Slater Koekkoek Recalled By Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning are pulling out all the stops to try and squeak into the playoffs, and today they recalled Slater Koekkoek from the AHL to help them get there. The 23-year old has split the season between the Lightning and the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. As Bryan Burns of NHL.com reports, Koekkoek is likely the replacement for Jason Garrison, who was injured last night against the Boston Bruins.

The former 10th-overall pick has yet to make his presence truly felt at the NHL level, struggling to find ice time with the Lightning this season even when he did play. In 29 games, he averaged just under 13 minutes a night, including playing less than ten minutes on several occasions. Though he has generally fared well in the AHL since dominating for the Windsor Spitfires in 2013-14, his play has been somewhat disappointing at the highest level. Should he enter the lineup for Garrison, perhaps this time he’ll be allowed to stretch his legs a little bit and show what he can do in a playoff race.

After a win last night, the Lightning find themselves just three points out of a playoff spot with a game in hand on the Bruins. While they’ll have to fight off the Islanders and Hurricanes—who are on an unbelievable 6-0-3 run to vault them back into the picture—it is not inconceivable for the Lightning to make it in. If they do, Koekkoek could be a pretty nice insurance plan for a team that has faced injury concerns all season long. It’s unclear how long Garrison will be out (if at all), but for now pencil in Koekkoek for their game tonight against the Red Wings.

Washington Capitals Recall Paul Carey From Hershey

The Washington Capitals have brought Paul Carey up from the AHL to help them on their upcoming road trip. After facing the Arizona Coyotes tomorrow night, the Caps will go on a five-game road trip lasting more than a week. Carey will act as insurance throughout.

Carey last played for the team three weeks ago when Andre Burakovsky was still injured. The 28-year old forward has played four games at the NHL level this season, registering no points. He has however dominated the minor league level once again, with 55 points in 55 games. Had he not spent so much time up with the big club this season, he’d surely be the Hershey Bears’ leading scorer—he trails by only one point with eleven fewer games.

An AHL veteran since graduating from Boston College in 2012, Carey doesn’t project to be a big part of any NHL lineup during his career. He does however provide some some speed and skill that can be inserted in an emergency situation, and can style his play for what role he’s given.

The Capitals are still in first place after securing a victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the shootout last night. With just nine games to play, the race for the President’s Trophy and the right to face a wildcard team is still very much alive.

NHL Announces Regular Season Games To Be Held In Sweden

The NHL is headed to Europe once again. The league announced early Friday morning that the Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche will play two regular season games next season in Stockholm, Sweden on November 10th and 11th. The games are the first announced matches in the new 2017 SAP NHL Global Series, which will include preseason games in China according to John Shannon of Sportsnet. Those games will be announced on March 30th at an event in Beijing.

This isn’t the first time the NHL has played regular season games in Sweden, but it has been many years. 2011 was the final year of the NHL Premiere Series, a tradition of starting the regular season with games across Europe. In that last example the New York Rangers took on the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks in back to back games in Stockholm, led of course by the Swedish netminding of Henrik Lundqvist. Gabriel Landeskog

This time, the two teams heading to Europe are both captained by Swedish-born NHLers. Erik Karlsson and Gabriel Landeskog told NHL.com it is quite a rare experience and they’re both looking forward to it. From Karlsson:

Who thought they would have been able to play NHL games in your hometown. It’ll be surreal to do that. Stockholm is such a great hockey town and a great city overall. I’ll be really excited to show the boys around and show the team staff around the city.

In Colorado, the announcement of these games does come at an awkward time. With GM Joe Sakic publicly shopping captain Gabriel Landeskog at the trade deadline, and likely looking to move him this summer to start his rebuild, there is now likely pressure to wait at least through November. Landeskog was born and raised in Stockholm, and was surely the reason for the NHL choosing Colorado to participate, just as Karlsson was for Ottawa.

