Patrik Laine Moved To Injured Reserve

The Winnipeg Jets have made several transactions today, not the least of which was moving Patrik Laine to injured reserve. Laine has played in just one game so far this season and will not play tomorrow against the Ottawa Senators. Nate Thompson joins Laine on injured reserve, while Dylan DeMelo has been activated and David Gustafsson has been brought up from the minors to the taxi squad.

While Laine won’t play, it is good news to see DeMelo activated after missing the first four games. The 27-year-old defenseman will be a welcome addition for the Jets who have shuffled their defense around on a daily basis this season, especially after he fit in so well down the stretch in 2020. DeMelo was acquired at the deadline from the Ottawa Senators and logged more than 21 minutes a night in ten regular season games with the Jets, before seeing big minutes again in the postseason bubble.

Murat Ates of The Athletic isn’t sure whether it will be Logan Stanley or Ville Heinola coming out for DeMelo, but does note that the later is still a slide candidate should he play fewer than seven games this season. Heinola has played just one so far, meaning they could potentially send him to the minors and allow his entry-level contract to extend another year. Stanley, who is already 22, will become a restricted free agent in the summer no matter how many games he plays this season.

After a tumultuous offseason that saw Laine’s agent suggest a trade would be best for his client, the 22-year-old forward can’t seem to get back into the lineup thanks to his somewhat mysterious injury. Head coach Paul Maurice told Ken Wiebe of Sportsnet that Laine had more testing done today and that “nothing new came up on it.” In that one game Laine has played, he registered two goals and one assist.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 01/18/21

It appears as though there will be daily movement this season between the active roster and taxi squad this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of shuffle news each day.

  • Pierre Engvall has been promoted from the AHL roster to the taxi squad by the Toronto Maple Leafs after Nick Robertson suffered a knee injury on the weekend. Engvall’s $1.25MM contract actually makes it difficult for him to see the active roster given how tight the cap space is for Toronto, though it could be possible in the coming days should Aaron Dell and Jason Spezza both clear waivers today.
  • Given it is a game day for the Montreal Canadiens, Alexander Romanov has been recalled from the taxi squad. The rookie defenseman has been excellent so far for Montreal but will find himself on the taxi squad between games in order for the Canadiens to accrue extra cap space throughout the season.
  • The Winnipeg Jets have recalled both Ville Heinola and Kristian Vesalainen from the taxi squad, while moving Tucker Poolman to non-roster status. Poolman has been listed on the COVID Related Protocol Absences list for the last two days.
  • The same can be said about Shayne Gostisbehere of the Philadelphia Flyers, who today was given the non-roster designation as well. Connor Bunnaman has been recalled from the taxi squad for the Flyers, who are expected to be without Sean Couturier when they take on the Buffalo Sabres this evening.
  • Mackenzie MacEachern has been assigned to the taxi squad by the St. Louis Blues, while Jake Walman is up in his place. Colton Parayko missed practice today but is expected to play, meaning Walman’s recall may just be precautionary.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Kevin Czuczman to their taxi squad from AHL camp, adding some depth to the traveling group after placing Mike Matheson on injured reserve. The team also assigned Sam Lafferty to the taxi squad, while sending Anthony Angello and Frederick Gaudreau to the AHL. Given that Kasperi Kapanen practiced today and is clear of the COVID protocols, expect him to be added to the active roster before tomorrow’s game.
  • Linus Ullmark will miss tonight’s game for the Buffalo Sabres due to personal reasons, so the team has recalled Jonas Johansson from the taxi squad. Carter Hutton, the team’s other goaltender, allowed five goals on 27 shots in his first appearance this season.
  • The Nashville Predators have recalled Mathieu Olivier from the taxi squad, replacing him with Ben Harpur who was recalled from the AHL. Olivier played in the Predators game on Saturday, recording six hits in just under 12 minutes of ice time.

North Notes: Oilers, Pettersson, Heinola, Kerfoot

It appears that the Oilers will be without a pair of forwards to start the season.  Head coach Dave Tippett told reporters Friday, including Reid Wilkins of 630 CHED (Twitter link), that he doesn’t expect winger James Neal or center Gaetan Haas to be available anytime soon.  Neal is skating while Haas hasn’t started to do so.

