Montreal Canadiens Send Cayden Primeau To AHL
Oct 18: The Canadiens have now swapped them back, recalling Schueneman and sending Primeau to the AHL.
Oct 17: The Montreal Canadiens won’t have Jake Allen available for tonight’s game as he is away from the team on parental leave, meaning it’s Sam Montembeault‘s net against the Pittsburgh Penguins. His backup will be Cayden Primeau, recalled from the minor leagues today. Corey Schueneman has been sent down to make room.
Montembeault allowed three goals on 29 shots in his first appearance of the season on Saturday night, losing to the Washington Capitals in the process. The 25-year-old netminder appeared 38 times for the Canadiens last season and is still looking for his first season with a save percentage over .900. He’s at .892 for his career, not quite what Montreal is looking for as Martin St. Louis and the rest of the squad tries to remain competitive.
In fact, Allen’s absence will shine a light on the position for the Canadiens, which remains quite thin with Carey Price out due to injury. Montembeault’s .892 is actually higher than Primeau’s .874 to this point in the NHL, though the latter’s is in just 18 appearances. The young netminder hasn’t been able to quite replicate the dominance he had at Northeastern, and was shelled for six goals on 38 shots in his AHL debut this season.
Primeau represents the only other goaltender in the organization signed to an NHL contract, meaning if someone suffers an injury, the team will have to scramble to find another option.
Frank Nazar To Undergo Surgery
Just as Kirby Dach makes his first real impact for the Montreal Canadiens, scoring an overtime winner against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the player the Chicago Blackhawks got for him is going under the knife. Frank Nazar, the prospect that Chicago selected with the 13th overall pick this year, a pick acquired on draft day in exchange for Dach, will have surgery to fix a lower-body injury and could potentially miss the entire college hockey season, according to Scott Powers of The Athletic.
Powers’ information comes from Michigan interim head coach Brandon Naruato, who explained that Nazar was already injured when he arrived at school and will be out until at least February. The Wolverines will not rush back their freshman recruit, with Naurato explaining that he won’t be back until he’s 100 percent healthy.
Nazar, 18, is a brilliant offensive talent that was picked with the Blackhawks’ second of three first-round picks. Kevin Korchinski (7th overall), Nazar (13th), and Sam Rinzel (25th) lead an impressive 11-player draft class that has the potential to drive the rebuild timeline in Chicago. Eight of the picks were in the first 90 selections, and players like Nazar have high hopes for their star potential.
Missing an entire development year at this point can be devastating to the development of a prospect. While Nazar will still be included in team activities and will benefit from the world-class facilities at Michigan, missing out on this much game action at his age can severely limit his ceiling. We’ll have to wait and see what happens for Nazar, but it’s not a great start for the Chicago draft class.
Alex Vlasic Sent To AHL
Alex Vlasic hadn’t actually made it into a game yet for the Chicago Blackhawks, and he’ll have to wait a little while longer. The young defenseman has been assigned to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, with Jake McCabe on the verge of returning to action.
Vlasic, 21, signed out of Boston University last season and stepped immediately into the NHL, playing 15 games with the Blackhawks down the stretch. The 6’6″ defender has never had much offensive upside but is a potential shutdown option for the team as they continue their rebuild. His reach and skating ability allow him to control the rush easily and break up plays in front of the net, though he’ll have to do it in Rockford for the next little while.
It’s very obvious that the Blackhawks don’t want to rush their top prospects up to the NHL during this tank season. The team has just three players – Mackenzie Entwistle, Philipp Kurashev, and Alec Regula – left on the roster who are under the age of 24. Most of their group is 27 or older, racking up playing time in an attempt by the Blackhawks to flip as many pieces at the deadline as possible.
Vlasic will get his chance, there is little doubt of that, it just might not come this season. The organization is committed to creating a winner at the AHL level, meaning it might be a full minor league season for the hulking defender.
Evgeny Kuznetsov To Have Hearing With Department Of Player Safety
We could have our first suspension of the regular season, as Evgeny Kuznetsov of the Washington Capitals will have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety later today. The incident in question was a high stick on Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kyle Burroughs, as he got to his feet following a scoring chance.
As Kuznetsov drives across the net with the puck, Burroughs moves across the crease and collides with the Capitals forward. As they are getting up, Kuznetsov delivers a forceful, two-handed swing that appears to connect with the Canucks defender’s face.
