Flyers Notes: Trade Deadline, Goaltending, Konecny, Drysdale, Ristolainen

While the recent Chris Tanev trade carried a lighter return than some expected, don’t expect the Flyers to adjust their asking price for their players.  Speaking with reporters on Friday including Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer, GM Daniel Briere indicated that the Calgary-Dallas swap won’t affect how they approach the next few days:

It doesn’t change our asking price. Yeah, it was maybe a little lighter than expected, but it doesn’t change our approach. If teams are not willing to meet our price, and what we feel is fair, you know, we’re a playoff team. We get to keep them and we get to make a run. That’s the way I see it.

Briere also confirmed that the team is still in discussions with the agents for their pending UFAs to assess what it would cost to keep them.  While not naming names, defensemen Sean Walker and Nick Seeler are almost certainly the ones he’s referring to as several teams are showing interest in both blueliners.  That said, if a trade doesn’t happen, Briere cautioned that it doesn’t necessarily mean that an extension will happen either.

  • Goaltending is a bit of a question mark right now behind Samuel Ersson. With Carter Hart out of the picture and Calvin Petersen’s struggles, Felix Sandstrom is now the backup, a role he hasn’t had much success in previously.  Briere acknowledged that they’re looking at all options.  Speculatively, with the team having a little over $6.2MM of cap room on deadline day per CapFriendly, the Flyers could keep an eye on the rental market for netminders to see if there’s a low-cost upgrade available.
  • On the injury front, Briere is hopeful that winger Travis Konecny will be able to return soon from the upper-body injury that has caused him to miss four straight games. Monday versus St. Louis hasn’t been ruled out yet but Thursday against Florida might be more realistic.  Konecny has a 10-point lead on Joel Farabee for the team lead in scoring with 27 goals and 27 assists in 57 games.
  • Meanwhile, on the back end, Jamie Drysdale is getting some strength back in his shoulder after his recent injury but the team does not yet have a timeline for his return although they’re hopeful he’ll be back at some point this season. Veteran Rasmus Ristolainen, who has missed the last three weeks with an upper-body injury of his own, is in the same situation timeline-wise.

Metropolitan Notes: Seeler, Walker, Konecny, Mayfield

The Flyers have a pair of fairly valuable defenders on expiring deals in Nick Seeler and Sean Walker. Despite being in a playoff position and ahead of schedule in their rebuild, the Flyers will likely ship at least one of them out to capitalize on their trade value ahead of the March 8 trade deadline. It’s trending toward Walker being the odd man out, as they’ve yet to formally engage in extension discussions with Walker’s agents, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports Saturday.

Pagnotta notes that the Flyers have talked to Seeler’s representation about an extension. The two defenders have formed one of the unlikeliest value pairings in the league this year, logging over 500 minutes together with a sparkling 56.5 expected goals percentage, per MoneyPuck. The 30-year-old, who’s found his way back into a full-time NHL role after going without a contract for the entire 2020-21 campaign, carries a $775K cap hit and will earn a multi-million dollar raise on his next deal, whether it’s with Philly or somewhere else.

Walker being the likelier one to move makes sense with the state of the trade market, however. He’s considerably more expensive with a $2.65MM cap hit, but he’s also a coveted right-shot defender with significantly more offensive upside than the shutdown-only Seeler. As such, he’ll fetch more value in return. Pagnotta says the Bruins may have interest if it becomes clear he’ll hit the trade market, where he would serve as a third-pairing anchor behind Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo.

Other notes from the Metropolitan Division:

  • Flyers winger Travis Konecny is absent from Saturday’s game against the Rangers, and he’ll miss Sunday’s tilt against the Penguins as well, per Anthony Di Marco of The Fourth Period. Konecny is listed as day-to-day with a minor upper-body injury sustained during practice this week. The 26-year-old is not expected to miss significant time. In his eighth NHL season, Konecny leads Philadelphia in scoring with 27 goals and 54 points in 57 games.
  • Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury and is not in the lineup against the Lightning today, per the team. Mayfield did not appear to miss a shift in the Isles’ last game, a 4-0 loss to the Blues on Thursday. In the first season of a seven-year, $24.5MM contract, Mayfield has missed 16 total games to leg and upper-body injuries. He’s also struggled to produce, going without a goal in 41 games while recording five assists and a -7 rating. Reserve defender Sebastian Aho re-entered the Isles’ lineup in a third-pairing role today after serving as a healthy scratch for six of their past seven games.

