Sharks Notes: Celebrini, Mukhamadullin, Gushchin, Schuldt, Carlsson

Sharks center Macklin Celebrini will suit up for Canada at the upcoming World Championship, reports Max Miller of Sharks Hockey Digest.  The rookie was actually originally named to the squad last year but ultimately didn’t play.  The number one pick last year, Celebrini had an impressive rookie campaign, tallying 25 goals and 38 assists in 70 games to lead San Jose in scoring, five points ahead of William Eklund, who will play for the host Swedes.  Meanwhile, Miller adds that it’s unclear if their other top rookie, Will Smith, will play for Team USA at the event.  Smith was fourth on the Sharks in scoring with 45 points in 74 games.

  • Defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin underwent successful shoulder surgery and is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, relays Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now (Twitter link). The 23-year-old suited up for 30 games with the Sharks this season, collecting nine points and 51 blocked shots while averaging a little over 18 minutes a night of playing time.  Mukhamadullin also had nine assists in 21 games with the AHL’s Barracuda.  He’s expected to push for a full-time lineup spot next season.
  • The team announced (Twitter links) that they’ve assigned forward Daniil Gushchin and defensemen Jimmy Schuldt and Lucas Carlsson to AHL San Jose. Gushchin got into a dozen games with the Sharks this season, notching just one assist.  Meanwhile, Carlsson had a goal and three assists in 13 games while Schuldt was held off the scoresheet in his eight outings, his first NHL action since late in the 2018-19 campaign.  The Barracuda recently clinched a playoff spot and will certainly be happy to have one of their top scorers and two of their better blueliners back for the postseason.

Sharks Don’t Intend To Demote Will Smith

The San Jose Sharks have no intention to demote former fourth overall pick Will Smith to the American Hockey League despite the slow start to his rookie season (as per Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News). Smith joined his teammates today as they boarded a charter flight to Detroit to kick off a five-game road trip against the Red Wings.

It’s been a tale of three wildly different seasons for the 19-year-old after he started the year with no points in his first eight games, then he turned the corner and posted 11 points over a run of 14 games, but then he slumped again, adding just three points in his last 15 games. Smith’s up-and-down offensive contributions have followed a very similar pattern to San Jose’s win/loss record. The Sharks were winless in their first nine games, then went on to win 10 of their next 19 contests before slumping to a 3-13-1 record in their last 17 games.

While the fate of an entire team can’t be attributed to a single rookie, the correlation is stunning. Smith’s bumpy rookie season is not uncommon for highly touted rookies, and every team uses different tactics to assist the player. San Jose has used “development days” throughout the first half of the year as a means of managing Smith’s workload so he has time to work on improving his game. The Sharks also have Smith living with Sharks legend Patrick Marleau, which should also aid in his development.

Smith is in the unenvious position of trying to become a two-way professional hockey player on a team that is likely to be at the bottom of the NHL standings at the end of this season. Another difficult transition for Smith has been in board battles where the 6’0” 181lb forward has had to engage in battles with NHL forwards who outweigh him by a considerable amount.

Sharks Activate Will Smith, Place Klim Kostin On IR

The San Jose Sharks have placed winger Klim Kostin on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. Kostin left San Jose’s Thursday night win over St. Louis in the second period, after a scrum in the corner with a few Blues players. He didn’t appear to get hurt in the altercation, and no word on his official injury has come out. Kostin was a game-time decision for San Jose’s Tuesday loss to Carolina, after blocking a shot with his foot at practice – though he was ultimately able to play. It’s not clear if that lower-body injury is connected to this IR placement.

In a corresponding move, San Jose has activated top young forward William Smith off of IR. Smith spent the last four days on IR with an upper-body injury. He is expected to step right back into the Sharks’ lineup when they host Utah on Saturday. Smith hasn’t played since December 5th, but scored an impressive seven points in six games leading up to his injury. He’s up to 11 points through 24 games this season, after starting the year with no scoring in his first eight NHL games.

