Ryan Spooner Re-Signs In KHL

The first season overseas for Ryan Spooner was quite a productive one. The 28-year old forward recorded 37 points in 43 games for Dinamo Minsk of the KHL, leading the team in scoring despite playing far fewer games than many of his teammates. That led to some questioning whether the former NHL center would return to North America, even though he would have to wait until November for 2020-21 training camp. For now, it seems as though Spooner will be staying overseas.

HC Dinamo announced today that Spooner has signed a new one-year contract, meaning he’ll get another crack at leading them to the Gagarin Cup playoffs.

A veteran of more than 300 NHL games, Spooner was actually quite an effective player at one point for the Boston Bruins. The talented offensive forward recorded 49 points for the team in 2015-16, many coming on the powerplay as David Pastrnak was still just getting his feet wet in the NHL. While his tenure in Boston wasn’t entirely positive, he showed he could at least hold his own if given the opportunity.

Eventually, those opportunities started slipping away and Spooner was shipped to New York and then Edmonton, before eventually being traded to the Vancouver Canucks and bought out. It was certainly an unceremonious end to his NHL career, one that you could imagine he would want to change with another crack in North America at some point. That may be, but he’ll be in the KHL for at least one more season.

More On John Chayka, Arizona Coyotes

One of the biggest stories in the hockey world over the weekend was the abrupt end to John Chayka’s tenure with the Arizona Coyotes. After several years as general manager and president of hockey operations, which included a recent contract extension, Chayka terminated his deal and walked away from the club. The team promoted assistant GM Steve Sullivan to interim GM for the time being, but there are still plenty of questions as to why the relationship soured so quickly.

Today, some new information came out about what exactly happened and what is next for the former Coyotes executive. First of all, Craig Morgan of AZ Coyotes Insider reported that the rumors of Chayka heading to the Buffalo Sabres are “inaccurate.”  Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet writes that he thinks it could be the New Jersey Devils, or at least the ownership group that also runs the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and Crystal Palace of the English Premier League. Friedman notes that the position is “a major position in an organization that owns teams in more than one sport” but that he doesn’t know exactly what it would be.

The real story may take some time to come out, but in the meantime, Friedman also reports that he believes the offer made to Taylor Hall from Arizona ownership—the first inkling of a problem between Chayka and the rest of the organization—was five years at $7.25MM per season. With so much confusion surrounding the Coyotes now, Hall’s pending free agency has become even more interesting. The playoffs could obviously be a perfect place for the former MVP to show he deserves a lot more than that, though with a flat salary cap it may be difficult for him to find a full market.

For now, the Coyotes will have to operate without a full-time GM as they navigate the 24-team postseason. As they prepare for 2020-21, Sullivan will be given “every opportunity” to show he deserves the job.

NHL Issues Update On COVID-19 Testing

Just a few hours after the MLB had to postpone several games due to a COVID-19 outbreak, the NHL released their own testing results for the final week of training camp. Those results were of a much different tenor, as the league had zero positive results out of 4,256 tests from last week. More than 800 players were included in those tests. During the two-week Phase 3 period, the league had two positive tests. All 24 teams have arrived in the bubble cities and will continue to be tested daily.

It’s hard to take this news as anything other than extremely encouraging for a league that is trying to finish the 2019-20 season in the safest way possible. The hurdle of getting to the bubble cities healthy was seen by many as the most difficult one, given the strict quarantine protocols they would be under once arriving. The players will now be stuck inside hotels and rinks for the next several weeks (or months, depending on how they perform), effectively completely isolated from the outside world. If they are heading into those bubbles completely healthy, there seems to be a good chance they will be able to finish the season.

It is important to remember that there are still obstacles in the way, but it does appear as though hockey is back. The exhibition schedule will start tomorrow, with official round-robin and qualification round games starting on the weekend.

Morning Notes: Pastrnak, Hamilton, Colorado

Exhale, Boston Bruins fans. David Pastrnak is back. The superstar winger is expected to practice with the team today in Toronto as they prepare for their round-robin games. Pastrnak has been sitting out after coming in contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. Ondrej Kase, who has also been sitting out, has not yet joined the team in Toronto and will hopefully meet them at a later date. Remember, Kase will be subject to a four-day hotel quarantine after arriving in Toronto–whenever that is.

The Bruins will start their official games on Sunday when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers, trying to lock up the top seed that they held when the season was paused. They’ll have to watch and see who comes out of the qualification round before knowing which team is their first-round matchup.

