Columbus Blue Jackets Assign David Jiricek, Daniil Tarasov To AHL

November 6, 2022 at 4:49 pm CDT | by John Gilroy 1 Comment

More roster moves coming out late this afternoon, the latest features the Columbus Blue Jackets, who announced they’ve assigned defenseman David Jiricek and goaltender Daniil Tarasov to the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. The team has not announced any corresponding moves. Columbus was under the salary cap and with the maximum 23 players on their roster.

Sending the pair down when they didn’t technically need to might be confusing for some, however the move may have less to do with the Blue Jackets or individual player performance and more to do with development strategy. Jiricek, the sixth-overall selection in this year’s NHL Draft, played in just two games with Columbus, the last coming a week ago on October 30th. Similarly, Tarasov was the third goalie on the Blue Jackets roster behind Elvis Merzlikins and the recently-activated Joonas Korpisalo. At 23-years-old, after struggling in five games to start the season, and also not having played since last Sunday, sending Tarasov, as well as Jiricek, to the AHL where they can both play regularly, makes the most sense.

Tarasov has seen limited action since coming over to North American during the 2020-21 season, and based on that performance, still needs time to develop. In five games at the NHL level this season, Tarasov has a 3.57 goals-against average and .893 save-percentage. The goaltender played in just 15 games all of last season, four of which were with Columbus.

Jiricek, 18, came into this season with hopes of making the Blue Jackets roster, and though he has made his NHL debut, it is likely the organization would prefer to expose the young defenseman to a bigger role, which they cannot currently give him. Allowing Jiricek to play that role in the AHL and learn how to perform there may be more beneficial to his overall development than to play sparingly at the NHL level. Through five AHL games, Jiricek has four points, all assists.

Upper-Body Injury For Jakub Voracek

November 5, 2022 at 6:02 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

  • It has been a rough start to the season for the Blue Jackets and things aren’t getting any better as the team announced (Twitter link) that they were without winger Jakub Voracek for the second half of their back-to-back set against Colorado due to an upper-body injury. The veteran is off to a bit of a quiet start this season with just a goal and five assists through his first 11 games.  Voracek is being listed as day-to-day.

Columbus Blue Jackets Activate Nick Blankenburg

November 4, 2022 at 10:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Ahead of today’s game in Finland, the Columbus Blue Jackets have activated Nick Blankenburg from injured reserve. The move meant Gavin Bayreuther has been assigned to the AHL, though he took morning skate with the team overseas so won’t be playing for the Cleveland Monsters tonight.

Blankenburg, 24, missed several games with an elbow injury and will go directly back into the lineup. He was skating next to Vladislav Gavrikov on the second pair yesterday. The undrafted defenseman had two points in his first three games of the season before exiting early in number four, and appears to be a nice find for the club. Signed out of the University of Michigan, he now has five points in his career and will look to build on that number in Finland today.

The club takes on the Colorado Avalanche as part of the Global Series, allowing Patrik Laine to suit up in his hometown of Tampere. Bayreuther, 28, won’t get a chance to experience that and will have to go back to the Monsters when they return to North America. The minor league veteran was scoreless in his one NHL appearance this season.

Columbus Blue Jackets Recall Joonas Korpisalo

October 30, 2022 at 9:34 am CDT | by John Gilroy Leave a Comment

After assigning him to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters on a conditioning stint 24 hours ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets have now recalled goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from Cleveland, the team announced. The team placing defenseman Nick Blankenburg on IR yesterday created the roster spot for Korpisalo, thus no corresponding move was made this morning. Interestingly though, Korpisalo’s return with no further move leaves the team with three goaltenders: Korpisalo, Elvis Merzlikins, and Daniil Tarasov.

The return of the veteran netminder couldn’t come at a better time for the Blue Jackets, who have seen Merzlikins and Tarasov both struggle in net to start the year. Korpisalo himself wasn’t much better last season prior to his season-ending surgery on March 24th, but if he can return to the numbers he was able to produce earlier in his career, it could be a breath of fresh air for Columbus. It will be interesting to see how the Blue Jackets handle this situation, as they currently carry three goaltenders. Of note though, Tarasov is waiver-exempt.

