Troy Terry Sent To AHL On Conditioning Loan

The Anaheim Ducks have sent injured forward Troy Terry to the minor leagues on a long-term injury conditioning loan, as he continues to recover from a broken bone below his kneecap. At the time of the injury it was announced that Terry would miss approximately ten weeks, of which only three have elapsed. The team has also recalled Chase De Leo from the AHL.

It’s actually not even the first broken leg for Terry, who suffered a non-displaced fracture last April which ended his season early. As Elliott Teaford of the Orange County Register reported yesterday however, Terry has bounced back from this latest injury at an incredibly fast rate and has even resumed skating recently.

The 22-year old forward has played in 33 games for the Ducks this season, though he hasn’t been very effective offensively. With three goals and eight points in those games he is actually scoring at an even worse rate than he did last year as a rookie, something unexpected given the flashes he had shown at the University of Denver and in the minor leagues.

Getting back into some games will allow Terry’s development to continue, though where his ceiling really sits at this point isn’t clear. The fifth-round pick has to bring more to the table to be truly considered a building block moving forward. The fact that he will be a restricted free agent at the end of this season complicates things, though he is still not eligible for arbitration.

Ducks Avoid Arbitration With Chase De Leo

The Ducks have avoided salary arbitration with center Chase De Leo.  CapFriendly reports (Twitter link) that Anaheim has signed him a one-year, two-way contract.  The deal will pay him $750K in the NHL, $100K in the AHL, and contains a guaranteed salary of $130K.

Anaheim acquired the 23-year-old just before last year’s free agent period opened up in a trade with Winnipeg.  The change of scenery certainly helped De Leo as he posted career highs across the board with AHL San Diego, collecting 20 goals and 35 assists in 66 games.  His performance was good enough to earn him a brief recall to the Ducks, his first NHL action in three years.

With the recent re-signing of center Derek Grant and the addition of winger Nicolas Deslauriers last month, there doesn’t appear to be much of an opening for De Leo to make a case for a full-time spot with Anaheim in 2019-20.  However, another strong showing with the Gulls should have him in the mix for another recall at some point next season.

Seventeen Players Placed On Waivers

Every player placed on waivers yesterday – even surprise Ottawa Senators addition Zack Smith – cleared, as the wire continues to be a smooth operation for NHL teams looking to re-stock their AHL clubs this preseason. Will the next round of players also go untouched? Per TVA’s Renaud Lavoie, another 17 players have been waived today, including:

Odds are that this group of players will likely play out as the other have this off-season. There are very few names that jump out as worthy of an NHL roster spot. Many are also recent unrestricted free agents, meaning teams have had a chance to bring them in already and 30 didn’t do so.

Of the group, Berube and Pirri have the most name value. A former top goalie prospect who the New York Islanders once kept on as a third goalie simply so that he would not be subjected to waivers, Berube has lost much of his shine. A poor effort as the third-string goalie for the Chicago Blackhawks last season led to an off-season trade to Columbus, where he will most likely play in the AHL for much of the year. Teams desperate for a backup goalie would be better off with Coreau than Berube in all likelihood. As for Pirri, the one-time 20-goal scorer is hard to get a read on, excelling with some teams and struggling with others. He only played in two games last year with the Golden Knights and score three goals, yet somehow was unable to hold on to a roster spot. One of the league’s greatest enigma’s, Pirri’s value on waivers is a mystery.

Graovac, Rychel, and Quine are nice bottom-six pieces, but signed to two-way contracts for a reason. Oleksy is an ideal eighth or ninth defenseman. The Carrick brothers are also solid pros but have been limited in their NHL experience due to ability not opportunity. Others on the list are similar: notable veterans who would be an asset as a minor league depth player, but simply not as a lock on the NHL roster.

Finally, there’s Rodin, who may be the outlier that could be claimed by the right team. The former Swedish Hockey League MVP has unquestionable ability, but was not able to make a difference with the Vancouver Canucks and seemingly has realized the same fate with the Anaheim Ducks. A team willing to guarantee him top-nine ice time could find that he is a weapon when healthy. Is that upside worthy of a waiver claim?

Chase De Leo Signs With Anaheim Ducks

CapFriendly is at it again, this time breaking the news that Chase De Leo has re-signed with the Anaheim Ducks. De Leo has agreed to a one-year two-way contract that will pay him just $650K at the NHL level. The 22-year old forward was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets just last month, in exchange for Nicolas Kerdiles.

De Leo was originally selected in the fourth round in 2014, but has proven himself to be an excellent minor league player with the Manitoba Moose. Scoring at least 32 points in each of the last three seasons, it was clear he wasn’t going to leapfrog over the glut of talented young forwards in the Winnipeg system, and would likely be a minor league player for much of his career. Things could potentially be a bit different in Anaheim, where they aren’t nearly as deep up front and especially at the center ice position.

Should the Ducks deal with injuries at the NHL level—something very possible when dealing with Ryan Kesler—there’s a chance that De Leo could get into a few games as a depth option. Unfortunately he is waiver eligible now, so even to be assigned to the minor leagues at the end of camp he’ll have to clear. That actually could hurt his chances of being an injury replacement depending on the circumstances, but we’ll have to wait to find out. Even if he doesn’t see the NHL this season, the San Diego Gulls will be happy to have him in the AHL.