  • It could potentially be the Carolina Hurricanes, but winning that qualification round may be a bit tougher for Rod Brind’Amour’s squad, given that they’re still missing Dougie Hamilton. The defenseman suffered an apparent injury last week during training camp and is still “unfit to play” according to his head coach. Hamilton is on the 31-man roster for the Hurricanes, which also includes Brett Pesce who is dealing with his own injury rehab. Pesce underwent shoulder surgery in March that gave him a four-to-six month recovery timeline.
  • Speaking of interesting 31-man rosters, the Colorado Avalanche included several young players that could be interesting difference-makers if inserted into a lineup. Shane Bowers, Bowen Byram and Conor Timmins all made the cut, while Vladislav Kamenev did not. Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic examines what exactly that means for the future of each prospect, while also looking at other pressing issues for the Avalanche like the goaltending battle between Pavel Francouz and Philipp Grubauer.

Nils Hoglander Loaned To SHL

After wowing the hockey world with his incredible skill, Nils Hoglander didn’t have to wait around long to sign his first NHL contract this spring. The Vancouver Canucks signed Hoglander to a three-year entry-level contract in April, with the intention of bringing him to training camp for the 2020-21 season. Unfortunately, that training camp will now be delayed, meaning Hoglander would be waiting around for months during his most important development period. To solve that problem, he has been loaned to Rogle in the SHL where he will compete until the NHL training camp opens in mid-November.

Hoglander, 19, was a second-round pick in 2019 by the Canucks, but quickly started to generate hype thanks to his highlight-reel lacrosse-style goals in both the World Juniors and Swedish league play. The 5’9″ forward has incredible skill with the puck and finished with 16 points in 41 games for Rogle last season. While that number doesn’t jump off the page, it’s important to remember he was just an 18-year old playing against professionals at the highest level in Sweden.

Whether he can bring the same sort of jaw-dropping talent to Vancouver isn’t clear, but getting him skating and training is obviously a priority. These types of loans will be common as teams try to keep their prospects on a strong development path. Obviously, Hoglander also doesn’t have an NHL roster spot locked up when the 2020-21 season comes back, meaning they’ll have to make another decision on where he will play. His entry-level deal includes a European Assignment Clause, meaning he could force his way back to Sweden if sent to (or left in) the minors at a certain point.

Snapshots: Lightning, Robertson, Blackhawks, Ehlers, Nurse

The Tampa Bay Lightning is traveling to Toronto, but will be doing so without their star defenseman. Victor Hedman will not be traveling with the team, according to The Athletic’s Joe Smith, due to personal reasons at his own request. However, he is expected to meet up with the team on Friday and is expected to participate in all three round-robin games. The blueliner did practice Saturday and is expected to work with strength coach Mark Lambert. He is expected to be tested regularly while in Tampa Bay.

The team did release its roster as NHL.com’s Bryan Burns reports that the team will only bring 28 players with them to Toronto. Including the team’s normal 25-man roster, the team is only adding forwards Mathieu Joseph, Alexander Volkov and goaltender Scott Wedgewood.

Also, head coach Jon Cooper said that Steven Stamkos remains day-to-day and is not expected to participate in the exhibition game, according to Smith. The veteran is hoping to be more involved in practice once the team gets to Toronto. “It’s still in the window of time to get him back,” said Cooper.

  • TSN’s Mark Masters writes that if 19-year-old Nick Robertson hopes to get into the Toronto Maple Leafs playoff lineup, he must show that he can be comfortable on the ice in their upcoming exhibition game. The team’s 2019 second-round pick had an impressive junior campaign and has impressed the team enough to keep him on the playoff roster for the upcoming 24-team tournament. What might be more surprising is that the youngster continues to get third-line looks during practice. “He needs to look comfortable,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “He needs to make an impact on the game, be it through his work ethic and enthusiasm or his ability to create some offence and capitalize when he gets chances. All those kinds of things … We’re just really looking to see if he can be comfortable and be himself and then see how it all sorts itself out in terms our other players.”
  • Brandon Cain of NHL.com reports that the Chicago Blackhawks will take four goaltenders with them to Edmonton for the upcoming 24-team tournament. That is necessary due to the status of veteran Corey Crawford, who recently admitted he tested positive for COVID-19 and missed the first 12 days of training camp. While he has been cleared and participated in a full practice Saturday, that doesn’t mean he’s in game shape for the tournament. The team also will bring Malcolm Subban, Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen.
  • NHL.com’s Mitchell Clinton reports that Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers, who was forced to leave Thursday’s scrimmage due to an undisclosed injury, was back at practice Saturday before the team leaves for Edmonton. He is expected to take on a second-line role with the team after scoring 25 goals in 71 games this year.
  • Edmonton Journal’s Kurt Leavins writes that Edmonton Oilers fans don’t need to worry about the fact that defenseman Darnell Nurse was forced to sit out Saturday’s team scrimmage with an undisclosed injury. The scribe described the injury as something he “tweaked” during practice earlier in the week. He’s expected to be ready to go.

