Markus Granlund Out Up To Two Months

The injuries keep coming for the Vancouver Canucks, who have lost Sam Gagner, Brendan Gaunce and Chris Tanev recently and dealt with injuries to Bo Horvat and Brandon Sutter earlier in the year—not to mention Derek Dorsett’s career-ending diagnosis. Now, Rick Dhaliwal of News 1130 reports that Markus Granlund will undergo a surgery on his ankle and is out for seven to eight weeks.

Granlund has been relegated to a checking role for much of the season in Vancouver, and has seen his offensive numbers plummet because of it. The 24-year old forward has just 12 points on the season, a far cry from his 19-goal output a year ago. Interestingly, that may actually benefit the Canucks in the long run.

Vancouver heads into the summer with several restricted free agents—including Granlund—to negotiate with, and will really be deciding the shape of the core going forward. With Granlund eligible for arbitration, another year like 2016-17 would have put him in prime position to demand a hefty long-term deal. Now, coming off a disastrous season, the two sides will likely come together on something more reasonable. Eight weeks would put Granlund out for the remainder of the regular season, and even if he does return for a few games there is little he can do to improve his case.

Nashville Predators “All In” On Rick Nash

In his latest 31 Thoughts column for Sportsnet, venerable hockey insider Elliotte Friedman confirms what has been rumored for the last few weeks: the Nashville Predators are going hard after Rick Nash. Friedman states that the Predators are “all in” on the New York Rangers forward, but wonders if they’ll eventually be able to outbid the field to land him before the trade deadline.

According to other reports, the Rangers are looking for a three-piece return for Nash, similar to the ask for Buffalo’s Evander Kane. That might seem like a lot to give up for the Predators, who have already traded two good young players in Samuel Girard and Vladislav Kamenev and don’t have their 2018 second-round pick or 2019 third-round pick.

Nash has been tenuously linked to the Dallas Stars as well, while the Toronto Maple Leafs are known to be among his approved trade list. While there are surely others, the Predators seem to be the front-runners for the time being. New York has made it clear they’re going to sell off their expiring assets this season, and Nash could be the jewel of the rental market.

Ian Cole Trade Speculation Cooling Off

It wasn’t so long ago that Ian Cole seemed as good as gone from the Pittsburgh Penguins, with speculation that he could be dealt at any minute thanks to friction with head coach Mike Sullivan and a lack of role on the team. Now, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cole doesn’t seem as likely to move.

Mackey writes in his latest 20 Penguins Thoughts column that he’s heard Cole is likely to stay in Pittsburgh through the deadline now, and it’s easy to see why. The 28-year old defenseman has shown the very best of himself lately, recording six points in his last ten games while helping the Penguins go 7-2-1 during that time. The club is closing the gap on the Metropolitan-leading Washington Capitals, and Cole is a huge part of their defensive effort.

Obviously, none of this guarantees he’ll be with the Penguins come March 1st. Cole remains a pending unrestricted free agent, who would be welcomed into several contending dressing rooms if he was made available. Tagged with just a $2.1MM cap hit this season, the defenseman would be the perfect acquisition for many playoff-bound teams.

That’s true though for his current team, who haven’t been able to rely on Matt Hunwick after signing him to a three-year deal last offseason, and still have a relative unknown in Jamie Oleksiak even with his strong performance through 22 games. Cole is playoff tested, suiting up for all 49 games the Penguins have played over their back-to-back Stanley Cup runs, and provides a stable presence to the bottom pairing.

Anaheim Ducks Place Korbinian Holzer On Waivers

The Anaheim Ducks have decided to make another roster move today, placing Korbinian Holzer on waivers. Dennis Rasmussen, who was put on unconditional waivers yesterday, has cleared and will now have his contract mutually terminated. He’ll forfeit the rest of his salary this season, and be able to return to Sweden to play out the year.

Holzer’s placement on waivers comes as something of a surprise, and could precede another move of some sort. The 29-year old defenseman has played only 14 games this season, but has served as the team’s injury replacement and insurance policy for three years now. In June, he signed a new two-year contract worth $900K per season, a number that can be entirely buried in the minor leagues if he clears tomorrow.

Still, the move would leave the Ducks with just six defensemen on the roster. A trade could fix that, or a call-up of one of their younger options. While Andy Welinski and Jaycob Megna have both played some games this season, it seems unlikely that either of them would depose any of the starting six without injury. Clearing waivers would certainly give them some more roster flexibility, though they’re already carrying only 22 players on the roster.