Not only does the video evidence look bad, but Kuznetsov also has a history of supplementary discipline, including a fine for high-sticking just last season. His only suspension, back in 2019, was for off-ice conduct that will likely not be taken into account. Still, given he has two on-ice fines and was only given a minor penalty, a suspension, in this case, seems likely.
AHL Shuffle: 10/17/22
After an unusual Sunday with no games on the schedule, NHL action is back tonight. Tonight’s games feature a Sidney Crosby appearance in Montreal with the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the Canadiens, Nick Ritchie back in his old stomping grounds as the Arizona Coyotes visit the Toronto Maple Leafs, and a matchup of exciting Central Division foes as the Winnipeg Jets visit the Dallas Stars. With all of the action around the NHL this evening, it doesn’t put a stop to the off-ice news around the hockey world. We’ll keep an eye on all of that here.
- The Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, have reassigned goaltender Olof Lindbom to the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen. Lindbom, a second-round pick of the Rangers in 2018, is playing in his first North American season after spending his entire career-to-date in his native Sweden.
- After having defenseman Daniil Miromanov assigned to them from the Vegas Golden Knights, the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights assigned goaltender Isaiah Saville to the Savannah Ghost Pirates of the ECHL. Saville, a fifth-round pick of the Golden Knights in 2019, recently finished up a three-year stint at the University of Nebraska-Omaha before turning pro at the end of last year, where he got into eight games with Henderson.
- The AHL’s Utica Comets have assigned forward Xavier Parent to the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL. Not drafted by an NHL team, the 21-year-old Parent finished up his QMJHL career in 2021-22. After several seasons with modest point totals, Parent broke out in his final year of junior, recording 106 points in just 65 games with the Sherbrooke Phoenix.
- The San Jose Barracuda of the AHL have loaned defenseman Billy Constantinou to the Wichita Thunder, their ECHL affiliate. Already a journeyman at just 21-years-old, Constantinou played for three different teams in his three-year OHL career before turning pro for the 2021-22 season. In 2021-22, the defenseman bounced between four different teams at the AHL and ECHL levels.

Evening Notes: Muzzin, Brown, Utica
Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin left the game earlier this evening with a neck injury and will not return, the team announced. The injury appeared to occur after Muzzin and Arizona Coyotes forward Clayton Keller came together in an awkward collision in the corner, Muzzin tumbling to the ice, leaving gingerly. It’s unclear how severe the injury is and whether or not Muzzin will miss any additional time after tonight.
Being without the veteran defenseman would be another tough injury break for the Maple Leafs, who already lost goaltender Matt Murray to an abdominal injury this weekend. The silver lining with Murray hitting LTIR was that it allowed the cap-tight Maple Leafs to recall three players, including defenseman Victor Mete. If Muzzin were to miss time, but not enough to warrant a trip to LTIR, Toronto still has just south of $1.6MM in LTIR to utilize, meaning they could recall another player.
- Also done for the night is Washington Capitals forward Connor Brown, who suffered a lower-body injury, said the team. Brown was the recipient of a big hit from Vancouver Canucks defenseman Noah Juulsen. According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, Brown immediately grabbed at his right knee before leaving the ice without putting any weight on it. For the Capitals, who are carrying 14 forwards and have roughly $2MM remaining in LTIR space they can utilize, managing their roster should Brown miss any bit of time won’t be the challenge it has been for other teams this season, but that of course doesn’t account for the talent Brown himself brings to the lineup. Through three-plus games this season, Brown had yet to register a point, but did have 39 points over 64 games last season with the Ottawa Senators.
- An interesting situation in the AHL tonight, as a local power outage forced the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Utica Comets game to be paused with 2:43 remaining in the second period. Crews attempted to restore power to the arena, however not too long after, the AHL announced the game would be suspended and made up at a later date. Odd as the situation may be, it wasn’t too long ago that a 2021 preseason game between the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils had to be cancelled just minutes before puck drop after a power outage at the Prudential Center. Ironically, Utica is New Jersey’s AHL affiliate.
Edmonton Oilers Recall Markus Niemelainen, Loan Brad Malone To AHL
Earlier this evening, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they have recalled defenseman Markus Niemelainen from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL and in turn, loaned forward Brad Malone to Bakersfield. This gives Edmonton an active roster with twelve forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies now, two less players than the 23-man limit.
