Treat the comments as an AMA (but preferably draft-related) or chat amongst yourselves!
Can we speed this up? LOL
Sources say the 2020 NHL Draft is still ongoing to this day. Just be grateful we don’t have 8 hours ahead of us tonight!
I tried to scan ahead on my TV but it didn’t work.
Looks like 8 hours wasn’t that far off of a prediction
With all the draft capital and some young players, do you see the Hawks trading up in the first round to maybe grab Martone? Assuming they don’t grab him at #3 (which I assume they won’t).
I still say if they keep it Frondell should be #3.
They can try, but I think other teams who are looking to trade up (the Islanders, for one) have more appealing pick packages to convince someone to move out of the top 10.
@Unclemike – agreed. There’s a tier break between Frondell/Misa and the other forwards in this class.
Anyone know of a LEGAL place to stream the draft? Last couple of years I’ve been stuck with these absolutely rancid Sportsnet “influencer” commentary restreams, and I would prefer not to hang myself this year.
ESPN’s got it in the States ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You don’t get ESPN?
I haven’t had cable since 2011.
Neither do I but I still get ESPN.
I spent 20 minutes trying to find a stream and I literally had to resort to pirated streams to get something functional. Cable corporations should go straight to hell, hockey is already full of ads and these dinosaurs still want to hoard access to the sport.
You Tube TV
Oh crud, NHL Network isn’t covering the draft live, so I’m stuck with ESPN’s joke coverage (#$@%!).
Have to synch the SiriusXM NHL channel feed to the TV.
It’s on NHL all day tomorrow. And ESPN+ or ESPN2 I think. Not positive.
Fortunately, I’ve got the audio from the Sirius gang synched up perfectly so I can mute the ESPN crew. :)
Does Mason West get taken tonight?
Certainly in the realm of possibility, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s likely. 33-40 range feels right for him with the uncertainty of potential DI football offers still looming.
Could end up being a nice 1-2 for teams at the top.
There you go!!
West goes 29th… but to a team that picked No.3 overall.
I do love that Chicago took West with Tulsky’s pick… I’m going to remember that.
Virtual draft sucks and why does ESPN insist that men want to hear women talk about mens hockey?
ESPN is a joke.
Don’t know. Why do you insist that a person have a penis to know anything about hockey?
It helps if you want to stick handle.
One half of Schagens: complete.
Isles will have to do some wheeling and dealing quickly to make that happen.
At this pace, they’ll have all night
This new format is worse than I thought. I’m waiting for Dr. Evil to appear in one of the board room feeds.
Good thing this will be one and done!
Yeah I don’t know why anyone thought this would be better
the WORST broadcast ever. Could ESPN have picked the most DULL & DRAB cast ever ???
I keep hearing next year’s draft is better, but the only name I’ve heard is McKenna.
Is there a Malkin or an Yzerman in that draft where the teams at 2 or 3 are very happy, too?
Tanking for McKenna isn’t as good if you have a Pat Falloon waiting for you when the ping pong balls don’t go your way.
Coupla awesome Swedes in Ivar Stenberg and Viggo Björck. Huge, productive C in Ryan Roobroeck too. Projected top D is Keaton Verhoeff. All would be 1OA contenders this year.
I want to see if Davidson trades up 34 back into the 1st round to pull off his 3 first round pick move he likes!
And finally… now the draft begins.
Bingo!
This Utah pick will be interesting.
So far no big surprises…
Desnoyers next?
I think Utah is going to do… something.
@Fargo Chipper – likely him or Brady Martin. Would not be surprised to see the Schaegens prophecy fulfilled here with a trade too.
Crystal ball award goes to Fargo!
BIG Blackhawks L
@NSco1996 – disagree heavily. Best player available by a significant margin, IMO.
Well he’s a man of few words at least. Like him already. If he can win a face off I’ll like him even more.
The whole s#%+ of Sharks going for Frondell got my hopes up, i would’ve preferred Hagens or Martone, Martone because he seems like a better version of Tom Wilson and Hagens looks like a complete fit to how the hawks have been drafting Speed and playmaking
Blame Cam Robinson. He was like a dog chasing it’s tail.
Frondell gives us some size up front…..finally.
It looks like he won’t get pushed around in the corners, which we need desperately.
I can TOTALLY do without these celebrity Goofs. My word.
Hagens is falling right into Trotz’ lap. Don’t drop it Barry!
That’s like asking a toddler to catch a fastball.
Yep he dropped it.
@Gbear – evergreen.
All Trotz’s talk about adding skill is all BS. Trotz will always take the muckers and grinders.
Still no intrigue.
Who goes first… Hagens or the winger – Martone?
You suck Trotz.
So the rumors were true… Martin goes in the top five.