Neal had somewhat of a bounce-back year in 2019-20, notching 19 goals in 55 games.  While that’s not great production for a $5.75MM AAV, it was still certainly a step up from his seven-goal output the year before while finishing fourth on the team in that regard.  Haas, meanwhile, spent most of last season on Edmonton’s fourth line, tallying five goals and five assists in 58 games and was going to be in a battle for one of the final spots up front had he been healthy.

Elsewhere in the North Division:

  • The Canucks have yet to engage in extension talks with Elias Pettersson, reports Rick Dhaliwal of TSN 1040 and The Athletic (Twitter link). He’s entering the final year of his entry-level deal and with two straight 66-point seasons under his belt already, he will be in line for a huge raise on his current $925K price tag (before bonuses).  Today’s agreement with Mathew Barzal, a three-year, $21MM deal that guarantees a qualifying offer of $8.4MM at its expiration, could very well be used as a comparable whenever negotiations get underway.  While Vancouver has roughly $25MM in cap room for next season, more than half of that will be eaten up by new deals for Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.
  • Last season, defenseman Ville Heinola made Winnipeg’s roster out of training camp but it appears unlikely he’ll be able to do so this season, especially since he’s in quarantine until Thursday. Jets head coach Paul Maurice acknowledged to Ted Wyman of the Winnipeg Sun that he’s unsure of what the plans will be for the 19-year-old.  It looks like the team could enter the season with eight blueliners on the active roster which would make it difficult for Heinola to earn a spot and it may not be ideal for him to hang around on the taxi squad either although Maurice stated that keeping him up with that group is being considered.
  • Although he has resumed skating, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe noted that Alexander Kerfoot’s availability for Wednesday’s opener against Montreal remains uncertain, relays TSN’s Kristen Shilton (Twitter link). The 26-year-old had a career-low nine goals and 19 assists in 65 games with Toronto last season and will likely reprise his role as their third-line center when he is cleared to return.

Finland Announces Preliminary World Junior Roster

Like many other countries over the last few days and weeks, Finland has announced their preliminary roster for the World Junior Championship, set to take place later this month in Edmonton, Alberta. The Finns won gold in the 2019 tournament two years ago but are looking to get back onto the podium after a disappointing fourth-place finish last year.

Of note, the roster does not include Kaapo Kakko, who, like teammate Alexis Lafreniere, will likely not be released to the tournament despite still being eligible. It also does not include Aatu Raty, who played for the Finns a year ago and is a potential top pick for the 2021 draft, but has struggled mightily this season.

Ville Heinola Loaned To Rauman Lukko

The Winnipeg Jets will do what so many other teams have done this summer and find a place to play for one of their top prospects. Ville Heinola has been loaned to Rauman Lukko of Finland’s Liiga, with the understanding that he will return to North America when the 2020-21 season begins. Heinola played most of the 2019-20 season with the Finnish club and will get a chance to start his season a little bit earlier than his North American counterparts.

Selected 20th overall in 2019, Heinola made an immediate impact at Jets camp and after several injuries (and disappearances) hit the blue line, he was forced into NHL game action as a teenager. The young puck-mover acquitted himself quite well, recording five points in eight games before going back to the minor leagues and then overseas. It’s unlikely that he can keep up that kind of scoring pace through his first full NHL season, but the Jets believe they’ve found a legitimate top-four option that just needs a little more polish.

By heading to Finland again, he’ll end up at NHL training camp with his legs under him and able to hit the ground running. If that ends up in a roster spot isn’t guaranteed since Heinola’s entry-level contract is eligible to slide again next season, but it certainly could as the Jets try to rebuild their club for another postseason run.

NHL Draft Picks Participating In The World Junior Championship

The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship is underway from Ostrava and Trinec in the Czech Republic. The tournament began today and will run through the championship game on January 5th. Each of the NHL’s 31 teams has at least one representative at the WJC. Five teams have only one draft pick participating, while the Los Angeles Kings (9) and Arizona Coyotes (7) each have more than those teams combined. However, it only takes one player and one moment to make history at the WJC. Check out which future NHLers will have that chance this year:

Finland’s WJC Roster Filled With NHL Prospects

The IIHF World Junior tournament is just around the corner now that the calendar has turned to December and the involved countries will soon start to release training camp rosters. Finland is the first to do just that as today they announced a group of 36 players that will compete for a chance to represent their country on the world stage. Finland has continued to develop as a hockey nation every year, supplying the NHL with high-end talent like Kaapo Kakko, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Miro Heiskanen and Patrik Laine in recent drafts.

