The Nashville Predators are hosting the NHL Draft for the first time in 20 years, and it’s shaping up to be a generational one yet again after the famed 2003 first round produced many future Hall of Famers. A potential top five of Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson, Will Smith, and Matvei Michkov are all set to be possible franchise talents.

Tonight’s draft should also include a fair bit of intrigue with plenty of NHLers on the trade block and potential massive pick-for-pick trades on the draft floor.

Below, we’ll keep track of all 224 selections through tonight and all day Thursday.

Metro Notes: Killorn, Michkov, Konecny, Toffoli

Following yesterday’s trade of forward Ross Colton, the Tampa Bay Lightning have again turned their attention towards securing a contract extension for pending unrestricted free agent winger Alex Killorn, Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic said last night. Things will likely go down to the wire, but this will be one of the tougher negotiations in recent Lightning history. Killorn has reportedly turned down a longer-term extension offer at a low average annual value.

Moving Colton didn’t clear any cap space for Tampa. He was a pending restricted free agent, though, and the team didn’t have the salary cap flexibility to get an extension done. With the contract of retired defenseman Brent Seabrook on their books providing significant cap relief via long-term injured reserve, the team still has just $7.325MM in projected cap space, per CapFriendly – which will be barely enough to re-sign RFA Tanner Jeannot, re-sign or replace their three UFA wingers including Killorn, and re-sign or replace netminder Brian Elliott as Andrei Vasilevskiy’s backup.

With Killorn being one of the top five UFAs available on this year’s market, it’s highly doubtful Tampa can make him a reasonable offer to stay. It would require quite a creative solution from general manager Julien BriseBois, who’s no stranger to cap gymnastics at this stage in his managerial career.

Elsewhere in the Metropolitan Division today:

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere was exuding confidence last night after his decision to draft Matvei Michkov with the seventh overall pick, revealing that he didn’t believe the Russian winger would fall and attempted to trade up. He wasn’t the only one – brand-new Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz was also reportedly trying to leverage assets to move into the top five of last night’s first round. Briere emphasized that the Flyers’ focus on rebuilding allows them to patiently await Michkov’s potential NHL debut, which could come as late as the 2026-27 season after his three-year contract with KHL team SKA St. Petersburg expires.
Staying with the Flyers, LeBrun also mentioned in his midnight column they’ve been receptive to trade offers for winger Travis Konecny, but Briere is inclined to retain him for the upcoming season unless an overwhelming offer emerges. Philadelphia has been the most active team on the trade market thus far in the offseason, already moving Kevin Hayes and Ivan Provorov while still aggressively shopping defenseman Travis Sanheim. The 26-year-old winger matched a career-high in 2022-23 with 61 points and provides high-end contract value at $5.5MM per season through 2025.
Lastly, per LeBrun, recently acquired right winger Tyler Toffoli has expressed his desire to begin contract extension talks with the New Jersey Devils at the earliest opportunity. Toffoli, seeking stability after playing for four teams in the past four years, sees the Devils as a team poised for long-term success. However, LeBrun predicts Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald will encourage Toffoli to familiarize himself with the team and market before initiating extension discussions – similar to the team’s approaches with Erik Haula and Timo Meier as recent examples.

Philadelphia Flyers Select Matvei Michkov Seventh Overall

The Philadelphia Flyers have taken one of the most electrifying talents in this draft class. Matvei Michkov is a Flyer, although the team might have to wait a few years before he actually steps onto the ice for them.

There’s no doubt – the Flyers just nabbed the second-highest upside prospect in the entire draft outside of the top five. There are some very understandable reasons for that, which have been covered at length, but Michkov is well worth the contractual gamble at seventh overall.

Best-case scenario, Philadelphia has a generational scoring winger slated to etch his name among the legends of Flyers lore. Michkov was far and away the best player on his KHL team this season, HK Sochi, which finished at the bottom of the league – which is to say he didn’t have much help. Recording 20 points in 27 games with them, he owns the best draft-year scoring rate of any KHL player.

At the draft, Michkov seemed to show a great deal of enthusiasm for the selection and could aim to head over to the Flyers before his three-year deal with KHL side SKA St. Petersburg expires, but it’s not something anyone should expect. With the Flyers seemingly content to enter an extensive and complete rebuild, Michkov not joining the NHL squad until 2026 isn’t a huge issue.