Korpisalo’s lone conditioning start came last night in Cleveland’s 4-2 victory over the Syracuse Crunch, which featured a 38 save performance from the netminder. Although it was an AHL contest, it was the 28-year-old’s first game back since a March 22nd appearance against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a 38-for-40 performance is surely intriguing. Should Columbus be able to expect more of the same, it could be a game-changer for the struggling Blue Jackets.

Columbus Blue Jackets Place Nick Blankenburg On IR, Activate Joonas Korpisalo

October 29, 2022 at 10:54 am CDT | by John Gilroy Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced a pair of roster moves this morning, placing defenseman Nick Blankenburg on IR retroactive to October 23rd and in a related move, goaltender Joonas Korpisalo has been activated off of IR. Korpisalo will not immediately join Columbus, however, as he’s been assigned to the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL on a conditioning assignment. Columbus next plays tomorrow afternoon in Newark against the New Jersey Devils. Cleveland plays this evening, but doesn’t play again until next weekend.

Blankenburg, 24, suffered an upper-body injury last Sunday in a game against the New York Rangers, appearing to injure his left arm. The defenseman tried to play through the injury, but left early in the second period. Blankenburg is considered day-to-day, and was practicing today in a non-contact jersey, reports BlueJackets.com’s Jeff Svoboda. Undrafted by an NHL team, Blankenburg spent four seasons at the University of Michigan, capped off by a stellar senior season in which he scored 14 goals to go with 15 assists in just 38 games. After the season, he turned pro, signing with Columbus and making his NHL debut on April 13th of this year. To date, he has two goals and three assists in 11 career games, all with Columbus.

Korpisalo has yet to play this season while recovering from season-ending hip surgery on March 24th. The 28-year-old has made his mark with the Blue Jackets, establishing himself as one of the league’s best backup goaltenders. However, he did struggle last year, recording an .877 save-percentage and 4.10 goals-against average in 22 games. Despite the struggle, Columbus showed their faith in the veteran by signing him to a one-year $1.3MM contract extension this spring. Once healthy, Korpisalo can look to rebound from his poor performance and injury issues of 2021-22 while fighting for playing time alongside starting netminder Elvis Merzlikins, who has struggled himself to start this season.

Columbus Blue Jackets Recall David Jiricek

October 26, 2022 at 4:26 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Another top pick from the 2022 draft is about to get his chance at the NHL level. The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled David Jiricek from the minor leagues, after Adam Boqvist was moved to injured reserve. Boqvist suffered a broken foot in last night’s game and will miss six weeks.

Jiricek, 18, was the sixth-overall pick this summer, and has quickly shown that he may be ready for a level higher than the AHL. In five games with the Cleveland Monsters, the 6’3″ defenseman has four assists and has registered 12 shots on goal. Known for his size, reach, and blistering slapshot, the Czech defender already does have plenty of experience at the professional level.

He made his debut in the Czech league in 2020 and played two full seasons for Plzen HC before being selected by the Blue Jackets. He also played for Czechia at the World Championship earlier this year, helping his country to a bronze medal in a tournament filled with NHL talent.

While that offensive production from the AHL may not immediately follow him to the Blue Jackets, Jiricek’s future is extremely bright. He is a natural defender who is rarely out of position, already has enough strength to play against opponents much older than him, and can show a mean streak that can be intimidating in front of his own net.

Quite different from the player who he is replacing, it’s not clear exactly what kind of role Jiricek will get in Columbus. Boqvist, 22, is known best for his ability to jump into the rush (or start it himself) and was quarterbacking the team’s second powerplay unit. His playing time at even strength had actually been the second-lowest among Columbus defenders this year, meaning there won’t be a ton of minutes to carve up, especially if the powerplay time goes to someone else.

Like other teenagers, it is also important to remember the entry-level contract rules for Jiricek. He will not burn the first year of his deal until he plays in his tenth game, meaning this could be a short-term tryout to see if he can hack it in the NHL. That said, if he shows he is ready, there will be some interesting decisions to be made when Boqvist is healthy again.

