Boston Bruins Re-Sign Marc McLaughlin

July 16, 2024 at 3:00 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

The Boston Bruins announced they have re-signed forward Marc McLaughlin to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2024-25 NHL season. McLaughlin will earn the league minimum of $775K at the NHL level on this deal but the Bruins did not disclose his salary in the American Hockey League.

McLaughlin has spent nearly his entire life in the greater Boston area aside from a two-year stint with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in the USHL. The young forward went undrafted during his time in the USHL and committed to Boston College in the NCAA with his freshman beginning in 2018. The North Billerica, MA native spent his entire collegiate career during the last four years of long-time Eagles coach, Jerry York.

Suiting up in 130 games for Boston College during his four-year career, McLaughlin scored 40 goals and 76 points while spending his junior and senior seasons as the team’s captain. The team finished first in their conference during McLaughlin’s sophomore and junior seasons but failed to move beyond the Regional semifinal of the Frozen Four tournament.

Since his collegiate career came to an end following the 2021-22 NCAA season, McLaughlin has spent the last three years with the Bruins organization after signing as a collegiate free agent. McLaughlin suited up in 11 games for Boston down the stretch of the 2021-22 NHL season and scored three goals in total. Since then, McLaughlin hasn’t had much of a chance in the NHL with the Bruins and has primarily played for their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins.

He’s produced modestly in the last three years with Providence as he’s scored 21 goals and 44 points in 135 games. However, McLaughlin’s leadership skills have translated well to professional hockey as the 24-year-old served as one of the assistant captains for the AHL Bruins last season. It is more than likely McLaughlin will start the season with Providence once again but could earn a bottom-six role with Boston out of training camp.

Bruins Recall Nine Players From AHL

May 16, 2024 at 8:12 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 2 Comments

The Boston Bruins have added to their black aces as they have recalled nine players from the AHL’s Providence Bruins (as per AHL Transactions). Providence was eliminated by the Hartford Wolf Pack last Friday for the second year in a row allowing the Bruins to recall the nine players today to take part in the remainder of the Bruins playoff run. Boston will face elimination once again tomorrow night in Game 6 of their best-of-seven series against the Florida Panthers.

Joining the Bruins’ black aces will be forwards Joey Abate, Trevor Kuntar, Marc McLaughlin, Georgii Merkulov, Anthony Richard, and Oskar Steen. Defensively, Michael Callahan and Ian Mitchell will join the team, while goaltender Michael DiPietro also received a callup.

Abate just completed his second season in the NHL and has yet to see NHL action in his brief professional career, while Kuntar was a rookie this season in the AHL after being drafted in the third round back in 2020.

McLaughlin has had brief appearances in the NHL in each of the past three seasons posting four goals in 14 games, including a goal in his only NHL appearance this season. The 24-year-old grew up near Boston and was the captain of Boston College in his final two NCAA seasons.

Merkulov led Providence in scoring this season with 30 goals and 35 assists in 67 AHL games. The undrafted free agent signing has been a solid offensive contributor in the AHL since arriving in 2021-22. The 23-year-old saw his first NHL action this season going scoreless in four games.

Richard has been a mainstay in the AHL for eight seasons but has bounced around in recent years. The former fourth-round pick in 2015 has had a few cups of coffee in the NHL throughout his professional career, posting four goals and four assists in 24 NHL games. The 27-year-old had a goal and two assists in nine NHL games this season with Boston.

Steen spent much of the year with Boston dressing in 34 games but tallying just a single goal. He fared much better in the AHL scoring 12 goals and adding four assists in 25 AHL games. The native of Karlstad, Sweden has been in the Bruins organization for five seasons and remains a tweener bouncing back and forth between the AHL and the NHL in each of the last four years.

On the backend 24-year-old Callahan just completed his third professional season, playing in a career-high 70 AHL games. The former fifth-round pick has yet to make his NHL debut and doesn’t offer much offensively, posting just four goals and 13 assists this season.

Mitchell came over to the Bruins from the Chicago Blackhawks last summer in the trade that sent Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall the other way. He looked like he may have found a home on the Bruins blueline early in the season but hasn’t dressed in an NHL game since December 23rd and was demoted to the AHL. With Providence, the 25-year-old posted solid offensive numbers with six goals and 18 assists in 42 games.

DiPietro’s young career feels as though it’s come full circle as the netminder had a few NHL starts early in his career with the Vancouver Canucks after an impressive OHL career, but his play fell off and he was relegated to the ECHL last season. This year, Dipietro bounced back and posted impressive AHL numbers with an 18-9-2 record to go along with a .918 save percentage and a 2.51 goals-against average.

