Latest On Canadiens And Rangers Trade Speculation

November 1, 2017 at 7:44 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

While there has been a lot of speculation following the Rangers having four scouts (including former GM Glen Sather) watching Monday’s game between the Canadiens and Senators, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported in an appearance on TSN 690 (audio link) that there doesn’t appear to be any imminent trade on the horizon:

“You’ve got to be a little bit careful too and not jump to the conclusion that just because they were there that something is imminent.  Last I heard, and again it’s always subject to change with one phone call, but it wasn’t front-burner, pot-boiling, ready to make a transaction as much as it was two teams that are on really hard times talking to each other about some possibilities.”

Both teams have been viewed as underachievers through the first month of the season.  Montreal sits sixth in the Atlantic Division while New York moved into a tie for seventh in the Metropolitan Division with their victory against Vegas on Tuesday night.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported early Tuesday that Canadiens winger Andrew Shaw is someone that the Rangers have interest in as his ability to play center (he has spent a bit of time there in the past), as well as his physical style of play, have endeared him to management.  Last week, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman noted that Shaw is someone that Montreal GM Marc Bergevin could be interested in moving while perhaps retaining part of his contract to get a deal done.  The 26-year-old is signed through 2021-22 with a $3.9MM cap hit, certainly a sizable contract for anyone to consider trading for.

Alex Galchenyuk has been a subject of trade speculation for a while now even with the three-year, $14.7MM contract he signed over the summer.  Brooks called him someone that could be of interest to the Rangers while McKenzie noted during his radio appearance that there have been discussions about him between the two teams.

While the two Montreal players have been identified as players that would be of interest to the Rangers and GM Jeff Gorton, it remains to be seen who or what they would be willing to give up.  The Canadiens’ defensive concerns have been well-documented but New York has had some concerns on that end as well which likely rules that out.  With the Rangers having the ability to add a player making just shy of $3MM as of today (per CapFriendly), they would have to clear out some money in order to get a deal done.

While it certainly doesn’t sound like any sort of trade is near completion for now, it will be interesting to see if talks pick up if one or both team carry over their struggles into November and beyond.

New York Rangers Could Be Sellers This Year

November 1, 2017 at 1:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

When the New York Rangers selected Lias Andersson seventh-overall in the 2017 NHL draft, it was a long time coming. The Rangers hadn’t selected in the first 40 picks for four consecutive drafts, and had just one top-10 pick (Dylan McIlrath at #10 in 2010) in the previous twelve. To get Andersson, they’d had to move Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta, two extremely important pieces of their 2016-17 season. They had sold assets for the first time in many years, and now Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet seems to think they may not be done. In his latest “31 Thoughts” column, Friedman writes that New York is not interested in just being an average NHL team, and could be heading towards a partial rebuild with an appetite for prospects and draft picks.

"<strongSpeculation from this opening salvo will surely run rampant around the hockey world, with players like Mats Zuccarello and Ryan McDonagh both listed outside of the perceived untouchables. The Rangers have several pending unrestricted free agents and others with just one year remaining on their deal after this season, including the above mentioned duo. Zuccarello and McDonagh would be huge trade deadline additions if the Rangers don’t right the ship entirely, and with a 4-7-2 record they have an early fight on their hands for relevancy in the Metropolitan Division.

If the Rangers are truly committed to a quick rebuild led by Andersson and fellow first-round pick Filip Chytil, you have to wonder where Rick Nash will find himself playing down the stretch. The 33-year old winger has just four points through 13 games, but is carrying an incredibly low 4.3% shooting percentage that is sure to rebound to somewhere closer to his career average of 12.2%. Nash has a partial no-trade clause, but perhaps a bigger impedance for a trade is his salary. Not only does he carry a $7.8MM cap hit, but Nash is owed $8.2MM in salary this season and none of it was paid out in signing bonuses. Finding a team that has both the cap space and available real cash will be tricky, and might require the Rangers to retain some salary.

Still, the team will be one to watch all season for how they react to a poor start. They actually have quite a reasonable schedule coming up this month, without a single back-to-back situation and four instances of at least two days in a row off. If they take advantage of that, it might not look so dreary as they head into winter and really start discussing trades.

Metropolitan Notes: Vigneault, Atkinson, Johansson, Reinhart

October 29, 2017 at 4:39 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

New York Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault might not have much time left to repair the sinking ship. The New York Post’s Larry Brooks writes that he believes that Vigneault has one more game left to prove he can turn the Rangers disastrous start of 3-7-2 around. He will get that game Tuesday against the 8-1 Vegas Golden Knights.