Swapping Kostin and Smith may be a jarring change in style, but it should be a seamless lineup change. Kostin earned a promotion to the third line in late November. He’s averaged over 13 minutes of ice time in six games since – a hefty step from his eight-minute-average in San Jose’s first 14 games. With Kostin now headed for the shelf, and newcomer Nikolai Kovalenko expected to round out the top-six next to Macklin Celebrini, the third-line wing will be a natural landing spot for the young Smith. The Sharks have averaged just 2.00 goals-per-game through five games in the month of December – setting Smith up to be an impactful sparkplug, if he can rediscover the scoring hot streak he was on before injury.

Sharks Place Will Smith On IR, Activate Barclay Goodrow

The Sharks placed rookie forward William Smith on injured reserve Tuesday, per Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News. His roster spot goes to veteran Barclay Goodrow, who’s coming off IR and will play in tonight’s game against the Hurricanes after missing five games with an upper-body injury.

Smith, 19, already missed San Jose’s last game, a 3-1 loss to the Panthers on Saturday, with an upper-body issue. Pashelka said he sustained the issue during an undisclosed collision during their 8-1 loss to the Lightning last week. His IR placement is retroactive to Nov. 5, so he could be eligible to return for their Saturday game against Utah.

It’s been a tale of two seasons for Smith, who San Jose drafted fourth overall in 2023. After he went his first eight games without a point, he has 11 points (5 G, 6 A) in his last 16 outings while averaging 14:32 per game. He’s shifted between center and right wing all season long and has played a few games alongside fellow future core piece Macklin Celebrini.

While it hasn’t been a dominant rookie showing for the Boston College product, it’s certainly been a promising one. Consistency is still an area in which he can improve, but he’s averaging over three shot attempts per game and has had an overall positive impact on the Sharks’ possession numbers at even strength. San Jose controls 48.2% of shot attempts with Smith on the ice compared to 45.0% without him.

The Sharks will at least get a veteran presence back in the lineup against the 17-9-1 Hurricanes as they look to bounce back from a nightmarish trip to Florida in which they were outscored 11-2. The 31-year-old Goodrow has had a nightmarish start offensively to his second stint in San Jose after being claimed off waivers from the Rangers over the summer, limited to two goals and no assists in 25 appearances despite averaging nearly 15 minutes per game.

While his offensive totals have continued their downward spiral since his career-best 13 goals and 30 points with the Blueshirts in 2021-22, Goodrow has been a valuable piece defensively for the Sharks. He leads San Jose forwards with 16 takeaways, is ninth on the team with a 47.3 CF%, and is one-quarter of their usual top penalty-killing unit with Mikael Granlund, Cody Ceci and Mario Ferraro.

Goodrow will suit up as the Sharks’ third-line right wing in his return alongside Luke Kunin and Alexander Wennberg, per Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now. Rookie winger Nikolai Kovalenko might also be in line to make his San Jose debut after being acquired from the Avalanche yesterday if Klim Kostin, who left today’s practice with a lower-body injury, can’t play, Max Miller of The Hockey News reports.

As expected, the Golden Knights will welcome back winger Mark Stone to their lineup tonight, notes Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.  The 32-year-old wound up missing 14 games overall due to a pulled muscle, stalling what was a very strong start to his season.  Stone had six goals and 15 assists in 13 games prior to the injury, putting him among Vegas’ top scorers along with linemate Jack Eichel.  With them being off for five days after this game, this is a good chance to test him while ensuring he’ll have ample time off to make sure he’s fully healthy.  Prior to his activation, the Golden Knights had two active roster spots so no corresponding transaction needed to be made.

  • Sharks center Will Smith is listed as a game-time decision for Saturday’s game versus Florida, relays Max Miller of The Hockey News. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky indicated that the rookie is dealing with an upper-body injury but wasn’t sure when it happened.  Smith is off to a decent start to his NHL career, posting five goals and six assists while averaging a little over 14 minutes a night as San Jose tries to ease him in to an extent.
  • Kraken center Yanni Gourde missed tonight’s game versus New Jersey with an undisclosed injury, per NHL.com’s Mike Morreale (Twitter link). The 32-year-old has four goals and eight assists in 27 games so far while averaging just 15:29 per night, his lowest ATOI since the 2019-20 campaign when he was with Tampa Bay.  Gourde missed the final 17 minutes of action on Thursday night while the injury is not believed to be a long-term issue.
  • Flames prospect Zayne Parekh has been added to Canada’s World Junior camp roster as first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie (Twitter link). Calgary drafted the blueliner ninth overall back in June following a dominant showing with OHL Saginaw that saw him record 33 goals and 63 assists in 66 games.  He’s at a slightly lesser pace this season but still has eight goals and 22 helpers in 23 appearances.  Parekh will take the place of Penguins prospect Harrison Brunicke who was initially named to the camp roster but won’t be able to participate due to injury.

