Tristan Luneau (Viral Infection) Won't Play In The World Juniors

December 23, 2023 at 2:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

  • Those two being added to the roster means that two players have to come off. Those are Predators blueliner Tanner Molendyk and Ducks defenseman Tristan Luneau who are both out due to injury.  Molendyk was dealing with a wrist issue while Luneau had missed pre-tournament games due to illness which has turned out to be a viral infection.  Molendyk was off to a nice start with WHL Saskatoon before making the team as he already has 28 points on his season in just 24 games.  Luneau, meanwhile, cracked Anaheim’s roster in training camp although playing time has been limited; he has played in seven games for the Ducks and six more while on a conditioning loan with AHL San Diego.

Ducks Activate Trevor Zegras Off IR

December 23, 2023 at 1:55 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

After welcoming back two key young players in Mason McTavish and Jamie Drysdale on Thursday, the Ducks are getting another one back tonight.  The team announced (Twitter link) that Trevor Zegras has been activated off injured reserve and will suit up against Seattle.

The 22-year-old took quite a while to re-sign with Anaheim over the offseason as it took until early October for the two sides to agree to terms on a three-year, $17.25MM contract.  As a result, he was limited to just two preseason appearances.

The lack of training camp and exhibition action certainly seemed to take its toll in the early going this season as Zegras got off to a slow start offensively, notching just one goal and one assist in a dozen games.  Meanwhile, new head coach Greg Cronin called his defensive struggles to attention.  Things got worse soon after when he suffered a lower-body injury on November 7th and he has missed 20 games since then.

With Zegras’ activation, Anaheim now actually has 24 players on its active roster, one over the maximum.  However, with the roster freeze rules in effect, the Ducks don’t have any skaters who are allowed to be sent down.  As they’re cap-compliant, they’re now temporarily permitted to be over the roster limit.

Meanwhile, the Ducks are still awaiting word on how long Leo Carlsson will be out of the lineup after he left Thursday’s game with a lower-body injury.  Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports (Twitter link) that the initial prognosis is promising and that it won’t be a season-ending injury.

Trevor Zegras Could Return Tonight

December 23, 2023 at 8:52 am CDT | by Josh Cybulski 5 Comments

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that defenseman Olli Määttä will be unavailable for tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Määttä is dealing with an upper-body injury that forced him out of last night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. There’s no word on a timetable for Määttä to return to the lineup but that could be provided in the coming days as Detroit gets set to head into the break. The Red Wings won’t be action again until Wednesday against the Minnesota Wild and an update should be provided before that time.

A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Määttä has settled into a role with the Red Wings since signing with the team as a free agent back in July 2022. Määttä had bounced around to a few teams after being traded away by the Penguins but has since found a home in Detroit. In 27 games this season, the 29-year-old has a goal and six assists and is +6 while playing almost 15 minutes a night.

In other morning notes:

  • The IIHF has announced that Team Canada forward Macklin Celebrini will not face any supplemental discipline for his boarding incident that occurred in Canada’s second pre-tournament game as they get prepared for this year’s World Junior tournament. Celebrini is projected to be the first overall selection in the 2024 NHL entry draft and would have been a huge loss for Canada had he been suspended. The 17-year-old had two assists in the first half of the game against Switzerland before he was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding. Canada plays their final pre-tournament game today against the United States and will begin the official tournament against Finland on Boxing Day.
  • NHL.com is reporting that Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras could return to the Ducks lineup tonight as they take on the Seattle Kraken. Zegras reportedly practiced yesterday on the Ducks’ top line alongside Alex Killorn and Troy Terry. The 22-year-old has missed the Ducks’ last 20 games with an upper-body injury and would presumably slide into Leo Carlsson’s spot as the top center as Carlsson is being evaluated for an injury as well. The native of Bedford, New York has had a rough start to his season as he started with just a goal and an assist in his first 12 games before going down to injury.

Leo Carlsson Undergoing Tests For Lower-Body Injury

December 22, 2023 at 4:15 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 5 Comments

  • Derek Lee of the Sporting Tribune reports standout rookie for the Anaheim Ducks, Leo Carlsson, is still undergoing tests on his right leg to determine the severity of the injury. In last night’s game against the Calgary Flames, defenseman MacKenzie Weegar awkwardly fell on Carlsson’s leg, which caused his right knee to collapse under the weight.

Anaheim Ducks Send Down Alex Stalock

December 21, 2023 at 4:33 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 2 Comments

  • Recalled only yesterday, the Anaheim Ducks have now returned goaltender Alex Stalock to their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. Given the team lines up against the Calgary Flames this evening, it likely spells the return of top goaltender, John Gibson, who was placed on the Non-Roster list only three days ago.

Anaheim Ducks Recall Alex Stalock, Send Calle Clang To AHL

December 20, 2023 at 4:21 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 3 Comments

The Anaheim Ducks have swapped backup goalies, recalling Alex Stalock on an emergency loan and sending Calle Clang to the minor leagues. Clang recently received the first NHL call-up of his career, getting his first view of the NHL when he backed up Lukas Dostal in the team’s Monday win over the New Jersey Devils.