The swapping of players did appear expected, with The Athletic’s Daniel Nugent-Bowman reporting that expectation yesterday. Operating with 21 of 23 skaters is a challenge for any team, but does allow the Oilers, who are currently using $7.103MM out of $7.117MM of available LTIR, to stay cap compliant. Having the extra player on the roster is of course some element of insurance, one that the Florida Panthers for example, are without, leading them to dress only 17 skaters this evening. To that point, having that 19th skater be a defenseman is key in the event another Oilers defenseman were to come down with injury. Should that happen, Niemelainen could seamlessly slide into the lineup. But, had it been Malone in that situation, the team would be forced to play a forward on defense, or go with an uncomfortable thirteen forwards and five defensemen lineup.
Malone has played in both of Edmonton’s games to date this season, failing to record a point. He played in just eight games for the Oilers last season, but had a solid 39 points in 52 games for Bakersfield. Should Malone once again become a regular member of their lineup, they should be able to count on strong production from their long-time forward.
Niemelainen, like Malone, has played in two games this season, though both with Bakersfield, recording an assist in the process. The hulking 6’6″ defenseman made his NHL debut the Oilers last season, tallying just one point in 20 games. With the call-up, the 24-year-old could get an opportunity to earn more NHL minutes and continue his development at this level.
Injury Updates: Montour, Timmins, DeBrusk, Edler
Just ahead of their game this evening, the Florida Panthers announced that defenseman Brandon Montour would not play. Per the team announcement, Montour is suffering from an upper-body injury. It’s unclear exactly how Montour suffered the injury; the defenseman has played in each of the team’s first two games this season, playing 24:56 opening night and 21:44 in Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.
An interesting wrinkle in this is, because the Panthers have had to carry a light roster due to their position against the salary cap, they will not be replacing Montour in the lineup. Instead, the team will run with 17 skaters – twelve forwards and five on defense. Considering teams only need 18 skaters and a pair of goaltenders to field a full team, it would seem practical for a team in such a cap situation to only carry 18 players on the roster, however a situation like the one Florida faces this evening is a prime example of why that strategy could cause issues down the line.
- Arizona Coyotes defenseman Conor Timmins will miss tonight’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs with an upper-body injury, says the team. Fortunately for Timmins, who missed significant time last season due to injury, it appears he is only day-to-day.
- Jake DeBrusk will make his return to the Boston Bruins lineup this evening after missing Boston’s last game. The winger was injured in the team’s opening night game against the Washington Capitals after playing just 11:06. Given Boston’s slate of injury issues, especially to winger Brad Marchand, getting the offensive-minded forward back in the lineup will be key to staying in contention while the team’s stars recover. DeBrusk will be taking the place of forward Jakub Lauko in the lineup. The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa was the first to report DeBrusk had re-entered the lineup.
- Per the Los Angeles Kings, defenseman Alex Edler will not play in tonight’s game against the Detroit Red Wings. Edler was originally expected to be in the lineup, but took a puck to the face during warmups. The veteran defenseman will be replaced by Sean Walker. No update is available yet on how severe the injury is.
Sammy Blais Returns To New York Rangers Lineup
New York Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant said today that forward Sammy Blais will be in the lineup tonight when the Rangers host the Anaheim Ducks. It will be Blais’ first NHL game since suffering a torn ACL on November 14, 2021.
Gallant also said that forward Vitali Kravtsov is close to returning from his upper-body injury suffered in the season opener. He skated with the team but hasn’t yet been cleared to return, according to Gallant. Ryan Carpenter, also out with an upper-body injury, skated today but remains out against the Ducks and is day-to-day.
Blais is expected to skate on a line with Jimmy Vesey and Filip Chytil in his return.
Acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Pavel Buchnevich, Blais did have just four assists in 14 games last season before going down with the injury. His hard-nosed, responsible style quickly endeared him to Rangers fans, though, and he’ll be a welcome sight in the lineup.
Vegas Golden Knights Assign Daniil Miromanov To AHL
The Vegas Golden Knights have assigned defenseman Daniil Miromanov to the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights, according to their affiliate team.
Miromanov, who played in 11 games with the Golden Knights last year, missed the team’s training camp after undergoing offseason surgery. Now healthy, he’ll return to Henderson, where the 25-year-old Russian had a stellar 40-point campaign in 53 games.
A versatile player who can play both defense and forward, Miromanov is one of the team’s best call-up options, especially considering their thinned-out organizational depth. He still does not require waivers after signing a two-year contract extension this past offseason.
Vegas acquired Miromanov as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2021, signing him to a one-year entry-level contract after he had 29 points in 58 games with HK Sochi in the KHL. Miromanov returns to Henderson as the team’s top defender