Pacific Notes: Canucks, Pietrangelo, Smith

The Vancouver Canucks made a couple of roster moves today, assigning forward Jonathan Lekkerimäki to the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League while recalling forward Max Sasson. Lekkerimäki was called up to Vancouver on November 10th after Brock Boeser was injured during a game against the Los Angeles Kings on November 7th. His demotion could signal that Boeser is ready to return to the lineup, but Sasson’s call-up indicates that he might not be quite ready to play yet.

Lekkerimäki initially filled in for Boeser alongside J.T. Miller and did get some extended looks on the Canucks power play. However, he struggled at even strength as the Canucks were dominated on the possession front (CF% of 45.5% as per Hockey Reference) whenever Lekkerimäki’s line was on the ice. The 20-year-old has a single goal in five NHL games this season and averaged just under 15 minutes of ice time per game.

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have announced that defenseman Alex Pietrangelo is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The news gives the recent Robert Hagg recall some context as Vegas will need another body on the backup, particularly now that they are missing three NHL regulars from their defensive core. Pietrangelo joins Nic Hague and Ben Hutton who are both out of the lineup due to injury. Pietrangelo has had a strong start to the season posting two goals and 12 assists with a +5 plus/minus in 19 games.
  • San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky tells the media that he isn’t aware of any discussions to send Sharks forward Will Smith to the World Juniors to play for Team USA (as per Max Miller of The Hockey News). Smith has struggled considerably in his first NHL season, registering just two goals and two assists in 17 games to go along with an abysmal -12 plus/minus rating. Given his play, it’s fair to wonder if the 2023 fourth-overall pick is NHL-ready, but it doesn’t appear the Sharks have any plans to have Smith play in the Juniors tournament this season.

Sharks May Loan Will Smith To Team USA For World Junior Championships

The United States could be getting a major boost in its quest to repeat as gold medalists for the first time in the tournament’s history. Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News shared earlier that the San Jose Sharks may loan rookie forward Will Smith to Team USA for this year’s tournament.

Team USA didn’t have any player with NHL experience on their roster last year although several had already been drafted. The potential move would be similar to Matthew Poitras’ situation from last season when the Boston Bruins loaned him to Team Canada after putting 27 NHL contests under his belt.

It wouldn’t be the worst idea for Smith’s long-term development, either. He’s gotten off to an unexpectedly slow start this season, with two goals and three points in 13 games while averaging 13:46 of ice time per game. Much of this concerns how head coach Ryan Warsofsky has deployed him to start the year.

Smith has primarily played on a line next to Barclay Goodrow and Luke Kunin, with the trio combining for a dismal 23.8% xGoals% according to Moneypuck. The only line that Smith has worked particularly well with has been with Goodrow and Ty Dellandrea who’ve combined for a team-best 70.0% xGoals%. Unfortunately, they have only managed a little over 16 minutes together.

Smith would quickly become an early favorite to lead the tournament in scoring should he join Team USA. He tied for ninth in scoring during last year’s tournament with four goals and nine points over seven games while finishing the NCAA season with Boston College scoring a whopping 25 goals and 71 points in 41 contests.

After struggling out of the gates to begin his NHL career, the former-fourth overall pick of the 2023 Draft could use a confidence boost. It’ll be difficult for the Sharks to manufacture anything better for Smith than having him help his home country pursue back-to-back gold medals in the highly regarded junior tournament.

