Devils Recall Seven Black Aces

April 24, 2025 at 2:54 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 3 Comments

Since the Devils’ AHL affiliate in Utica failed to make the Calder Cup Playoffs, New Jersey is beefing up its postseason roster with seven Black Aces. The team announced they’ve recalled forwards Brian Halonen, Mike Hardman, Nathan Legare, Marc McLaughlin, defensemen Topias Vilen, Colton White, and goaltender Isaac Poulter as practice players for the remainder of their playoff run.

While the group is technically available to play postseason games for the Devils if need be, that’s never the purpose behind Black Ace recalls during the postseason. Instead, they’ll skate with the team to extend their season since they’re not getting any AHL action.

The four forwards each got into NHL games for New Jersey in 2024-25. It marked Legare’s NHL debut and Hardman’s and McLaughlin’s Devils debuts. Halonen, an undrafted free agent signing out of Michigan Tech in 2022, made a couple of appearances in January amid a strong minor-league showing. Halonen led Utica in goals (27) and ranked second in points (40) in 62 showings. He signed a two-year, two-way extension last May, so he’ll be back with the club next season, barring a trade.

Hardman also logged a pair of appearances for New Jersey, one in December and one in April. They were his first in the NHL since March 2023 as a member of the Blackhawks. A depth free agent pickup last summer, he’s also under contract through 2025-26. The 26-year-old scored 18-17–35 in 57 AHL games and had a team-high +11 rating.

Legare, 24, made his NHL debut in December with a trio of appearances and recorded a minus-one rating. He’s already on his third NHL organization. A third-round pick of the Penguins in 2019, he was traded to the Canadiens in August 2023 as part of the Erik Karlsson three-team deal. He spent under a full season in Montreal’s system before they traded him to New Jersey in a minor-league swap ahead of last year’s AHL trade deadline. He’s a restricted free agent this summer and is eligible for arbitration.

McLaughlin arrived in Newark at the trade deadline, acquired from the Bruins for defenseman Daniil Misyul. He played in the Devils’ final two games of the regular season and recorded an assist and a minus-one rating. The 25-year-old center had six assists in 16 games for Utica after the trade and will be a Group VI unrestricted free agent this summer, so this could be the end of his short stint as a Devil.

Vilen, 22, has yet to make his NHL debut. New Jersey drafted the rearguard in the fifth round of the 2021 draft and he’s coming off his second full season with Utica. The 6’1″, 194-lb lefty had 1-23–24 with a plus-two rating in 58 games this year and has one season remaining on his entry-level contract.

White was a Devils draft pick back in 2015 and returned to the organization last summer after a two-year stint with the Ducks. He hasn’t played in the NHL since logging a career-high 46 appearances for Anaheim in 2022-23. The 27-year-old depth piece rediscovered his game in Utica after a tough second year with Anaheim’s affiliate in San Diego, posting 4-17–21 in 61 games with a plus-one rating.

Poulter has been on the Devils’ roster more than a few times over the past two seasons as an emergency recall and, despite dressing as a backup for regular-season action, hasn’t touched the ice. He posted a .898 SV%, 2.86 GAA, one shutout, and a 16-13-7 record in 36 showings for Utica this year.

Devils Reassign Isaac Poulter, Recall Nico Daws

February 1, 2025 at 9:54 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Saturday: As expected, the Devils announced that Daws has been recalled and will accompany the team on their upcoming two-game road trip.

Thursday: The Devils assigned goaltender Isaac Poulter to AHL Utica on Thursday, per a team announcement. The move banks a bit of cap space during a three-day break in the schedule, but he’s not expected to return to the roster when they leave for a two-game road trip to Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Instead, the more experienced Nico Daws will be recalled “in all likelihood” to backup Jake Allen for the trip, Amanda Stein of the team’s official site reports.

New Jersey recalled Poulter last Friday after news broke that starter Jacob Markström would miss the next four to six weeks with an MCL sprain. The 23-year-old backed up Allen in the Devils’ last three games following Markström’s injury but did not play. He’s still awaiting his NHL debut despite being recalled four times since signing a two-year two-way contract with New Jersey last February.

