Snapshots: Swayman, Bogosian, Irwin, Granlund

After having to go through an arbitration hearing to get a contract done with goaltender Jeremy Swayman last summer, it appears the Bruins are trying to avoid that this time around.  Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports in his latest 32 Thoughts column that they’ve started discussions on an extension with the netminder.  Swayman is playing on a $3.475MM award that basically split the submissions from last summer’s hearing and has a nearly identical save percentage this year (.919) as he did a year ago (.920) heading into tonight’s action.  With arbitration eligibility once again this summer, it’s quite possible that Swayman’s price tag pushes past the $5MM mark on a short-term deal and even higher if they could reach a long-term agreement.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • In his latest podcast (video link), Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic reports that the Wild are trying to sign defenseman Zach Bogosian to a contract extension. Minnesota acquired the 33-year-old from Tampa Bay early in the season and he has held his own on their third pairing, logging over 17 minutes a night while recording nine points and 80 hits in 43 games.  If they can’t get a deal done, however, Johnston reports that the Maple Leafs are among the teams that have checked in on Bogosian’s availability.  They’ve already added on the back end with the reacquisition of Ilya Lyubushkin but if they can’t add an impact blueliner, shoring up their depth – perhaps with another second-timer with the team – isn’t necessarily a bad fall-back plan.
  • One day after recalling him, the Canucks announced (Twitter link) that defenseman Matt Irwin was sent back to AHL Abbotsford. Aside from two short stints with Vancouver where he didn’t play, the 36-year-old has played exclusively in the minors where he has 10 points in 46 games so far.  Carson Soucy is believed to be nearing a return from his hand injury so this assignment could suggest that the blueliner is ready to suit up.
  • The Sharks are trying to be creative to make a Mikael Granlund trade work, reports TSN’s Pierre LeBrun in his latest piece for The Athletic (subscription link). The 32-year-old has had a bounce-back year playing a much bigger role in San Jose as he has 36 points in 47 while averaging nearly 21 minutes a night.  However, Granlund has another year left on his deal at $5MM, a price tag that would be difficult for several buyers to afford.  San Jose only has one salary retention slot left so they might prefer to take a pricey contract back over using that final slot on Granlund through next season.

Snapshots: Buchnevich, Bogosian, Rosen

The St. Louis Blues aren’t actively shopping winger Pavel Buchnevich but they are hearing out offers, shares team insider Jeremy Rutherford with The Athletic. Rutherford adds that any deal would likely start at a first-round draft pick and may even need two first-round picks to get done. That’s a steep price for an older veteran with just one year left on his contract but Buchnevich may earn it. He’s been one of St. Louis’ most productive players since joining them in 2021-22, totaling 186 points in 189 games with the club. That includes his 43 points in 53 games this season, a mark that ranks second on the Blues and puts Buchnevich on pace to break 65 points in his third season in a row.

Buchnevich became a pillar of the St. Louis offense quickly, scoring a career-high 76 points in 73 games during the 2021-22 season – a year that saw the Blues score their most goals in one season since 1981-82. He’s maintained that strength through the last two seasons, despite St. Louis’ scoring coming a bit slower, and even adapted to playing a top-line centerman role for parts of last season. His adaptability is evident, and that – as well as a chance to get a head start on contract negotiations – could be enough to convince playoff teams to pay a high premium at the Deadline.

  • The St. Louis Blues are expected to send down Calle Rosen to make room to activate Scott Perunovich off of injured reserve, per team reporter Matthew DeFranks. Perunovich is returning from a lower-body injury that’s held him out of the team’s last seven games. He will continue his search for his first goal of the season, and his NHL career, recording 12 assists through 31 games this season.
  • Minnesota Wild Defenseman Zach Bogosian is likely to miss at least a week of action after exiting the team’s Wednesday night game with an upper-body injury, per team reporter Michael Russo. Bogosian appears to have suffered the injury after blocking a shot from Nikolaj Ehlers, leaving the game after his shift. Bogosian has scored one goal and nine points in 44 games this season, serving a comfortable role in Minnesota’s top-four. His absence will likely lend way to Declan Chisholm or Jonathon Merrill gaining a larger role, though the Wild also have Alex Goligoski serving as a healthy scratch.

