Toronto Maple Leafs’ George Armstrong Passes Away

January 24, 2021 at 10:53 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 2 Comments

Maple Leafs fans are mourning the passing of long-time Toronto legend George Armstrong, who passed away Sunday at the age of 90. Over a 75-year career as a Maple Leaf, Armstrong has played the role of player, captain, coach, assistant general manager, scout, community ambassador and alumnus.

“George is part of the very fabric of the Toronto Maple Leaf organization and will be deeply missed,” said Toronto Maple Leafs President & Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan in a statement. “A proud yet humble man, he loved being a Maple Leaf but never sought the spotlight even though no player played more games for Toronto or captained the team longer. Always one to celebrate his teammates rather than himself, George couldn’t even bring himself to deliver his speech the day he was immortalized on Legends Row.”

Armstrong might be best known for his days as player as he was the captain of the Maple Leafs for 12 of his 21 years as a player (all with Toronto). In those 12 years, he helped lead Toronto to four Stanley Cup Championships in 1961-62, 1962-63, 1963-64 and 1966-67. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975, had his number retired and is a member of Legend’s Row.

Known as a quiet leader who was never interested in the spotlight, he played in 1,188 games with the Maple Leafs over his career, the most of any Maple Leafs player in team history. He scored 296 goals and 713 points over his tenure that lasted from 1949-50 until 1970-71. He also tallied 26 goals and 60 points over 110 playoff games and was the only player to register a point in each of the four Stanley Cup clinching games.

Everyone at PHR wishes the best to the family and friends of Armstrong and all who he touched during his life.

Toronto Maple Leafs Considering Additions At Forward

January 23, 2021 at 8:17 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost two-thirds of their top line when Joe Thornton and Auston Matthews were ruled out at the same time earlier this week, and now they might be looking for a little bit of a boost upfront. While Matthews isn’t expected out long with his minor issue, Thornton is out for at least a month with a fractured rib. Add in Nick Robertson’s knee injury from earlier in the month and it didn’t come as much of a surprise when Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines that the Maple Leafs are looking around for an addition at forward.

It’s not that the Maple Leafs have no depth, as they showed when Adam Brooks stepped into the lineup and scored a powerplay goal against the Edmonton Oilers, but some of the newcomers haven’t been able to contribute much so far. Alexander Barabanov and Wayne Simmonds have both been held entirely scoreless through the first six games while Jimmy Vesey has two goals and no assists. When the Maple Leafs traded away Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson to clear cap space in the offseason, they hoped these players could pick up some of the secondary scoring load—so far, they haven’t.

Of course, Toronto is already performing a delicate salary cap dance this season, moving players up and down from the taxi squad whenever they can to try and bank cap space. It resulted in the loss of goaltender Aaron Dell when they were forced to place him on waivers and doesn’t leave a lot of flexibility to make a trade.

The team isn’t going to be shipping out one of their high-priced talents, meaning any improvement would have to come on the margins of the roster at this point. Perhaps one option would be moving a defenseman as high profile KHL signing Mikko Lehtonen and top prospect Rasmus Sandin can’t find their way into the lineup on a regular basis. Still, if they remove any of that depth the same issue could crop up quickly with an injury on the backend.

Texas Stars Sign Six Players

January 23, 2021 at 7:14 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Texas Stars have added six players on AHL contracts for the 2020-21 season, bringing in a ton of experience and depth for their minor league run. Nicholas Baptiste, Cole Schneider, Nick Moutrey, Derek Barach, Nikita Scherbak have all joined the team, while Josh Melnick re-signs after spending last season in Texas.

These aren’t just minor league depth pieces, as Baptiste, Schneider, and Scherbak actually all have NHL experience. Baptiste, 25, was a third-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2013 and played 47 games at the highest level. He split last season between the Toronto Marlies and Belleville Senators, scoring 11 points in 35 games.

Schneider, 30, has just six games of experience at the NHL level but has been a force in the AHL for years. Last season he recorded 18 goals and 46 points in just 54 games for the Milwaukee Admirals.

Scherbak, 25, may be the most interesting name of the bunch, given he was a first-round pick in 2014. Selected 26th overall by the Montreal Canadiens, he received 37 games at the NHL level but never could quite make his mark. After spending some time in the Los Angeles Kings system, he left for the KHL last season and recorded 11 points in 31 games.

