Vancouver Canucks Reassign Kirill Kudryavtsev

According to a team announcement, the Vancouver Canucks have assigned defenseman Kirill Kudryavtsev to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. Vancouver did not make a corresponding roster move.

Even without Kudryavtsev on the roster for tonight’s matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Canucks still have seven defensemen to choose from. The team likely felt confident about captain Quinn Hughes’ performance on Monday, which led them to reassign Kudryavtsev. The 21-year-old Russian was originally recalled on October 26th — one day after Hughes sustained a lower-body injury against the Montreal Canadiens.

Unfortunately, given that seven healthy defensemen were ahead of him on the active roster, Kudryavtsev did not play for the Canucks despite spending 10 days with the team. After today’s reassignment, the only NHL playing time to his name came last season in mid-April.

He has spent most of his playing time in the North American professional circuit with the AHL Canucks. Last season, the first of his professional career, Kudryavtsev scored five goals and 26 points in 65 games with a +18 rating. Further, he registered one goal and 10 points in 21 postseason contests with a +18 rating, helping Abbotsford win the 2025 Calder Cup Final.

This season, he’s off to an encouraging offensive start, tallying five assists in five games. The team has had a challenging start to their Calder Cup defense, holding a record of 2-7-0-1 after their first 10 games, which places them last in the Western Conference.

Canucks Recall Kirill Kudryavtsev, Assign Joseph LaBate

The Vancouver Canucks have recalled defenseman Kirill Kudryavtsev and assigned forward Joseph LaBate. The move once again shifts around roles near the bottom of the Canucks’ lineup, as they try to bear through seven different injuries.

Kudryavtsev’s recall will reward his impressive start to the Abbotsford Canucks season. He has points in four of the team’s five games so far, with five assists total. Kudryavtsev has looked strong and confident. He’s made plays on both ends of the ice, and excelled at creating plays off of the blue line. His performance has been a sure step forward from the 26 points and plus-18 he posted in 65 games as an AHL rookie last season.

It’s not yet clear if he’ll have a chance to crack into the NHL lineup. Vancouver also recently recalled Victor Mancini, who served as the extra defender in Saturday’s loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Kudryavtsev would seemingly need to leap over Mancini and Pierre-Olivier Joseph for a role on the team’s bottom-pair. Neither Joseph nor Mancini have scored in their NHL appearances so far – through three and four games respectively. Mancini also went  without a point in one AHL game. That lack of production could be the need that earns Kudryavtsev his NHL debut, should Vancouver need a spark plug at the bottom of their lineup. Kudryavtsev would most likely play on his off-side as the team’s third-pair right-defenseman, partnered with Marcus Pettersson or Elias N. Pettersson, sohuld he step into the lineup.

On the other side of this deal, LaBate will return to the minors after serving as a healthy scratch on Saturday. He made his NHL season debut in Tuesday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins and didn’t manage any notable stat changes. LaBate has recorded three points, eight penalty minutes, and six shots in four AHL games this season. He’s continued to be a chippy veteran in the minor-leagues, coming off 21 points and 81 penalty minutes in 51 games with the Cleveland Monsters last season.

LaBate returned to the Canucks organization on a one-year, two-way, league-minimum contract this summer. The team originally drafted him in the fourth-round of the 2011 NHL Draft, and awarded him with the first 13 games of his NHL career in 2016-17. Across his career, LaBate has totaled one assists and 31 penalty minutes in 20 NHL games; and 157 points and 781 penalty minutes in 460 AHL games.

Minor Transactions: 4/17/25

With several teams seeing their 2024-25 seasons come to an end in recent days (with more to come tonight), there has been an influx of players being returned to the minors.  We’ll keep track of the moves that have not been already covered here.

  • The Ducks have returned wingers Nikita Nesterenko and Sam Colangelo to AHL San Diego, per a team release. Nesterenko played in a career-best 20 games with Anaheim this season, potting four goals and two assists.  With the Gulls, he has 13 goals and 21 assists in 48 contests.  As for Colangelo, he had ten goals and two helpers in 32 NHL outings while he’s just shy of a point per game in the minors with 35 points in 38 contests.
  • The Canucks announced (Twitter link) that they’ve returned defensemen Kirill Kudryavtsev and Victor Mancini, forwards Aatu Raty, Linus Karlsson, Max Sasson, and Ty Mueller, along with goaltender Nikita Tolopilo to AHL Abbotsford. Raty, Sasson, and Karlsson saw the most action with Vancouver this season with Raty being the most productive with 11 points in 33 appearances.  Mancini got into 16 games after being acquired in the J.T. Miller swap, while the other three all made their respective NHL debuts in recent days.  They will be big additions to an Abbotsford team who has been the hottest team in the league over the last several weeks.
  • The Devils announced that they’ve returned forwards Mike Hardman and Marc McLaughlin to AHL Utica. Both players were recalled on Wednesday and suited up in their regular season finale.  Hardman had an assist in two NHL games while contributing 35 points with the Comets.  As for McLaughlin, his NHL season wrapped up with two goals and three assists in 14 games between New Jersey and Boston while adding 19 points in 48 outings between their respective AHL franchises.

Canucks Recall Kirill Kudryavtsev For NHL Debut

The Canucks announced today that they’ve recalled defenseman Kirill Kudryavtsev from AHL Abbotsford under emergency conditions. The 21-year-old will make his NHL debut in Vancouver’s penultimate game of the season tonight against the Sharks.

Kudryavtsev will presumably slot into a third-pairing role with Derek Forbort unavailable after sustaining an orbital bone fracture in a fight with Wild forward Yakov Trenin on Saturday. His absence left the Canucks with only five healthy defenders since Tyler Myers remains out with an undisclosed injury, per Ben Kuzma of Postmedia.

Vancouver selected Kudryavtsev with a seventh-round selection in the 2022 draft. He’ll be the first player from that round to make his NHL debut and just the second 2022-drafted player selected after the fifth round to see NHL ice, joining Utah’s Maksymilian Szuber. The 5’11”, 201-lb lefty has warranted a late-season look with a strong rookie showing in Abbotsford. He signed his entry-level deal back in 2023 amid a strong showing with the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, but the deal slid to 2024-25 since he didn’t see NHL action. The deal goes into effect this year regardless of how many NHL games he plays because he’s too old to be slide-eligible.

Kudryavtsev would be hard-pressed to imagine a better transition to pro hockey. He leads Abbotsford with a +17 rating and ranks second in scoring among defensemen with 5-21–26 in 63 games. Whether the Russian rearguard manages to snag an opening night roster spot next fall remains to be seen, but it’s clear early on he’s outpacing the development track of a typical late-round pick. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic labeled Kudryavtsev the No. 11 prospect in Vancouver’s system earlier this year.