While Brooks admits that it is his belief and he’s heard nothing to suggest that will happen, he points out that the team’s struggles to start the season, especially falling behind 3-0 in the first period to the equally struggling Montreal Canadiens shows that Vigneault may not be the answer. A coaching change may be the only way to breathe some life into the franchise who were heavily criticized for their efforts in thejr 5-4 loss.

Brooks also points out that the team’s poor start in first periods has been a key issue for New York. The team has been outscored 3-0 in the first two minutes of 12 games this season; 5-1 in the first three minutes of games; 6-2 in the first four minutes; 8-3 in the first six minutes; 10-4 in the first 10 minutes and 12-4 in the first 12 minutes of games. He writes this is inexcusable and is bad enough to physically allow so many early goals, but the team is also unengaged mentally the moment the puck is dropped.

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets may have to do without winger Cam Atkinson for a little while as he suffered a lower-body injury, according to The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline (subscription required). The team’s leading scorer for the past two years had a rough game, suffering a lower-body injury in the first period, a puck to his helmet during the second period and then sustained another hit to his lower body that knocked him out of the game in the third period. Portzline said an announcement won’t be made until Monday as the team didn’t practice today. Atkinson has four goals and an assist in 11 games this year. Rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois moved up to replace Atkinson for the remainder of the game.
  • Andrew Gross of Northjersey.com writes that winger Marcus Johansson is day-to-day after tweaking his lower body in pre-game warm-ups before Saturday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes. The scribe wrote that it was not a pre-existing injury, but the team choose to hold him out as a precaution. Johansson, who the Devils picked up in an offseason trade with the Washington Capitals, has been a solid contributor for New Jersey this year, having put up three goals and two assists in nine games this year.
  • NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti wonders whether the Washington Capitals might not consider claiming defenseman Griffin Reinhart, who was put on waivers this morning by the Vegas Golden Knights. At $800K and at just 23 years of age, Reinhart might be a good investment for a team that has little cap room and little blue line depth. Reinhart, the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft, could be claimed by several teams in need of depth on defense. Unfortunately, the Capitals cannot take solace that they will get a high waiver claim even though the team presently sits at 5-5. CapFriendly reported today that current waiver priority is still based on last year’s record. Priority will switch to present standings starting on Nov. 1.

Teddy Purcell, Lauri Korpikoski Sign Overseas

October 26, 2017 at 7:20 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

Two of the more notable names left without an NHL contract when the 2017-18 season began have come to terms on new deals elsewhere. Teddy Purcell, a former 65-point scorer who of late was on a PTO with the Boston Bruins, signed with the KHL’s Avangard Omsk today, the team announced. Lauri Korpikoski, fresh off a strong campaign with the Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets, somewhat surprisingly drew little attention this off-season and has now signed with the ZSC Lions of the NLA, according to a team release. The former Edmonton teammates will each look to rejuvenate their careers overseas this season.

Purcell, 32, was had a roller coaster career. The undrafted University of Maine product made a surprise jump to the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in 2007-08 after just one year of college and made an immediate impact. After being swapped for Jeff Halpern early in his career, Purcell took off with the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring 51 points his first season and 65 the next. His scoring continued, but that didn’t stop the Bolts from trading him to the Edmonton Oilers, who in turn traded him to the Florida Panthers less than two years later. During this time, Purcell had continued to be a consistent scorer no matter where he landed. So, when Purcell given nearly no attention in the free agent market last year and ended up back in L.A. and soon after buried in the minors, it came as a shock to many. This time around, no one was surprised when Purcell was unable to turn his tryout in Boston into a contract, but the fact remains that there is still no evidence that Purcell ever stopped being a solid play-making forward. Now in Russia, Purcell has the potential to light it up with Avangard. Don’t be surprised if the swift winger scores early and often in the KHL and catches the eye of the Canadian Olympic team.

As for Korpikoski, his off-season went much like Purcell’s last year. 20 points in 60 games aren’t eye-popping numbers, but it was a pleasantly surprising season for Korpikoski in Dallas. The two-way forward had never been a big producer – his career high 40 points came back in 2010-11 with the Phoenix Coyotes, a team on which he was pressed into a top-six role due to a lack of talent – but Korpikoski had made a career out of his well-rounded game. A 2004 first-round pick of the New York Rangers, the now-31-year-old was a hard-working and reliable player for long stretches in New York and Arizona, but a drop-off in production in the desert and a subsequent trade to the Edmonton Oilers in 2015 looked like the beginning of the end. Yet, the Stars took a gamble last summer and it paid off with a sold effort from Korpikoski and a trade return of young defenseman Dillon Heatherington from Columbus at the deadline. However, the renewed interest never came and Korpikoski has had to settle for Switzerland. With ZSC, Korpikoski will join a talented NLA team and will get a chance to skate alongside NHL veterans like Robert Nilsson and Drew Shore. While Finland is in better shape for the upcoming Winter Games than the U.S. or Canada, don’t count out the possibility of the veteran Finn winger from getting the call to go to Pyeongchang as well.

