Jason Spezza Injured, No Timeline For Return

The injury bug has run rampant in Dallas this season, and now another top-six forward has been claimed. According to head coach Lindy Ruff, Jason Spezza is set to miss significant time due to an injury sustained last night. Spezza was the recipient of a big open-ice hit from the Winnipeg Jets’ Adam Lowry in the contest. Spezza took the shot in the right shoulder and then twisted, landing hard on his left hip and elbow. Likely trying to avoid frightening fans with yet another nightmare diagnosis, the Stars have not identified what Spezza’s injury is, nor what the timeline for his return might be. Ruff indicated that it would be “probably more than days”, but that seems likely to be an understatement.

Spezza has already missed some time due to injury earlier this season, when he was out for a few games with a lower-body issue. Stars beat writer Mark Stepenski doesn’t think that will have an effect though, as he reports that it is an upper-body injury this time around. However, he also states that Ruff believes the injury could keep Spezza out for a week or two or even longer, the uncertainty of which should remind fans of Spezza’s long history with back problems. While Spezza could have just as easily have injured his right shoulder or left elbow on the fall, the twisting motion with which he took the check and hit the ice could have re-aggravated his long-time back condition.  The scoring center has dealt with lingering issues throughout his career, which came to head in 2012-13 when he played in only 5 games with the Ottawa Senators, missing the rest of the season due to back surgery.

Spezza’s absence from the Dallas lineup will substantially hinder their attempts to get back into the playoff picture. The team has already been without Mattias Janmark for the entire season and will not get him back this year. Similarly, Ales Hemsky has missed all but one game in 2016-17 as well and there is little hope of a return. The Stars are also without defensemen Johnny Oduya, who missed ten games earlier in the year as well as the past six, and Jamie Oleksiak, who has now missed ten straight. Overall, Dallas has had disproportionate injury struggles this season, having lost the fourth-most man-minutes to injury halfway through the season, and are only adding to that total in the second half. Luckily, Patrick Sharp, Jiri Hudler, and Cody Eakin, all of whom have missed significant time this season, are back and healthy and will be able to help pick up the slack if Spezza does end being out for an extended period. However, it just doesn’t seem like this is the Stars’ year, as they faced an uphill battle  to make the playoffs even with Spezza, as they sit three points behind the St. Louis Blues for the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference, with the Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, and Vancouver Canucks all blocking their path to the postseason. That task now seems daunting with arguably their third-best player out of the lineup and no timeline for his return.

Ribeiro, Marchenko On Waivers; Three Players Clear

The Nashville Predators have placed center Mike Ribeiro on waivers, according to Adam Vingan of The Tennessean.

We reported earlier this morning that Ribeiro may have asked for a trade out of Nashville. He was a healthy scratch for the Predators past three games and five of their past 11. Ribeiro has four goals and 25 points in 46 games so far this season. This is his third year in Nashville, but the first year he’s struggled to produce. Ribeiro had 62 and 50 points in his first two seasons in Nashville. The first sign of trouble was likely in the playoffs last season, when he was a healthy scratch twice while posting just two assists in 12 games. Vingan writes that Ribeiro is the most sheltered player in the NHL this season, starting more than half his shifts in the offensive zone. When Vingan asked coach Peter Laviolette about Ribeiro, all he said was “he’s a member of our team.” That’s not exactly a vote of confidence.

In addition, the Detroit Red Wings have placed Alexey Marchenko on waivers, per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. Marchenko has six assists in 30 games with the Red Wings this season. He also represented Russia at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. The right-handed Marchenko is on waivers to make room for defenseman Brendan Smith, who will be activated off IR tomorrow, according to Ansar Khan of MLive.com.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Devils tough guy Luke Gazdic, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Eric Gelinas, and the Buffalo Sabres center Cal O’Reilly all cleared waivers.

Gazdic signed with the Devils as a free agent back in July. He had spent the previous few seasons in Edmonton, and actually lived with superstar Taylor Hall, who was traded to New Jersey just days before Gazdic signed a one-year, two-way contract worth $700K. He has no points and 12 PIM in 10 games with the Devils so far. He has two assists in 13 AHL games this season. He’s already cleared waivers once this season.

Gelinas, a former Devil, was traded to Colorado for a third round pick at last year’s trade deadline. He has a single assist in 26 games. His $1.575MM contract is likely why he cleared waivers. Should he be assigned to the AHL, he’ll account for $625K on the Avalanche’s salary cap. Gelinas’ roster spot will likely go to Mark Barberio, who was claimed off waivers from Montreal on Thursday.