The announcement comes as the league continues its battle over whether to allow players to play in the upcoming Olympic Games in South Korea. As they try to grow their brand globally, the league seems to want to control the circumstances in which it sends its players, instead of participating in a tournament completely out of their control. Commissioner Gary Bettman has been as clear as ever recently, saying “assume we’re not going” when asked about the Olympic negotiations.

Oilers Notes: Hart Trophy, Lander, Hall

The Edmonton Oilers may have lost a big game to their division rivals in Anaheim last night, but it was a big night for their captain, Connor McDavid.

McDavid scored a goal and three points to increase his lead at the top of the scoring race. He now has 85 points in 73 games, which is four points more than Sidney Crosby has, albeit in 66 games. Brad Marchand and Patrick Kane each have 80 points in 73 games.

While he’s leading the scoring race, a bigger question is where he’s at in the MVP race. While Cam Talbot has been superb for the Oilers this season, there’s no question that McDavid is the main reason for the team’s rise up the standings. The Oilers surpassed last season’s win total in mid-February, and have improved their goal differential by 63 goals. They finished in 29th last season, and are currently sitting in a divisional playoff spot this season. The biggest difference between this year and last? McDavid is healthy and arguably tied with Crosby for the title of best player in the NHL. Winning the scoring race would clear things up; in the past five years, the Hart has gone to either the Art Ross or Rocket Richard winner four times.

If McDavid does end up winning the Hart Trophy for league MVP, he will be the first Oilers player to win a major award since Andrew Ference won the King Clancy Award for off-ice leadership in 2013-14. McDavid would be the first Oiler to win an award for on-ice play since 1989-90 when Mark Messier and Bill Ranford took home the Hart, Lindsay, and Conn Smythe.

  • Oilers minor-league centre Anton Lander has signed with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL for next season, according to KHL insider Aivis Kalniņš. A former second-round, Lander has struggled at the NHL level with just 35 points in 215 games. His only sustained success was back in 2014-15, when he scored 20 points in 38 games. But in the AHL, Lander is dominant. He has 22 goals and 46 points in 31 games this season for the Bakersfield Condors. The deal will be announced after the AHL season ends, and will make Lander one of the highest-paid imports in the KHL according to Kalniņš. Back in October, we reported on the top KHL salaries, and the highest-paid import on the list was Stephane Da Costa who makes approximately $1.3MM USD. That range would be a nice raise over Lander’s current contract which pays him $990K. It seems unlikely that the Oilers will tender Lander a qualifying offer in the spring.
  • Taylor Hall may not be in Edmonton anymore, but he can’t escape the questions about his former team. Hall was asked today if he would watch and cheer for the Oilers in the playoffs. His answer? “No.” After six bottom-ten finishes with the Oilers, Hall once again finds himself at the bottom of the standings with the Devils while his former team is going to make the playoffs. Sportsnet’s Luke Fox quoted Hall as saying the situation has “a weird dynamic. You’re happy for your friends, that they’re doing well and they’re going to experience the playoffs, but you can’t help but be a bit jealous.”

Evening Snapshots: Olympics, Ducks, Ristolainen

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President Rene Fasal publicly stated today that the NHL has until the end of April to decide whether NHL players will play in the 2018 Winter Olympics, reports The Associated Press. NHL participation in the upcoming games has been a point of contention this year. Most recently, Steve Keating of Reuters reported that Gary Bettman stated that everyone “should assume the players are not going.” Whether or not Fasal’s deadline is a hard deadline or a soft one, Olympic participation may dominate hockey conversation when the League wants the attention focused on its first round playoffs.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have reassigned forward Ondrej Kase to the AHL San Diego Gulls, reports Eric Stephens of the OC Register. The move comes as little surprise since Kase was scratched three times in the last four games, and failed to break the eight-minute mark in his last two appearances. In 51 games for the Ducks Kase scored 5G and 9A. In Kase’s nine games with the Gulls earlier this season he scored 3G and 4A, and a similar production streak could have him back up the NHL before the playoffs.
  • The NHL Department of Player Safety released its video explanation regarding its decision to suspend Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Ristolainen received a three game suspension for interference after hitting Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel. The League’s decision was based on two points: (1) Guentzel did not touch the puck before being hit, and (2) the onus was on Ristolainen to alter course after the pass to Guentzel was tipped. The league did not accept Ristolainen’s defense that because he was skating backwards into the hit, he could not move in time. The league retorted that it was Ristolainen’s choice to lead into a hit that way, and he has to take responsibility for the consequences.