Pacific Notes: Gauthier, Smith, Canucks

The Anaheim Ducks will look to get prospect Cutter Gauthier involved in the top six this year but will it be in his traditional position at center? This was a question recently delved into by Patrick Present of The Hockey News who asserts that the Ducks have plenty of good problems to have up front with their roster flexibility.

For all of his collegiate career with the Boston College Eagles, Gauthier primarily served as a traditional center. Gauthier carries a large frame as a forward who plays well below the goal line and carries a tremendous shot which makes him a great option down the middle. However, Anaheim already has two young solid centers Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson without factoring in Ryan Strome and Trevor Zegras. Carlsson is the most natural fit among the group as the rest could shift to the wing.

According to general manager Pat Verbeek, Gauthier should get some time at center during the preseason but will primarily spend his rookie campaign on the wing if the team can stay healthy. His instincts should make him a force to be reckoned with along the wall, and his insatiable forechecking will not be hindered by the move, either. If he starts on the left wing, Gauthier could slot in nicely next to Carlsson and Troy Terry on the first line which could become one of the sneakier lines this season.

  •  In an interview with Chelena Goldman of the NHL, San Jose Sharks prospect Will Smith not only has his eyes set on making the lineup out of training camp in September, but also being a huge contributor to the team. Smith is coming off a dominant season in the NCAA with Boston College in which he led the nation in scoring with 25 goals and 71 points in 41 games. Next to number one overall pick Macklin Celebrini, the two are early favorites to land in the top three of Calder Trophy voting next year. General manager Mike Grier does not want Will to assume he’s already been given a spot on the roster, however, as he said, “These older guys aren’t going to be in any rush to give their spots away to a young guy. It should make for a pretty competitive camp. May the best man win“.
  • In an article last week from Thomas Drance of The Athletic (Subscription Required), he opines that the Vancouver Canucks will undoubtedly be looking for a right-handed center at next year’s trade deadline. Depending on how the season plays out, that could put Vancouver in the market for veteran Claude Giroux who is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season. Giroux has a full no-movement clause from the Ottawa Senators on his current contract so he will need to green-light any move out of the organization. If Giroux is unwilling to head out West, the Canucks could look to go after Nick Bjugstad of the Utah Hockey Club or Jake Evans of the Montreal Canadiens.

Poll: Who Is The Early Favorite For The 2025 Calder Trophy?

The hockey world is in for a treat with the 2024-25 rookie class. A long list of top prospects seem destined for NHL roles, including former high-end draft picks and controversial prospects. Their pursuit of meaningful NHL ice time will be undercut by what’s sure to be an exciting race for the 2025 Calder Trophy. The NHL’s ’Rookie of the Year’ award stands as perhaps the most coveted and exclusive award in the league, having previously gone to franchise-defining talents like Connor Bedard this year, Kirill Kaprizov in 2021, and Cale Makar in 2020. With such a star-studded cast of contenders this year, the winner may have to reach the heights of that trio to win over voters.

That could prove an easy feat for the pair of Macklin Celebrini and Matvei Michkov – likely the leading favorites as things currently stand. Celebrini was the first overall selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and is coming off a dazzling junior hockey career. After winning both the USHL’s ’Rookie of the Year’ and ’Most Valuable Player’ awards as a 16-year-old in 2022-23, Celebrini became the youngest player to ever win the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top player this season. His prowess is undeniable. He’s a defiantly special playmaker, with all of the tools needed to match top speeds. Celebrini is set for a top-line role with the San Jose Sharks, while Michkov will fight for the same recognition from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Michkov is making the jump to the NHL a year earlier than expected, after being released from his contract with the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg this summer. He makes the move to North America after proudly leading HK Sochi. Despite playing on a farm club to SKA, Michkov has still managed 61 points in 77 KHL games over the last two seasons. His 41 points in 47 games this year marked the most of any U20 KHL skater since Kaprizov, the record holder, potted 42 points in 49 games in 2017. Where Celebrini is a quick-thinking and quicker-moving playmaker, Michkov is an all-skill scorer, capable of using a mix of incredibly agile skating, great stickhandling, and a knockout shot to embarrass opponents in the offensive end. The sky is the limit for the Russian phenom, who should finally receive proper support after spending the last two seasons on muddling rosters.