Nashville Predators Trying To Acquire Top Five Pick

This is a huge night for the Nashville Predators franchise, hosting the 2023 NHL Draft – the first under the leadership of new general manager and franchise coaching legend Barry Trotz. Over the past few hours, it’s become clear Trotz is looking to make an earth-shattering move on the draft floor tonight to move up in the first round.

Multiple reports suggest the Predators have called the Montreal Canadiens about trading up to fifth overall, and Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli now reports Nashville’s put goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov into play. The Russian netminder, who was the 11th overall pick in the 2020 draft, is one of the best netminder prospects in the world and posted a .911 save percentage in 48 games with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals this season.

Askarov would make tremendous amounts of sense for the two teams Nashville’s called about in the top five – Montreal and the San Jose Sharks, who Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic says are getting multiple calls about their fourth overall selection. Both teams have a decent pool of goalie prospects but no surefire starter in their future.

It’ll take much more than Askarov to get either of those teams to part with their picks, though. Nashville holds the 15th and 24th overall selections tonight, with the latter acquired from the Edmonton Oilers for Mattias Ekholm. It’ll take at least Askarov plus the 15th pick, potentially a tad more given the game-breaking, franchise-changing talent available with each of the first five picks in this draft.

With Trotz’s public posturing of wanting high-upside, skilled players in Nashville’s prospect pool, it’s fair to wonder if Nashville is targeting Matvei Michkov if they do move up. While there are some concerns about his defensive engagement (depending on who you ask) and obvious off-ice questions given his contract status and geopolitical uncertainty, he’s the highest-upside prospect in this draft not named Connor Bedard.

Draft Rumors: Capitals, Flyers, Blues, Maple Leafs

The 2023 NHL Draft is quickly approaching, and trade talk is set to increase daily until the event begins Wednesday night. Per The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, at least four teams are actively engaged in trade talks involving first-round picks in this year’s draft – starting with the Washington Capitals and their eighth overall pick.

Washington will at least attempt to move up in the draft, Pagnotta said, although it seems unlikely any team among the seven slated to pick before them would be willing to trade down unless it’s for an exorbitant price. It’s no secret the Capitals have their focus zeroed in on selecting Matvei Michkov, and with interest in the Russian winger heating up, it seems less and less likely he’d be available to them at the eighth overall selection. The only plausible scenarios for Washington would involve Montreal’s fifth overall pick or Arizona’s sixth overall pick – the top four teams in the draft likely have their hearts set on particular selections already, and Montreal’s or Arizona’s interest level in Michkov remains unclear.

More potential developments on the draft floor:

The Flyers would like to add another pick later in the first round after the seventh overall selection, Pagnotta says. Previous reports indicated the Flyers have turned down trade offers for forward Scott Laughton that included a late first-round pick, although it’s unclear whether the selections offered were in the 2023 draft. The team has plenty of trade chips to dangle, including Laughton, Kevin Hayes, Travis Konecny, and others, all of whom could likely net the pick Philadelphia is looking for.
One team that seems like a natural fit for one of those deals is the St. Louis Blues, who Pagnotta notes continue to dangle either the 25th overall pick (acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs) or the 29th overall pick (obtained from the Dallas Stars via the New York Rangers) – but not both. With the team looking to deal from their pool of defensemen, a trade offer based around a late first and one of Colton Parayko, Marco Scandella, or Nick Leddy could net them a solid young piece on offense.
Another team shopping their late first-round selection is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who Pagnotta says are open to moving the 28th overall pick “for immediate help.” With defenseman Jake Muzzin destined for long-term injured reserve, Toronto has nearly $15MM in cap space to add to their roster but still needs to extend goalie Ilya Samsonov and replace five to seven forward spots. The Leafs have yet to be linked to any specific trade targets.

Philadelphia Flyers Interested In Matvei Michkov

The biggest question at next Wednesday’s draft will be how far top Russian prospect Matvei Michkov falls – if at all. Over the past few days, the consensus had become that he wouldn’t get out of the top eight selections, with the Washington Capitals set to take the offensive dynamo if he fell to them.

