Evening Notes: Wilsby, Georgiev, Makar

The Nashville Predators have announced that they’ve sent defenseman Adam Wilsby to the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. The 24-year-old had been up with the team since November 13th but didn’t see any NHL action. The fourth-round pick in 2020 is in his third professional season in North America and has dressed in 11 AHL games this year with Milwaukee, tallying a goal and two assists to go along with a +4 rating.

The Stockholm, Sweden native has yet to see NHL action in three seasons with the Predators organization but remains someone that team management is high on despite his lack of offensive production. Wilsby has impressed in the AHL with his skating, gap control, and defending in his zone and will likely see another call-up soon.

In other evening notes:

  • Colorado Avalanche netminder Alexandar Georgiev took part in the team’s skate today and could be an option tomorrow in Washington depending on how he feels tonight and tomorrow (as per Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette). The development suggests that Colorado is optimistic about the 28-year-old’s recovery and potential return to the lineup. The Avalanche badly need some better goaltending as the team has the worst save percentage in the entire NHL. Georgiev also has a vested interest in turning around the team’s fortune as he is just over seven months away from unrestricted free agency.
  • Sticking with the Avalanche, David Satriano of NHL.com writes that defenseman Cale Makar is the early favourite to capture the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman. NHL.com held a 15-person panel to vote on the early season winners and Makar came out ahead of Quinn Hughes and Josh Morrissey. Makar was the NHL’s First Star of the Month in October and began the season with an 11-game point streak that saw him register four goals and 15 assists. Makar is now up to eight goals and 19 assists in 19 games, which is a big reason Colorado has been able to keep pace in the Western Conference despite league-worst goaltending and a litany of injury issues.

Predators Recall Adam Wilsby

The Predators have recalled defenseman Adam Wilsby from AHL Milwaukee, Alex Daugherty of the Tennessean reports Wednesday. The 24-year-old replaces the roster spot vacated by Dante Fabbro, who was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets on Saturday.

Wilsby, a fourth-round pick in 2020, is in his third season suiting up for the Preds’ farm club in Wisconsin. The smooth-skating left-shot defender has one goal and two assists for three points in 11 games this season while recording a +4 rating, tied for fourth on the team.

The Stockholm native has been under consideration for a recall for quite some time, but he’s narrowly lost out over the past couple of seasons to competitors like Marc Del Gaizo and Spencer Stastney. Del Gaizo had established himself ahead of Fabbro on the depth chart while Stastney remains on an extended personal leave, so it’s now Wilsby’s chance to compete for NHL minutes.

The last-place Predators have six healthy defensemen available, but they may look to make a lineup change after going 1-3-1 in their past five games. If so, Wilsby could make his NHL debut on Thursday against the Oilers. Either way, Nashville will have a much-needed extra defenseman on hand for their four-game road swing through Canada and the Pacific Northwest should an injury arise.

Since making his AHL debut for Milwaukee in the 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs, Wilsby has 10 goals, 32 assists, 42 points, and a +21 rating in 144 regular-season minor-league games. He’ll remain waiver-exempt through 2024-25 but will require them to head to the minors beginning next season. After a brief stint on the restricted free agent market last summer, he signed a two-way deal to return to Nashville. He’ll be up for RFA status again with arbitration eligibility at the end of the campaign.

Predators Sign Adam Wilsby

The Nashville Predators have signed defender Adam Wilsby to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will carry a $775K salary at the NHL level.

Nashville drafted Wilsby in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, selecting him in his final year of eligibility after a strong season with Sodertalje SK of the HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden’s second-tier league. Wilsby recorded 30 points in 41 games that year, helping Sodertalje earn promotion to the SHL and following the performance up with two strong seasons at the top flight to help keep them there.

With a successful run in Sweden in the rearview, Wilsby signed an uncommon two-year entry-level contract with the Predators in 2022. But he struggled to carry his momentum over from Sweden, posting just 18 points as an AHL rookie, though he did play in all 72 games. He also appeared in 16 postseason games, where a quicker pace boosted him to a productive eight points. He improved to 21 points in 61 games this season, though still seems far from finding the comfortable footing he had in the SHL.

Still, there’s reason to be excited about Wilsby’s stout control of the blue line and ability to spark transition. He’s a young defender who seems to have more to give and will get a chance to prove his worth to the Predators next season, fighting for a much hardier NHL deal next summer.

Canucks forward Elias Lindholm has struggled as of late and snapped a 15-game goalless streak last night against his former team in Calgary.  It appears there’s a reason for those struggles as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported last night (video link) that the veteran is set to meet with a specialist in the coming days to determine the extent of the undisclosed injury that he is currently playing through.  The 29-year-old has just nine points in 22 games since being acquired at the end of January and has been dropped to the third line in recent games, not the type of impact they were looking for from their biggest trade acquisition of the season.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • The Ducks announced that they recalled goaltender Alex Stalock from AHL San Diego. The 36-year-old had been brought up four times this season but has yet to see game action with Anaheim, instead serving in a short-term backup role.  He’ll be reprising that role against Tampa Bay with John Gibson out for personal reasons.  Stalock has played in a dozen games for the Gulls this season while playing on a one-year, one-way deal worth $800K, posting a 3.72 GAA with a .894 SV%.  He’ll be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
  • The Coyotes announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Cameron Crotty from AHL Tucson on an emergency basis. The 24-year-old is in his fourth professional season and this will be his first recall and first game as he took the place of Josh Brown who was out due to an illness.  Crotty has three goals and nine assists in 45 games with the Roadrunners this season.
  • Predators prospect Adam Wilsby has been linked to SHL Farjestad next season, notes Varlands Folkblad’s Johan Ekberg. The 23-year-old blueliner was a fourth-round pick back in 2020 and has spent his three-year entry-level deal playing with AHL Milwaukee where he has six goals and eight assists through 49 games so far.  A pending restricted free agent, it might make more sense for Wilsby to return home over continuing to play in the minors as he’s likely behind several prospects on Nashville’s organizational depth chart.
  • The NCAA revealed the official bracket for the tournament leading to the Frozen Four and the DI Men’s Ice Hockey Championship with Boston College serving as the top seed. Games get underway on Thursday and as teams are eliminated, we’ll start to see some of the more notable free agents start to sign while others will forego the rest of their college eligibility to turn pro.

Nashville Predators Sign Adam Wilsby

The Nashville Predators have inked another one of their prospects, this time signing Adam Wilsby to a two-year entry-level contract. The deal will start in 2022-23. CapFriendly reports that the contract has a cap hit of $842,500, earning Wilsby a salary of $750,000 in year one and $775,000 in year two. Both seasons contain a signing bonus and minors salary of $80,000.

Wilsby, 21, recently finished his second full SHL season with Skelleftea AIK, where he recorded 17 points in 51 regular season games. The young defenseman was a fourth-round pick of the Predators in 2020, selected 101st overall. While he may not be the most exciting name in the Predators’ prospect pipeline, Wilsby can skate like the wind and at least represents some organizational depth on defense. His success in the SHL even early on suggests he could fit right in on an AHL blueline already, though it’s unclear at this point if that’s the plan for him next season.

Given that he’s unlikely to spend much time in the NHL, the team could still loan him back overseas for another year. In fact, since his SHL contract actually extends through 2022-23, that seems the likely scenario, despite this new entry-level deal with Nashville. It still might be some time until Predators fans see him in the NHL lineup, but the fact that his post-draft years have gone this well is always a positive.