Initially signed by Utica as an undrafted free agent out of the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League, Poulter is now in his third season of professional hockey. The 6’2″, 174-lb depth netminder has a 2.90 GAA, .900 SV%, four shutouts, and a 32-18-8 record in 60 appearances with Utica, as well as a 2.82 GAA, .911 SV%, one shutout, and a 15-8-2 record in 28 games with ECHL Adirondack. This season has been his first without any ECHL time after establishing himself as a full-time AHL option, taking over as the struggling Comets’ best option between the pipes with a .897 SV% and 8-7-4 record in 19 showings.

Despite outperforming Daws this season, he’ll need to continue biding his time in the minors while the latter gets another chance at NHL ice time. Daws, 24, has 46 games of NHL experience compared to Poulter’s zero, but those have come out of necessity, with injuries being a common theme in the New Jersey crease over the past few seasons. The German-born Canadian national has a 19-22-1 record with a 3.13 GAA and .894 SV% across action in the 2021-22 and 2023-24 campaigns. He allowed 10.2 goals above expected over that multi-year run, per MoneyPuck.

In 21 games with Utica this season, Daws has a 3.40 GAA, .888 SV%, one shutout, and a 5-14-2 record. While he posted save percentages north of .900 in his first two AHL campaigns, he’s been below that mark since the beginning of last year. Neither Daws nor Poulter requires waivers this season, but the former will as of next year. Daws is under contract through next season, while Poulter is a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights.

Devils Recall Isaac Poulter

January 24, 2025 at 12:33 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Devils recalled goaltender Isaac Poulter from AHL Utica on Friday, per a team release. He’ll serve as Jake Allen’s backup for the next four to six weeks after the team confirmed starter Jacob Markström sustained an MCL sprain in Wednesday’s game against the Bruins. The Devils had two open roster spots, so they didn’t need to place Markström on injured reserve to recall Poulter.

Poulter has been recalled multiple times over the last two seasons under emergency conditions but has yet to make his NHL debut. The 23-year-old notably gets the call over Nico Daws, who’s racked up 46 games of NHL experience in a depth role between the pipes for New Jersey since the 2021-22 campaign.

That’s because Poulter has significantly outperformed the 24-year-old Daws with Utica this season. Neither goaltender has posted encouraging numbers behind one of the AHL’s worst teams, but Poulter’s 2.90 GAA, 8-7-3 record, and .897 SV% in 19 games clear Daws’ 3.27 GAA, 4-12-1 record, and .892 SV%.

With Markström on the shelf for an extended period, Poulter should make at least one start during this recall. The Devils don’t have any back-to-backs between now and the break in the schedule for the 4 Nations Face-Off. However, if Markström returns during the middle of his recovery window, New Jersey returns to play after the break with a back-to-back (with travel) against the Stars and Predators that should provide a ripe opportunity for Allen to rest and Poulter to debut.

Poulter, a Winnipeg native, joined the Devils organization in 2022 on an AHL contract with Utica as an undrafted free agent out of the Western Hockey League’s Swift Current Broncos. New Jersey signed him to an entry-level contract in February last season to add him as a recall option. He’s played 60 AHL games over the past three seasons, recording a 2.90 GAA, .900 SV%, four shutouts, and a 32-18-8 record. He also has a 2.82 GAA and .911 SV% in 28 appearances for ECHL Adirondack.

Devils Reassign Nico Daws, Jake Allen To Travel With Team

December 16, 2024 at 1:15 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

2:00 PM: Daws has been promptly reassigned to the minor leagues, with backup Jake Allen sharing that he’ll travel with the team on their upcoming two-game road trip, per James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now. The first game of the trip is against St. Louis, where Allen spent the first seven years of his NHL career. Daws will join Poulter in returning to Utica, giving the Comets their goaltending duo back in full.

9:30 AM: The Devils have swapped temporary backup netminders, announcing the recall of Nico Daws from AHL Utica. They’ve sent Isaac Poulter back down to the minors in a corresponding move after he backed up Jacob Markström in New Jersey’s last three games while Jake Allen is dealing with an upper-body injury.

Daws would have been New Jersey’s preferred option for a recall initially, but the 23-year-old was battling an injury and played for the first time this month over the weekend. A 2020 third-round pick, the German-born Canadian national has a 2.96 GAA, .900 SV%, one shutout, and a 3-9-2 record on the farm with Utica this season.

