Latest On Jack Eichel Extension

Darren Dreger of TSN joined The Instigators on WGR 550 in Buffalo for his weekly chat, and discussed the ongoing contract negotiations with Jack Eichel. Eichel is heading into the final year of his entry-level contract, and there has been constant speculation that he’ll sign a long-term extension before the season begins. Not so fast says Dreger:

I’m now getting the sense that he’s okay starting the season without a contract extension in place.

It’s clearly part speculation on Dreger’s part, but it does make some sense from Eichel’s side. Losing part of last season to injury has brought his overall production through the first two years of his career, even though he remains one of the brightest young stars in the league. There is a chance he could push his contract even further up the salary charts with a breakout year.

That said, Buffalo already knows what they have in Eichel and seem willing to pay up for it. Recently GM Jason Botterill was quoted saying he wants to get his young center locked up for the max term, and that there had been nothing but positive talks between the two sides so far. It still seems likely that something will get done before the start of training camp, but if it doesn’t there is little cause for alarm.

Morning Notes: Chytil, Bergeron, Kostka

After trading away their first-round pick in several consecutive years, the New York Rangers selected twice on the first day of the draft picking Lias Andersson at #7, and Filip Chytil at #21. While Andersson is set to try and crack the NHL roster out of training camp, it doesn’t look like Chytil will even be able to take part in the rookie tournament. A report out of the Czech Republic says that Chytil is dealing with a torn leg muscle suffered while playing in the Four Nations tournament.

While this injury hasn’t been verified by the Rangers, it would be a disappointing start to Chytil’s career with the team. He signed an entry-level contract in July, and though he isn’t expected to make the jump to the NHL—he’s just 17 after all—there was still a decision to be made on where he should spend this season. He could have been sent to Canadian junior where the North Bay Battalion selected him seventh overall in this year’s import draft, to the AHL to suit up for the Hartford Wolf Pack, or back to Europe where he could continue to develop on loan.

  • Patrice Bergeron underwent sports hernia surgery back in May, but is back on the ice and feels like he’ll be ready for the start of training camp with the Boston Bruins. Bergeron spoke to Matt Kalman of NHL.com, and said even though he’s still getting some treatment for the injury he feels ready enough to start camp. Hernia injuries can linger as we’ve seen in the past, and now at 32-years old it will be interesting to see if Bergeron can get off to a quick start with the Bruins. In the Atlantic Division, where it will be a dog fight for the playoff spots all year long, wasted games in October could come back to haunt them.
  • Former NHL defenseman Mike Kostka has signed a tryout with Swedish team AIK, after spending all of 2016-17 in the minor leagues. The undrafted NCAA free agent has played 85 career NHL games, split between Toronto, Tampa Bay, Chicago, New York and Ottawa. At 31, it’s tough to see him make it back to the NHL on a full-time basis, but as always this could open up Olympic consideration. Kostka has never represented Canada on the international stage, but it wouldn’t be out of the question to see him on the roster.

Latest On Columbus Blue Jackets’ RFA Talks

Even as the calendar turns over into September and NHL training camps are just around the corner, the Columbus Blue Jackets remain locked in important negotiations. Alexander Wennberg and Josh Anderson, two core restricted free agents, remain unsigned. As Aaron Portzline of The Athletic writes (subscription needed), it doesn’t look like anything is close. The Blue Jackets aren’t willing to give in to contract demands for players who are pre-arbitration, while agents look to continuously press the average salaries higher and higher.

Anderson apparently will begin skating in Switzerland to stay in shape, if the contract talks aren’t finished in the next few weeks. He’s coming off his first full year in the NHL, in which he scored 17 goals and showed off his versatility. Wennberg remains the team’s first-line center, and will likely be one of the three most important forwards on the team this year. Missing training camp would be a step back, though there is clearly no animosity between the two sides.

It’s business after all, something that is being seen all around the league this year. David Pastrnak, Bo Horvat and Andreas Athanasiou remain unsigned among many others, and even though there are often late-summer RFA signings, it’s still a scary proposition for fans to wait this long. Columbus still has plenty of cap space to sign both long-term if they so choose, but with big extensions coming up for the 2018-19 season—Cam Atkinson in particular—they’ll have to be very careful with how they spend their dollars.

CHL Minimum Wage Litigation Receives Boost

The class action lawsuit by former and current Canadian Hockey League players against the CHL for failing to pay players minimum wage received a boost this week. TSN’s Rick Westhead reports that the lawyers for the players obtained the standard player contract for the QMJHL prior to 2013 that supports the contention that players were employees rather than amateurs.

The language used in the QMJHL SPC refers to “employment” and “supervision and control of the club,” which usually indicates employment rather than amateurism. The contract also states that players receive weekly salaries, and that certain clauses detail how a player may lose salary due to a suspension. The argument is that this language is more indicative of an employee-employer relationship than an amateur relationship.

The basic premise of the lawsuit is that players should have been paid at least minimum wage while playing for the junior clubs. The clubs’ counterargument is that players were merely amateur students and not employees. The crux of the issue will be whether the players were treated like employees, regardless of what titles they were given.

 

Ryan Malone Signs PTO With Minnesota Wild

Just moments after the Florida Panthers announced their latest professional tryout, the Minnesota Wild got in on the action, signing Ryan Malone to a PTO. Malone has been out of professional hockey for two seasons, but perhaps his player-coach role in Da Beauty League this summer has made him yearn for the rigors of an NHL training camp.

