Minor Transactions: 11/23/19

November 23, 2019 at 9:12 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As usual, Saturday is a very busy day on the NHL calendar with 28 teams in action.  There should be plenty of roster movement around the league as a result and we’ll keep tabs on those moves here.

  • The Senators announced (Twitter link) that they have returned defenseman Christian Jaros to Belleville of the AHL. His NHL stint lasted just one day but he did log a little more than ten minutes of ice time on Friday.  It’s expected that Nikita Zaitsev (personal) will be available for their next game on Monday.
  • Joseph Blandisi is back on his way to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, per a Penguins team release. The 25-year-old has a goal and an assist in nine games with Pittsburgh this season but had been a healthy scratch over their past two games.  The Pens are off until Monday so the move may just be to bank a little bit of cap space as well.
  • The Red Wings announced that they’ve assigned defenseman Joe Hicketts to AHL Grand Rapids.  The 23-year-old has played in six games with Detroit this season, logging a little over 18 minutes per night.  Although he has been productive in the minors (nine assists in 11 games), that didn’t translate to the big club as he has just a pair of NHL helpers on the season.
  • Eric Comrie is back with the Coyotes who announced that they’ve recalled the goalie from his conditioning stint.  He got into four games with the Roadrunners, posting a 2.75 GAA and a .900 SV%, but had spent the maximum amount of time possible in the minors and had to be recalled.  Where things go from here is a bit trickier.  He’s waiver-eligible and clearly the third-string option behind Darcy Kuemper and Antti Raanta.  In the short-term, he’ll likely be spending a lot of time in the press box in Arizona.
  • The Boston Bruins have returned Urho Vaakanainen to the AHL in anticipation of the return of Torey Krug to the lineup on Saturday. Vaakanainen has not done much scoring at either level this season –  scoreless in the NHL and just two assists in the AHL – but he did not look out of place in five games with Boston. The Bruins’ top defensive prospect, Vaakanainen may be developing into more of a smooth-skating puck transition defenseman than an offensive dynamo.
  • The San Jose Sharks have announced that veteran defender Dalton Prout has been placed on injured reserve. Taking his roster spot for the time being is forward Noah Gregor, promoted from the AHL Barracuda. Gregor has yet to record his first NHL point through ten games with the Sharks this season, but has been better than a point-per-game in the minors.
  • The Athletic’s Joe Yerden relays that the Buffalo Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian has already been activated, while forward Vladimir Sobotka has been placed on LTIR, which puts the Sabres just over $3MM into their LTIR allotment.

Snapshots: Laviolette, Gaudreau, Capitals

November 22, 2019 at 8:52 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

With the first coaching change of the season in the books, speculation has quickly turned to which team will be the next to make a move.  A popular speculative choice has been Nashville as the Predators have won just two of their last ten games and are only two points ahead of last place Los Angeles in the Western Conference.

However, head Peter Laviolette told reporters, including Paul Skrbina of The Tennessean, that he hasn’t been given any indication from management that his job could be on the line or that he feels any extra pressure at all to turn things around.  Considering that the Predators are built to win now though, that could change if their struggles continue and GM David Poile isn’t able to swing a trade to try to shake up the roster first.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Johnny Gaudreau’s struggles have led some to suggest that the Flames should consider moving the winger. Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic details (subscription required) the reasons why they shouldn’t be doing so, highlighted by the fact that making an in-season deal of that type of magnitude is extremely difficult to pull off while still getting full value in return.  After scoring three times in his first five games, he has just two in 20 contests since then.  Nonetheless, he still sits second on the team in scoring despite his struggles.
  • The Capitals have had to turn to some extreme measures to stay cap-compliant in the early going this season. Eventually, they will need to free up a bit of salary room as they won’t be able to just rely on LTIR the rest of the way.  However, it’s going to be easier said than done.  J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington highlights winger Richard Panik and defenseman Nick Jensen as possible candidates given their contracts but also points out the complications for moving both of them.  Panik’s contract (four years at $2.75MM) is a tough one given his lack of production while Jensen would leave them with a hole on the right side of their back end that they can’t fill internally.  Accordingly, whether it’s one of them or someone else, GM Brian MacLellan is going to have a tough decision to make once Carl Hagelin comes off LTIR early next month.

Metropolitan Notes: Sorokin, Zibanejad, Capitals

November 22, 2019 at 6:59 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Islanders goalie prospect Ilya Sorokin has been viewed as one of the top goalies not currently in the NHL for a few years now.  His early season performance has done nothing to change that sentiment as he has a 1.47 GAA and a .938 SV% through 18 games so far with CSKA Moscow (and both of those are actually a step back from his 2018-19 numbers).