Dubas has got to be burning up the phones looking to move up if Martone continues to be available. His good friend Ron Francis is the President of No.8
So much for that…
Flyers get an old school Flyer!
Schaegens truthers, where we at!?
I really like him, but with the Flyers so desperate for top 6 centers passing on him it gives me pause.
Pause is warranted. I personally think Martone is the higher-ceiling player, though.
With Hagens, McQueen and O’Brien still available, I think the Kraken are going center again… although Mrtka and Kron ARE countrymen.
Bruins win this draft.
Schaegens :(. But yeah, spectacular pick for a team that doesn’t make spectacular picks.
Now it gets interesting…
Love this pick for the Kraken!
Another center to Seattle… that’s four in the top ten in five years. You build down the middle.
How far does McQueen fall?
Wouldn’t be too surprised if he gets to the 15 range. Prob goes in the next few picks tho.
If the Flyers can somehow trade up for McQueen it’s a great first round.
(Fingers crossed) BUF and ANH can’t afford to risk a guy with a bad back.
Is he the son of Lightning McQueen?
Fourth cousin.
One player I really want and 3 I’d be very happy with…
Needs the Ducks to take one from that latter pile.
UPDATE- F you, Verbeek.
I’ll take two of Eklund, Aitcheson or Smith, though.
Anything to these Crosby rumors? Keep hearing about it and just saw the Kevin Weekes tweet
Nothing to them in the slighest: link to x.com
Thank you for debunking
Was reading on San Jose Hockey Now… Apparently NYI offered Dobson for SJ’s #2 pick. San Jose said no.
Apparently Buffalo is shopping Byram as well, which uh… Buffalo understands you need good players to win, right? You can’t trade players for futures forever, especially not when you trade away the prospects too.
Eklund?
Great sleeper pick for the Pens — Kindel was 10th on my personal board
Can you sell me…cuz I hate it right now.
One of the better playmaking wingers in the class, great skating, above-average shot. Think he’s got multiple 55-65 point seasons in him, which warrants that selection in this weak of a class
And if it’s any consolation, I think Nesbitt is a significant reach with this pick. Had him at No. 23.
If Philly was good at drafting, they wouldn’t be in a situation where their best goalie posts .888 on the season.
We need size. We need grit.
We need pedigree. Could have added two top 12 players.
Instead, a bunch of guys in the 20-30 range, including one at #11.
Maybe we can deal one of Rust or Rakell and have four firsts, that’d be decent, but…I always like a quality over quantity approach in drafts.
Sigh.
So, he REACHES for a midget.
What in the actual…Don Sweeney BS is this.
So the Pens are basically trading Eklund?
Dubas is such a genius… just ask everyone in Toronto. He turns No.11 and No.12 into No.20, No.22 and No.31. Great way to build a foundation.
So… not Eklund… Nesbit. Hmmm.
I actually fear who Trotz takes with the next two picks he has tonight.
Here comes the weird!……
Like the Flyers picks.
Nesbitt is my biggest reach so far.
Did they need to trade up to get him? I doubt it.
Probably, but not that far.
I think with the Martone pick the Flyers have their potential star player. If Nesbitt can’t develop into a second line center they at least may have a good third line center.
3C is his ceiling, IMO
ESPN agrees:
29. Jack Nesbitt, F, Windsor (OHL)
NHL projection: Middle-six two-way center
NHL floor: Fourth-line defensive center
I did not have a Flyers and Penguins trade on my BINGO card, but I love the pick.
Boy!… The D and Eklund are dropping.
Kinda makes sense to me. Building around a centre is how you build a winning team, so I feel like centres are the focus of scouting; because of that, I feel like they are the most accurately projected. So the other positions are going to be more of a gamble.
Gotta think a run of Dmen will begin soon.
Of all the celebrities reading off names tonight, Mrs. Gaudreau is the best of the lot. So much nicer to see real people being genuine.
She’s one that was appropriate anyway. The Hockey players are fine and Chuck was OK. The rest please go away.
Adam Sandler is a good one too; Happy Gilmore is a movie that plays every summer on CBC, it’s like a Canadian tradition. Why? Who knows. But for him to rep that character in the jersey, kind of cool ngl.
Didn’t see that one . I had my groceries delivered at 7PM in between the Hawks 2 picks. LOL I missed 7,8,9.
Is Bettman really gonna pretend like we didn’t know the Dobson trade happened several hours ago…?
Grampa, we have internet. On our phones, even!
Hey Josh, what’s your floor/ ceiling or NHL comp for Frondell?
Think he may fit better as a winger. Think a higher-powered Adrian Kempe. I envision many 90-plus point seasons best-case scenario, worst case he’s still an effective second-line guy for a long time
Isles made out like villains.
Gotta make up for that DiPietro draft eventually.
Good work by Darche.
