Snapshots: Wild, Perets, Edvinsson, Rasmussen

The Minnesota Wild have assigned forwards Liam Ohgren and Michael Milne, and defender Daemon Hunt, to the AHL as they anticipate the return of Jonas Brodin and Joel Eriksson Ek. Michael Russo of The Athletic points out that, even with the two veterans returning, the team will likely call another forward up in the coming days.

Ohgren made his return to the lineup, and Milne his NHL debut, in Saturday’s loss to the Dallas Stars. Neither had much to show for their minutes, with Ohgren recording two shots in 12:10 and Milne recording three hits in 6:34. Another scoreless night pulled Ohgren through his eighth game this season with no points. Hunt hasn’t stepped into the lineup since being recalled on November 12th, though he did play one NHL game in October. All three have been far more productive with the AHL’s Iowa Wild – where Ohgren has four goals in four games; Hunt has two assists in six games; and Milne has eight points in 10 games. Ohgren and Milne will be the top options to be quickly recalled, though Minnesota could also turn towards veteran pros like Ben Jones, Travis Boyd, or Devin Shore.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The Carolina Hurricanes have sent goaltender Yaniv Perets back to the minor leagues with Pyotr Kochetkov set to return from injury per NHL.com’s Walt Ruff. Kochetkov missed Carolina’s Saturday win over Ottawa with an undisclosed injury. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour describing Kochetkov as “banged up” to postgame media including NHL.com’s Matt Komma was the closest indication of Kochetkov’s hold up. Whatever the issue was, the young netminder is set to reassume his familiar role as de facto starter with Frederik Andersen out long-term. Kochetkov has eight wins and a .897 save percentage through 10 games this season. Meanwhile, Perets has only served as backup in his NHL call-ups this season. He’s posted a .825 save percentage in three AHL games this year, and will return to a crowded Chicago Wolves goaltender room beside Spencer Martin and Ruslan Khazheyev.
  • Forward Michael Rasmussen (upper-body) and defenseman Simon Edvinsson (lower-body) are both expected to return to the lineup on Monday per the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James. Both players sat out of the team’s Saturday night loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Rasmussen has found a role in Detroit’s bottom-six, recording four points through 16 games this season. Edvinsson has proven far more impactful, usually serving as the go-to partner for star Wings defender Moritz Seider. Edvinsson has six points in 16 games this season, putting him on pace for 30 points in his rookie year.

West Notes: Wild, Avalanche, Canucks, Stezka

The Minnesota Wild have recalled forward Michael Milne to the NHL roster. The move comes after each of Jonas Brodin (lower-body), Marcus Johansson (illness), and Zach Bogosian (personal) missed the team’s Wednesday practice, per Michael Russo of The Athletic. Head coach John Hynes told Russo that Johansson and Bogosian are expected to play on Thursday, while Brodin is questionable.

Minnesota is already carrying seven defenders, with Declan Chisholm likely to step in if Brodin misses on Thursday. The team did not have an extra forward, though – requiring the call-up of Milne to cover Johansson’s potential absence. Chisholm has appeared in 10 games this season, recording three assists but yet to score his first goal of the year.

Meanwhile, Milne will rejoin the NHL roster just two days after being sent down. He received the first recall of his pro career last week, and was expected to make his NHL debut – but instead spent three games in the Wild press box. He likely isn’t locked into the lineup on this call-up either, unless Johansson ends up unavailable. Milne ranks second on the AHL’s Iowa Wild in scoring, with eight points in 10 games this season and three points in his latest two games.

Other notes from out West:

  • The Colorado Avalanche also made some roster moves, recalling forwards T.J. Tynan and Nikita Prishchepov after brief stints in the minor leagues. Both Tynan and Prishchepov have been regular fixtures of the Avalanche lineup amid their injury woes this season, each playing in six games and recording four points – though Prishchepov’s one goal is the only between the two. Colorado is soon expecting the return of Valeri Nichushkin from suspension and Jonathan Drouin from injury, but their pair of recalls will serve as understudies in the event of any change in plan.
  • While Minnesota and Colorado hedge their bets against injuries, the Vancouver Canucks have sent down top prospects Jonathan Lekkerimaki, Arshdeep Bains, and Aatu Raty in a paper transaction, per Jeff Paterson of Rink Wide: Vancouver. The Canucks will net just over $15.5K in cap space accrual with this move, helping continue to bank cap space over the course of the season. All three players will likely return to the lineup ahead of Vancouver’s Thursday matchup against the New York Islanders.
  • Rounding out Western Conference roster moves is Seattle’s assignment of goaltender Ales Stezka, who served as backup in the team’s Tuesday win over Columbus. Stezka has served as the starter for the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds this season, posting a 2-5-0 record and .894 save percentage in seven games. He’s played ahead of top Kraken goalie prospect Niklas Kokko, who’s managed an .880 save percentage in four games. Stezka’s assignment suggests that Philipp Grubauer will soon return, after suffering an undisclosed injury away from the rink that forced him out of Tuesday’s game.

