Fletcher: Not Doing Scorched-Earth Rebuild, Focus Is On Rentals, Konecny Might Not Return This Season

February 28, 2023 at 9:28 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 7 Comments

Speaking with reporters today (video link), Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher discussed his plans for the upcoming trade deadline.  Unsurprisingly, the team plans to sell and he acknowledged that the bulk of the discussions so far have been regarding players on expiring contracts, particularly winger James van Riemsdyk.  However, he made a point to say that he doesn’t intend for the team to go into a scorched-earth rebuild which suggests that Philadelphia’s deadline activity could be somewhat limited if they primarily deal with moving players on expiring contracts.  Fletcher also mentioned that they don’t plan to add too many players from Lehigh Valley to allow them to continue to battle for a spot in the AHL playoffs.

  • Also from Fletcher’s press conference, he indicated that winger Travis Konecny is going to miss at least a few more weeks due to his upper-body injury. With the Flyers not heading for the playoffs, the GM indicated that it’s possible that there isn’t enough time for him to return this season.  The 25-year-old is seven points shy of matching his career-high of 61 but at this point, it doesn’t seem likely that Konecny will be able to get there.

Travis Konecny Out An "Extended" Period Of Time

February 27, 2023 at 1:48 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

It’s been a week since Travis Konecny went down to an upper-body injury, and the Philadelphia Flyers still haven’t released an official timeline for his return. Today, head coach John Tortorella gave reports at least a bit of an update, explaining to Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic that Konecny would be out for an extended period.

As much as Tortorella and the rest of the Flyers don’t want to admit it, removing Konecny from the lineup may actually be a good thing. The 25-year-old is the team’s best offensive (and perhaps all-around) player, with 27 goals and 54 points in 52 games this season. His absence has been evident over the last few games, including a 5-2 loss to the bottom-dwelling Montreal Canadiens and a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of the rival New Jersey Devils. As the Flyers drop toward the bottom of the standings, they rise closer to the top of the draft lottery odds.

Flyers Recall Desnoyers

February 27, 2023 at 10:12 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

  • Elliot Desnoyers is back up with the Philadelphia Flyers, though he isn’t on the ice at morning skate, according to Olivia Reiner of the Philadelphia Inquirer. After making his NHL debut on Saturday with the Flyers, he returned and played with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms last night, registering an assist and four shots on goal.

Nashville Predators Acquire Isaac Ratcliffe

February 27, 2023 at 9:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Nashville Predators aren’t just selling at the deadline. Last night they made a smaller deal to acquire Isaac Ratcliffe from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for future considerations. The move gives the former top prospect a new home, and perhaps a fresh start as he continues to struggle at the professional level.

Selected 35th overall in 2017, Ratcliffe was a force to be reckoned with for the Guelph Storm of the OHL. The 6’6″ winger could lean on smaller junior players and bully his way to the net, resulting in massive point totals and sky-high expectations. In his final year with Guelph he scored 50 goals in 65 regular season games, while adding 105 penalty minutes. He seemed like the perfect Flyers prospect.

Unfortunately, that performance never carried over to the AHL. Ratcliffe scored just 15 points as a rookie in 2019-20, and was limited by injuries the following year. His best performance so far was in 2021-22 when he had 11 goals and 28 points for Lehigh Valley, while also making his NHL debut. Through 10 games with the Flyers, he had four points—not bad for a young player still finding his way, and encouraging enough to earn a new one-year deal with the club.

This year has been a disaster though, with just two goals and four points in 26 minor league contests. Given his age and performance so far, Ratcliffe was a real candidate to go unqualified in the offseason. He’ll get a chance to catch on in Nashville before that happens, though his future as an NHL player is still completely unclear.

Flyers Receiving Interest In James Van Riemsdyk

February 26, 2023 at 7:12 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

As more trade targets come off the board, others now are shifting to the forefront.  That appears to be the case for Flyers winger James van Riemsdyk as TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that there are now several teams showing interest in the veteran.  Michael Russo of The Athletic adds (Twitter link) that the Wild are among those teams.

The 33-year-old has been a quality scorer throughout his career, averaging 26.5 goals per 82 games.  Notably, van Riemsdyk has been a strong producer on the power play, potting 21 goals with the man advantage since the 2020-21 campaign.  This would certainly be appealing to playoff-bound teams who could use him in a middle-six role at even strength while deploying him in a more prominent spot on the power play.

Despite his track record, van Riemsdyk is in the middle of a bit of a down season as he has just nine goals and 14 assists in 40 games while also missing 20 contests due to a hand injury.  He also carries a sizable price tag with a $7MM AAV in the final season of a five-year, $35MM pact signed back in 2018.  Notably, that deal does not carry any form of trade protection.

Philadelphia has all three of its salary retention slots remaining so it seems quite likely that they’ll retain up to the maximum of 50% ($3.5MM) to help facilitate a move and help secure a better return.  It’s unlikely that van Riemsdyk will command a first-round pick in return even with a strong market but the Flyers will have a chance to add at least a decent piece for the future by flipping him elsewhere in the coming days.