Texas will begin their season on February 5 against the Iowa Wild.

Canadian NHL Teams Request Quarantine Rule Change

January 23, 2021 at 6:31 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 18 Comments

Back in training camp, the standard for being cleared to participate for Canadian teams was four negative COVID-19 tests in a seven-day span with players getting the green light to join on-ice activities on the eighth day.  That changed once the regular season started with the rule moving to a two-week quarantine period.  That isn’t sitting well with the Canadian teams as TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that they have made a request to the federal government to go back to the training camp rules.

This has come into play a couple of times already, first with Edmonton and their attempts to acquire a third goaltender in the absence of Mike Smith.  They claimed Troy Grosenick off waivers last weekend and still haven’t been able to activate him to their roster yet.  It will also be a factor in today’s acquisition of Pierre-Luc Dubois by Winnipeg as he’ll have to miss two weeks as things stand. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff alluded to the request in his press conference today and in fact, has told Ron MacLean of Hockey Night In Canada that the team is hoping a private flight to Winnipeg will reduce the quarantine to just seven days.

The proposal may not be viewed favorably by Canadian health officials. The reason they were allowed the one-week period for training camp was that the second week carried a restriction of players being limited to going to practices and home with no out-of-province travel since there were no exhibition games.  That’s not the case anymore, making it a very different situation.

The argument from the Canadian teams will likely be that there is a strict testing regimen throughout the league and if acquired players haven’t tested positive at the time of the trade and make it through a week of isolation with four separate negative tests, they should be considered safe.

This is a situation to monitor given the effects it could have on the trade market.  Canadian teams that are looking to add are already in a situation where they will have to time a move to ensure the new player misses as little time as possible.  That’s harder to do the closer we get to the April 12 trade deadline and it’s important to note that players count against the salary cap (though not the active roster) while they go through their quarantine period.  Slashing that in half would go a long way towards facilitating more transactions involving those teams in the weeks and months to come.

Patrik Laine Open To “Long-Term Relationship” With Blue Jackets

January 23, 2021 at 5:42 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

Over the offseason, Patrik Laine’s agent made it clear that the enigmatic forward would like a fresh start somewhere else. He had flourished as a goal-scorer with the Winnipeg Jets, but the relationship between team and player never seemed perfect. With Laine set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the year, it wasn’t clear if a long-term deal would ever really happen in Winnipeg.

Now that he’s in Columbus after a blockbuster deal saw the Jets’ sniper head south in exchange for Pierre-Luc Dubois (with Jack Roslovic tagging along), Laine is facing the challenge of building a new relationship with a new organization.

Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen told reporters including Aaron Portzline of The Athletic today that he had already spoken with Laine about a potential extension and establishing a “long-term relationship,” though more serious negotiations are still to come. When Laine was asked if he’d be open to that, he told reporters including Alison Lukan of The Athletic that he would certainly be open to it and had heard only positive things about the city and organization. “Hopefully that’s a spot where I’m enjoying life and enjoying playing hockey,” said the always thoughtful Laine, while head coach John Tortorella explained that he already had a “really good conversation” with the sniper.

What exactly would a long-term extension for Laine look like? That part is entirely unclear at this point. Unlike his fellow 2016 draftee Auston Matthews, who signed a five-year deal in Toronto before his entry-level deal was even up, Laine is playing on a two-year bridge contract that carries a cap hit of $6.75MM and expires after this season. He’ll be eligible for arbitration, giving him a little leverage in negotiations and has been one of the most impressive goal scorers in the league through his first few seasons.

In fact, since he entered the league in 2016-17, only eight players have scored more than Laine’s 140 goals and five of those have played more games during that period. They all have averaged quite a bit more ice time than Laine’s career 17:40 mark, which points to a lack of polish in other areas but only makes his goal totals more impressive.

Because of those numbers, Laine will enter this negotiation without many direct comparables in the league. The Blue Jackets have plenty of cap space to work with, but they’ve also had a problem in the past actually retaining talent. If Kekalainen truly wants to retain Laine long-term and build a relationship with the star forward, he’ll have to be willing to hand out the biggest contract of his tenure in Columbus. That record is currently held by Cam Atkinson, who signed a seven-year, $41,125,000 contract in 2017. Atkinson’s $5.875MM cap hit comes in well below what Laine is already making and should be shattered by any new deal.

