Minor Transactions: 01/04/20

January 4, 2020 at 10:23 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As is usually the case, Saturday is a busy day in the NHL with a dozen games on the calendar which means there should be plenty of roster movement throughout the day.  We’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • The Maple Leafs announced (Twitter link) that they’ve assigned defenseman Teemu Kivihalme to AHL Toronto. The 24-year-old had spent the last few days as injury insurance but will return to the minors to get some playing time.  He has seven points in 28 AHL games so far this season.
  • The Wild have recalled defenseman Louis Belpedio per a team release. Belpedio has played in 35 games with AHL Iowa this season, recording 13 points.  With Nick Seeler going on a conditioning stint yesterday, Belpedio will likely serve as the seventh defenseman with Minnesota until he returns.
  • The Devils announced (via Twitter) that they’ve recalled center Ben Street from AHL Binghamton. His presence is needed with winger Jesper Bratt and center Jack Hughes both out for today’s game against Colorado.  Street has been productive in the minors this season with 33 points in as many games.
  • The Penguins announced that they’ve recalled goalie Emil Larmi from Wheeling of the ECHL. Casey DeSmith was originally supposed to serve as the backup in Montreal tonight but was unable to locate his passport so they had to change their plans.  Thomas DiPauli has also been recalled for the third time in two weeks and he’ll once again serve as injury insurance.
  • Joel Kiviranta is back on his way to the minors as the Stars announced (Twitter link) that he has been loaned back to AHL Texas.  Dallas is off until Wednesday so this will be an opportunity for him to get in some game action.
  • The Blackhawks announced (via Twitter) that they’ve recalled goaltender Kevin Lankinen on an emergency basis from AHL Rockford.  He’s taking the place of Robin Lehner who is dealing with a right knee injury.  Corey Crawford will take over as the starter in Lehner’s absence.
  • With Anthony Duclair’s availability for tonight in question, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch notes (Twitter link) that winger Drake Batherson has been recalled from AHL Belleville.  Batherson leads the AHL in scoring so far this season with 41 points in 33 games.
  • The Ducks appear to have made a pair of recalls as Eric Stephens of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that wingers Daniel Sprong and Kiefer Sherwood are at practice.  Ondrej Kase and Korbinian Holzer are not participating in the skate.

Pittsburgh Penguins Extend Thomas DiPauli

April 30, 2019 at 9:20 am CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

Tuesday: The Penguins have officially announced the contract.

Monday: Jim Rutherford and his Pittsburgh Penguins got an earlier start to this postseason than they would have liked, but they are using the extra time to their advantage. In the midst of swirling trade rumors, the team has now made three signings since their playoff exit, the latest of which has come to light this evening. According to CapFriendly, the Penguins have re-signed forward Thomas DiPauli to a one-year, two-way extension. DiPauli is set to make the new 2019-20 minimum salary of $700K at the NHL level and $100K at the AHL level, with $135K guaranteed. The AHL numbers are a slight raise from this past season, but come in just under those of fellow minor league forward Joseph Cramarossa, who re-upped with the Penguins on Thursday.

The new deal for DiPauli prevents the young forward from leaving this off-season. DiPauli, who celebrates his 25th birthday today, just narrowly qualified as a Group 6 unrestricted free agent as a player of age 25 or older who has completed three or more seasons of pro hockey without playing in a total of 80 NHL games. In fact, DiPauli has played in zero NHL games thus far, due largely in part to struggling with long-term injuries suffered in two of his three pro seasons. Yet, the shifty forward showed enough in just 29 AHL games this season to earn a new contract, registering 15 points and a +6 rating for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

DiPauli, a native of Italy who also holds American citizenship, originally came to the Penguins as a college free agent in 2016. A fourth-round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2012, the U.S. National Team Develop Program product played four years at the University of Notre Dame and starred alongside promising prospects like Boston’s Anders Bjork and Montreal’s Jake Evans. Following his senior year, DiPauli opted not to sign with the Capitals, instead holding out until August to sign with the rival Penguins. There were some expectations that DiPauli could crack the Pittsburgh lineup in year one and become yet another quick, versatile forward who could excel in the Penguins system. Perhaps that role is still on the horizon, as the Penguins seemed determined to keep DiPauli around despite his lack of impact at the NHL level thus far.

Week In Review: 8/15/16 – 8/21/16

August 21, 2016 at 11:54 am CDT | by Brett Barrett Leave a Comment

Less than a month away from the start of rookie camps, the NHL free agency period has slowed down nearly to a halt. However, there were a few notable things happening this past week as some noteworthy college players became unrestricted free agents. Here’s your recap of the week that was:

Notable Signings

Antoine Vermette (Ducks) – After being bought out by the Coyotes in early August, Vermette signed a two-year, $3.5MM contract with their division rivals, the Anaheim Ducks.
Radim Vrbata (Coyotes) – The former Coyote returned to the desert after a two year stint in Vancouver, where he had one very good year (31 goals and 63 points) and one very poor year (13 goals and 27 points). Vrbata signed for one season at $1MM, with a possible total of $3.25MM including performance bonuses.
Matt Cullen (Penguins) – The defending Stanley Cup Champions re-signed Cullen to a one-year, $1MM contract. Despite the cheap signing, the Penguins are still $3.9MM over the $73MM salary cap.
Sean Monahan (Flames) – The restricted free agent center signed a seven-year, $44.625MM contract. The Flames now have $8.6MM of cap space to sign their leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau.

Notable Entry-Level Contracts

John Gilmour (Rangers) – The Rangers made an early splash in the college free agent market, which would soon be overshadowed. Gilmour, the Flames seventh round pick in 2013, posted 65 points in 141 games at Providence College. Pro Hockey Rumor’s third ranked college free agent signed for two seasons worth $1.85MM.
Thomas DiPauli (Penguins) – The Penguins signed PHR’s second ranked college free agent to a two-year, $1.85MM entry-level contract. DiPauli was Capitals fourth round pick in 2012, and posted 78 points in 145 games with the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Jimmy Vesey (Rangers) – By far the highest sought-after college free agent, Vesey surprised many and signed with the Rangers. The subject of much speculation this summer, Vesey was the Predators third round pick back in 2012 but was traded to Buffalo this spring when it was clear he wasn’t going to sign. Vesey is expected to step straight into the NHL and produce at a second or third line rate.
Logan Brown (Senators) – In non-college free agent news, the Senators signed their 11th overall pick to a three-year, $4.9MM entry-level contract. The 6’6, 220 lb center has 117 points in 115 career OHL games.