Ville Heinola Returning To Finland

The Winnipeg Jets have assigned Ville Heinola to Lukko Rauma of Finland’s Liiga, ending his North American development for the time being. The 18-year old defenseman will still be under contract with the Jets and can technically be recalled, but will likely play the rest of the season in his home country. The first year of his entry-level contract will not be burned after playing in just eight NHL games.

Selected 20th overall in June’s draft, Heinola made an immediate impression on the Jets coaching staff and cracked the roster out of training camp. Playing in any professional league at 18 is a challenge, but with his previous experience from Liiga, the young defenseman was incredibly impressive at the NHL level. Thrust into a leading role as the team dealt with injuries (and absences), Heinola recorded five points in eight games before the Jets decided it was better off for his development to play in the minor leagues. He’ll now continue that path in Finland where he can carry even more responsibility.

Perhaps most notably, this means Heinola is a virtual lock for the Finnish World Junior team this winter. In what might be his last chance to play in the tournament, he should be relied on heavily by the coaching staff to play against the other top junior players in the world.

Earlier in the week, the Jets assigned defenseman Ville Heinola to Manitoba of the AHL.  While the official stance was that the move was designed to get him some more ice time, it’s certainly notable that he’s only two games shy of the ten required to officially burn the first year of his entry-level deal.  The demotion gives the 18-year-old the opportunity to trigger his European Assignment Clause but he told Scott Billeck of the Winnipeg Sun that he’s undecided about whether or not to do so and will be discussing the situation with his agent.  An opportunity to go back home for likely more money than his $70K AHL salary would certainly be enticing but the Moose play the same system as the Jets so from a longer-term development standpoint, sticking around in the AHL may be the better play.

Elsewhere in the Central Division:

  • While Bruce Boudreau still has two years left on his contract after this one, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic mentions (subscription required) that both of those years are as a consultant and that this is the final season of his deal as a head coach. With the Wild off to a sluggish start to their season and likely facing an eventual rebuild situation, that could present a viable situation for both sides to have a fresh start after the season although if the team turns it around, an extension (likely a short-term one) would also be feasible for new GM Bill Guerin.
  • The Stars are expected to get winger Blake Comeau back in the near future. Matthew DeFranks of the Dallas Morning News notes that the veteran could return tonight against Montreal or if not then, he’d be probable to play on Tuesday.  Comeau has been out since suffering a lower-body back in the season opener against Boston and would be a welcome addition to their bottom-six group which has struggled to produce so far this season.

Ville Heinola Sent To AHL

Despite being one of the better Winnipeg Jets’ defensemen at times this season, Ville Heinola is headed to the minor leagues. The organization made the move today, preserving for now the first year of Heinola’s entry-level contract. The 18-year old defenseman has played in eight NHL games to this point, but will see his contract slide if he does not suit up for more than nine this season.

Selected 20th overall in June’s draft, Heinola immediately impressed the Winnipeg staff with his calm, professional play at both ends of the rink. The teenager had played a full season in Finland’s top league, logging big minutes even at such a young age. He stepped into a similar situation with Winnipeg, averaging close to 20 minutes of ice time through his first six games.

Though those numbers dropped off as the Jets started to get healthier on the back end (to the point where he has even sat as a healthy scratch), his performance in a short NHL stint should have fans excited about what comes next. Heinola recorded five points and showed he could hang at the highest level, even if he does need a little more seasoning to become a legitimate top option. The fact that he was playing at all as an 18-year old was impressive enough.

This assignment to the Manitoba Moose however may not be for the whole season. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff didn’t rule out a return to Finland for Heinola, explaining that there are still several options at this point. Wherever he plays, the cool-headed defenseman is someone to keep an eye on throughout his development.
