Petr Mrazek To Miss At Least A Week

December 4, 2022 at 7:55 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

  • Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek will be out at least a week after suffering a groin injury in last night’s contest against the Rangers, relays Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times (Twitter link). The veteran is no stranger to dealing with groin trouble over his career although fortunately for him, this one appears to be a shorter-term issue.  The fact he’ll be out for at least a week will make him eligible to be placed on IR which would give Chicago an extra roster spot.  They had one available yesterday but used that to bring up goalie Jaxson Stauber earlier today.

Chicago Blackhawks Recall Jaxson Stauber

December 4, 2022 at 10:20 am CDT | by Ethan Hetu 3 Comments

The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled netminder Jaxson Stauber from their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.

This news comes after Chicago’s veteran starter, Petr Mrazek, suffered an injury in last night’s game against the New York Rangers.

With the team’s other veteran goalie, Alex Stalock, still sidelined with a concussion, this recall gives head coach Luke Richardson and the Blackhawks an extremely young goalie tandem, as both of his healthy netminders are 23 years old.

Stauber is in his first professional season after two successful seasons at Providence College. In six AHL games this year Stauber has an .892 save percentage.

While that’s obviously not a strong number, Stauber’s NCAA performance does indicate that he has some promise. In 37 games last season Stauber went 21-14-2 with a 2.10 goals-against-average and a .921 save percentage.

The Blackhawks are back in action again tonight, and it’s possible that Richardson turns to his new call-up. But since Arvid Soderblom played just one period of action in relief of Stalock, it seems more likely that Richardson will turn to the more experienced name in order to not simply immediately thrust Stauber into the heat of battle.

Nonetheless, this move has put the 23-year-old Stauber in a position to make his NHL debut despite having just six total professional games played on his resume.

Ian Mitchell Recalled From Rockford

December 1, 2022 at 12:20 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Dec 1: Wth Tinordi now heading to injured reserve, Mitchell is back up with the big club.

Nov 24: The Chicago Blackhawks, no longer without Seth Jones, have returned Ian Mitchell to the minor leagues. The opportunity for Mitchell was limited, and he’ll have to wait for his next NHL chance after being scratched last night.

Jones returned from a thumb injury and played more than 21 minutes for the Blackhawks in their game against the Dallas Stars, scoring a goal and recording three shots on net. All six Chicago defenders actually recorded at least one point in the 6-4 loss, with depth options like Jarred Tinordi even crossing the 18-minute mark.

In a normal situation, it might be surprising that the Blackhawks would send Mitchell back down given his obvious upside, but the team has been very careful to keep young players in Rockford this season. If the 23-year-old Mitchell was going to sit in the press box with the NHL club, they might as well give him back to the AHL so he can play in regular games. With seven other defensemen in Chicago seemingly ahead of him on the depth chart, it doesn’t make much sense to keep him up.

Jakub Pour Clears Unconditional Waivers

November 30, 2022 at 1:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Nov 30: CapFriendly reports that Pour has cleared waivers and will now have his contract terminated.

Nov 29: The Chicago Blackhawks have placed Jakub Pour on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract termination, according to Chris Johnston of NorthStar Bets. The young forward had been playing with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL.

Signed in the summer of 2021 to a two-year entry-level contract, Pour was an undrafted free agent from the Czech Republic who had caught the eye of someone in the Blackhawks organization. After struggling in his first season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL, it was down to the ECHL for him this year. More struggles have followed, with just five points in 15 games, so a mutual contract termination seems like the best thing for both parties.

This will clear the way for Pour to return to Europe, while also clearing a contract slot for the Blackhawks. He likely would not have received a qualifying offer at the end of the year, meaning this just allows him to look for another job a few months early.

Pour will become an unrestricted free agent tomorrow, should he go unclaimed.

John Marino Dealing With Upper-Body Injury

November 30, 2022 at 11:36 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After losing their winning streak in a defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs last week, the New Jersey Devils have jumped right back on the horse, taking home three more victories in recent days. The club is 19-4 on the year, and a huge part of that is due to allowing so few goals.

The Devils defense corps has been outstanding, with something of an unlikely lynchpin in newcomer John Marino. The 25-year-old has just eight points in 23 games but manages to tilt the ice in his team’s favor despite extremely tough deployment. New Jersey has outscored their opponents 21-8 at even-strength with Marino on the ice, even though he starts more shifts in the defensive zone than the offensive.