Clang has already appeared in 12 AHL games this season, setting a 2-7-2 record and .882 save percentage. He made his debut in the league following the conclusion of the SHL’s 2022-23 season, appearing in five games with the San Diego Gulls before the end of the year. And while Clang is still an AHL rookie, he does have top-league experience, combining for 43 games in the SHL between the 2020-21 and 2022-23 seasons and managing a combined 22-15-0 record and .906 save percentage.

The Ducks will turn from a rookie of North American pros to a 14-year veteran of the leagues in Alex Stalock, who made his AHL debut with the 2009-10 Worcester Sharks. The Ducks are slated to become the fourth NHL team that Stalock has played for, with the San Diego Gulls becoming his sixth AHL team. The 36-year-old goaltender has appeared in 223 AHL games across his career, totaling a 109-86-14 record and .910 save percentage. He has also managed a 70-65-20 record and a .908 save percentage in 179 career NHL games. 63 of these games have come in the Pacific Division, with Stalock spending six seasons with the San Jose Sharks.

Stalock will back-up Dostal as long as starter John Gibson remains on the non-roster list for the birth of his child.

Anaheim Ducks Send Down Robert Hagg

December 19, 2023 at 2:31 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 4 Comments

  • According to Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune, the Anaheim Ducks have sent defenseman Robert Hagg down to their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. Originally recalled on December 10th, Hagg served as a healthy scratch for all five of the team’s games in the meantime, failing to suit up once for Anaheim this season.

Ducks Recall Calle Clang, John Gibson To Non-Roster

December 18, 2023 at 2:37 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 2 Comments

The Anaheim Ducks have announced the recall of goaltender Calle Clang from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. The move comes as former all-star netminder John Gibson was moved to the Non-Roster to attend to the birth of his child.

The 21-year-old Clang is in his second season with San Diego after dressing in five games last year. This season has been ripe with learning as the native of Olofström, Sweden has struggled through 12 games, posting a 3.76 goals-against average to go along with a 2-7-2 record and a .882 save percentage. Despite the slow start to his professional career in North America, Clang remains a promising young prospect within the Ducks organization. He was originally a third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins back in the 2020 NHL entry draft and was the central piece of the Rickard Rakell trade with the Penguins back in March 2022. The deadline deal saw Rakell head to Pittsburgh in exchange for Clang, Zach Aston-Reese, Dominik Simon and a 2022 second-round selection (Tristan Luneau).

Gibson dressed last night in the Ducks 5-1 win over the New Jersey Devils and left the game in the second period after stopping 18 of 19 shots. No word on what caused him to leave, but the Ducks are back in action tonight as they take on the Detroit Red Wings. With Gibson headed back home to celebrate the birth of his child, Clang will likely serve as the backup tonight as the Ducks look to keep it going after snapping their five-game losing streak last night.

No Suspension Coming For Ryan Strome

December 11, 2023 at 9:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

  • There will be no supplemental discipline coming to Ducks center Ryan Strome from his hit on Jets winger Kyle Connor, reports Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press (Twitter link). Strome received a major penalty on the play, one that was upheld after review.  Meanwhile, Connor was slated to undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of the injury.  Connor is off to a great start to his season with 17 goals and 11 assists in 26 games, leading Winnipeg in scoring while being tied for fourth in the NHL in goals.

Ducks Recall Robert Hagg, Tristan Luneau Loaned To Team Canada

December 10, 2023 at 7:33 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

The Anaheim Ducks have announced that they’ve recalled defenseman Robert Hagg from the AHL. Hagg has spent the bulk of the season in the AHL with the San Diego Gulls where he has dressed in 15 games and has a goal and two assists. The veteran of 338 NHL games signed a one-year deal with the Ducks on July 4th and did spend time in the NHL, however, he has yet to dress in an NHL game for the Ducks.

The 28-year-old was once a promising prospect after he was drafted in the second round of the 2013 NHL entry draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He made his debut with the Flyers back in 2016-17 and became a full-time NHLer the following year. Hagg stayed in the NHL for six full seasons but bounced around to four different organizations and often found himself to be a healthy scratch. As his career went on teams began to shelter his usage, often giving him the bulk of his starts in the offensive zone to try and set him up for success. This past offseason Hagg was able to secure a one-way NHL contract for the league minimum of $775K, however, thus far he has only seen action in the AHL.

Hagg was recalled to replace rookie defenseman Tristan Luneau who was loaned to Team Canada by the Ducks for the upcoming World Junior Championship. The 19-year-old was the Ducks’ second-round pick in 2022 and was recalled by the club back in November to make his NHL debut. So far this season in seven games, Luneau has a goal and two assists and has averaged almost 18 minutes a night in ice time.