The nine men will join several of their other Providence teammates along for the ride with Boston as they look to extend their playoff run tomorrow. The black aces are unlikely to see action in the playoffs, but they will have an opportunity to practice with the Bruins and soak in the atmosphere of the NHL playoffs.

Bruins Recall Marc McLaughlin On Emergency Basis

March 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Bruins recalled center Marc McLaughlin from AHL Providence on Friday, per a team release. It’s the first recall of the season for the 24-year-old, which comes under emergency conditions.

Boston was down to 12 forwards and 19 skaters on the active roster after returning minor-league veteran Anthony Richard to Providence yesterday. McLaughlin’s recall gives the Bruins an extra forward in case of emergency on their two-game road trip to Long Island and Toronto over the coming days.

An undrafted free agent signing out of Boston College in 2022, McLaughlin hasn’t panned out as hoped. He came directly to the NHL to close out the 2021-22 season, notching three goals in 11 games after representing the United States at that year’s Winter Olympics. However, McLaughlin failed to make the team out of camp in back-to-back seasons. He’s struggled in Providence, posting just six goals and 11 points in 53 games this season with a -6 rating.

The Bruins re-signed him to a one-year, two-way contract with a $125K salary guarantee after he reached restricted free agency last summer. He’ll be an RFA again with arbitration rights in a few months, although given his AHL production, he may not receive a qualifying offer.

As Boston has an open roster spot and the cap space to recall the Massachusetts native, who carries a $775K cap hit, no corresponding transaction is necessary.

Boston Bruins Sign Marc McLaughlin

July 11, 2023 at 3:19 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

After the conclusion of the 2021-22 NCAA season, Marc McLaughlin signed out of college with his hometown team, the Boston Bruins, on a two-year, $1.85MM contract. Becoming a restricted free agent this offseason, the team has announced a one-year, $775K contract for next season.

Playing in the solid Hockey East division throughout his time in the NCAA, McLaughlin suited up for four seasons with the Boston College Eagles. In the entirety of its history, Boston College has regularly produced a solid club but was only able to reach the Frozen Four Tournament once with McLaughlin on the roster.

In 130 career games for the Eagles, McLaughlin scored 40 goals and 36 assists, really catching some offensive fire in his later years with the team. Initially after signing his contract out of college, McLaughlin suited up in 11 games for the Bruins down the stretch, scoring three goals, the first of which coming in his first-ever game in the professional league.

This past season, with the Bruins having some of the best depth in the league, McLaughlin spent the majority of the year playing for the team’s AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. In 66 games for the baby Bruins, McLaughlin scored 13 goals and 17 assists, finishing 10th on the team in scoring. Overall, Providence had a great year in the AHL, finishing first in the Atlantic Division, but was quickly dispatched by the Hartford Wolf Pack in the division semi-finals.

Boston Bruins Reassign Marc McLaughlin, Joona Koppanen

January 30, 2023 at 2:42 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

With just one game before the break, the Boston Bruins have sent Marc McLaughlin and Joona Koppanen back to the minor leagues. That reduces the team to just 12 forwards on the active roster, though things could change again before Wednesday’s match against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

McLaughlin, 23, played just 9:08 in yesterday’s tilt against the Carolina Hurricanes, his second NHL game of the season. The young forward scored three goals in 11 games down the stretch last year but hasn’t been able to register a point or secure regular minutes this time around. Even the minor leagues haven’t been especially kind to his offensive production, with just seven goals and 17 points in 39 games so far.

Koppanen meanwhile has just one point in five games with Boston this season, the first NHL action of his career. The big forward hasn’t got a ton of ice time and appears to be nothing more than an injury replacement at this point in his career.

While he does have 20 points in 36 games for Providence, Koppanen will turn 25 next month and is scheduled to reach Group VI unrestricted free agency in the summer.

Boston Bruins Recall Marc McLaughlin

January 23, 2023 at 10:46 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

It’s time for the hometown kid to get another chance. Marc McLaughlin has been recalled by the Boston Bruins, after some strong play in the minor leagues.

McLaughlin, 23, was signed last season as an undrafted NCAA free agent after captaining Boston College and suiting up at the Olympics for Team USA. The North Billerica native played in 11 games down the stretch for the Bruins, scoring his first three NHL goals in the process.

This year, he’s been with the Providence Bruins for the entire season, recording seven goals and 17 points in 39 games. Seven of those points have come in the last five games, as his game has hit a new level of late.

Boston is hitting the road for five straight, starting in Montreal tomorrow night before stopping to play Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina, and Toronto before the All-Star break. Having another forward was necessary for the long road trip, meaning McLaughlin’s strong play came at the perfect time.
