVID-19 concerns. Podkolzin has not tested positive.

Toronto’s Egor Korshkov To Be Loaned To KHL

July 28, 2020 at 9:00 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Egor Korshkov may be on the team’s postseason roster, but he is unlikely to see much action. The young forward is under contract for 2020-21 as well, but the same goes for his likelihood of suiting up for the Leafs. As a result, Korshkov may be in need of an early start to his season and possibly a prolonged place to play at a high level. According to multiple sources, that is expected to be the KHL.

Russian news source Sport24 first reported that Korshkov was planning to sign a contract with HC Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, the same organization that he played for during the seven years prior to his jump to the NHL. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman corrects this report, noting that Korshkov will be loaned rather than having his contract terminated in favor of a KHL deal. This will leave open the option for Korshkov to play for Toronto at some point next season.

Korshkov, 24, played in just one game with the Maple Leafs this year and saw only about ten minutes of ice time. However, he made the most of this debut by recording a goal. The big right wing is a natural scorer who excels around the net. He recorded 16 goals and 25 points in 44 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this season and very well might have seen more NHL action if not for the league’s pause. There is upside to Korshkov’s game and this loan does not imply that he does not have a future in Toronto. However, with the Maple Leafs deep up front and the questions surrounding the 2020-21 AHL season, a return to the KHL could be the best bet for Korshkov.

Anaheim Ducks Re-Sign Sonny Milano

July 28, 2020 at 8:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

8:00pm: The Ducks have officially confirmed the new deal. Milano is set to make $1.6MM next season and $1.8MM in 2021-22.

4:30pm: The Anaheim Ducks will be handing out an extension to one of their young trade deadline acquisitions according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The insider reports that Sonny Milano will be signing a two-year extension that will carry an average annual value of $1.7MM. Milano was scheduled to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The 24-year old forward has quite honestly been a disappointment to this point in his NHL career, after going 16th overall in 2014. When the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him Milano had just dominated at the USNTDP and would continue that offensive performance in his one year of CHL hockey. Oozing with skill, the winger took immediately to the professional ranks when transitioning to the AHL and even recorded five points in ten games as a teenager in 2015.

The biggest question with Milano was always his consistency and whether he could round out a defensive game to go along with his offensive skill. It was tough for him to crack John Tortorella’s lineup, and when he did there were long stretches where he would seem to disappear. In 120 games for the Blue Jackets, he recorded just 42 points and averaged fewer than 12 minutes of ice time.

Then came the trade deadline, when it was obvious he needed a fresh start and his contract was coming to an end. The Blue Jackets shipped him to Anaheim in a one-for-one trade that saw Devin Shore go the other way, giving him a chance to play every day in the top-six of a rebuilding club. Milano got into nine games with the Ducks before the season ended, and recorded five points while averaging 15:30 of ice time.

Now, with the Ducks looking to continue their youth movement, Milano will get a chance to prove he belongs there as a core piece. A $1.7MM cap hit is a relatively big commitment for a player who has just 47 career points in 125 regular season games, but the Ducks obviously liked what they saw.

For Milano, this is basically a perfect outcome. He’ll still be a restricted free agent at the end of the deal but he gets some financial security for the next two years, a likely chance to play power play minutes beside talented teammates, and will be arbitration-eligible and able to force his way to UFA status in 2022 if he chooses. Now he just needs to find that consistency which has always eluded him.

Minor Transactions: 07/28/20

July 28, 2020 at 2:48 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The NHL is back, kicking things off with some exhibition action between rivals. As the hockey world focuses on Pittsburgh-Philadelphia, minor league and European teams continue to build their depth for an upcoming season. As minor signings roll in, we’ll keep track of them right here.

  • Swiss journalist Gregory Beaud tweets that Lausanne HC of the NLA will announce two more foreign signings once the NHL season is complete, following their deals with Cory Conacher and Brian Gibbons today. While not confirmed yet, he believes that Mark Barberio of the Colorado Avalanche will be one of those to head to Switzerland next season.
  • NHL draft pick Martins Dzierkals will be returning to Dinamo Riga next season, signing a deal with the KHL team after spending last season in Finland. Dzierkals, 23, was picked 68th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2015 but never signed and subsequently saw his draft rights traded to the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this year.
  • The Manitoba Moose have signed Nathan Todd to a one-year AHL contract, bringing back a player who spent 16 games in their uniform this season. Todd is an elite offensive presence at the ECHL level, but has just one point in 27 career AHL games.

