Carolina Hurricanes Sign Griffin Mendel

The Carolina Hurricanes are in an interesting situation regarding their organizational depth. Their previous AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, made the choice to operate independently for 2023-24, leaving Carolina without a dedicated farm team at the highest minor-league level.

It hasn’t stopped Carolina from retaining some talent who spent last season in Chicago on AHL deals, however. Today, they announced the signing of defenseman Griffin Mendel to a one-year, entry-level contract worth $775K at the NHL level and $75K at the AHL level. He’s also been awarded a $15K signing bonus, bringing the cap hit of his contract to $790K.

Mendel, 24, was the only skater to play in all of Chicago’s 72 games last season, an impressive feat for a rookie. In his first full professional season, the hulking Kelowna-born defender exceeded all expectations after middling offensive production in college, posting nine goals and 19 points along with a -11 rating. That’s the highest point total Mendel has posted in a single season at any level dating back to U-15 play.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound defender is technically already a pro-league champion, appearing in one Calder Cup Playoff game for the then-champion Wolves in 2022 after signing an AHL deal at the end of the season. Before turning pro, Mendel played four college seasons with the University of Denver before transferring to Quinnipiac for a fifth and final season in 2021-22. He also attended Carolina’s training camp in 2022 on a tryout.

Although the left-shot Mendel has certainty over his financial situation next season, he doesn’t know where he’ll play yet. Carolina still doesn’t have a designated place to assign their minor-league players next season.

Mendel will be a restricted free agent next offseason, and he’ll be due a qualifying offer worth $813,750 on a two-way contract, save for the unlikely event he plays at least 60 NHL games in 2023-24.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Michael Bunting

Per multiple reports, including an initial report from The Fourth Period’s James Nichols, the Carolina Hurricanes are signing forward Michael Bunting to a three-year contract. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports it will carry a $4.5MM average annual value. The team later made the deal official.

Bunting will likely fill the role Carolina envisioned Max Pacioretty would occupy last season, missing out on the services of the top-flight scoring winger thanks to two Achilles injuries. Bunting is no Pacioretty, make no mistake, but he does have plenty of experience playing with elite players, stapled to Auston Matthews’ wing in Toronto for much of the past two seasons.

His scoring trailed off a bit in 2022-23, posting 49 points after tallying 63 in 2021-22, but he’s still scored 20-plus goals in back-to-back campaigns and provides a secondary scoring threat that Carolina sorely needs. He adds an element of aggressiveness on the forecheck that’s sure to support the scoring ability of Sebastian Aho, who could very well be his centerman on opening night.

Carolina now has five legitimate top-six wingers, which could mean Martin Necas slips back to a center-ice role between Andrei Svechnikov and Teuvo Teravainen and knocks Jesperi Kotkaniemi to the team’s bottom six. Teravainen could also fall down the lineup after a disappointing 2022-23 campaign.

Regardless, this is a solid acquisition for Carolina, who should expect between 60 and 80 goals from Bunting over the life of the deal.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Dmitry Orlov

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed arguably the top defenseman available on the free agent market, inking former Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals rearguard Dmitry Orlov to a two-year, $7.75MM AAV deal.

As a leading free agent defenseman, Orlov securing just a two-year term on his deal comes as a bit of a surprise. IF any defenseman was going to get a maximum-term seven-year deal, it would be Orlov.

But instead, he follows the lead of countryman and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov, who secured his own pricey two-year deal earlier this offseason.

Orlov is an all-situations minutes-eating top-four defenseman who averages over 20 minutes of ice time per night for his career, including this past season where he averaged over 22.

Not only is Orlov a capable defensive defenseman and a penalty-kill contributor, he’s also a valuable offensive defenseman as well.

After a mid-season trade to the Boston Bruins, Orlov scored 17 points in just 23 regular-season games as well as eight points in seven playoff games.

That put Orlov in his peak range which has been around 35 points, though his scorching hot run with the Bruins suggests there’s more offensive potential in Orlov’s game than he may have shown as a Capital.

Orlov will be turning 34 when this contract with the Hurricanes ends, meaning one has to wonder if he’ll truly be in line to cash in on a significant long-term deal. That being said, there are few better places for him to land than Carolina. Adding to incumbent left-handers Jaccob Slavin and Brady Skjei, Orlov gives the Hurricanes easily the NHL’s best left side of their defense.

He’ll be leaned upon heavily by head coach Rod Brind’Amour and be a major help to the Hurricanes’ hopes for a Stanley Cup championship, all without the long-term commitment that can bite teams in later years.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Frederik Andersen

The Carolina Hurricanes are close to keeping Frederik Andersen around, with NorthStar Bets’ Chris Johnston reporting a two-year deal. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun confirms a cap hit of $3.4MM per season.