Flyers Recall Elliot Desnoyers

February 25, 2023 at 10:18 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Flyers are giving one of their more promising prospects his first taste of NHL action as the team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled winger Elliot Desnoyers from Lehigh Valley of the AHL.  He will make his NHL debut tonight against New Jersey.

The 21-year-old was a fifth-round pick by Philadelphia back in 2020 (135th overall) but has certainly outperformed his draft stock since then.  He became an impact scorer at the major junior level after being drafted, recording 137 points in 108 games with Halifax of the QMJHL after being selected which helped him earn a spot on Canada’s entry into the World Juniors last summer.

This season, Desnoyers has made the adjustment to playing in the pros and has done quite well, leading the Phantoms in scoring with 19 goals and 17 assists in 48 games.  He’ll now get a chance to see if that scoring touch can translate to the NHL level.

To make room for Desnoyers on the roster, the Flyers placed winger Travis Konecny on injured reserve.  He suffered an upper-body injury on Monday against Calgary and there’s no timeline for how long he’ll be out.

Injury Notes: Maple Leafs, Flyers, Sillinger

February 24, 2023 at 4:42 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Toronto Maple Leafs have two injured players trending in opposite directions. TSN’s Mark Masters reports that defenseman Rasmus Sandin will miss his third straight game, while head coach Sheldon Keefe said today that goalie Matt Murray will rejoin practice tomorrow and travel on their upcoming five-game road trip.

Sandin is out with an upper-body injury but has not been placed on injured reserve. The 2018 first-round pick is having a strong season offensively, having stepped up to produce 20 points in 51 games while averaging a hair over 18 minutes per game. Murray has been out since the end of January with an ankle injury, his second long-term absence this season. While his questionable injury history has followed him to Toronto, he’s shown improved play when healthy, compiling an 11-5-2 record and a .911 save percentage in 19 appearances.

  • The Philadelphia Flyers could be close to getting a fan favorite back in the lineup. Zack MacEwen, who’s been out since late January with a jaw injury sustained in a fight, was on the ice for morning skate today, says The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Olivia Reiner. MacEwen had nine points and 54 penalty minutes in 46 games this season. The news isn’t so positive on Travis Konecny, who head coach John Tortorella said is still being evaluated after leaving the team’s game against Calgary last Monday with an upper-body injury.
  • Cole Sillinger took to the ice at practice for the Columbus Blue Jackets today, per team reporter Jeff Svoboda. An illness kept the sophomore center out of yesterday’s game with an illness. It’s been a tough second crack at the NHL for Sillinger, who has just eight points in 52 games this season.

Joel Farabee Upset With How Season Has Gone

February 23, 2023 at 2:26 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

Speculation is running rampant with the trade deadline so close, but some interesting tidbits have also started to leak out. Agents and teams alike will reveal things to impact negotiations one way or another. One of those might have to do with Joel Farabee, whose camp has “voiced their displeasure” to the Philadelphia Flyers over how this season has played out, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.

Travis Konecny To Miss Tonight's Game

February 21, 2023 at 6:56 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

  • Travis Konecny will miss tonight’s Philadelphia Flyers contest against the Edmonton Oilers. Flyers beat reporter Giana Han of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports Konecny has an upper-body injury and will be assessed by medical staff when the team returns home. The Flyers wrap up a four-game western road trip tonight and will be looking to tighten things up defensively after allowing 15 goals in the previous three games. They will miss Konecny’s presence as he is the team’s leading scorer with 54 points this season.

Philadelphia Flyers Make Several Roster Moves

February 13, 2023 at 5:35 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that forward Kieffer Bellows and goaltender Samuel Ersson have been recalled from the team’s AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. In addition, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Olivier Reiner notes that Zack MacEwen has been placed on injured reserve.

These moves bring Bellows back to the Flyers’ active roster just days after he was placed on waivers by the team. Bellows played one game in his stint in the minors, tallying an assist and three shots on goal in Lehigh Valley’s 3-0 win over the Bridgeport Islanders.

Bellows now has ten points in 12 AHL games this season, although he has found NHL success harder to come by. He has just one goal in 16 total games this season, but will at least bring some size and grit to reinforce the Flyers’ forward corps for their road trip.

In Ersson, the Flyers add a third goalie to their active roster. The 23-year-old 2018 fifth-round pick has had a strong season serving as the Flyers’ number-three goalie. At the AHL level, he’s played in 26 games and boasts a 15-10-1 record, a 2.58 goals-against-average, and a .911 save percentage.

In the NHL, Ersson has won five of his six starts with strong overall numbers: a 2.37 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage. While teams typically don’t like to carry three goaltenders, it’s possible this recall is designed to give the Flyers a chance to use a contest on this four-game road trip to further evaluate Ersson.

The final move, putting MacEwen on injured reserve, comes as no surprise. The forward underwent surgery to repair a broken jaw in late January, and was given a five-week timeline to return to the ice. His placement on injured reserve frees a roster spot for the Flyers to work with, allowing them to bring extra bodies on their road trip.

MacEwen is on an expiring $925k AAV deal and will be eligible for restricted free agency this summer. He became an NHL regular with Philadelphia last season after he was claimed off of waivers from the Vancouver Canucks, and he ended up skating in 75 contests, where he registered three goals, nine points, and 110 penalty minutes.