Wild Reassign Michael Milne

Nov. 11: The Wild announced today that they’d reassigned Milne back to Iowa. Contrary to Hynes’ proclamation, he did not make his NHL debut and instead watched three games from the press box. With Minnesota off until Thursday, there was no need for an extra forward on the roster. He could be back up later in the week for another shot at NHL minutes.

Nov. 6: The Wild announced Wednesday that they’ve recalled left-winger Michael Milne from AHL Iowa. The 22-year-old will make his NHL debut in the coming days, head coach John Hynes said after yesterday’s 5-1 loss to the Kings (via Michael Russo of The Athletic).

Minnesota selected Milne in the third round of the 2022 draft after he’d been passed over in 2021 as one of the oldest first-year eligible players available, given his Sep. 21 birthday. The 5’11” British Columbia native was coming off a breakout fourth and final season of major junior hockey with the WHL’s Winnipeg Ice, tying for second in scoring on a star-studded team that included a pair of top-15 picks that year in Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie.

The Wild signed Milne to his entry-level contract a few months later, allowing him to turn pro and start his professional career in Iowa. That’s where he’s played exclusively since the start of the 2022-23 season. Injuries limited him to a combined 97 appearances over the last two years, and his production was fine but not attention-grabbing (15 G, 19 A, 34 P). This year, however, he’s off to a hot start with four goals and four assists in 10 games. His eight points are second on the club in scoring behind NHL veteran Travis Boyd, and he’s tied for second on the team with a +2 rating.

Minnesota had a pair of open roster spots and $2.6MM in cap space prior to the recall, per PuckPedia. That’s plenty of space to add Milne to the roster to give Hynes some lineup flexibility without general manager Bill Guerin having to make any corresponding moves.

It’s unclear who may come out of the lineup among the Wild’s 12 regular forwards, but it would make sense to ease Milne into his NHL debut against a fairly easy opponent tomorrow in the form of the 4-8-2 Sharks. How he performs in limited action could be quite consequential in his contract negotiations next summer – he’s set to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

West Notes: Rantanen, Suter, Milne

Colorado Avalanche reporter Adrian Dater wrote on his Substack today that forward Mikko Rantanen has said that he won’t hold contract extension talks with the Avalanche during the regular season. This disputes a report from earlier this summer that the two sides were close to a new deal, and it also is in stark contrast to what Meghan Angley reported yesterday when Colorado general manager Chris MacFarland said he didn’t have concerns about the extension talks with Rantanen spilling into the season.

Dater cites NHL sources for his reporting, but it is possible that Rantanen’s camp is posturing and using the threat of his impending free agency next summer to create some urgency around Avalanche management. However, if Colorado does feel that they can’t re-sign Rantanen it will certainly make for an interesting season as they could look to trade the 28-year-old to one of the teams that aren’t on his nine-team no-trade list.

In other Western Conference notes:

  • Thomas Drance of The Athletic tweeted that Vancouver Canucks forward Pius Suter is questionable for the Canucks season opener against Calgary this evening. Suter has been dealing with an upper-body injury and will be a game-time decision tonight. He practiced on the Canucks third line the last few days but doesn’t appear to be fully healthy to start the regular season. If he can’t go, then Aatu Raty will likely take his spot. The 28-year-old is entering the second season of the two-year $3.2MM contract he signed with Vancouver last summer and was a bargain last year, tallying 14 goals and 15 assists in 67 games.
  • The Minnesota Wild have activated forward Michael Milne and assigned him to their AHL affiliate in Iowa. Milne was a third-round pick of the Wild back in 2022 and has yet to see NHL action in his first two professional seasons. The 22-year-old has dressed in 97 AHL games over the last two years, tallying 15 goals and 19 assists. Milne could be destined for Iowa’s bottom six this season where he will look to continue to be a force in the defensive zone and a puck retrieval machine.

Central Notes: Minnesota Injuries, Perfetti, Ohgren

The Minnesota Wild are nursing a few injuries up-and-down the roster in addition to star forward Matt Boldy missing the next few weeks due to a lower-body injury. Michael Russo of The Athletic reports Reese Johnson, Pavel Novak, and Michael Milne are all out with mild upper-body injuries with the latter having yet to practice with the team during training camp.