Jonas Brodin Returns To Lineup, Adam Beckman Reassigned

Sarah McLellan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin is set to return tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins after missing the past few games with an illness. The 30-year-old hasn’t played since before the All-Star break back on January 27th against the Anaheim Ducks and should slide into the lineup on the team’s second pairing alongside Zach Bogosian.

Brodin missed a few weeks back in December with an upper-body injury and has dressed in just 32 games this season. The native of Karlstad, Sweden has averaged almost 24 minutes of ice time per game when he has been healthy and has a goal and 12 assists this season, nearly matching last season’s offensive output in half the games.

Brodin’s return will likely push Alex Goligoski into the press box and has also led the Wild to reassign Adam Beckman to the AHL. Beckman was recalled earlier in the week and was healthy scratched on Wednesday night when the Wild took on the Chicago Blackhawks. Beckham was once viewed as a solid prospect for Minnesota, but it appears time could be ticking on his chance of playing in the NHL for the Wild. The 22-year-old has just a single assist in 12 career NHL games and in the AHL this season he has nine goals and 10 assists in 37 games.

Beckham has received four NHL recalls in his career but has been passed over on multiple occasions recently when the Wild have needed to recall a player from their AHL affiliate.

Jared Spurgeon Won’t Play Tonight, Out Day-To-Day

The Minnesota Wild have announced that defenseman Jared Spurgeon will miss tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames and will be out of the lineup day-to-day as he is banged up and dealing with a lower-body injury. The Wild captain was activated off the long-term injured reserve just over a month ago after he was originally injured in the pre-season. The 34-year-old has played in just 13 games this year and hasn’t been able to get going offensively as he has just four assists.

The Edmonton, Alberta native is no stranger to being out of the lineup having played just one full 82-game season since breaking into the league back in 2010. Spurgeon has always been undersized at just 5’9” and 166lbs, but despite being undersized and not overly flashy offensively, Spurgeon has remained an incredibly effective two-way defenseman. He continues to be matched up against the top players on opposing teams, and a lot of the Wild’s struggles this season can be attributed to how many games they’ve had to play without Spurgeon.

The Wild are already without the services of Jonas Brodin and could be in tough to replace two of their top defensemen. With Spurgeon, Brodin, and Zach Bogosian out, Minnesota will be looking for someone to step in and eat some of the minutes that have been vacated. That could mean a big bump in ice time for both Brock Faber and Jacob Middleton.

Minnesota sits seventh in the Central Division with a record of 10-12-4 and has been one of the more active teams in recent weeks as they’ve made a handful of trades and initiated a coaching change as well. Currently, the Wild sit four points of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with a pair of games in hand.

Afternoon Notes: Chytil, Rust, Bogosian

New York Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette shared that forward Filip Chytil is, “moving in the right direction” with his upper-body injury, adding that he thinks Chytil will return this season. The 24-year-old centerman is currently on long-term injured reserve, sitting out of action since November 3rd with an upper-body injury.

Chytil appeared in 10 games with the Rangers before going down with injury, recording six assists and four penalty minutes. He was averaging nearly 16 minutes of ice time each game through the early season, the highest average of his seven-year NHL career. Chytil scored a career-high 22 goals and 45 points in 74 games last season, after recording either 22 or 23 points in each of his four prior NHL seasons. The step forward in scoring brought Chytil’s career totals to 144 points in 337 games.

Chytil is one of many injured Rangers forwards, with the team also without Barclay Goodrow and Chris Kreider, who are both day-to-day with injury, and Kaapo Kakko, who is alongside Chytil on injured reserve.

Central Notes: Avalanche, Olausson, Bogosian, Heinola

After the team’s practice this morning, head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, Jared Bednar issued several roster updates before the team takes on the Anaheim Ducks tonight. Most notably, after missing Colorado’s last game, Bednar asserted that defenseman Cale Makar is doubtful to return tonight (X Link).

Aside from Makar being doubtful, Bednar also mentioned that forward Andrew Cogliano would not be in the lineup due to a lower-body injury, and although Valeri Nichushkin missed practice due to being sick, he is expected to play tonight. Although they will be missing several key players in their lineup, this is exactly the situation the Avalanche were hoping to weather as they spent the entire offseason with a primary goal of addressing the team’s depth.