It seems they may not get the chance. The Philadelphia Flyers are one of many teams set to meet with Michkov in Nashville early next week before the draft commences, and The Fourth Period’s Anthony DiMarco says the team is “seriously considering” selecting him with their seventh overall selection if he’s still available.

Exactly where Michkov would go in the draft has been a roller coaster all season. A surefire top-three selection at the beginning of the season, even with the off-ice factors surrounding any Russian prospect, an early-season injury and subsequent slow start at the bottom of the lineup with KHL club SKA St. Petersburg hurt his stock slightly.

Players like Swedish center Leo Carlsson and American center Will Smith soon surpassed him on some public boards. NHL Central Scouting finished the season with Michkov as the second-ranked international skater behind Carlsson.

Michkov had an exceptional finish to the KHL campaign after being loaned to basement-dwelling club HK Sochi, scoring nine goals and 20 points in 27 games and finishing first on the team in points per game, a massive achievement in the second-best league in the world as an 18-year-old. But off-ice concerns about his stability as a top selection only intensified, as teams couldn’t get any meetings with him while in Russia, and he wasn’t present at the draft combine – both for reasons reportedly out of Michkov’s control. It led to speculation that he could fall out of the top ten entirely.

But with the news that Michkov was coming early to Nashville and opening up opportunities to speak with NHL teams and Washington’s reported willingness to take him, interest in Michkov from the first few teams selecting in the draft has once again spiked. As indicated by multiple previous reports, any team selecting Michkov will likely need approval from ownership, given the potential lost value on the pick if he never comes over to the NHL.

Michkov never coming over is an improbable scenario, but a team will almost definitely have to wait three seasons before they see him on this side of the Atlantic. He’s under contract with St. Petersburg for three more seasons, and one of the KHL’s powerhouses likely wouldn’t be too keen on letting go of one of the highest-ceiling talents in the entire sport.

He would immediately become the best prospect in the Flyers organization – yes, even ahead of top collegiate scorer Cutter Gauthier. Philadelphia’s new front office seems to be content with a proper rebuild, though, and Michkov’s potential arrival in 2026-27 could line up perfectly with the team beginning to turn the corner back toward contention.

Earlier today, we relayed a report from TSN’s Bob McKenzie that prized but risky Russian 2023 NHL Draft prospect Matvei Michkov has multiple interviews scheduled with NHL teams after arriving in Nashville for next week’s big day. In terms of which teams are expected to meet with him, mark the Washington Capitals down as an absolute.

Per The Hockey News’ Sammi Silber, relaying a report from Russian outlet Match.TV, the Capitals are quite high on potentially the best Russian prospect since Alex Ovechkin and are aiming to select him eighth overall – if he falls there. Michkov’s exceptional skill and potential obviously make him an attractive candidate for any team, but it’s still unclear how teams will weigh the political factors at play that could impede his ability to come to play in the NHL. As part of Silber’s report, it’s noted that Michkov was instructed not to meet with NHL representatives while still in Russia, explaining last week’s reported dodging of interviews on his part.

The Capitals seem willing to take the risk, considering their history of success in getting KHL talents to terminate their deals and sign with Washington.

The oft-reported Fiesta Mall site in Mesa, Arizona, is not a leading candidate for the next home of the Arizona Coyotes, PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan says. The team is still exploring various sites for a new arena, with potential other locations in Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land. They’re again aiming to choose a site that caters to their season-ticket holder base, which is predominantly located on the east side of the city, but as Morgan says, are doing everything in their power to avoid another public vote determining the team’s future in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
After using a massive buyout on defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, the Canucks are still undecided on how they want to use their newfound cap space, says Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Speaking on CHEK TV’s Donnie and Dhali show, Friedman reports the Canucks were simply seeking flexibility with the buyout and are looking to upgrade every skater position. The team has at least $6.4MM of space to work with this offseason, per CapFriendly, which could end up being as high as the $15MM neighborhood depending on the injury and contract statuses of forward Tanner Pearson and defensemen Ethan Bear and Tucker Poolman.

Multiple Interviews Scheduled With Matvei Michkov

There is no mystery around who will go first in this year’s NHL Draft, as Connor Bedard can count the minutes until he’s a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. But the future of another top prospect is much less clear.