Couldn’t disagree with you more and I’m an Islanders fan. They used a number one pick overall to draft the player that was injured last season. They trade away a defenseman with scoring potential who was drafted about fifth overall for two mid round pics which will likely not amount to anything. They obtained the prospect that has very little upside. They are weaker as a team next year then they were before they entered this draft.
Isles did what we should have done.
I assume all 4 of the guys I still want will go between now and 22.
Folks, who’s your biggest steal so far, and who’s your biggest reach?
Steal – Hagens, at the expense of the Flyers
Reach – Nesbitt, by the Flyers
Stupidest thing overall – 22 and 31 to take Nesbitt
Ditto. Would also throw Bear and Eklund in there as steals.
I think Eklund dropping so far is the biggest steal.
I think giving up No.12 for No.22 and No.31 when you seriously lack quality in your pipeline… that’s just as stupid.
Sometimes… somewhere… when want and desire find each other in the dark… stupid finds stupid.
Okay, I’ll chill out a bit. Martin was the worst reach. Bit Nesbitt is only slightly worse.
Bruins winners.
Trotz sucks.
C-list celebs getting a boost tonight. :D
Don’t kid yourselves Isles fans… that Metro genius in Pittsburgh totally won this draft. Taking a No.20 pick at No.11 – Brilliant!!!
And then shedding that No.12 for the analytics value grab of a free third round pick… again – Brilliant!!!
Dubas is so smart. While everyone else is playing checkers, he’s playing 3-D chess… problem is, it’s a checkers tournament.
That’s a bit off the wall. You his brother or something? I don’t think he’s all that great personally. LOL
Unless that was sarcasm. LOL Then I get it.
Uncle Mike… You get it. It was 100% sarcasm.
Yeah I glanced at it too quickly. Then read it again. My bad. LOL
How do you feel about this one? LOL
I don’t know anything about Zonnon other than this is where he slots. I do know that right around here is where the floor falls out from under picks.
Again, good luck Pittsburgh.
Looks like the blues got a pretty good player at 19
That’s a reach. WOW Plus they took the wrong Goalie. Ravensbergen would have been a reach. But I’d be cool if the Hawks did it at 25.
I had Ravensbergen as my 1A in the class and Frolov and Andreyanov in my 1B tier. Certainly a reach but still an intriguing pick. .942 SV% (not a typo) in 37 Russian junior games.
Cbus goes waaaay off the board! :0
#1 rated international goalie, and from a strong Russian system. Considering how many “Where the hell did he come from?” Russians Columbus already has on the roster, they must have some kind of insight the rest of the league doesn’t.
Ultimately, a team has to draft who they believe to be the best name available, and for CBJ, it was Andreyanov.
That may be, but no one saw that coming.
Honestly! I could do without the Hollyweird stink at the draft, Beyond that, Play on.
I think we all could .
Here comes Vern’s kid.
Nope, it’s vanilla Dman. This is awful.
I hope he can also do a mean impersonation of Juice Bieksa
21 to NSH, OTT receives 23 and 67. That’s a steep addition to only move up two spots, Nashville…
Trotz is insane.
But I do like this pick for them. Reid was in the late teens on my personal board and was my best D still available.
Andreyanov before Ravensbergen?
Dude.
Stop taking second round picks with first round picks, you ****ing dork.
Dubas is outdoing Trotz tonight.
Sens take the Dman Trotz should’ve taken.
Well the Kings don’t need a Goalie so that sets up Ravensbergen to the Hawks if they want! There’s no way I pick both Hawks picks right. Well Pittsburgh does. Bummer
Nashville and Pittsburgh having a heated battle to see who can have the worst draft night.
Will the Hawks draft Potter? The fastest skater in the draft or someone like Spence who has the physical attributes of Martone as “Bedard’s and Nazar’s future bodyguard”?
Either big winger or Ravensbergen.
Yep 6’6″ They draft bigger players than the Bulls.
Horcoff takes the cake as my lowest-ranked prospect selected so far. Had him as an early third-rounder.
A lot of the media rankings had him going around #24, but I feel like there’s an element of “hey I know that last name” going on in every media ranking.
You just don’t understand the genius of Kyle Dubas.
Josh, thanks for doing this. I really enjoyed the banter and you saved me from the ESPN banter… such a cruel punishment.
Again, thanks Josh.
This one is an OK pick. Reach, Reach, OK. Terrible night.
None of Dubas’ picks in any Penguins draft I can recall have had first line or top pairing potential. Why does he hate upside so much?
You can’t middle six your way to a Cup.
Hawks with a reach here.
Nestrasil was 30 in the last Mock I saw. Not a huge reach.
I don’t think I saw a single draft ranking that had him anywhere that high.
link to flohockey.tv
Davidson does it again!!!!! 3 first rounders.
That’s a mock draft, not a draft ranking.
Well what did I say?