Poll: Who Should Win The 2020 Norris Trophy?

July 28, 2020 at 1:47 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

The finalists have been announced for all the major awards, but like every year there is much debate over who should take home each piece of hardware. In fact, with a shortened season and unorthodox playoff scenario, the views and reasoning behind each vote will perhaps vary even more wildly.

So as we get closer to the return of NHL hockey in Edmonton and Toronto, where 24 teams will try to chase the Stanley Cup, we’re going to ask you, the PHR faithful, to explain who you would vote for if given the chance.

After looking at the Calder Trophy finalists and Jack Adams nominees let’s shift our focus to the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to “the defenseman who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability at the position.”  Almost exclusively, the Norris is given to one of the top-scoring defensemen in the league, though winning that race doesn’t necessarily guarantee you the award.

This year’s finalists are the top three in points from defensemen and include John Carlson of the Washington Capitals, Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators, and Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Carlson, who tallied 75 points to lead all defenders, finished fifth in Norris voting for 2018 and fourth in 2019. He’ll finish at least a little higher than that because of his outstanding season, in which he became just the third defenseman in the last decade to score at a better than point-per-game pace for a full season. In fact, his 1.09 points-per-game put him at the top of that list, ahead of Brent Burns (1.01 in 2018-19) and Erik Karlsson (1.00 in 2015-16).

Interestingly, both Burns and Karlsson finished second in the Norris race when they put up those numbers and Carlson certainly could follow their footsteps here. That’s because of the presence of his other finalists, especially Josi who appears to be the favorite by many accounts.

The Predators captain but up his own outstanding season, tying for second among defensemen in goals with 16 and setting a new career-high in points with 65. Routinely when the Nashville offense was sputtering they would turn to Josi to show them the way, while he also carried a huge weight defensively as one of the most-used players in the league. The 30-year old averaged close to 26 minutes a night for the team, including two short-handed, significantly more than what Carlson did for Washington.

When you’re talking about team back-bones though, it’s hard to overlook Hedman who has been one of the best in the business for a decade now in Tampa Bay. The 6’6″ Swede has been a Norris finalist in each of the previous three seasons, winning the award in 2018 after recording 63 points in 77 games. Hedman actually eclipsed that offensive pace this season by recording 55 in 66. A true do-it-all defender, Hedman is equally effective at either end of the rink and gives his team a chance to win every night.

Even beyond the three finalists, there were some very deserving candidates this season, including a pair of rookies who will have to settle for a Calder Trophy battle. Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar may not be quite at this level yet, but after coming fourth and seventh among defensemen in scoring you can bet the two first-year talents will be battling for a Norris down the line.

There’s also Alex Pietrangelo, the steady St. Louis Blues captain who has quietly been one of the most effective and consistent players in the league for the last ten years. Pietrangelo has never been a finalist, despite recording double-digit goal totals in six different years and posting at least 40 points in eight of his ten full seasons.

There may be others too who deserve your vote, so feel free to make a case for them in the comments! Cast your vote below.

Nashville Predators Sign Anthony Richard

July 28, 2020 at 10:32 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Nashville Predators have handed out another 2020-21 contract, signing Anthony Richard to a one-year, two-way deal. Richard was scheduled to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season when his entry-level contract expired. The new contract will carry a salary of $735K at the NHL level and $65K at the AHL level.

Richard, 23, was a fourth-round pick of the Predators back in 2015 and has played two games for the NHL club. While he’s still looking for his first point at that level, he has been a regular contributor for the Milwaukee Admirals and represents solid depth for the organization. Versatile enough to play both center and wing, he’ll likely be heading back to the minors again next season, though, with a flat cap teams may be giving more opportunities to their young players.

Signing Richard leaves just three pending restricted free agents for the Predators: Rem Pitlick, Yakov Trenin and Michael McCarron. The much more important negotiations will be with some of their unrestricted free agents, which include key roster players like Mikael Granlund, Craig Smith and Dan Hamhuis.