While it has been a long wait to get the 24-year-old to North America, it appears that move could be on the horizon.  Sorokin’s KHL deal is up at the end of the season and Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports (Twitter link) that the netminder’s sole focus at this point is to get a deal done with the Islanders.  He’d undoubtedly be leaving some money on the table in the short term though as he’ll be subject to the entry-level system.  Thomas Greiss is a pending UFA and he recently indicated that he isn’t interested in having any discussion about a possible contract extension and if the plan is for Sorokin to come to the NHL next year, it’s quite likely that Greiss’s spot will be the one he takes.

Elsewhere in the Metropolitan:

  • Rangers center Mika Zibanejad did not accompany the team for their two-game road trip which started tonight in Ottawa, notes Larry Brooks of the New York Post. There was initially some hope that his upper-body injury wouldn’t keep him out for too long but it has now nearly been four weeks since he last suited up.  The good news for New York is that he took part in a practice on Thursday, albeit without contact.  Head coach David Quinn stated that Zibanejad will need to take part in a full practice and take contact before getting the green light to return which should have him in line to come back sometime next week.
  • The Capitals will be without center Nicklas Backstrom for a second straight game due to an upper-body injury, notes Samantha Pell of the Washington Post (Twitter link). The veteran is listed as day-to-day.  Meanwhile, while fellow center Nic Dowd is eligible to be activated off IR from his hand issue, he hasn’t been cleared to return just yet and remains day-to-day.

Calgary Flames Not Looking At Coaching Changes

November 22, 2019 at 4:51 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Calgary Flames are mired in a six-game losing streak and are now only ahead of the Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division. That’s a far cry from the team that won the Western Conference last season by six points, going 50-25-7. Still, even though the team has faced adversity this season and some are speculating about big changes, GM Brad Treliving isn’t considering one. On Sportsnet radio today, Treliving put his faith in the current group:

This is a good group that is underperforming. We’ve got to find a way to get back to a being a good group that is performing. It starts with myself. I believe fully in this coaching staff. I don’t stay in tune to the social media world, but the last couple of days I’ve been asked about changes.

The coaches aren’t going anywhere. Our top players aren’t going anywhere. While the outside world wants to—and rightly so—count us out, this is when you bunker in and get into the foxhole and try to make your team better.

Not only has there been speculation about the coaching staff, but the top players on Calgary have taken their fair share of criticism. Johnny Gaudreau has 18 points through 25 games but just one assist in his last six, while Sean Monahan has scored just five goals all season. This statement from Treliving should calm the trade speculation waters, but there is still a lot of work to be done in Calgary to get them back to contending.

It is interesting that he specified the “top players” aren’t going anywhere, which will leave room for some continued talk about other names like Travis Hamonic. The defenseman is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year and has shut down any extension talks, making his a tricky situation to navigate. If the team is not contending for a playoff spot by the deadline, it might make sense to cash in an asset like Hamonic to improve their future.

Treliving also announced that T.J. Brodie would be rejoining the team on their current road trip, but he is still not cleared to play since his collapse at practice recently.

Laughton Activated, Patrick Moved To Long-Term Injured Reserve

November 22, 2019 at 2:42 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Philadelphia Flyers have activated Scott Laughton from injured reserve after nearly a month on the sidelines, moving Nolan Patrick to long-term injured reserve in the process. Patrick’s placement there gives the team the cap flexibility to get Laughton back onto the roster, but doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be out any longer. The young forward could be activated as soon as he is healthy, given he has already missed the necessary amount of games with his migraine issue.

Laughton, 25, played nine games in October and ended up with three points before breaking a finger on his right hand. Though he wasn’t a huge offensive contributor, the Flyers lost one of their most reliable penalty killers and a depth piece that could move around the lineup. His return gives them another option down the middle, something they’ve been missing with Patrick out of the lineup.

The second-overall pick from 2017, Patrick has had two relatively underwhelming seasons so far in his NHL career. Not only did he miss time due to injury both years, but he also recorded just 61 points in 145 games. Though playing in the NHL at that age is an accomplishment for anyone, the Flyers were obviously hoping for a little bit more this year from the top pick. Unfortunately, Patrick has been sidelined indefinitely with a migraine issue and hasn’t played a single game so far.

The latest update from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer was that Patrick had made some progress but has still not been cleared to return.