Mock drafts are a mockery.
Trotz should be fired immediately.
The last couple picks I’ve been like “Literally who?” and I’m trying to figure out who has them ranked in the 1st round.
Still looking.
Andreyanov is justifiable because goalies are hard to project and he seems like a promising prospect from a good system. Fair.
Whomst is Lee???
Bob McKenzie had him at #31, fwiw. Kid has skill but is a poor skater.
The Capitals chase size and upside.
Ugh.
Hot Take:
I like Haoxi Wang for San Jose at 30. A reach? Maybe. But I like it.
Lynden Lakovic is a darn fine hockey name.
When is Eric Comrie due back in Who-ville?
Why do we have so many pick for picks trades, but not any players moving for picks?
Ah… Tulsky and Dubas… both super-smart pick traders. Again, the game is checkers boys, not 3-D chess. Nobody’s impressed with your teams that can’t win in the playoffs but were built through “brilliance”.
Hawks are having an interesting draft.
The Mason West sighting. And another big dude.
same highschool as Sam Rinzel another Minnesota Highschool product
This Sharks pick is puzzling. They traded for Askarov already. I dunno.
Makes perfect sense to me. Goalies take a long time to develop. Askarov is their guy NOW, Ravensbergen is an option in 2030. Sharks prospect pool is thin after trading a couple of prospects away while a couple more haven’t been able to establish themselves in lower leagues.
And in 2030 Askarov will be in his prime (if he pans out as expected). Only one crease.
That’s a good problem to have though. Keep one, trade one. Or have an elite tandem in net.
Preds just had that problem and got a middling return for it.
Sharks draft a goalie. Prudent decision, since their prospect pool is pretty thin after Askarov and Carriere.
Sadly it seems Davidson is still counting on Gajan. I’m not but then I never really was. Well at least I don’t have to start watching right away tomorrow anyway! LOL
Why can’t the NHL do something more to make the draft a little more entertaining? The one draft guarantee is Bettman will add to his mini-me photo album…
They actually found a way to make it worse.
Love that pick for Calgary. A Sun Devil goes to the Flames (and he’s a burner!). :D
Lord Josh, who’s your Top 10 prospects left for Day 2?
@PyramidHeadcrab — my BPAs along with where I have them on my board
14. RW Cameron Schmidt
21. RW Alexander Zharovsky
22. C Ivan Ryabkin (I know, but I’m still betting on his upside in this weaker draft)
24. C Cole McKinney
25. C William Moore
28. LW Malcolm Spence
29. D Blake Fiddler
31. LW Jack Murtagh
32. RW Jakob Ihs-Wozniak
33. C Adam Benák
Do you think this is a weak draft in terms of the 2-3rd rounds? I know the top of the draft had a fall off, but I thought there was decent depth in that group of late first through end of the second round in terms of options for potential middle 6 guys. The kinds of players you want on the 3rd or 4th lines or 2nd or 3rd pairings of a contender.
Josh do you think M-E Vlasic gets another contract? He was great in his prime, but the stats in the article about him getting waived were brutal.
I was hearing teams could be interested in Reichel. Any thoughts on that or what team(s) make the most sense? I think this is one those “change of scenery”‘type situations.
It looks like if you’re any shorter than 6’3 you aren’t on the Flyers draft board this year
Hawks too.
Flyers made my comment outdated drafting a 6’1 power forward right after.
Flyers are building a football team! Love it!
While some teams are playing 1-3-1 or box and one the Flyers will be playing a switching defense like basketball lol
Broad Street Bullies are back!
Hawks-Flyers could be an MMA match.
What’s wrong with the Schmidt kid? Josh had him in the first round. Massive free fall. Maybe Hawks should trade back in. Hawks have 4 seconds next year and Florida’s first which is basically a second rounder.
So far in the second round it seems like a lot of safe middle to bottom 6 kind of guys like the equivalent of drafting good offensive guards in football
Flyers drafted a Gard, lol!
Hawks have done pretty well drafting guys who fell into the second round. Shaw and Debrincat pop into mind.
Capitals are quietly having a great draft. Great value from where they’re drafting from.
Threthewey is a good value pick in the 3rd round for the Penguins.
Dallas getting Cameron Schmidt in the 3rd round is a steal.
He’s 5’7 see if he can even make the nhl lol
How tall is Logan Stankoven?
Roy and Hauge, and what else for Marner?
BRUNOOOOO — Senators just got the pick of the draft!!
Has day two of a draft ever taken this long?
OH MY GOD HOW DID I CALL HAOXI WANG TO THE SHARKS?
SCROLL UP IN THE THREAD, I PREDICTED HIM AT 30 LAST NIGHT. HE WENT AT 33.
INSANE.
I like the 159th Anaheim pick Emile Guite I really think that this kid will be heard from in the years to come.