Morning Notes: Kase, Gibbons, Crosby

July 28, 2020 at 10:26 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Boston Bruins still don’t have Ondrej Kase inside the bubble with them and even when he gets there he may find it difficult to get into the lineup. Speaking with reporters today including Joe Haggerty of NBC Sports, Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy explained that he may not necessarily insert Kase when he joins the team:

I don’t know the player right now. He’s only had a handful of games with us. Those are things we’ll decide down the road. Wouldn’t be automatic that I’d put Ondrej back in if one of the kids was playing well.

Kase of course arrived in Boston at the trade deadline, just a few days before the season was put on pause, but was expected to challenge for a role in the team’s top-six. In fact, it cost the Bruins their 2020 first-round pick to acquire him from the Anaheim Ducks—although one may argue that moving David Backes’ contract was the biggest part of that deal for the Bruins. Boston will have some time to figure out their lineup, as they play three round-robin games to determine playoff seeding.

  • Cory Conacher isn’t the only former NHL player headed to Switzerland, as Brian Gibbons has also signed with Lausanne HC for the 2020-21 season. Gibbons’ deal is only for one year, but means he won’t be returning to the Carolina Hurricanes organization where he played this season. Now 32, Gibbons played 15 games for the Hurricanes but failed to record a single point.
  • Sidney Crosby will be a game-time decision for the Pittsburgh Penguins when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers later today. Even if he doesn’t end up playing, that status should be encouraging for Penguins fans hoping to see their captain suit up in game one against the Montreal Canadiens. Crosby missed a chunk of training camp but returned to practice when the Penguins arrived at the Toronto bubble.

Cory Conacher Signs In NLA

July 28, 2020 at 9:18 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After failing to make the Tampa Bay Lightning playoff roster, Cory Conacher is taking his talents overseas. The pending unrestricted free agent has signed a three-year contract with Lausanne HC of the Swiss NLA. Conacher is still technically under contract with the Lightning, but won’t be playing with them again this summer.

In fact, he didn’t play much for them this entire season. The 30-year old forward spent almost the whole year in the minor leagues with the Syracuse Crunch, suiting up just four times for Tampa Bay. He did put up 38 points in 44 minor league appearances, using his speed and tenacity to continue to find success in the AHL.

Conacher actually played in the NLA previously, spending the 2015-16 season with SC Bern. He won the league championship that season and was a dominant offensive presence, recording 22 goals and 52 points in just 48 games to lead the team.

At his age, a three-year deal in Europe likely means the end of his NHL journey. In 193 regular season games, Conacher recorded 75 points.

Peter Chiarelli Linked To Arizona Coyotes

July 27, 2020 at 8:41 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 12 Comments

Though the Arizona Coyotes are still reeling from the sudden departure of GM John Chayka on the eve of the postseason, this hasn’t stopped the speculation of what could be next for the front office. Steve Sullivan has been named interim GM for the time being, but the team may look at other options as well. One such possibility that has been mentioned by two separate sources is former Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli.

Scott Burnside of The Athletic writes that he has heard from others that Chiarelli remains a trusted name in NHL circles and one that league officials would like to help find a new home. Arizona, perhaps the team that the league has assisted most through the years, would seemingly be a good pairing. Oilers beat writer Jim Matheson adds to the theory, stating that this is not the first he has heard Chiarelli linked to the Coyotes. Matheson applauds the promotion of Sullivan but does not rule out Chiarelli joining the front office in some capacity. While many consider Chiarelli’s tenure in Edmonton to be a disaster, he did create a Stanley Cup winner in Boston and still has plenty of supporters.

However, it’s unlikely that current Coyotes star Taylor Hall is among Chiarelli’s fans. The impending free agent was traded away from Edmonton, a city and team he enjoyed playing for, by Chiarelli. If Arizona thinks they have a chance to sign Hall this off-season, Chiarelli could be a problem. His hiring would likely indicate that Hall is not in the team’s future plans. Given the team’s tight salary cap space, this is a strong possibility anyhow. There’s also the chance that if consulted Chiarelli would opt against signing Hall long-term anyway. After all, the return that Chiarelli got for trading Hall from Edmonton to New Jersey would imply that he doesn’t highly value the player.