Snapshots: Brodzinski, Rod, Ronning

As expected yesterday, the Los Angeles Kings have recalled Jonny Brodzinski today from the Ontario Reign to give him a taste of NHL action down the stretch. The minor-league sniper will not play tonight, but is expected to get into the lineup at some point over the remaining ten games. Armed with a howitzer of a shot, Brodzinski is an option for the Kings next season, as he’s proven everything he needs to at the AHL level.

With the Kings needing scoring wherever they can find it—they currently rank 27th in the league in goals for—Brodzinski may actually get a chance to move up in the lineup quickly. If he can show an ability to replicate his goal-scoring touch at the highest level, he’d instantly become one of their best options. Jeff Carter and Tanner Pearson alone have accounted for more than 30% of the Kings’ goals this season, with no other player even eclipsing 15 on the season. Brodzinski would be a welcome addition if he can find enough open space to release that shot.

  • The San Jose Sharks are closing in on a contract with second-round pick Noah Rod, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN. The 2014 draft pick has continued to play in the NLA (Switzerland) for the past three seasons and may be ready to come across the pond. Known for his feisty game and ability to get under opponent’s skin, Rod showed an increased offensive game this year scoring 14 points in 27 games despite dealing with multiple injuries. He is likely still at least a year away from making a real impact in the NHL, but getting him over and into the AHL would help his transition to the North American game.
  • After signing NCAA goaltender Chris Nell earlier today, the New York Rangers—or rather their AHL affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack—have signed Ty Ronning to an amateur tryout. The seventh-round pick last summer just finished his season with the Vancouver Giants of the WHL, leading the team in scoring for the second straight season. At 5’9″ 170-lbs, Ronning is undersized to say the least, but has a role model on how to succeed at that size pretty close to home. Cliff Ronning, Ty’s dad, played 1137 games in the NHL and recorded 869 points despite actually coming in an inch shorter than his son is now. One of the all-time “small guys”, Cliff was exceptionally talented and even scored 85 points one season while skating for Vancouver with greats like Pavel Bure and Trevor Linden. Perhaps the younger Ronning was overlooked just as his father was in his day—Cliff went in the seventh-round too, but scored more than all but five of his draft class.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Tanner Kero To Two-Year Extension

The Chicago Blackhawks have decided Tanner Kero has done enough to stick around, as they have signed him to a two-year extension that will run through 2018-19. The 24-year old was set to become a restricted free agent this summer, and would have been eligible for salary arbitration. The financials of the extension haven’t been released, though Chicago will likely get him at a reasonable price given his production this season. "<strong

A former Michigan Tech Huskies standout, Kero scored 46 points as a senior before signing with the Blackhawks in 2015. Since then he’s made an impact in the AHL level with 64 points in 94 games and established himself enough to earn a full-time role on the NHL team. Usually centering the third line between Ryan Hartman and whoever happens to not be playing with Jonathan Toews at the time, Kero has 12 points in 38 games this season. With over 13 minutes a night he has been a legitimate part of the Blackhawks Western Conference-leading season, if not an offensive force.

There is still upside in Kero, who doesn’t necessarily need to be deployed as a defensive center. His playmaking ability is actually quite good, and will likely reward the Blackhawks with another relatively cheap middle-six option for the next few years. Chicago has been excellent at taking players from the college ranks and using them almost right away to insulate their core forwards, like they have most recently with John Hayden and Nick Schmaltz. While those two were previous draft picks of the team, Kero cost them nothing but money when he graduated from Michigan Tech. He’s an example of one of the only ways to sustain a contending run like the Blackhawks have for the past decade.