O’Reilly is the older brother of Sabres’ star Ryan O’Reilly. He has one assist in 11 games, but is much better at the AHL level. He has 34 points (8-26-34) in 36 games. ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reported Buffalo is looking for an upgrade at the fourth line center position (which O’Reilly had been occupying) via the trade market.

Trade Deadline Notes: Shattenkirk, Fleury, Ribeiro

The St. Louis Blues are willing to trade Kevin Shattenkirk. They’re even willing to sign him for eight years and then trade him, to facilitate another team acquiring the offensive defenseman.

Unfortunately for the Blues, no teams have shown interest in a sign and trade. ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that fear of a flat-cap has lead to any inquiring teams to ask about Shattenkirk as a pure rental. So many teams are already tight to the salary cap, LeBrun writes, that signing Shattenkirk to $7MM annually would be too big of a commitment before the exact cap is known. While he will still get big money should he make it to free agency, that would be in July once teams know “the exact salary-cap figure they’re dealing with before splurging on him.”

LeBrun believes that the Rangers and Bruins have already reached out to the Blues, and that spending assets to acquire a rental like Shattenkirk isn’t in the cards for building teams like the Oilers and Maple Leafs. Blues GM Doug Armstrong will be patient until the trade offers improve before making a decision.

  • Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is on the record as saying having two legitimate starting goaltenders in Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury “doesn’t work ideally.” Despite this, Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Tribune’s Jonathan Bombulie that his “preference is to keep both these goalies here this year.” While it’s understandable to want goaltending depth (they used three goaltenders in last year’s playoffs), the 32-year-old Fleury is clearly the backup now. Rutherford said he will listen to Fleury, and if the veteran wants to be moved now as opposed to the summer, then the GM will do whatever he can to do the right thing for the Penguins’ all-time winningest goaltender. It’ll be interesting to see how the Penguins handle the situation; more than two-thirds of the NHL doesn’t have the cap space to take on Fleury without sending salary back. Cap restraints are one of the biggest reasons we have yet to see any big moves this season.
  • Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman appeared on Sportsnet 960 in Calgary on Friday morning, and discussed a possible trade request out of Nashville. Chris Nichols of FanRagSports quoted Friedman as saying Mike Ribeiro may have asked for a trade from the Predators. Friedman couldn’t say for sure, but did say it wouldn’t surprise him because Ribeiro isn’t in the lineup every night nor is he playing a marquee role. Ribeiro has four goals and 25 points in 46 games so far this season. He had 62 and 50 points in his first two seasons in Nashville.

Panthers Activate Barkov And Huberdeau

After a trying first half, the Panthers are finally getting some claws.

Florida has activated Sasha Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau from Injured Reserve. Both men are expected to return to the lineup for tonight’s game versus Anaheim, according to TSN.

Barkov has been out of the lineup since the end of December with a back injury. In 36 games played, he has nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points. His return will be a big boost for the Panthers. While he was out of action, Vincent Trocheck filled in admirably as the top-line center, leading the Panthers in scoring, but below him either left winger Jussi Jokinen filled in or injury-plagued Nick Bjugstad moved up. Jokinen has 13 points in 41 games while Bjugstad has just one goal and three points in 23 games this season. Barkov is in the first year of a six-year, $35.4MM contract.

Menawhile, Friday’s game versus Anaheim will be the season debut for Huberdeau. He suffered an achilles injury in a pre-season game (Twitter link via @myregularface). Huberdeau was part of a very successful first line last season, alongside Barkov and the legendary Jaromir Jagr. Huberdeau set career highs with 20 goals and 59 points as the Panthers finished first in the Atlantic Division. In his absence, Jon Marchessault and Jokinen filled in.

Despite missing two-thirds of their top line for much of the year and the turmoil surrounding their front office, Florida sits just four points back of Philadelphia for the final wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. The 22-19-10 Panthers have a game in hand on the Flyers, and will need Barkov and Huberdeau to make hay as they try to get back in the playoff race.

Trade Deadline Updates: Hanzal and Duchene

The hot stove is on fire as trade deadline rumors heat up. With less than a month to go, the big names on the board are the subject of increased speculation. Today brings new information on two of the biggest names expected to move this season.

Martin Hanzal
ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reported on TSN’s Insider Trading that the Arizona Coyotes received serious calls from ten teams inquiring about Martin Hanzal. PHR highlighted Hanzal’s appeal earlier this week, and LeBrun’s report only corroborate’s Hanzal’s popularity. Lebrun’s ESPN colleague Craig Custance (insider access) reported earlier today that the Coyotes fielded interest from up to twelve teams, which means almost half the league is chasing the pending unrestricted free agent.

The interest is entirely warranted. Hanzal has a low $3.1MM cap hit, and while his point totals won’t get him top-line duty, he provides excellent depth and insurance for teams looking to make a deep run. With the salary cap making it harder and harder to construct a deep team, adding someone like Hanzal at the deadline is a short-term workaround.