Of all three, Makar is by far the most important player to be missing out of the lineup. Arguably the most important part of Colorado’s lineup, Makar continues to make his case for the best player in the entire league, as he has seven goals and 34 points in 23 games, while also maintaining some of the best defensive metrics among all defensemen.

Other notes:

  • Before Bednar had spoken to reports about the lineup tonight, the Avalanche announced they had recalled forward Oskar Olausson for tonight’s game. Colorado’s first-round selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, Olausson has yet to play for the Avalanche this season, after playing in one game last year. Playing for their AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, Olausson has five goals and eight points in 20 games, sitting seventh on the team in scoring.
  • Michael Russo of The Athletic is reporting that Minnesota Wild defenseman, Zach Bogosian, is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning to provide more defensive prowess into the lineup, Bogosian has one assist in nine games for the Wild, averaging just over 13 minutes of ice time per night.
  • Suffering an ankle injury during this year’s preseason, the rehab for Winnipeg Jets’ defenseman Ville Heinola was expected to be between two and three months. In an update on his progression, reports are confirming that Heinola has returned to skating, although he is still not skating in full equipment (X Link). The timeline should still be accurate to project his return, but it is nonetheless a positive that he has not experienced a setback in his recovery process.

Wild Recall Dakota Mermis, Reassign Vinni Lettieri

The Wild recalled defenseman Dakota Mermis from AHL Iowa today, per a team announcement. Minnesota sent forward Vinni Lettieri to Iowa in a corresponding move to remain under the Upper Limit of the salary cap.

Mermis, 29, has appeared in 20 games for the Wild since signing as a free agent in 2020, recording two goals and three assists in 15:30 of average ice time. After clearing waivers, the Wild recalled Mermis early this season as injuries struck their blueline, playing him in a career-high 13 contests. After notching his only five points as a member of the Wild and recording a -1 rating, the Wild placed Mermis on waivers again in November, shortly after the return of captain Jared Spurgeon from injury, officially assigning him to Iowa less than a week later.

He’s only appeared in four games for Iowa since his November demotion. The left-shot defender has one assist, a -1 rating and 12 penalty minutes after recording 26 points in 63 games for Iowa last season. While Spurgeon likely won’t miss any time after departing yesterday’s win over the Blackhawks with an apparent lower-body injury, recent trade acquisition Zach Bogosian is banged up and likely to miss time on their upcoming Pacific Division road trip with an upper-body injury. With Bogosian not headed for long-term injured reserve, the Wild only have sufficient cap space for one extra player – meaning they’ll carry 12 forwards and seven defensemen for the trip instead of 13 forwards and six defensemen.

This is Letteri’s second demotion of the season after clearing waivers last month. The 28-year-old had played in two out of three games since his subsequent call-up on November 28, sitting as a healthy scratch against the Blackhawks yesterday and playing a limited role when in the lineup. A point-per-game threat in the minors, Lettieri has averaged 10:43 through 13 NHL appearances this season with two goals and one assist. The Minnesota-born center has 96 NHL games under his belt, dating back to the 2017-18 season with the Rangers, and remains a high-end AHL talent in his prime.

The Wild did not need to expose Lettieri to waivers because he had been on the NHL roster for less than 30 days and played less than 10 games since he cleared last month.

Snapshots: Reichel, Bogosian, Samsonov

Chicago Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel will be a healthy scratch for today’s game, according to head coach Luke Richardson. Reichel will be in the press box even though Anthony Beauvillier will be unavailable for the game today as some of the logistics related to his trade from the Canucks are still to be sorted out.

After scoring 15 points in 23 games last season, there was some optimism that Reichel would have a breakout 2023-24 season next to phenom Connor Bedard. So far that hasn’t happened, though, as the 2020 17th overall pick has just two goals and six points this season.