Especially compared to Poulter’s blank slate, Daws already has a fair amount of experience at the NHL level. While he didn’t see NHL ice in 2022-23, he played at least 20 games for the Devils in both the 2021-22 and 2023-24 campaigns. In 46 career appearances, he has a 19-22-1 record, 3.13 GAA and .894 SV%. He’s saved 13.3 goals below average during that time.

Summoning Daws indicates that Allen will miss a fourth straight game tomorrow when New Jersey faces his former team, the Blues. He’s yet to land on injured reserve, suggesting he’s still a strong possibility of being available on Thursday against the Blue Jackets. The 12-year veteran has been a strong backup to Markström this season, recording a .900 SV% and 2.74 GAA in 10 starts while saving 2.6 goals above expected, per MoneyPuck.

Daws is still waiver-exempt, but in the unlikely event he plays 14 games this season, he’d be at 60 career appearances and would need waivers to return to Utica. Regardless of how much he plays, he’ll need to clear waivers to head to the minors next year.

Devils Recall Isaac Poulter

December 10, 2024 at 9:23 am CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

The New Jersey Devils have recalled goaltender Isaac Poulter. He will back up starter Jacob Markstrom on Tuesday, with veteran Jake Allen expected to miss the game with an undisclosed injury. It’s the third call-up of Poulter’s career, after a pair of brief stints as New Jersey’s backup last Spring.

Poulter has yet to make his NHL debut. Instead, he’s spent the last three seasons bouncing between the ECHL and AHL rosters. He earned his first pro contract in 2022, signing as an undrafted free agent after impressing at New Jersey’s 2022 training camp. Poulter recorded a 10-8-2 record and .910 save percentage in 22 ECHL games in his first pro season. That earned him a call-up to the AHL late in the season, and more formally a chance at the lion’s share of starts in a crowded goalie room last season. Poulter posted a team-leading 17-8-1 record and .911 save percentage in 28 games over 2023-24, complimenting it with a 5-0-1 and .917 in six ECHL games.

Poulter has started this year as the backup to Nico Daws, and hasn’t performed as well with the reduced role. He’s posted a 2-4-2 record and .871 save percentage, a small step below Daws’ 3-8-1 record and .897 save percentage on a struggling Utica lineup. Poulter likely won’t earn his NHL debut on this call-up – and should be headed back to the minor leagues, and back to his competition with Daws, once Allen returns to full health.

Devils Reassign Isaac Poulter

March 25, 2024 at 11:09 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Devils have assigned goaltender Isaac Poulter to AHL Utica, per a team announcement.

Poulter, 22, had spent the entirety of his brief professional career on minor-league deals with Utica before earning an entry-level deal with the Devils last month. New Jersey has now recalled him twice this season on emergency loans to serve as a backup while injuries affected the Devils’ crease, although this most recent summons was to allow new starter Jake Allen some rest during yesterday’s 4-0 win over the Islanders. With Allen set to return to the gameday roster Tuesday against the Maple Leafs, Poulter’s presence is no longer necessary.

The former All-Star starter with WHL Swift Current has still yet to make his NHL debut. After spending most of 2022-23 two levels down with ECHL Adirondack, he’s pushed his way up to a full-time job with Utica this season and leads the team with 28 appearances, posting a strong 2.55 GAA, .911 SV%, 17-8-1 record, and four shutouts.

Signed to a two-year ELC, Poulter won’t be an RFA until 2025. He is waiver-exempt and will remain so until he passes 60 career NHL games or four NHL-contracted seasons, whichever comes first. His ELC carries an $812.5K cap hit and pays him a $70K salary in the minors this season.

New Jersey Devils Recall Isaac Poulter, Send Down Tyler Wotherspoon

March 24, 2024 at 10:00 am CDT | by Brennan McClain 1 Comment

Circumstances have changed quickly for goaltender Isaac Poulter over the last week, as the New Jersey Devils have recalled him after being demoted to the ECHL only five days ago. In the same transaction, the team also announces they have returned Tyler Wotherspoon to the Utica Comets of the AHL after recalling him on an emergency loan less than a week ago.

Poulter originally joined the Devils organization by way of an AHL contract after his tenure with the Swift Current Broncos came to an end after the 2021-22 WHL season. Primarily playing for the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL last year, Poulter produced a 10-8-2 record in 22 games, posting a .910 SV% and a 2.93 GAA.