The Hawks now have just a handful of restricted free agents to sign this summer, which is a good thing because of their cap situation. After the signing of Kero the team will have between $5-7MM to work with depending on what the final salary cap number is, with a back up goaltender and at least one defenseman still to bring in after the RFAs. They could go to their system and install Jeff Glass and Ville Pokka into the NHL team full-time, but that would seem to be a step backwards on both fronts. Richard Panik remains their most important RFA after finding excellent chemistry with Jonathan Toews this season for a 20-goal campaign. The 25-year old might be the next victim of the Chicago cap crunch, with players like Schmaltz and Hartman looking ready to step into a bigger role.

Rasmus Ristolainen Suspended Three Games For Interference

The Department of Player Safety has suspended their second player of the day, handing down a three-game ban to Buffalo Sabres’ defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. It’s the first time the league has suspended Ristolainen in his four years in the NHL, and thus seems a bit excessive.

Ristolainen lined up Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel as the Penguin forward was heading out of his own zone and ready to receive a pass. As Sidney Crosby tried to send him the puck, Zemgus Girgensons picked it off inside the blueline and Ristolainen hit Guentzel anyway with his head down. The Pittsburgh forward was bloodied and suffered a concussion on the play, while Ristolainen was thrown out of the game just a few minutes in.

While it was clearly interference and therefor an illegal check, a three-game suspension seems high mostly because of the two-game ban given out to Brandon Manning earlier this year. In that play—coincidentally also against Guentzel—Manning threw a check long after the puck had been sent forward and even had “substantial head contact”.

The DoPS says that it will release a video explaining the Ristolainen outcome later today, which will likely claim that it would have been a dangerous hit whether Guentzel received the pass or not.

Injury Notes: Ferland, Stone, Leivo, Rust

Calgary Flames winger Micheal Ferland has rejoined his teammates in Nashville today after being quarantined for almost a week. The 24-year old had showed signs of the mumps outbreak that had swept through the NHL briefly, but is now symptom free. He’ll be back in on the top line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan tonight, according to Kristen Odland of Postmedia.

Here are some other injury notes from around the league:

  • Josh Leivo will take the spot of the injured Eric Fehr in tonight’s Maple Leafs lineup according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet. With Nikita Soshnikov still on the mend following a big hit from Zdeno Chara, Leivo will look to get back to his scoring ways tonight. The young winger had nine points in a ten game stretch last month when Mitch Marner was dealing with an injury, and has considerable offensive upside. He’ll slot in on the fourth line tonight beside Brian Boyle and Matt Martin.
  • Despite skating with the team in a regular jersey this morning, Cedric Paquette will not return to the lineup for Tampa Bay according to Caley Chelios of FOX Sports. The Lightning center will remain out alongside Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson for the time being.
  • On Stamkos, he was seen skating again before practice, but admitted to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times that “time is running out” for him to return this season. Stamkos has been skating for weeks as he tries to come back from a meniscus tear in his right knee. The Lightning are currently sitting five points back with ten games to play.
  • Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports that Ottawa Senators forward Mark Stone was back skating this morning, though he won’t play tonight. Stone was out early and stayed late at practice as he works hard to get back into the Senators lineup. The team can smell first place in the Atlantic Division, and getting Stone—arguably their best forward—back before the end of the season could help them wrestle the crown away from the Montreal Canadiens. With a matchup against the fourth Metropolitan team looming in the first round, whether they should really want it is a different story.
  • Penguins’ forward Bryan Rust is almost back in the lineup reports Bill West of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review after taking part in just about everything at today’s Pittsburgh practice. Though he won’t play tonight, the 24-year old forward will likely be back in a game before the end of the week; the Penguins take on Ottawa tonight, New York (Islanders) tomorrow and Philadelphia on Sunday.
  • Three goaltenders were at practice today for the Anaheim Ducks, including John Gibson as he continues to rehab his latest injury. Head coach Randy Carlyle said today that Gibson will definitely play before the end of the regular season, though that still leaves the question of whether he’ll be tested enough to start game one of the playoffs. We’ll see how many games the young netminder gets in before Anaheim has to take on a team like the Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames in the first round.