Some notes from the rest of the NHL:

  • Veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian will not play in today’s Minnesota Wild game, as the blueliner is dealing with an upper-body injury. Bogosian was acquired by Wild to help shore up their defense and has thus far played in nine games for the Wild. With him out of the lineup, Jon Merrill will get the call for Minnesota.
  • Ilya Samsonov was absent from Toronto Maple Leafs practice today as he’s still dealing with an illness. Samsonov’s illness led to veteran Martin Jones being recalled on an emergency basis, and he backed up Joseph Woll for last night’s game against the Boston Bruins. Since the Maple Leafs next play Thursday, one would assume that Samsonov will be ready to play by then, although we obviously do not have official confirmation of that timeline.

Wild Acquire Zach Bogosian From Lightning

The Minnesota Wild have acquired defenseman Zach Bogosian from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, per a team release.

This is the team’s second trade involving a defenseman today after dealing the much younger Calen Addison to the San Jose Sharks for a 2026 fifth-round pick and depth forward Adam Raška. Overall, the Wild have spent an additional $25K against the cap, acquired a slightly higher-value draft pick, and taken on a low-ceiling prospect for swapping Addison for Bogosian on the NHL roster.

Bogosian, 33, is in the final season of a three-year deal signed with the Lightning in 2021 and costs $850K against the cap, although he’s set to earn $1.05MM in actual salary this season. The veteran shutdown defender and 2008 third-overall pick has a modified no-trade clause affording him a 21-team no-trade list, per CapFriendly, meaning the Wild were among Bogosian’s top ten desired destinations for a trade.

This is a nice change of scenery for Bogosian, who won the Stanley Cup with Tampa in 2020. He unexpectedly hit the waiver wire during preseason (and cleared) to offer the Lightning some salary cap flexibility, although he was recalled back to the NHL after the team’s opening night game against the Nashville Predators. Bogosian has played in four out of 13 games for the Lightning this season, averaging a career-low 11:57 per game and failing to get on the scoresheet.

The deal marks somewhat of a homecoming, as Bogosian lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area during the offseason, and his older brother, Aaron, works in the Wild’s front office, per Michael Russo of The Athletic. It’s undeniably a downgrade for the Wild, though, who take on a veteran with dwindling advanced metrics and subpar traditional defensive metrics over the past two seasons while losing out on a promising puck-moving blueliner.

On Tampa’s end, the deal should mean more opportunity for 25-year-old Nicklaus Perbix. He’s been a healthy scratch twice this season and has gotten off to a disappointing start, recording three assists in 11 games while posting some of the worst even-strength possession numbers on the team with a Corsi share of just 41.1%. Tampa will now rely on him to recapture his rookie season form that saw him post 20 points in 69 games while playing solid defensive hockey last season.

The Lightning also have Haydn Fleury and Philippe Myers stashed in the minors on the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch available for recall. Between them, they have nearly 400 games of NHL experience.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report Bogosian was coming to the Wild, while Michael Russo of The Athletic was the first to report the return.

Lightning Recall Zach Bogosian

The Tampa Bay Lightning recalled veteran defenseman Zach Bogosian from the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch today, according to CapFriendly. A spot opened up on the roster after forward Alex Barré-Boulet cleared waivers today, and he was assigned to Syracuse in a corresponding transaction.

Bogosian, 33, was waived just a few days ago as a casualty of the Lightning’s moves to capture the highest possible accruable cap space limit before placing netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy on in-season LTIR. After Barré-Boulet sat as a scratch for yesterday’s season-opening win against the Nashville Predators, Bogosian will now return to the team moving forward.

Recalling the 226-pound right-shot defender gives Tampa eight defensemen on the active roster alongside 13 forwards, although only 12 of them are healthy. Tyler Motte sustained an undisclosed injury in the third period yesterday, and assistant coach Jeff Blashill informed reporters today that Motte is listed as day-to-day. Blashill also mentioned the possibility of recalling Barré-Boulet or Gabriel Fortier if they need another healthy forward, but that would require returning Bogosian to Syracuse as they’re up against the 23-player roster limit. Bogosian has 30 days or 10 games played before he requires waivers again to head to the minors.

Bogosian is in the final season of a three-year, $2.55MM deal signed with Tampa in the summer of 2021. The deal’s paid off, as Bogosian has provided some solid veteran duties but now finds himself slipping out of an everyday role. He hasn’t eclipsed the 60-game mark since 2018-19 with the Buffalo Sabres. He recorded five points in 46 games last season, recording a -4 rating and logging 42 penalty minutes.