Continuing to improve this season, Poulter has gotten off to a strong start with the Comets, putting up a 17-8-1 record in 28 games, while also managing a .911 SV% and a 2.55 GAA. Poulter played so well for Utica that New Jersey opted to sign him to a two-year, two-way NHL contract on February 15th of this year, taking him to the end of next season.

Unfortunately, even with Poulter’s strong record and four shutouts this season, poor play from Akira Schmid and Erik Kallgren has capped the Comets at 27 wins in 60 games, causing them to sit in last place in a strong North Division. Now, with his second callup of the season to the NHL level, Poulter will have the chance to practice with the Devils before their game today against the New York Islanders.

In Wotherspoon, it will be his second straight recall to New Jersey on an emergency basis in which he was unable to play in any games. Only suiting up for Utica this year, Wotherspoon has scored four goals and 19 points in 54 games.

Devils Recall Akira Schmid, Reassign Isaac Poulter

February 24, 2024 at 4:42 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

Feb. 24: New Jersey reversed the transaction today, recalling Schmid and returning Poulter to Utica. Schmid will be rostered for Sunday’s game against the Lightning. Poulter did not play during his recall, backing up Daws, who has started seven straight.

Feb. 21: The Devils swapped their backup netminders Wednesday, assigning Akira Schmid to AHL Utica and recalling Isaac Poulter, per a team release.

Today marks Poulter’s first NHL recall after New Jersey signed the 22-year-old to an entry-level contract last week. The undrafted free agent has been the Devils’ best AHL goalie this year, appearing in 24 of Utica’s 47 games while posting a .908 SV% and a 14-7-1 record with three shutouts.

Poulter is in his second professional season after signing a minor-league deal with Utica in 2022. He played four seasons of junior hockey with the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos from 2018 to 2022, amassing a 35-87-12 record in 137 games behind a struggling squad with a relatively strong .898 SV%.

The struggling Vítek Vaněček remains on IR with a lower-body injury and is listed as day-to-day, so Poulter will back up the 23-year-old Nico Daws when he dresses for his first NHL game tomorrow against the Rangers. New Jersey has enough cap space to absorb Poulter’s $812.5K cap hit with number-one defenseman Dougie Hamilton still on LTIR.

Schmid, 23, dressed for five games as Daws’ backup this month but has not played since being demoted to Utica in December. After a solid postseason performance in 2023, he made the team out of camp as Vaněček’s backup. However, a .893 SV% and 5-7-1 record through 13 starts and two relief appearances meant he fell to third on the Devils’ depth chart with Daws returning from a season-opening hip injury. His numbers have dipped further while on assignment to Utica, posting a .885 SV% and a 3-5-4 record in 12 games.

New Jersey Devils Sign Isaac Poulter To Two-Year Deal

February 15, 2024 at 9:12 am CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

The New Jersey Devils have signed goaltender Isaac Poulter to a two-year, entry-level contract. The deal carries an annual average value of $812.5K and carries Poulter through the end of the 2024-25 season.

Poulter, 22, has served as the Utica Comets’ starting goaltender this season, recording 14 wins and a .909 save percentage with the club. He’s been a helpful consistent for the AHL club, serving as one of five goaltenders used by Utica this season. He’s recorded the second-best save percentage of the bunch, behind Nico Daws’ .929 save percentage set in three AHL games.

This is Poulter’s second professional season, with the goaltender spending last season split between the AHL and ECHL. He spent the majority of his time in the latter league, recording 10 wins and a .910 save percentage in 22 games. It’s impressive to see the 2001-born already carving out a starting role in the pros after going undrafted in the NHL Draft. He spent four seasons with the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos between 2018 and 2022, only recording a save percentage above .900 in his final year with the club.

While this deal isn’t likely to immediately impact the NHL lineup, it does give the Devils more secure depth in one of their most-needed positions. The team is continuing to try and find their starter of the future, currently split between starting Daws, Akira Schmid, and Vitek Vanecek. Daws is the only one of the three to have a save percentage above .900, boasting a .906 in 10 NHL games this season. The Devils are also heavily pursuing a goaltender on the trade market, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman who shared that the team recently had an acquisition of Jacob Markstrom fall through. With Poulter avoiding the cycle of goaltenders in Utica, it’s likely that he’s set to stay in the league for much of the season. But this new contract allows Poulter to be recalled to the NHL, offering helpful depth if the Devils do move out any netminders.