That’s why it’s such a big deal when the team announces Marino isn’t practicing today and is out with an upper-body injury. While he is considered day-to-day, it is a critical loss for the Devils.

Kevin Bahl is expected to slot into the lineup in his place should Marino be unable to go tomorrow against the Nashville Predators. Luckily, if you can call it that, the Devils do have an easier stretch coming up, with games against the struggling Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks.

Lafferty, Tinordi Out At Least A Week

November 29, 2022 at 2:00 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

  • The Chicago Blackhawks will be without Sam Lafferty and Jarred Tinordi for at least a week, according to Mark Lazerus of The Athletic. The two are dealing with back and hip injuries respectively, and didn’t practice today. Lazerus also relays an update on goaltender Alex Stalock, who is still dealing with a concussion. His progression has been slowed in recent days as he continues to feel the effects of the Casey Cizikas hit from earlier this month.

Latest On Patrick Kane

November 28, 2022 at 3:47 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 34 Comments

When Patrick Kane’s name first entered the throes of trade speculation early this year, there were as many skeptics as believers that the Chicago Blackhawks would ever move on from their franchise-defining superstar. One of the greatest American players of all time and a slam-dunk top-five Blackhawk of all time, Kane’s play has been the defining part of the most successful on-ice period in Chicago’s history.

The team is in a landslide now, though, going 2-9-4 in their past 15 games after a 4-2-0 start to the year. While this poor play was expected, maybe even intended, with the shimmering status of 2023’s top prospects, The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus believes that Kane, while he remains inextricably tied to Chicago and could quickly return as a free agent next offseason, “doesn’t seem to be having that much fun out there” and could opt for a trade to a contender at this year’s deadline.

After shattering point-per-game paces for the past four seasons, even as the quality of the team dwindled around him, Kane’s performance is taking a step back in 2022-23. The 34-year-old right wing has 16 points and just three goals through 21 games on the year, on pace for just 62 points over a full campaign. It would be a career-low for him, excluding the shortened 2012-13 season (55 points in 47 games).

The three-time Stanley Cup champion is coming up on 1,200 career points and seems to have still at least a few seasons of competitive hockey left in him. Those seasons could still come in Chicago, coming back next season with more young prospects on the NHL roster for him to work with. But with the superstar finally seeming to start his decline, a trade may be one of Kane’s last chances to play on a contending team.

Alex Stalock At Morning Skate, Still In Concussion Protocol

November 27, 2022 at 12:01 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

  • Chicago Blackhawks goalie Alex Stalock is working his way back from a concussion, as NBC Sports Chicago’s Charlie Roumeliotis reports the netminder was on the ice for morning skate. After an impressive .914 save percentage through seven games, Stalock has been in concussion protocol since sustaining an injury against the New York Islanders on November 1. It would likely mean the team sends Arvid Soderblom back to the minors, but he’s outperformed veteran Petr Mrazek (1-4-1, .885 save percentage). While a long shot, the Blackhawks could opt to waive Mrazek upon Stalock’s return.

Sam Lafferty To Miss Several Games

November 25, 2022 at 11:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

  • Sam Lafferty will be out for a few games, according to Charlie Roumeliotis of NBCS Chicago. The Chicago Blackhawks forward is dealing with an upper-body injury, leaving the door open for Boris Katchouk to re-enter the lineup. Lafferty, 27, has three goals and seven points in 19 games this season after signing a two-year, $2.3MM contract extension in the spring.

Chicago Blackhawks Activate Seth Jones

November 23, 2022 at 12:58 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Chicago Blackhawks have lost four in a row and are starting to look a lot more like the team many expected in the offseason. As the players try to turn things around, they are getting a big reinforcement tonight. Seth Jones has been activated from injured reserve and will be in the lineup against the Dallas Stars.

Jones, 28, hasn’t played in a month thanks to a thumb injury suffered while blocking a shot. The veteran had four points in his first eight games and was averaging more than 25 minutes a night.

With Jones in the lineup, the Blackhawks were actually above .500, going 4-3-1 before he was put on the shelf. After going 2-6-2 without him, they’ll try to get the ship righted and stay competitive as long as possible.

While the front office has made it clear that a complete rebuild is underway, head coach Luke Richardson and the players have still been competing as hard as possible. For a player like Jones, who is signed long-term and likely not going anywhere, accepting a lost season isn’t natural.

Still, after allowing 16 goals against in their last three, it will be a tough task for Jones and company to turn things around.