Combined with today’s signing of Antti Raanta, the Hurricanes have now retained their entire three-goalie group from last season into this year. Seeing the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup with a stable of quality goalies the Hurricanes are looking to employ a similar strategy.

Andersen, 34 next season, has typically been Carolina’s lead netminder and has a .915 save percentage across two seasons with the Hurricanes. He came in fourth place in Vezina Trophy voting last season and shared the Jennings Trophy with Raanta, showcasing the upside he has in the right situation.

But this past year Andersen’s numbers declined, likely allowing the Hurricanes to re-sign Andersen at a pay cut from the $4.5MM he earned on his last contract.

Assuming he can have another season or two more in like with his career form, this will end up a solid investment for Carolina as they continue to work towards a goalie situation more focused on the young Kochetkov.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Antti Raanta

Netminder Antti Raanta is sticking around with the Carolina Hurricanes. TSN’s Darren Dreger says he’s signed a one-year, $1.5MM contract minutes before he would have hit unrestricted free agency.

Raanta, 34, has spent the last two seasons as a backup goalie with the Hurricanes. He’s played 55 games in that span and posted a .911 save percentage and 2.34 goals-against-average. Performance has never been the issue for Raanta, who has an impressive .918 career save percentage. Instead, it’s been availability that’s been his major issue.

Raanta has consistently struggled with injuries throughout his NHL career, Carolina included. As a result, Carolina has more recently preferred to carry three NHL-caliber goalies in order to insulate themselves from any Raanta injuries.

At a $1.5MM price tag with no extra term attached, the Hurricanes have taken one step towards rebuilding their three-goalie tandem, and while they certainly could opt to run with just Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov as their goalie tandem, it’s unlikely this deal locks them out of making any other goalie moves.

Max Pacioretty Drawing Significant Free-Agent Interest

It seems that unrestricted free agent forward Max Pacioretty is generating substantial interest on the open market after back-to-back instances of a ruptured Achilles tendon within months of each other. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports Friday the Carolina Hurricanes, for whom Pacioretty played only five games in the 2022-23 season due to the ruptures, have granted him permission to explore early negotiations elsewhere before the market opens tomorrow.

Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Jesper Fast

The Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly bringing back winger Jesper Fast, who was set to hit the free-agent market tomorrow, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

NorthStar Bets’ Chris Johnston reports that the contract is expected to be a two-year deal in the $2.4MM AAV range.

Fast, 31, has been with the Hurricanes for the past three seasons, since the team signed him away from the New York Rangers with a $2MM AAV deal.

Fast has played 208 games as a Hurricane and scored 82 points. While Fast earned stray Selke Trophy and Lady Byng Trophy votes last season and scored 34 points, Fast didn’t get any down-ballot votes this year and saw his numbers decline slightly.

He still ended the season on a solid note, though, as he scored nine points in 15 playoff games as the Hurricanes made a run to the Eastern Conference Final.

A widely respected two-way winger, Fast has been a regular face on a Hurricanes penalty kill that ranks first in the NHL across the past three years. He’s consistently scored around the 30-point range and has long been a valuable bottom-six forward.

Beyond his on-ice value, Fast brings leadership to the table, as evidenced by the fact that he served as an alternate captain in his final three seasons as a Ranger. He might not have the longest highlight reel, but there are few coaches in the NHL who wouldn’t jump at the chance to add a reliable two-way contributor such as Fast.

Now, with this extension Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour gets to keep Fast for the foreseeable future. At around a $2.4MM cap hit with just a two-year term, that’s good value for the Hurricanes and an entirely reasonable contract extension for Carolina to sign.

Shayne Gostisbehere To Test Free Agency

It’s been a busy week. There have been several significant trades, the sell-off of high-priced assets, and buyouts exercised to clear cap space. Oh yeah, and the 2023 NHL Draft, where all 32 teams added young, exciting talent to their prospect pipelines.

One thing that may have slipped under the radar was a note at the very bottom of Pierre LeBrun’s Tuesday column for The Athletic: Shayne Gostisbehere “will not be re-signing with Carolina.”

Gostisbehere, 30, finished 13th on our list of the Top 50 Unrestricted Free Agents after an interesting season. He started the year with the Arizona Coyotes, continuing to provide strong offensive production from the back end. His 31 points finished eighth in Coyotes scoring, despite only playing 52 games for the team.

A deadline deal took him from the bottom of the standings to the top, as he joined the Carolina Hurricanes to try and fix a struggling powerplay. In 23 games with Carolina, Gostisbehere added three goals and ten points, posting insane possession numbers in a sheltered role.