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 01/23/21

January 23, 2021 at 4:33 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 protocol. The Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins are still listed as TBA, but the rest of the list is in:

Carolina – Warren Foegele, Jordan Martinook, Jaccob Slavin, Jordan Staal, Teuvo Teravainen, Jesper Fast*
Columbus – Patrik Laine*, Jack Roslovic*
Dallas – Blake Comeau
Detroit – Adam Erne, Robby Fabbri, Sam Gagner, Jon Merrill, Filip Zadina
New Jersey – Jesper Bratt, Mackenzie Blackwood
Tampa Bay –  Curtis McElhinney
Washington – Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Samsonov
Winnipeg – Tucker Poolman, Pierre-Luc Dubois*

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: Mikko Koivu, Columbus Blue Jackets; Anton Forsberg, Winnipeg Jets

Obviously, the big names today are those that swapped teams, as Laine, Roslovic, and Dubois are all listed. Roslovic was already in his hometown of Columbus awaiting a new contract, meaning he has immediately entered the protocol, while Laine and Dubois will also need to travel and face government-imposed quarantines.

Fast becomes the sixth Hurricanes player on the list, taking away another option as they wait out the postponed games.

North Notes: Danault, Benn, Dube

January 23, 2021 at 3:30 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Canadiens center Phillip Danault is slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and while it was previously reported that there wasn’t much news on the contract front, Mathias Brunet of La Presse reports that the team did reach out with a long-term offer back in September.  The proposal they were believed to have tabled was a six-year, $30MM pact, a $5MM AAV which would have represented a notable raise on his current $3.083MM AAV.  Brunet notes the offer wasn’t countered with his agent, former NHL goaltender Stephane Fiset, declining to comment.

Danault has quietly emerged as one of the better two-way centers in the league, putting up 100 points over the past two seasons while finishing no lower than seventh in Selke Trophy voting both times.  As things stand, he’s set to be one of the better middlemen available in free agency and even in a softer marketplace, he could still beat that offer.  Whether the Canadiens can afford to with now nearly $66MM in commitments for 2021-22 remains to be seen.

More from the North Division:

  • Canucks defenseman Jordie Benn has been cleared to play, notes Postmedia’s Patrick Johnston. He has yet to play this season after testing positive for COVID-19 and will be a welcome addition to a team that is banged up on the back end.  The 33-year-old played in just 44 games last season, logging a little over 16 minutes per night but may immediately be called on to play more than that given their current situation.
  • The Flames are hoping to have winger Dillon Dube available for their next game on Sunday against Toronto, relays Postmedia’s Wes Gilbertson. Dube is dealing with a lower-body issue sustained on Monday against Vancouver and while he left that game, they haven’t played since.  He has spent some time in Calgary’s top six already this season so getting him back without him missing technically even a single game would certainly be a positive.

Sharks To Play Two Home Games In Arizona

January 23, 2021 at 2:54 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As a result of the ban on contact sports in Santa Clara County, the Sharks held their training camp in Arizona and were given an eight-game road trip to start the season in the hopes that there would be more clarity on whether or not they’d be able to return home by then.  That isn’t the case as the team announced that they will host their first two ’home’ games against Vegas in Glendale where the Coyotes play.  Team president Jonathan Beecher released the following statement about their hopes to return to San Jose soon:

We feel that we have put significant precautions in place, including daily COVID-19 testing of the athletes and support staff, to allow for us to safely return to play games at SAP Center, while not exposing the community to any additional health risk.  In our discussions with County officials over the past several months, we have shared our detailed return-to-play plans and are hopeful that we can find practical solutions to this difficult situation very soon.

Following this two-game set, the Sharks are back on the road for four more games with their next home games coming February 13th and 15th.  Accordingly, the team hasn’t made a decision yet on their plans for those contests.  The Coyotes also have home games those days so if San Jose is unable to return home by then, there will likely be some changes to their schedule coming over the next couple of weeks.