Metropolitan Notes: Lindblom, Flyers, Sorokin, Islanders, McMichael

The Philadelphia Flyers announced their 31-man roster for the upcoming Qualifying Round with one name that stands out significantly as the team kept forward Oskar Lindblom on the roster despite talk that they team might wait until the 2020-21 season before returning the young forward on the ice after being diagnosed and treated for Ewing’s sarcoma in December.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the 23-year-old will be amongst the starters on the ice for the Flyers when the team returns to play, but to just be on the roster is quite an accomplishment for the young forward, who recently signed a three-year extension with the team. He could be a valuable substitute if injuries arise for the team after tallying 11 goals in 30 games before being diagnosed with cancer.

The team had a few other noteworthy players when it came to their roster. The team cut Carsen Twarynski, German Rubtsov, Tyler Wotherspoon and Nate Prosser from their training camp roster. However, the Flyers did keep undrafted prospect Egor Zamula on their roster, who played in just 28 junior games in the WHL last season, but dominated on the international stage.

Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi also reported that goaltender Carter Hart participated in his first full team practice Saturday since he left Tuesday’s scrimmage midway through the game with back spasms. The goalie claims that he expects to be 100 percent in time for their first game against Boston on Aug. 2.

  • The Athletic’s Arthur Staple (subscription required) writes that general manager Lou Lamoriello said that while newly signed KHL goaltender Ilya Sorokin is not eligible to play in the 24-team tournament, the netminder is expected to join the team in Toronto to get acclimated to his new team. Sorokin has been quarantining on Long Island and will join the team in Toronto once he has passed all his COVID-19 protocols.
  • Staple also released the Islanders playoff roster, which did not include several of the Islanders top AHL prospects. The team left behind forwards Kieffer Bellows, Oliver Wahlstrom, defenseman Grant Hutton and goaltender Jakub Skarek. Bellows was a bit of a surprise after a solid NHL debut in eight games this season.
  • No major surprises on the Washington Capitals roster, although the Capitals have decided to keep 2019 first-round pick Connor McMichael on their roster, although it’s more likely to give the 19-year-old a chance to soak in the playoff atmosphere in hopes he might be able to eventually challenge for a roster spot in 2020-21. McMichael is coming off an impressive season in the OHL with a breakout 47 goals and 102 points with the London Knights.

Arizona Coyotes To Name Steve Sullivan Interim General Manager

Within minutes of rumors that Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka had terminated his contract with the team 48 hours ago, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the team will name Steve Sullivan their interim general manager.

The club released a statement:

John Chayka has quit as the General Manager and President of Hockey Operations of the Arizona Coyotes. The Club is disappointed in his actions and his timing as the Coyotes prepare to enter the NHL’s hub city of Edmonton, where the team will begin post-season play for the first time since 2012. Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL. The Club is moving forward and has named Steve Sullivan as Interim General Manager. He has the full support of the entire organization including team ownership, executive leadership, players, and coaches. The Club will have no further comment on the matter, as the Club remains focused on the opportunity to pursue a Stanley Cup.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that Chayka had informed the Coyotes Friday that he was terminating his contract with his team. This comes shortly after reports that Chayka was given permission six weeks ago to talk to another potential employer about a job opportunity during the pandemic. Since then, Chayka has cleared out his office and was omitted from a key dinner between ownership and pending unrestricted free agent Taylor Hall, suggesting the rift. Chayka had either three or four years remaining on his contract, via different sources.

Chayka also released a statement of his own (via’s AZ Coyote Insider Craig Morgan):

“The past four years have been the most enjoyable of my life. In Arizona, I became a husband and a father, while working as hard as possible to make the Coyotes a Stanley Cup contender. I love our players, coaches, staff and fans and I very much wish I could be with the team in Edmonton. Sadly, the situation created by ownership made that an impossibility. That’s all I intend to say on this matter for now. A fuller, more detailed explanation may be necessary in the near future. Until then, I wish the Coyotes good luck in Edmonton, and thank every member of Our Pack for the support shown to Kathryn, our daughter and myself over the years. Also, I want to congratulate Steve Sullivan as he steps into a new role. We’ve worked side-by-side for years. He is a great person and a terrific hockey mind.”