Matvei Michkov, who has been expected to go near the top of the 2023 draft for years, now faces an uncertain fate thanks to his KHL contract (which reportedly extends through 2025-26), the Russian political climate, and a scouting process that has so far limited viewings and meetings for NHL clubs.

That shroud seems to be lifting, at least somewhat. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that several teams have scheduled meetings with Michkov ahead of next week’s draft, and are eager to get to know the young forward. McKenzie points out, “no elite NHL draft prospect has had fewer live viewings/interactions with NHL GMs/executives/head scouts in his draft year than Michkov.”

A brilliant offensive player that has been compared to nearly every high-level Russian forward throughout his development, Michkov showed off his upside after a midseason transfer to HK Sochi in 2022-23. After failing to receive much playing time with his contracted club, SKA St. Petersburg, an agreement was made to let the 18-year-old play for Sochi, where he scored 20 points in 27 games.

Where Michkov lands will be one of the more exciting news items to come out of this year’s draft, especially if he falls further than expected.

While the New York Rangers filled the final head coaching vacancy in the league today, officially hiring Peter Laviolette, their offseason work is far from over. The Rangers and Laviolette will need to fill out the rest of his staff, which, per The New York Post’s Mollie Walker, will not include assistant coach Gord Murphy.

Goalie coach Benoit Allaire will be the only returning member from last year’s coaching staff. The Rangers relieved former head coach Gerard Gallant’s other assistants, Mike Kelly and Jim Midgley, early last month.

Murphy had been on the Rangers’ staff only as long as Gallant had: two seasons. He was an internal promotion, though, spending two years with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack as an associate head coach from 2019 to 2021. The long-time NHL defender and father of Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Connor Murphy, Gord also spent lengthy stints with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, and Philadelphia Flyers as an assistant.

Draft Notes: Michkov, Canadiens, Hrabal

Despite the fact that there’s virtually no mystery as to who the Chicago Blackhawks will take with the first overall pick at the draft at the end of the month, this year’s event is shaping up to be one with quite a bit of intrigue. Teams behind the Blackhawks have to grapple with a significant dilemma: whether to take a leap of faith to draft Russian winger Matvei Michkov. Michkov is widely regarded to be in the conversation as the most talented player in the draft, and he scored 20 points in 27 games in the KHL after being loaned to HK Sochi, an incredibly productive rate for a draft-year player. But his contract situation with SKA St. Petersburg will keep him in the KHL for at least three years, and with the uncertainty regarding NHL-KHL relations, it’s fair to wonder whether Michkov is worth the risk when other talented players are on the board.

The Athletic’s Arpon Basu and Marc Antoine Godin report word from folks at the NHL’s scouting combine in Buffalo who say that Michkov “might be available outside the top-10.”(subscription link) This would mean that each of the teams inside the draft’s top-10 picks opted not to take the risk on Michkov, highlighting just how risky some front offices deem the selection. That being said, given how talented Michkov appears to be, it would also be no shock to see him go well inside the top-1o. But the bottom line based on this reporting is that while we have a very clear sense of where Connor Bedard will be headed, the landing spot of one of the other best talents in this class is anyone’s guess.

Some other notes about the 2023 draft, which will take place in Nashville on June 28th and 29th:

Basu and Godin got the impression at the combine that it “doesn’t seem very likely” the Canadiens will draft Michkov with the number-five pick should he be on the board. Instead, they feel the team is giving serious consideration to two other top prospects with that pick: polished Austrian defenseman David Reinbacher and versatile American winger Ryan Leonard. Reinbacher is a valuable right-shot blueliner who impressed playing against men in Switzerland’s top pro league, while Leonard is a competitive winger who alongside fellow first-round talents Will Smith and Gabe Perreault shattered U.S. National Team Development Program scoring records.
The Athletic’s Corey Masisiak reports that the San Jose Sharks have on multiple occasions during the season met with Omaha Lancers netminder Michael Hrabal via a team representative. (subscription link) Hrabal, who was measured at nearly six-foot-seven at the combine, is firmly in the mix to be the first goaltender selected at the draft, and it seems the Sharks could be eyeing him as a potential goalie of the future. The Sharks did not sign 2021 81st overall pick Benjamin Gaudreau to an entry-level contract and may enter this offseason with a priority placed on improving the quality of their goaltending prospect pipeline.