Poll: Where Will Mike Babcock Coach Next?

November 22, 2019 at 2:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 13 Comments

When Joel Quenneville was fired by the Chicago Blackhawks on November 6th, 2018, many across the hockey world were stunned. One of the most decorated coaches in the history of the NHL was thrown aside in favor of Jeremy Colliton, a second-round pick and journeyman player who had found new life in coaching but had no experience at the NHL level. Quickly, countless stories were written about how Quenneville could take his time and decide what was next for his career, knowing that someone would give him a job whenever he felt ready to get back behind the bench. That opportunity presented itself five months later when he was hired by the Florida Panthers and given a hefty, five-year contract.

Earlier this week, just over a year after Quenneville found himself watching Blackhawks games from ski chalets instead of the United Center bench, Mike Babcock experienced a similar career moment. The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to move on from their experienced coach in favor of Sheldon Keefe—a second-round pick and journeyman player who had found new life in coaching but had no experience at the NHL level.

Babcock can now enjoy the slopes himself while the Maple Leafs try to turn things around, knowing that he too will have jobs waiting for him in the NHL whenever he decides to return to the coaching arena.

One thing is different between the two men and their situations (other than the number of Stanley Cups they’ve won as head coaches, which Quenneville leads 3-1) however, and that is the money left on their remaining contract. In Quenneville’s case, the Blackhawks still owed him the remainder of his $6MM salary for 2018-19 and another $6MM for 2019-20. For another team to hire him, they would have to work out an agreement with the Blackhawks to cover either that entire salary or part of it.

In Babcock’s case however, things are a little more complicated. The former Maple Leafs’ bench boss had three more years on his deal after this one, and Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that each of those seasons carried a salary of $5.875MM. That’s a lot of money and term to still owe a coach that isn’t working for you any longer, and something that could make Babcock’s future employment a little tricky. The Maple Leafs could potentially tell an interested team that they want them to take on the whole deal, which is an amount that many wouldn’t be able (or willing) to afford.

The first team that comes to everyone’s mind is the Seattle expansion club, which doesn’t need a head coach until the 2021-22 season. Babcock could take some time to enjoy the unemployed life before being able to set the culture for a brand new franchise. That would mean watching all of next season from the sidelines though. His intentions aren’t clear at this point.

Where do you think he will end up, and when? Cast your vote for the team below, and make sure to explain your thoughts in the comments.

Senators Notes: Zaitsev, Namestnikov, Depth

November 22, 2019 at 10:48 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Ottawa Senators will have to go without one of their key defenders tonight, as Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports that Nikita Zaitsev is back in Russia for personal reasons. Zaitsev has been logging more than 23 minutes for the Senators this season, his first with the team after following head coach D.J. Smith up the highway from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In his place, the team has recalled Christian Jaros (in addition to Maxime Lajoie and J.C. Beaudin earlier today) and will insert him into the lineup. More from Ottawa:

  • Vladislav Namestnikov has a tailbone injury and will be out a week, according to Garrioch. That’s a tough break for a player that has found new life in Ottawa, scoring six goals and 12 points through his 20 games since being acquired from the New York Rangers. Namestnikov, who turns 27 today, is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
  • As CapFriendly points out, these recalls have stretched the Senators organizational depth incredibly thin, at least on defense. The team has just a single defenseman, Andreas Englund, still in the minor leagues on an NHL contract. Lassi Thomson and Olle Alsing have also signed their entry-level deals, but were both loaned away at the start of the season. If the team suffers any further injuries, we could see an interesting recall.

Minor Transactions: 11/22/19

November 22, 2019 at 9:46 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The hockey world may be talking about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ performance under new head coach Sheldon Keefe a lot today, but there was plenty of other action last night–some with real consequences. The Calgary Flames, who have struggled for an identity all season, were torn apart by the defending Stanley Cup champions and look like a team searching for answers in the wrong textbook. The Florida Panthers completed their second incredible comeback in just over a week and the New York Islanders stayed hot with another overtime victory. As teams take in some video sessions and examine what happened last night, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves.