Celebrini and Michkov will be challenged for their spot by a long list of high-end forwards, including Will Smith – who could find himself playing second-fiddle to Celebrini in San Jose. Anaheim Ducks center Cutter Gauthier could also break into the conversation – undermining yet another boost to the Flyers’ prospect pool. But of the many contenders, it’s the dynamic duo of Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Bourque who seem most overlooked in early Calder talks.

Stankoven was a lightning bolt in his first taste of the NHL. The first-year pro fought his way to an NHL call-up with a then-league-leading 57 points in his first 47 AHL games. The scoring didn’t stop in Dallas, as Stankoven proceeded to score 14 points in 24 games – the highest scoring pace (0.58) of any first-year Star since Jason Robertson in 2021 (0.88) and John Klingberg in 2015 (0.58). Stankoven was just one game shy of losing rookie eligibility when Dallas’ season ended, though he was quickly slotted back into the lineup during the playoffs – which don’t count against Calder Trophy eligibility. He continued to hone his game in the race for the Stanley Cup, netting eight points in 19 games and earning a routine role in Dallas’ middle-six.

If not Stankoven, then it’ll be his electric centerman Bourque who wins the title for Dallas. The two forwards were unstoppable with the AHL’s Texas Stars last season, playing with a pace and chemistry that opponents simply couldn’t keep up with. Bourque stayed red-hot even after Stankoven’s call-up, ultimately leading the AHL in scoring with 77 points in 71 games and earning the Les Cunningham Award as the league’s MVP. That was despite last season being just the second pro year of Bourque’s career. He was impressive, and found a way to score consistently despite his oft-criticized frame.

Even with all of the acclaim of the aforementioned forwards, the award could still find its way to other hands. Shakir Mukhamadullin in San Jose, Lane Hutson in Montreal, and Olen Zellweger in Anaheim are all prime candidates from the blue-line, while Dustin Wolf in Calgary and Yaroslav Askarov in Nashville stand as favorites in net – though the latter will have to fight his way above Juuse Saros. It seems the Calder Trophy debate could go in one of countless directions when the first puck is finally dropped – but who do you think will win out? Prospect Notes: Celebrini, Letourneau, MacKinnon, Gordin

While it has been widely expected that Macklin Celebrini will turn pro and play in the NHL in 2024-25, the center told NHL.com’s Mike Morreale earlier this week that he hasn’t decided his plans for next season just yet.  Celebrini is the presumptive top pick in the draft later this month and most of the time, number one selections make the jump right away.  However, it’s possible that Celebrini could opt for a second season at Boston College and then turn pro with San Jose (assuming they pick him as expected) for the stretch run, a route that Owen Power did after being the top selection back in 2021.

Other prospect news from around the hockey world:

  • The departure of Will Smith to San Jose has had a domino effect for draft prospect Dean Letourneau. The Score’s John Matisz relays (Twitter link) that with Smith turning pro, Letourneau has opted to play at Boston College next season instead of starting in 2025-26.  Letourneau, a potential late first-round pick, had a dominant showing at the Canadian high school level, recording 61 goals and 66 assists in just 56 games.
  • Predators prospect blueliner Dylan MacKinnon has been traded in the QMJHL. Moncton announced that they acquired the 19-year-old from Halifax in exchange for a trio of draft picks, one in each of the first three rounds.  MacKinnon was a third-round pick in 2023, going 83rd overall and is coming off a three-goal, 16-point campaign.  Nashville holds his rights until June 1, 2025 so MacKinnon will be hoping for a big year to secure a contract.
  • Canadiens prospect Alexander Gordin has been traded in Russia. Avtomobilist of the KHL announced that they acquired the winger as part of a three-way trade and signed him to a one-year deal.  Montreal drafted the 22-year-old back in the sixth round in 2020 but Gordin has spent limited time in the KHL since then.  This year, he played for Ryazan-VDV in the second-tier VHL, tallying 18 goals and 22 assists in 53 games.  The Canadiens hold Gordin’s rights indefinitely since no transfer agreement is in place with Russia.