Sullivan has been with the Coyotes’ franchise since September of 2014 and was holding the assistant general manager position since May of 2017. He has been the GM of the Tuscon Roadrunners, the team’s AHL franchise and has been overseeing the Coyotes’ amateur player development staff. The 46-year-old is a former player, who appeared in 1,011 career games with six different teams, including the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Coyotes. While there is no guarantee that Arizona doesn’t do an extensive search after the 24-team tournament is completed, Friedman notes that he wouldn’t be surprised if he got a long look as the permanent GM.

It should be noted that the news of Chayka’s departure from the team and Sullivan’s promotion come on the heels of the team leaving today for Edmonton to participate in the upcoming tournament playoffs.

Latest On John Chayka’s Situation In Arizona

Sunday: LeBrun reports that he’s heard from a league source that Chayka terminated his contract with the Coyotes 48 hours ago. However, there has been no confirmation from the team.

Saturday: Friedman provided an update on the situation, reporting that the issue stems from a job opportunity that they allowed Chayka to pursue.  It wasn’t a lateral move either.  Craig Morgan of AZ Coyotes Insider clarifies (Twitter link) that the job opportunity wasn’t with another NHL team either but instead another professional opportunity.  At one point, Friedman noted that a transition period was discussed which would see Chayka stay on through the end of the season was discussed although those talks fell apart.  As things stand, Chayka is still the GM in title but does not appear to be involved in the day-to-day operations of the team.

Friday: Earlier this week, it was reported that the Coyotes held a meeting with pending UFA Taylor Hall.  On the surface, that’s not a big deal as they’d naturally want to touch base with someone they paid a fair bit to get and would like to keep.  However, the fact that GM John Chayka was not involved (or even aware) of the meeting certainly raised some eyebrows.  President and CEO Xavier Gutierrez headlined Arizona’s representation at that meeting.

It appears that this isn’t a one-off situation.  A source indicated to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that Chayka’s office has been cleaned out while earlier in the day, Friedman noted that Chayka’s presence on the 52-person roster (including players and staff) wasn’t guaranteed.  While a general manager being with the team isn’t a must-have proposition, most are expected to join their teams in the bubble.  Friedman also added that other stories have come out about conversations with agents that haven’t involved Chayka.

Earlier this season, word came out that the Coyotes had been caught working out draft-eligible players with punishment still pending from the league.  Friedman mentions that Chayka’s mysterious absence has nothing to do with that.

Chayka has been at the helm in Arizona since 2016 and received a contract extension back in November even though he had a year and a half left on his deal at the time so to see questions about his future at this time comes as somewhat of a surprise.  Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic adds (Twitter link) that Chayka has three years left on his deal, meaning the extension was for two years even though it wasn’t announced at the time.

While the Coyotes haven’t had a lot of success under Chayka’s tenure (they’ve missed the playoffs in his three seasons with this year’s placement to be determined), he has assembled a decent core group with their defense and goaltending being among the stronger groups in the league.  However, it appears as if there’s some sort of chasm between him and ownership with both Friedman and LeBrun suggesting the two sides could be heading for a divorce.  That would be quite the turn of events considering the recent public vote of confidence but it seems like things are heading in that direction.

Could John Chayka Be Headed To Buffalo?

Plenty has been written about the status of Arizona Coyotes general manager John Chayka over the last couple of days. NHL writers Elliotte Friedman and Pierre LeBrun both indicated that the Coyotes and Chayka could be headed for a divorce despite three years remaining on Chayka’s contract. The belief is that Chayka was given permission to speak to another “professional opportunity,” six weeks ago. However, with a new owner and new management in place in Arizona, it’s not surprising if the team might prefer to bring in its own GM.

The Province’s Patrick Johnston has another theory, however. The scribe wonders whether that opportunity might have been with the Buffalo Sabres as the franchise fired their general manager six weeks ago and is currently operating with a skeleton executive office staff. Granted, the GM position is currently filled by newly-hired Kevyn Adams. However, the Sabres’ ownership, the Pegulas, own quite a bit more than just the Sabres. They own the Buffalo Bills, the Rochester Americans, the ice rink and a hotel nearby. He could be a candidate to run the whole entertainment combination. Buffalo, a team who has struggled with both success on the ice and struggles to generate much income on their own, might need someone who has had some success in that area, although the Coyotes haven’t necessarily shown that success on the ice as of yet.

Chayka was a candidate for Buffalo’s GM position three years ago before the team opted to go with Jason Botterill. However, the Coyotes refused to allow the Sabres the opportunity to interview him for the position. Throw in the fact that Chayka is a native of Buffalo, having grown up 40 minutes from there in Jordan Station and the dots do connect to a possible opportunity for Chayka if the Coyotes eventually let him out of his contract.