None of the three were expected to be impact players for the Wild this season with Johnson having the highest odds of the trio to crack the opening night roster. Johnson joined Minnesota this offseason on a one-year league minimum contract and already has seven goals and 17 points in 141 games with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2021-2024. Johnson would be isolated to a bottom-six role with the Wild but will likely start in a ’first man up’ role with AHL Iowa.

Novak and Milne are starting their third seasons with the Wild organization but have exclusively played in the minor leagues. Novak is coming off a 2023-24 season in which he primarily played for the ECHL’s Iowa Heartlanders scoring 14 goals and 27 points in 44 contests. Milne has yet to be demoted to the ECHL as he scored eight goals and 21 points in 40 games for the AHL Wild last year in a bottom-six role when healthy.

Other Central notes:

  • The Winnipeg Jets and forward Cole Perfetti made zero progress on an extension over the weekend reports Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun. The negotiations appear to be a classic case of the player asking too much from the organization’s perspective and the team offering too low from the player’s perspective. Billeck also reported the Jets are unwilling to consider the recent short-term deal for Dawson Mercer and the long-term deal for Dylan Guenther as comparables to Perfetti. He’s still staying on the ice to prepare for the regular season but he and the team have a little over two weeks to get an extension done befor the start of the regular season on October 9th.
  • Back in Minnesota, the organization is eager about the first full season for forward prospect Liam Ohgren. General manager Bill Guerin believes Ohgren can be a flexible winger for the team this season by saying, “The thing I like about Liam, he can play on all four lines. I really feel like Liam can complement any of the four lines he plays on, which is good for him. That brings a value at a young age, and the fact we could fit him in the top six or he can play a different role, that’s a benefit” (Subscription Article). Ohgren scored one goal and two points over four games in his NHL debut last season after scoring 12 goals and 19 points in 26 games for the SHL’s Färjestad BK.

West Notes: Zegras, Barabanov, Milne

After moving out Jamie Drysdale, some are wondering if Ducks GM Pat Verbeek might have another big move up his sleeve.  To that end, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports that Verbeek has discussed center Trevor Zegras with teams this season although it’s not known how far those discussions advanced.  After a tough contract negotiation that eventually yielded a three-year bridge deal with a $5.75MM cap hit, things have not gone well for the 22-year-old.  Injuries have limited him to 19 games heading into tonight’s action while he has struggled offensively with just four goals and three assists.  Unfortunately for Zegras and Anaheim, he suffered a lower-body injury during tonight’s game against Nashville in the first period and did not return.  Any extended absence could put the idea of a possible trade on hold fairly quickly.

More from the Western Conference:

  • Back in the summer, Sharks GM Mike Grier acknowledged that there was some merit to the idea of extending pending unrestricted free agent winger Alexander Barabanov. However, Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News reports that there have yet to be discussions about a new contract for the 29-year-old.  Like many San Jose players this season, 2023-24 has been a struggle for Barabanov who has just seven points in 20 games after coming off a career year that saw him collect 47 points in 68 games.  He has a $2.5MM cap charge and if a new deal isn’t reached, he’ll be one of their more intriguing trade chips in the coming weeks.
  • The Wild activated forward Michael Milne off season-opening IR and assigned him to AHL Iowa, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports (Twitter link). The 21-year-old is in his second professional season after picking up 13 points in 57 AHL contests last year and after missing the first few months of the season due to injury, is expected to play this weekend.  Milne was a third-round pick in 2022 (89th overall) after a breakout season offensively in the WHL that saw him put up 81 points in 68 games.

The Minnesota Wild have inked another prospect, signing Michael Milne to a three-year entry-level contract. The third-round draft pick had been with the Iowa Wild on an amateur tryout but now will be assigned there on his new NHL deal.

Milne is eligible for the AHL despite being drafted this summer as he was an overage pick who turned 20 in September. He was incredibly effective in the WHL last season, scoring 38 goals and 81 points in 68 games. Sometimes he even seemed like the most dangerous player on the ice, an impressive feat on a team that also boasted top picks Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie.

His off-the-rush scoring ability was nearly unmatched, and Milne will now have to find a way to translate that offense to the professional level. He’s already done enough to earn an entry-level deal, now he’ll need to focus on developing and improving his all-around game before being considered for the Wild roster.

With two first-round picks, two seconds, and what looks like a tidy third-round selection in Milne, the 2022 draft class is shaping up to be a nice one for the Wild. Add that to a 2021 class that also had two firsts (including Milne’s younger Winnipeg teammate Carson Lambos, in an interesting wrinkle), and a pair of previous first-rounders in Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi that look like hits, and the Minnesota pipeline is starting to look pretty impressive.