Brendan Perlini Signs In Switzerland

January 23, 2021 at 1:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

After failing to land an NHL contract, free agent winger Brendan Perlini has decided to give it a go overseas as Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss NLA announced that they have signed Perlini to a contract for the remainder of their season.

It has been a tough run for the 24-year-old who has yet to live up to his first-round draft billing (12th overall to Arizona in 2014).  After a sluggish start to his 2018-19 season, Perlini was included in the Dylan Strome–Nick Schmaltz swap, giving him an opportunity for a fresh start with Chicago.  He managed a dozen goals in 46 games following the move and it looked like he’d be in good shape for an improved 2019-20 season.

That didn’t happen.  Instead, he was a frequent scratch in October and was eventually traded to Detroit for defensive prospect Alec Regula.  This change of scenery didn’t work out for him though as he managed just one goal and three assists in 39 games with the Red Wings and was unsurprisingly non-tendered back in October.

Perlini is still certainly young enough to work his way back onto the NHL radar but he’s going to have to show that the offensive skills he showed in junior haven’t completely diminished.  That process will now begin in Switzerland.

What Your Team Is Thankful For: Ottawa Senators

January 23, 2021 at 1:27 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

We’ve now made it past the holiday season but there is still plenty to be thankful. Like the last few years, PHR will take a look at what teams are thankful for but this year comes with a bit of a change. Normally teams would have an idea of where their season was heading, coming up on the one-quarter mark with mountains of statistics to analyze. Instead, in this unprecedented year, things are just getting underway. We’ll still take a look at what each group is excited about and what they could hope for with the calendar having now flipped to 2021.

What are the Senators most thankful for?

Their very promising young core.

There has been pain – plenty of it – in recent years but the rewards are coming.  Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle give them two top wingers to build around while Josh Norris is a key piece down the middle.  Thomas Chabot is already a star on the back end while they have several prospects that are a little further away.  Is there a true superstar among the bunch?  They’re hopeful Stutzle can get there but even not, there is enough high-quality prospect talent to do some damage.  If they’re able to spread out their arrival to the NHL over a few years, it will help them be able to afford to keep their core in place as well.

Who are the Senators most thankful for?

A franchise center and a franchise defenseman are hard to come by.  Ottawa doesn’t have the former just yet but they do have the latter in Chabot.  The 18th-overall pick in 2015 took a couple of years to get to the NHL but since then, he has taken off.  There is still room for growth and as their prospect core graduates to Ottawa and upgrades their back end, it can only be good for Chabot.

He’s also the first player out of their new young core to sign a long-term deal.  Instead of taking a bridge contract, he made a max-term eight-year commitment back in 2019 for an $8MM AAV.  He has been a fixture on their back end since 2017 and will be through 2028 at least.  On the franchise building scorecard, the number one defender spot can be checked off for a long time.

What would the Senators be even more thankful for?

A return to form for Colin White.

Two seasons ago, it appeared as if he was going to be part of that young core up front to build around.  He was coming off of a 41-point effort in 2018-19 and signed a six-year, $28.5MM contract that summer, buying up his remaining RFA years plus two years of UFA eligibility.  Even if he wasn’t their future number one center, he was on his way to being a good second-liner.

Last year, however, he struggled considerably and it has been even worse this season as he has already been scratched twice.  All of a sudden, his contract looks like a considerable overpay.  With their self-imposed financial limitations, they can’t afford to have long-term contracts that they’re not getting any sort of return on.  If White can first work his way back into the lineup and then back into a role of some significance, it would at least allow them to get some value out of this deal and make trading him a somewhat-viable option.

What should be on the Senators’ wish list?

As things stand, Ottawa at least on paper looks to be a team that’s probably going to be selling again.  They have several expiring contracts that they’ve absorbed in recent trades including Derek Stepan, Erik Gudbranson, and Artem Anisimov (acquired back in 2019).  If they wind up going that route, adding more picks and prospects to an already-deep cupboard will be on GM Pierre Dorion’s wish list.  Not every prospect pans out and there will come a time where some will need to be moved for win-now players (similar to what they did with the Matt Murray acquisition).  They’re close to being at a spot where they can transition out of the rebuild but while they’re still in it, they may as well keep adding young assets.