Flyers defensemen Sean Walker and Nick Seeler have been speculative trade candidates for most of the season as pending unrestricted free agents but with Philadelphia finding itself in a top-three spot in the Metropolitan Division, there’s a chance they may not move after all.  As Kevin Kurz of The Athletic notes (subscription link), that would be an outcome both blueliners would be quite pleased with as both have expressed an interest in remaining with the Flyers beyond this season.  Walker carries a $2.65MM cap hit and has 15 points in 44 games while logging over 20 minutes a night on the back end while Seeler makes the league minimum and is averaging more than 17 minutes a night.  Both players appear to be heading for raises on the open market next summer.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • The Kraken moved goaltender Philipp Grubauer to LTIR before last night’s late recall of John Hayden, PuckPedia reports (Twitter link). Grubauer has been out for more than a month already so he’s eligible to be activated as soon as he’s cleared to return from his lower-body injury.  The 32-year-old has a 3.25 GAA and a .884 SV% in 17 starts so far this season.
  • Canadiens winger Tanner Pearson will accompany the team on its upcoming road trip as he works his way back from a hand injury, relays Sportsnet’s Eric Engels (Twitter link). The 31-year-old has missed more than a month with this latest hand issue after undergoing several surgeries last season.  Pearson has four goals and four assists in 27 games so far and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
  • The Islanders announced (Twitter link) that winger Pierre Engvall is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury. His first full season in New York hasn’t quite gone to plan as the 27-year-old has just five goals and nine assists in 41 games so far, hardly the type of performance they were expecting after giving him a seven-year, $21MM contract last summer.
  • The ECHL announced that it has approved the expansion application from Bloomington, Illinois to begin play in the 2024-25 season. The yet-to-be-named team will be the 30th squad at that level.  The ECHL has affiliation agreements with 28 of 32 NHL teams this season, a number that could very well go up as a result of this news.
  • Ducks prospect Rodwin Dionicio is having a breakout year in the OHL and had a strong showing at the World Juniors but it appears an entry-level deal won’t be coming his way anytime soon. Instead, EHC Biel-Bienne in Switzerland announced that they’ve inked the blueliner to a three-year contract which will begin next season.  Anaheim has until June 1, 2025 to sign the 19-year-old who has 31 points in as many games at the junior level this season but will they want to commit two seasons of that contract to someone who will be playing overseas?  That’s a decision GM Pat Verbeek will have to ponder down the road.

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is given out annually to the NHL player who exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The Professional Hockey Writers’ Association has voted on the award since 1968, and today they announced their nominees for 2023.

Teams Showing Interest In Nick Seeler

With the trade deadline now just a few weeks away, speculation has started to swirl about some of the prominent players that could be on the move in the coming days.  But the deadline certainly isn’t just about top-end talent as playoff-bound teams are often looking to shore up their depth as well.  One player that fits the depth designation is Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler and ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reports that teams are showing interest in the blueliner.

The 29-year-old has been a regular most nights on the back end for Philadelphia as he has suited up in 49 games so far, the second-most of his career.  Seeler has set career highs offensively with three goals and seven assists while recording 86 blocks and 79 hits while averaging a little over 14 minutes a night.

Those numbers don’t certainly stand out but there is a number that applies to Seeler that does – a cap hit of $775K, just $25K above the league minimum salary.  Even for teams that are right against the Upper Limit of the salary cap, that’s the type of contract that most will be able to afford which should help drum up some interest.

Seeler has one year left on his deal after this one and with Yegor Zamula and Ronnie Attard currently in the minors, it would make some sense for the Flyers to open up a spot for one of those youngsters for the stretch run.  If they can do so and pick up what would likely be a later-round draft pick, all the better.  While James van Riemsdyk will likely draw the most attention in the coming weeks, Seeler will be a player to keep an eye on as well.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Nick Seeler

The Philadelphia Flyers have brought back a depth defenseman, signing Nick Seeler to a two-year extension that will carry an average annual value of $775K.In the press release, it indicates that the deal is one-way/two-way, presumably meaning that in 2022-23 Seeler will be on a one-way contract, and in 2023-24 he will be on a two-way.

Seeler, 28, saw considerable playing time this season, appearing in 43 games with the Flyers. Though he averaged just over 13 minutes in those contests he was still relatively effective, racking up blocks and hits at a good rate while providing another option on the penalty kill. There’s no mistaking Seeler for a top-pairing option, but at this price, he doesn’t have to be.

In fact, there’s no guarantee he even sees the lineup as often next season given the situation the Flyers currently find themselves in. Cam York and Ronnie Attard will both likely push for full-time minutes, while the team still expects Ryan Ellis to return to full strength at some point. That would already give the team six NHL options before even considering any additions made in free agency, or a young player like Yegor Zamula taking a considerable step in his development.

For Seeler, the two-year term provides a bit of security, and $775K would be the highest salary of his career to this point.