While it remains extremely unlikely that Malone would make the Wild out of camp, perhaps he’s after an AHL contract to resume his playing career. Last suiting up for the Hartford Wolf Pack after a buyout by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Malone could also potentially be an option for Team USA at the upcoming Olympic Games. While that isn’t a very exciting proposition given his absence from professional hockey, he does have Olympic experience from the 2010 Games—where he won a silver medal—and was once a very effective power forward in the NHL.

With six seasons of 20 or more goals and 44 NHL fights to his name, Malone toed the line between sniper and enforcer for Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay. He also has strong ties to Minnesota, where he spent four years playing for St. Cloud State and still lives with his family.

Florida Panthers Sign Harry Zolnierczyk To PTO

The Florida Panthers continue to give out professional tryouts for their upcoming training camp, with the latest one going to Harry Zolnierczyk. The 29-year old is coming off a Stanley Cup Finals appearance with the Nashville Predators, and will try to convince the brass in Florida that he deserves an NHL contract. The Panthers have already invited both Brandon Pirri and Nikolai Belov to camp to battle for the last few roster spots.

Zolnierczyk is an example of a former undrafted college free agent, who has worked hard to keep himself relevant in professional hockey since coming out of Brown University. Bouncing back and forth from the AHL, he played 24 games for the Nashville Predators last season, his fifth NHL team. While proving capable as an AHL scoring threat, he’s never been given much of a chance to play a regular role in the NHL, and will try to show the Panthers that he deserves more than that.

Snapshots: Pastrnak, Dahlen, Patrick

David Pastrnak leads a group of intriguing restricted free agents into September with no contract, and it doesn’t sound like much progress has been made between his camp and the Boston Bruins of late. Joe McDonald of the Boston Sports Journal reports that the team hasn’t even gotten a response on their $6MM offer for either six or seven years.

Agent J.P. Barry is set to meet with the Bruins on September 1st, meaning a contract could follow in short order, but there does seem to still be a gap between the two sides. After a huge breakout by Pastrnak last season, handing an $8MM salary out still may be a bit worrisome for the Boston front office.

  • Jonathan Dahlen, the Vancouver Canucks prospect acquired from Ottawa in last season’s Alex Burrows deal, still hasn’t decided on a European team to play for this season, according to Rick Dhaliwal of News 1130. Though Dahlen will be attending the Canucks’ rookie camp in Penticton, it doesn’t seem like he’s destined for the Utica Comets this season after all. Instead, he’ll likely play in the SHL, a step up after dominating Sweden’s second-league last season.
  • In what may be just a bit of bluster from the GM in order to motivate a young player, Ron Hextall of the Flyers told Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer that Nolan Patrick will have to earn his way onto the team and that he’s perfectly fine with sending him back to the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. It’s unlikely that Patrick doesn’t crack the squad, but Hextall was clear that they will do whatever they think is right for the long-term development of their prized center. Patrick’s game is arguably more ready for the NHL than fellow top prospect Nico Hischier, and he should be in the opening lineup for the Flyers in game one.

Latest On Danis Zaripov’s NHL Search

Legendary KHL winger Danis Zaripov was cleared to sign with an NHL club this week despite his ongoing two-year suspension from the Russian league, and yesterday we learned that the Tampa Bay Lightning had made contact. Today, that connection becomes even more apparent as Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Lightning are a “preferred landing spot” for Zaripov’s camp.

The 36-year old shares an agent—Dan Milstein of Gold Star Hockey—with both Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov, and Tampa Bay has a long history with giving opportunities to Russian players. Zaripov, who is one of the greatest playoff performer in KHL history, could find a nice temporary home with the Lightning as he appeals his suspension.

The two-year ban was handed out earlier this year, but the NHL ruled that Zaripov wouldn’t have been suspended under their internal doping policy. He’s clear to sign a contract with anyone, and since he’s over the age of 35 it could include performance bonuses (should it be just one year in length). The Lightning have just over $3.25MM in projected cap room for the season.

Thomas Vanek Considering Several Options

We haven’t heard much about the interest in Thomas Vanek this summer, as the talented offensive forward remains unsigned now through August. Today though, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune caught up with Vanek, who says he’s looking at a few options including waiting for the Detroit Red Wings. Vanek admits that he’ll have to make a final decision soon.

As we’ve looked at in the past, Vanek doesn’t have the same incentive to delay a signing in order to play in the Olympics, as Austria didn’t qualify for the event. He told Russo that he’s not used to waiting this long for a contract, and it’s true; both of his last UFA contracts were signed on July 1st. There is likely several teams with interest, but it’s unclear what kind of guarantee the 33-year old will receive.

Remember that since Vanek played all of last season and isn’t 35 yet, he’s ineligible for any incentive-based contract, meaning he’ll have to settle for whatever salary is offered to him. Though teams are well aware of his offensive upside, he isn’t a strong skater and comes with considerable defensive deficiencies. Teams that have considerable depth could likely shelter his minutes to get out positive production, or rebuilding squads could use him as trade deadline bait like Detroit last season. The Red Wings received a third-round pick and Dylan McIlrath for Vanek at the deadline last season, and could pull off a similar deal this year should he sign with them once again.