Matt Duchene
It wasn’t too long ago that Matt Duchene was anointed the future leader of the Colorado Avalanche. And yet in 2017 Duchene finds himself embroiled in rampant trade rumors. TSN’s Bob McKenzie stated that the Avalanche established a high asking price somewhere in the range of three or four high-end pieces. The Avalanche are looking for an established player, a top prospect, and a 1st round draft pick—but would settle for two almost-established players for the first piece.

There is no doubt that the ask is high, implying that Duchene may not be moved until the offseason. It will be hard for GM Joe Sakic to significantly decrease his original ask lest he lose bargaining power in subsequent trades. Moreover, while the Avs could use a reboot, they may be better off keeping Duchene if his return doesn’t significantly help the team in the long run.

 

Snapshots: Hanzal, Olympics, Blackhawks, Cullen

As many as 12 teams are interested in acquiring Coyotes center Martin Hanzal, ESPN’s Craig Custance reports (Insider required).  Among those teams are Minnesota and San Jose, who Custance argues should be aggressive on the trade market over the next month given how wide open the Western Conference appears to be right now.

Hanzal’s situation has been well documented.  He’s a pending unrestricted free agent with a cap hit of just $3.1MM, making him an affordable option for most teams.  At 6’6, he can match up physically with any center in the league and he’s one of the better players league-wide at the faceoff dot, winning over 55% of his draws.

Accordingly, the asking price for him is quite high despite having a down year offensively with just 19 points (10-9-19) in 41 games.  GM John Chayka continues to seek a first round pick plus a quality prospect, a price that teams have deemed to be too steep so far.

Other notes from around the hockey world:

  • The NHL and NHLPA will be meeting with representatives from the IOC and the IIHF regarding potential participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics tomorrow, Sportsnet’s John Shannon notes (Twitter link). Commissioner Gary Bettman has been adamant that the position of the majority of the owners do not want to stop the season next year to go to South Korea but no final decision has been made.  IIHF President Rene Fasel has secured the funding to cover the travel costs and insurance for the participating players if they do go after the IOC decided it would no longer pay those costs.
  • Although the Blackhawks have been active on the trade market leading up to the deadline in past seasons, GM Stan Bowman told CSN Chicago’s Tracey Myers that he doesn’t expect to make a deal this year. He noted that he’s quite happy with the progression of several young players and is hoping they’ll continue to improve down the stretch.  It’s worth noting that Chicago is hosting the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and they would like to hold onto as many picks as possible and currently are projected to have just under $1.8MM in cap space at the deadline, per CapFriendly which will limit who they’re able to go after.
  • Penguins center Matt Cullen is expected to get the first chance to fill in for the injured Conor Sheary on Sidney Crosby’s left wing, notes Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Head coach Mike Sullivan suggests that Cullen’s defensive ability will be able to ease some of the responsibility off of Crosby.  With 17 points in 43 games as predominantly a bottom six forward, Cullen should be able to pick up some of the offensive void left by Sheary (who has 35 points in 42 games) as well.

Jonathan Quick Injury Update

Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick gets closer and closer to a return, reports LA Kings insider Jon Rosen. Quick took to the ice in full gear this morning for the first time since injuring his groin midway through the season opener. He’s spent the last four months recovering off-ice, respecting the injury and wary of progressing too fast. Kings GM Dean Lombardi has gone back and forth on a planned return date, at times stating early March or mid-February. Having Quick on ice in full equipment by February 1st is right on schedule, at least according to Kings coach Darryl Sutter.

Quick’s injury initially spelled doom for the Kings as the organization had no viable backup ready to take the reins. They had signed former Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff—who was relegated in Pittsburgh to a third-string role after Matt Murray’s surprise success—but his play quickly indicated that he was not ready for the starting role.

Luckily for the Kings however, veteran Peter Budaj stepped up and manned the crease admirably. Budaj is putting up the best numbers of his career this season. In 44 games Budaj is 24-14-3 with a .922 SV% , a 2.01 GAA, and 6 shutouts. Not bad for a goaltender on the brink of retirement. Budaj’s performance has kept the Kings in playoff contention, and Quick’s return could solidify its ticket down the stretch.

Budaj’s strong performance also allowed Quick to rehabilitate properly and not rush back to action too soon. Groin injuries are incredibly tricky for goaltenders as they rely heavily on lateral side to side movement. Ensuring that Quick is 100% before starting him significantly reduces the chances of him relapsing.