Justin Danforth To Undergo Surgery

October 25, 2022 at 11:48 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets have officially activated Patrik Laine, but buried in the press release is some less positive news. Justin Danforth is headed for surgery next Monday to repair a torn labrum. He is expected to make a full recovery in six months, meaning he’ll be out for most of the season, if not all of it.

Danforth, 29, was a great story of perseverance, working his way up through the ECHL, European leagues, and the AHL before making his NHL debut last season at the age of 28. He even scored ten goals and 14 points in 45 games and earned himself a full-time spot with the team this year. He was off to a good start too, with two goals and three points in his first five games, before being injured early in his sixth.

Now, facing a recovery period of six months, his career is in jeopardy once again. The undersized forward did sign a two-year, one-way contract this summer, but there’s no telling what his game will be like when he comes back from this long absence. Hopefully, he can go right back to the mix of in-your-face energy and skill that he had brought to this point, offering positional and playstyle versatility.

Layoffs this long can quickly turn into opportunities for other players though and with so many talented young forwards in the Blue Jackets system, there’s no guarantee that Danforth returns to an open spot. All he can do now is work on his rehab and try to come back with the same level of play that he left with.

Patrik Laine Set To Return For Columbus Blue Jackets

October 25, 2022 at 10:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets are now 3-4 on the year, after an impressive victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday. They will now start a two-game homestand starting with the Arizona Coyotes this evening and received some great news this morning. Patrik Laine is ready to get back into the starting lineup, skating with Boone Jenner and Johnny Gaudreau at this morning’s skate.

Laine, 24, was injured in the first game, less than eight minutes into his season. He had already scored, something that will happen quite a few more times this year, especially if he’s hitting the ice across from Gaudreau on a regular basis. The enigmatic winger has settled into his own in Columbus, scoring 56 points in 56 games last season and signing a four-year, $34.8MM deal to stick around.

The Metropolitan Division is wide open to start the year, with just three points separating first from seventh. Getting Laine back this quickly is a huge boost for a Columbus team that expects to contend for a playoff spot after spending so much money in the offseason. Not only was Laine extended and Gaudreau brought in, but Erik Gudbranson was given a four-year deal, Adam Boqvist was signed to a bridge contract, and Andrew Peeke was handed an extension.

If they can get rolling with their Finnish sniper back in the mix, it’ll be an even more exciting fight in the east.

Columbus Blue Jackets Recall Gavin Bayreuther

October 24, 2022 at 4:26 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

According to a team release, the Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled defenseman Gavin Bayreuther from the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.

The move comes after rookie defenseman Nick Blankenburg left last night’s game with an upper-body injury, speculated to be an injury to his left arm. The 24-year-old undrafted free agent signing out of the University of Michigan had two points through his first four games this season and had even earned a look on the team’s top pairing alongside Zach Werenski. His brief emergence pushed another young defender, Adam Boqvist, out of the lineup. Boqvist had been held off the scoresheet in three games this season and averaged just a few ticks over 16 minutes per game, though.

Bayreuther comes up from Cleveland to serve as the team’s seventh defenseman, suggesting Blankenburg may miss some time. Blankenburg has not been placed on injured reserve, but there’s no pressing need to as the team was carrying 22 out of a maximum of 23 players anyways. The 28-year-old Bayreuther has three assists in his first three games in Cleveland and is in the second year of a two-year, $750,000 cap hit deal which is a one-way contract for 2022-23. Bayreuther spent the majority of the 2021-22 season on the Jackets’ active roster, usually as a healthy scratch, registering eight assists in 43 games.

Justin Danforth Out Indefinitely With Upper-Body Injury

October 24, 2022 at 3:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The injury likely occurred on a hit from Cole Sillinger at the very beginning of yesterday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, which left Chytil on the ice for several moments. The 23-year-old had been one of the team’s best players through the first part of the year, with Vince Mercogliano of USA Today noting that he is the only regular who hasn’t been on the ice for a goal against to this point.

  • Justin Danforth is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury, though there is also no clarification on his timeline. The Blue Jackets forward left Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and missed yesterday’s tilt against the Rangers. The 29-year-old had two goals and three points in his first five games, even playing a whopping 20:23 in the second game of the year.