Potential Out Clause For Alexei Bereglazov

October 26, 2017 at 2:21 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

When reports came out this summer that New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal would have to win his job in camp, many people immediately assumed he would not be able to. After all, he now had to battle it out with several younger, more mobile options. The Rangers had brought in Neal Pionk, Anthony DeAngelo, and Russian defender Alexei Bereglazov to compete for spots. Instead, none of the three are on the roster as the Rangers get set to take on the Arizona Coyotes tonight, and Bereglazov especially is an interesting case.

Bereglazov signed a two-year, entry-level contract this summer with the team after showing some improved offensive ability. The 23-year old KHL veteran has yet to see any action with the Rangers, instead suiting up for their AHL affiliate in Hartford. His deal always had a reported European Assignment Clause, meaning he could return to Russia should he find himself in the minors, and now Yevgeni Belousov of Sport-Express has been told a decision could be made at the beginning of November. That news comes from the VP of Bereglazov’s former team in Magnitogorsk, and shouldn’t be taken to mean that the defender has any problem with staying in North American and playing in the AHL. He hasn’t indicated anything like that, and it comes with no surprise that Magnitogorsk would want him back.

There doesn’t seem to be an opening at the NHL level right now, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be at any moment.  While DeAngelo has seemingly blown his latest chance at a full-time role, a Bereglazov recall could be just a single injury away. It’s also interesting to note that just today Magnitogorsk re-signed Chris Lee, the veteran defender who had been trying to earn a job in the NHL. Since he’s expected to log big minutes in the KHL once again, perhaps it is a little less appealing of a destination to the young Russian.

Adam Cracknell Clears Waivers

October 25, 2017 at 11:11 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

  • Adam Cracknell has cleared waivers for the New York Rangers, something the Dallas Stars couldn’t accomplish earlier this month. The Rangers snagged him and inserted him into the bottom-six, but his role there wasn’t long-lived. After a relatively excellent season a year ago, Cracknell has been held scoreless through the first five games of the season (one for Dallas, four for New York) and now finds himself in limbo. Assigned to the AHL, he’ll join a Hartford Wolf Pack team that is spinning their wheels with a 3-3-1 record.

Boo Nieves Called Up By New York Rangers

October 24, 2017 at 4:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Just after sending Anthony DeAngelo down to the AHL and waiving Adam Cracknell, the New York Rangers have decided on who they’ll bring up to fill the roster spot. Cristoval “Boo” Nieves is on his way up to the team, something many fans wanted right from the start of the season.

Nieves will likely get into the lineup right away when the team takes on the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night, but will have to make quite an impact to turn around the Rangers’ recent fortunes. The team has just two wins on the season and one in their last seven games, while finding it difficult to score on a regular basis. Nieves did contribute offensively at the University of Michigan, but hasn’t found quite the same playmaking ability in the AHL. Through 55 games in the minor league, he has 26 points.

What Nieves will bring, is a big body to slot into the center position for New York. A weak spot after trading away Derek Stepan in the offseason, the depth down the middle has been suspect all year for the Rangers. While Mika Zibanejad does have seven points through ten games, just two of those have come at even strength, where he is being relied upon for nearly 19 minutes a night. If Nieves can find a bit of success, perhaps some of the pressure can be taken off the top two lines and a more balanced attack can be found for the team.

Anthony DeAngelo Sent Back To AHL

October 24, 2017 at 1:18 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The New York Rangers have made another roster move today, sending Anthony DeAngelo down to the AHL. The 22-year old defenseman had played eight games for the Rangers this season, but will now have to ply his trade at the minor league level.

It’s a curious move for the Rangers, opening another roster spot after waiving Adam Cracknell this morning. The team was carrying eight defensemen and dressing seven of them, using DeAngelo as basically a powerplay specialist. Moving forward, the team is likely to go back to dressing 12 forwards, though it’s not clear who they will all be. The team recently sent Filip Chytil down to the AHL, and find themselves in a disappointing 2-6-2 hole to start the year. Waiving Cracknell is one thing, but perhaps another move is needed to give the team some jump.