 

PHR Mailbag: Blashill, Trade Deadline, Savard

Over the last few days, we’ve taken your mailbag questions on Twitter using the hashtag #PHRMailbag and on the site via the comments feature. Here are the inquiries for this edition of the mailbag:

@JimRouleau39: When will the Red Wings make a move on Jeff Blashill? The team seems to have no energy! And continue to beat themselves.

This season has been nothing short of a disaster so far for Detroit.  They sit dead last in the Eastern Conference and their quarter-century playoff streak is in serious jeopardy.  Despite that, I don’t suspect Blashill’s job is in jeopardy any time soon.

GM Ken Holland is quite patient and Blashill was long heralded as Mike Babcock’s successor even while he was still behind the bench for the Red Wings.  At that time, they were hesitant to grant interviews for Blashill to interview for other NHL head coaching jobs, something that doesn’t typically happen.  Blashill has been Holland’s guy for a long time now and it’s hard to see one season, as bad as it has been, cause him to change his mind.

Detroit has been hit hard by injuries this year while goalie Petr Mrazek hasn’t played anywhere near the level that he is capable of.  These are also factors that suggest that Blashill will get another opportunity next season with what may be a bit of a different looking roster.

Jay: In general would you expect less trades this deadline because of the expansion draft or will that not really have a huge impact.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see a quieter deadline this year because of the dearth of sellers and a lot of teams being capped out.  I don’t expect the expansion draft to be at the forefront at the deadline though except for the sellers who can try to plan ahead a little bit.  For the teams that are looking to contend, their focus is going to be adding the right piece(s) to help them win now and worry about sorting out their protected list later.  Most of the deadline deals are likely to be rental players anyways and it’s unlikely that those pending unrestricted free agents will be considered for protection.

For teams like Arizona, Colorado, and whoever else becomes a sure fire seller over the next month, they can determine what their list is likely to look like in June and who is most likely to be selected by the Golden Knights.  From there, they could see if a buyer would have interest in making a move for that player but beyond that, I suspect the bulk of the expansion-related deals will come after the trade deadline.

@Grade5Woolgar: Where and how is Marc Savard? Post concussion and no news since. Is he ok?

Savard is living in Peterborough, ON and is staying involved in hockey as, like many retired players, he is coaching his son at the minor hockey level.  He also has taken up golf and has qualified for a couple of tournaments on a lower professional golf circuit although his physical limitations have made it difficult for him to play a full four rounds.  He’s also dealing with some memory loss as well given all of the concussions he has dealt with, the last one coming back in 2010-11 when he last played.

This is the final year that Savard will be on the books of an NHL team as the Devils acquired him from Florida as a salary cap dump last offseason.  Once his contract expires, he will likely officially file his retirement papers.

Minor Transactions: 2/2/17

Here is where we’ll keep track of today’s minor roster moves:

  • The Capitals announced that they’ve assigned center Chandler Stephenson back to Hershey of the AHL. Stephenson got into a trio of games with the Caps over the past week and a half, being held pointless while averaging 8:45 per night.  He has spent the bulk of the year at the AHL level, recording six goals and 18 assists in 41 games with the Bears.
  • With goalie Antti Raanta taking a leave of absence to be with his wife gave birth to their first child earlier today, the Rangers announced that they have summoned Magnus Hellberg from AHL Hartford. The 25 year old netminder has played in 26 games with the Wolf Pack, going 10-9-5 with a 2.86 GAA and a .906 SV%.
  • The Wild announced that they have recalled 2014 first round pick right winger Alex Tuch from Iowa of the AHL. Tuch is in his first professional season and has 11 goals and 11 assists in 34 games at the minor league level this season and has yet to play at the NHL level.  He also was named to the AHL All-Star game which took place late last month.
  • Anaheim has recalled defenseman Shea Theodore from San Diego (AHL), reports Eric Stephens (Twitter link). He has been back and forth plenty of times this season (this is recall number 12 for him) and has played in 25 games with the Ducks, scoring once while adding seven assists.  He has fared better offensively at the minor league level with nine points (1-8-9) in 13 contests with the Gulls.
  • Toronto has assigned center Frederik Gauthier back to the AHL’s Marlies, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston (Twitter link).  Taking his place on the roster is center Ben Smith who had been out since late December with a hand injury.  Gauthier has played in 18 games with the Maple Leafs this season, picking up two goals and an assist while winning just over 51% of his faceoffs.  At the minor league level, he has a goal and three helpers in 17 contests.
  • The Devils announced (via Twitter) that they have recalled forward Joseph Blandisi from AHL Albany.  Blandisi spent half the season in the NHL last year, picking up 17 points (5-12-17) in 41 games.  However, he has yet to see action with New Jersey this season.  However, he has been productive with the AHL Devils this year scoring seven goals to go along with 16 assists in just 28 games.