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled J.C. Beaudin and Maxime Lajoie for their game tonight, as Vladislav Namestnikov is not expected to play. Beaudin is actually taking up residence as the fourth-line center, with Colin White moved over to the wing for the time being.
  • Christian Djoos is back with the Washington Capitals, after starring with the Hershey Bears for the first month of the season. The 25-year old defenseman has played 108 games in the NHL over the last two seasons but due to cap restraints had to go down to start the year. Tyler Lewington has been returned to the AHL in his place.
  • It is a day that ends in “Y” so Charles Hudon has been involved in a transaction once again. This time he’s back up with the Montreal Canadiens as they prepare for the weekend action.
  • Matt Luff is heading back to the minor leagues, assigned to the Ontario Reign today by the Los Angeles Kings. The 22-year old forward played in four games during this most recent recall, after spending 33 games with the team last season.
  • Givani Smith has been activated from injured reserve by the Detroit Red Wings, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to suit up for the NHL club. Smith was immediately reassigned to the minor leagues where he has played most of this season.
  • The Nashville Predators have sent Steven Santini back to the minor leagues, as they prepare for a game tomorrow night against the St. Louis Blues. Santini has played two games for the Predators this year after being acquired in the P.K. Subban this summer.
  • Nicolas Roy has been moved to the AHL by the Vegas Golden Knights, who have been doing this consistently all season to save some cap space. The team is banking room by having fewer than 23 players on the roster on non-game days.
  • With Scott Laughton activated from injured reserve, the Philadelphia Flyers have sent Andy Andreoff back to the AHL. Andreoff has played in six games for the Flyers this season.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have returned Jayson Megna to the minors.  He has played in eight NHL games this season but has averaged less than seven minutes per night.  The move suggests that Tyson Jost may be nearing a return.

Snapshots: MacTavish, Brouwer, Forbort, Avalanche

November 21, 2019 at 8:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Craig MacTavish’s tenure with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL was certainly short-lived as he was let go after eight games with the team.  However, he’ll be back behind the bench next month as TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that he will be Canada’s head coach at next month’s Spengler Cup.  The position had initially been offered to Wayne Gretzky but was declined.  Among those that are expected to be named to MacTavish’s staff is Misha Donskov, the Director of Hockey Operations for the Golden Knights.

More from around the hockey world:

  • While Troy Brouwer has been with the Blues for more than a week and recently signed a one-year deal, he hasn’t been given clearance to play just yet. Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that the winger is still awaiting his work visa and he can’t suit up until he gets that.  Brouwer was expected to play on Thursday and is hopeful that the issue will be resolved in time for their next game on Saturday.
  • Kings defenseman Derek Forbort recently took part in a full skate with AHL Ontario, mentions Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider. He has missed the entire season as he continues to work his way back from a back injury.  It’s a contract year for the 27-year-old who will enter unrestricted free agency for the first time in July so getting back is of particular importance for him.  As for Los Angeles, if Forbort returns to form, he could be one of the more intriguing trade candidates closer to the trade deadline.
  • It appears the Avalanche are getting close to getting at least one of their top forwards back. Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that winger Mikko Rantanen could rejoin the team soon as he continues to ramp up his skating while working his way back from a lower-body injury.  The news isn’t as good for Gabriel Landeskog though.  He has yet to start skating after suffering a foot injury last month and will be going to be re-evaluated later this week.

Atlantic Notes: Sabres, Keefe, Ritchie

November 21, 2019 at 7:22 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Sabres GM Jason Botterill hasn’t been hiding the fact that he is looking for forward help.  However, it’s not just the trade market that he’s scouring as Botterill also indicated to reporters, including John Vogl of The Athletic (Twitter link) that they have also considered adding a free agent although they haven’t pulled the trigger on that just yet.  Veterans Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville each have a history in Buffalo and have been skating with the hopes of landing another NHL contract.

The team has been hit hard on the injury front when it comes to their forward group but they’re pretty healthy on the back end with eight on their active roster plus Zach Bogosian nearing a return.  Their salary cap situation will make any sort of move tricky though as they’ll need to free up some money before they can activate Bogosian.  Accordingly, any move that sees a defenseman move for a forward will need to be pretty close to cap neutral for them.  TSN’s Darren Dreger reported in the latest Insider Trading (video link) that some believe that Botterill is hoping to get a deal or two done within the next week.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • The Maple Leafs wasted little time getting their new head coach under an NHL contract as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports (Twitter link) that the team has inked Sheldon Keefe to a three-year contract. There was no provision in Keefe’s deal with the AHL Marlies that said what his NHL pay would have been upon being named head coach so they moved quickly to get a deal done.
  • Bruins winger Brett Ritchie is dealing with a flare-up of an early-season infection, notes NBC Sports Boston’s Joe Haggerty. This and other injuries have limited him to just 14 games so far this season where he has recorded three points while logging just under 11 minutes a night.  There is no timetable for his return.