That sheltered situation positions Gostisbehere as such an intriguing free agent. He is not a strong defender, and takes too many risks to be trusted as a top-pairing option (at least on a contender). But few defensemen in the league can generate offensive chances as efficiently as him, and he routinely tilts the ice in his team’s favor when played in the right situation.

Since entering the league in 2015, Gostisbehere sits 17th in points from defensemen, ahead of names like Aaron Ekblad, Shea Theodore, and Josh Morrissey. Over that stretch, he ranks even higher in powerplay points, ahead of players like Morgan Rielly and Dougie Hamilton.

There is a role for Gostisbehere on a contending team, but it’s unclear how much teams will want to pay. The six-year, $27MM contract he received from Philadelphia in 2017 is probably out of the question, but it will be interesting to see how much he can secure this time.

Jesse Puljujarvi Undergoes Double Hip Surgery

NorthStar Bets’ Chris Johnston has an unfortunate injury update on 2016 fourth-overall pick Jesse Puljujarvi: he “recently underwent double hip surgery and is facing a lengthy recovery.” Johnston adds that Puljujarvi won’t be issued a qualifying offer by the Carolina Hurricanes and will hit unrestricted free agency in a few days.

This is the second significant medical setback hitting a young winger of the day, as it was recently announced that Buffalo Sabres winger Jack Quinn will miss quite some time with an Achilles injury. But while Quinn is firmly in an NHL team’s future plans, Puljujarvi is going to be looking for a new opportunity on the open market. The 25-year-old was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes last season but struggled to make an impact for head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s team. He scored just two points in 17 games and one point in seven playoff games.

Puljujarvi had his moments as an Edmonton Oiler, such as in 2021-22 when he scored 36 points in 65 games but struggled immensely early in the season with them and played his way out of a future with that organization. Since he was making $3MM against the cap his qualifying offer’s cost made it incredibly unlikely, and now we know he will indeed go unqualified.

The level of interest he garners on the open market is going to be a bit of a mystery due to this injury, which does not have a disclosed recovery timeline. Given the severity of the injury, though, it could be quite some time before we see Puljujarvi back on NHL ice.

Multiple Teams Engaging In Erik Karlsson Trade Talks

An expectedly hot trade market could soon see a rather Earth-shattering trade. Newly-crowned Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks has been on the trade block for quite some time, and he’s made it known he’d like to get dealt to a contender.

Now, we have some clarity on some teams EK65 could suit up for next season. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, and Seattle Kraken have reportedly initiated discussions with the Sharks regarding the possibility of acquiring the star defenseman, says Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. LeBrun also indicates, though, that Karlsson has not yet provided Sharks general manager Mike Grier with a list of preferred destinations, leaving the trade negotiations as an “open canvas.”

Karlsson boasts a massive $11.5MM cap hit through 2027 and has long been considered one of the most dynamic defensemen in the league. However, injuries had plagued the Swedish defenseman in recent seasons, dampening his on-ice impact. 2022-23 saw him shake off most of the rust, though, becoming the first defenseman to record 100 points in a season since Brian Leetch in 1991-92. Nevertheless, his defensive deficiencies combined with the concern for re-injury will likely involve the Sharks, and potentially a third party, retaining massive amounts of his salary.

The Maple Leafs are definitely the team who would need the most help via salary retention to get a deal done. They are slated to have around $14.75MM in cap space with defenseman Jake Muzzin headed for long-term injured reserve, but they need to fill at least five roster spots at forward and get a new contract signed for netminder Ilya Samsonov. A trade, however unlikely it may seem, could include T.J. Brodie, who’s locked in at a $5MM cap hit next season and is a UFA in 2024. Karlsson would essentially replace his spot in the lineup.

Few teams would complement Karlsson’s puck-moving style as well as Carolina. This is likely a fallback option for them if they can’t reach an extension with Brett Pesce, although it’s hard to imagine two players at further ends of the defense spectrum. One would have to wonder about the necessity of acquiring Karlsson for the ’Canes, though, as a former teammate of Karlsson’s,  Brent Burns, is already under contract through 2025, and they’re still working on acquiring Anthony DeAngelo from the Philadelphia Flyers (which, legally, can’t be completed for another few weeks for cap circumvention purposes).

As for the Kraken, the budding franchise has apparently wasted no time in trying to solidify themselves as a championship contender after winning their first playoff series this spring. They’ve got a bevy of talented forwards and a true four-line attack, but their biggest roster hole lies with a second-pairing right-shot defenseman behind shutdown stalwart Adam Larsson. They do have the cap room to make it work – their only notable expenditure this offseason will be re-signing blueliner Vince Dunn, which could cost them around $7MM per season. It still would leave them with about $13MM in cap space and very few other roster holes to fill, making this a very doable task for the Kraken with 35-50% salary retention.