Whether that move is imminent is unclear, so for now one must assume that the team will insert Paul Carey back into the lineup when they take on the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night. That may not make Rangers’ fans happy, as the 29-year old forward has been held scoreless through his five games this season.

For DeAngelo, this isn’t the first time he’s failed to live up to expectations. Traded first from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and then again this summer from the Arizona Coyotes, the offensive blueliner can’t seem to put it all together at the NHL level. In 47 career games he has 15 points, but is also a -17. While possession statistics may paint a different picture for his overall impact, coaching staffs clearly don’t trust him to log a regular shift.

Niemi Claimed By Florida; Cracknell On Waivers

October 24, 2017 at 11:04 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The waiver period from yesterday has come to a close, and Antti Niemi has been claimed by the Florida Panthers. Niemi was placed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday after allowing seven goals in his most recent game. Eric Fehr, Jordan Schroeder and Colin McDonald all cleared. The New York Rangers have also placed Adam Cracknell on waivers today.

Roberto Luongo is currently on injured reserve for the Panthers with a hand injury, meaning Niemi will serve as the backup for James Reimer until he’s ready to return. It’s interesting that the team would make a claim for an established backup, and likely indicates that the injury will keep Luongo out for at least a little while. The team had Harri Sateri up with the NHL club on emergency loan, but should be sent back to the AHL later today.

For Fehr, Schroeder and McDonald, clearing waivers doesn’t necessarily mean a trip to the AHL. The Maple Leafs had a scare with James van Riemsdyk last night when he went awkwardly into the boards, and though he didn’t miss a shift there is no rush to move Fehr out. The veteran forward’s spot could be used to bring back Calle Rosen or call up another young forward, but placing him on waivers could have also been an attempt to increase his trade value.

Schroeder was likely ticketed for the AHL until an ankle injury sidelined Lukas Sedlak in practice yesterday. Today, Schroeder is practicing with the team in the absence of Alexander Wennberg (maintenance), and could stay with the club to provide fourth-line depth. As expected, Zac Dalpe moved into that role today but is far from a guarantee to fill it long-term.

After starting the year on season-opening injured reserve, McDonald is likely headed for the AHL as the Flyers don’t have an obvious opening for him. The only two forwards who are waiver-exempt are Nolan Patrick and Travis Konecny, neither of which are going anywhere soon unless the team changes their mind on keeping Patrick past the nine game threshold—he’s currently at eight.

Cracknell is on waivers for the second time already this year, after being claimed by the Rangers from Dallas earlier this month. In four games for New York, he’s been held pointless in seven and a half minutes of ice time per night. Never expected to be much more than fourth line depth, Cracknell could still serve that purpose if he clears tomorrow.

5 Key Stories: 10/16/17 – 10/22/17

October 22, 2017 at 7:33 pm CDT | by natebrown Leave a Comment

It wasn’t as busy during the beginning of the week, but the end certainly had its fair share of big news. Injuries to key players dominated the week’s notes.

  1. Red Wings finally come to terms with Andreas Athanasiou, trade Riley Sheahan and Ryan Sproul –  The Andreas Athanasiou-Red Wings stalemate came to an end after a phone conference with Wings brass thawed the tension. In order to make room, general manager Ken Holland dealt Riley Sheahan to Pittsburgh and flipped defenseman Ryan Sproul to the Rangers.

2.  Bobby Ryan shelved for one month with a broken finger – As one commenter wrote, the snake bitten Ryan broke his right index finger during the Senators’ 6-3 win over rival Toronto.  This yet another finger injury for the forward, who fought through a number of injuries last season.

3. Brian Boyle is cleared for full practice: Expected to be a critical piece for the Devils this season, Boyle was out due to a form of bone cancer, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.  Though there is no timetable for his return, this is another large step for Boyle in his battle back to the ice.

4. A number of goalies suffer injuries: Tuukka Rask, Roberto Luongo, and Malcolm Subban were some of the netminders hit by injury this week. Both Subban and Marc-Andre Fleury sit on Vegas’ LTIR after it was reported that Subban would miss four weeks. Rask was diagnosed with a concussion and because of the nature of concussions, it’s unclear just how long Rask will be out. Luongo injured his right hand during the Panthers’ 4-3 loss last night.

5. Jeff Carter Out Indefinitely: The Kings lost one of their best players to a cut on his left leg, speculated to be a six-to-eight week recovery time.
