Buffalo Sabres Acquire Eric Robinson From Columbus

December 6, 2023 at 3:27 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley 4 Comments

4:48 p.m.: The draft pick included in the deal will only be transferred to the Blue Jackets if Robinson plays 45 NHL games this season, per CapFriendly. He’s already logged seven appearances with Columbus.

3:27 p.m.: The Sabres have made the news official, sending a 2025 seventh-round pick (originally belonging to the Predators) to Columbus in return for Robinson’s services. In a corresponding transaction, forward Brandon Biro was returned to AHL Rochester.

1:32 p.m.: The Buffalo News’ Lance Lysowski has confirmed that the Buffalo Sabres have acquired Eric Robinson from the Columbus Blue Jackets. This was originally reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Robinson, 28, is in his seventh season of NHL play, after signing with the Blue Jackets as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He’s since totaled 266 career NHL games and 82 career points. The details of the trade are not yet certain, although Lysowski reports that Robinson won’t join Buffalo for their Thursday matchup against the Boston Bruins.

Robinson has appeared in seven games with the Blue Jackets this season, scoring one goal and recording a -3. He has also played in nine AHL games and scored four points. It was Robinson’s first appearance in the AHL since 2019-20, as the veteran winger has been a fixture of Columbus’ lineup over the last four seasons. He recorded a career year in the 2021-22 campaign, scoring 10 goals and 27 points in 67 games. He followed it up with 12 goals and 24 points in 72 games last year.

Robinson is a New Jersey native who played four seasons at Princeton University from 2014 to 2018. The Nashville Predators invited Robinson to their training camp ahead of the 2015-16 season and signed a professional try-out contract with the team ahead of the 2016-17 season. He also briefly signed with Nashville’s AHL affiliate, before opting to return for his senior season, where he set a collegiate-career high of 31 points in 36 games and earned an NHL contract with Columbus.

He is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st and carries a $1.6MM cap hit this season.

Buffalo Sabres Recall Brandon Biro

November 29, 2023 at 9:08 am CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have recalled forward Brandon Biro from their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. He swaps with goaltender Devon Levi, who was reassigned from the Sabres to Rochester yesterday.

The Sabres have an upcoming two-game road trip that will take them through St. Louis and North Carolina, so adding Biro gives the club an extra forward to work with as they embark on that trip.

Biro, 25, was signed to the Sabres organization as an undrafted free agent out of the Big-10 and Penn State. He became an instant impact scorer for Rochester, potting 12 goals and 41 points in his 48-game rookie campaign.

Last season, Biro was Rochester’s top scorer on a points-per-game basis, notching 16 goals and 51 points in just 49 games. He did not play in any NHL games last year, though.

So far this season, Biro has already played in two NHL contests. He has gotten off to a strong AHL start once again, scoring six goals and 12 points in 10 games.

He also has two goals in the NHL, and the Sabres will hope that his offense can continue to translate and Biro can help them get some valuable points against two tough road opponents.

Sabres Activate, Reassign Brandon Biro

November 13, 2023 at 4:56 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have activated winger Brandon Biro from injured reserve and assigned him to the AHL’s Rochester Americans, per a team release.

Buffalo recalled Biro, 25, from Rochester on Halloween and played in two contests before exiting the lineup with an upper-body injury and landing on IR. Skating just his second career NHL game against the Flyers on November 1 (he made one appearance for the Sabres at the tail end of 2021-22), Biro notched two goals and a +2 rating in 10:59 of ice time.

He played again against the Flyers on November 3 but did not suit up for the team’s game the following day against the Maple Leafs and was promptly placed on IR. Biro now returns to Rochester, where the Alberta-born winger has two goals and four assists in five games.

While he may be a bit old to end up with a full-time NHL career, Biro has been an extremely productive player in the minors since turning pro after four years at Penn State in 2020. Signing with the Sabres as an undrafted free agent, Biro has played in 117 games for Rochester across four seasons, notching 32 goals, 71 assists and 103 points.

After clearing waivers preseason, Biro can play up to ten games and be on the active roster for 30 days before he needs them to return to Rochester again. His call-up took a small chunk out of that, but he will remain one of the Sabres’ top call-up options should injuries strike.

Sabres Recall Matt Savoie, Place Brandon Biro On IR

November 6, 2023 at 10:42 am CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Sabres have recalled top prospect Matthew Savoie to the NHL and placed recent call-up Brandon Biro on injured reserve. Savoie is coming up from the AHL, after a conditioning stint to help nurse an upper-body injury. The reason for Biro’s assignment to IR hasn’t yet been disclosed.

The news of Savoie’s recall is exciting for Sabres fans who missed the rookie punch that Zach Benson brought to the lineup. Benson is also on IR with a lower-body injury that’s holding him out week-to-week. Savoie and Benson were linemates on the Winnipeg Ice last season and would be slated to be teammates again on the Wenatchee Wild if neither of them can hang onto an NHL roster spot. Benson has two points, both assists, through his first six NHL games.

Savoie has performed well with the Rochester Americans, playing in his first professional hockey games on this conditioning stint. He’s totaled five points and six penalty minutes through his first six games, ranking 10th on the Rochester Americans in terms of points per game so far this season. That’s an encouraging sign for the 19-year-old centerman, who seems to be adjusting well to the pro scene. Savoie alternated line rushes with Victor Olofsson at the team’s Monday practice, suggesting that he may get a chance to replicate his AHL success at the top level, if the team opts to healthy scratch Olofsson again.

And while all attention will surround Savoie, Sabres fans shouldn’t forget about Biro, who has scored his first two NHL goals in the two games he was provided this season. Biro did record a team-low CF% (Corsi-For Percentage) in his two games, although his low sample size makes that metric slightly less concerning. Either way, his value as an NHL talent will likely be tested whenever he’s able to return from injured reserve.

Sabres Recall Brandon Biro

October 31, 2023 at 9:28 am CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

11:30 AM: Buffalo head coach Don Granato has announced that Biro will play in the team’s Wednesday matchup. This announcement comes in light of Zach Benson’s week-to-week injury.

9:30 AM: The Buffalo Sabres have recalled winger Brandon Biro to the NHL. Biro has spent the beginning of the season in the AHL, where he’s scored six points in five games. He’s one of six Rochester Americans currently scoring above a point-per-game pace, with top U20 prospects Isak Rosen and Jiri Kulich co-leading the team in scoring, both sat with nine points in seven games.

The Sabers signed Biro as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of Penn State’s 2019-20 season, making his professional debut in the following year. He scored five points in 15 games in his first AHL season, following it up with a more prominent 41 points in 48 games in 2021-22. That was the same year that Biro received his first NHL recall, making his NHL debut but failing to appear in any more games. Biro was sent back to the minor leagues and continued to establish himself as one of Rochester’s top scorers.

Buffalo has operated with a relatively consistent forward group, with only two players – Zach Benson and Victor Olofsson – not appearing in all nine of the team’s games so far. The former was held out by injury and the latter by a healthy scratching, with Tyson Jost cycling in when either has missed time. Biro joins Jost as the only extra skaters that Buffalo is carrying while Connor Clifton serves a two-game suspension. With such a consistent forward group, it’s more likely that Biro’s recall is to provide additional depth rather than looking for an additional roster player. But if Biro does get to slot in, he’ll have a chance to play in just his second NHL game and search for his first NHL point.