The Ducks will definitely be a team to watch over the coming days, as they prepare their roster for the trade deadline stretch. Sitting just a point out of a playoff spot, they have the draft capital and prospects to make a big splash if they so choose.

Minor Transactions: 02/13/18

A busy night in the NHL, with 12 games on tap for tonight. Among them are some huge divisional matchups between St. Louis-Nashville and Philadelphia-New Jersey. Both games could have huge implications on the playoffs, with each team trying to take two points in regulation.

  • The St. Louis Blues have recalled Oskar Sundqvist from his conditioning stint ahead of their game. Sundqvist had been a healthy scratch for some time, so was loaned to the San Antonio Rampage to get into some game action. In six games with the AHL club this year, the 23-year old center has six points.
  • According to Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers, the Cleveland Monsters have loaned Andre Benoit to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the remainder of the season. The veteran defenseman returned from Sweden to play in the AHL this season, where he has five points in 31 games.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have sent Andrei Mironov to the AHL, bringing up Duncan Siemens in his spot. Siemens has played just four NHL games so far in his career, despite his high draft position at 11th-overall in 2011. In 45 games with the San Antonio Rampage this season, he has seven points.
  • With the Canucks dealing with several injuries, including one to defenseman Chris Tanev, the team has recalled Philip Holm from the minor leagues. Holm was signed last May out of the Swedish Hockey League, and has found immediate success in the AHL with the Utica Comets.
  • Marcus Pettersson has been given his first NHL recall, brought up by the Anaheim Ducks in place of the waived Korbinian Holzer. Pettersson, a second-round pick from 2014, is in his first season in North America. In 44 games with the San Diego Gulls, the 6’4″ rangy defenseman has 14 points.

Gionta, Wisniewski Drawing NHL Attention

Team USA won’t kick off their Olympic tournament until Wednesday, but that hasn’t stopped NHL teams from already reaching out to the agents of veteran Americans Brian Gionta and James Wisniewski. Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press writes that the unemployed former NHLers may not stay that way for long after the Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea wrap up. Teams have already begun to inquire into the availability of both long-time pros for contracts through the end of the regular season. At this time of year, the concept of bringing in game-ready, experienced assets without paying inflated prices is sure to entice many squads.

Gionta, 39, and Wisniewski, 33, will only have about a day and a half following the end of the Olympics to sign in the NHL and remain eligible for the postseason, Whyno writes. This means that the agents for both players will be busy working the phones while the players are hard at work in pursuit of a gold medal. The case for each is simple. Gionta is less than a year removed from NHL action and played in all 82 games with the Buffalo Sabres last season, recording 35 points, which was good enough for sixth among Buffalo forwards. He has both the experience and ability to be a depth asset up front for a contender. Wisniewski, on the other hand, last played a full NHL season in 2014-15. A season-ending injury in the first and only game of his 2015-16 season and Carolina Hurricanes tenure derailed Wisniewski’s NHL career, but after bouncing around Russia, Switzerland, Germany, and the AHL over the past two seasons, looking especially impressive with the Deutsche Eishockey Liga’s Kassel Huskies this fall, Wisniewski has proven to still be a capable player. A strong outing at the Olympics for the offensive-minded, right-shot defenseman would make him all the more attractive addition.

While the agents do their jobs of selling their players, Gionta and Wisniewski will do theirs, leading the American team through their Olympic schedule. Both need a strong individual performance to boost their value to interested NHL teams, but will surely be more invested in the performance of the team. Despite several promising young players like Ryan Donato, Jordan Greenway, and Troy Terry and two of the best players in the Swiss NLA, Garrett Roe and Mark Arcobello, Team USA will undoubtedly look to their only two established stars to be the leaders on the ice and in the locker room.

Trade Candidates: Nick Holden

With the trade deadline approaching, we will be profiling several players in the weeks ahead that have a good chance to be dealt by February 26th.

The New York Rangers are selling. That much is well-established. While the main focus of the media is on big names like Ryan McDonagh and Mats Zuccarello, the reality is the only deals that are more likely than not include the team’s impending unrestricted free agents. One such player, and the only Rangers defenseman that fits that description, is Nick Holden. While Holden is not the swift, puck-moving defenseman emphasized by today’s NHL, he still holds value in many facets of the game. In fact, it’s fair to say that Holden has been routinely under-rated throughout his career (at least Patrick Roy thought so). New York knows this too, after acquiring him from Colorado for just a fourth-round pick back in the 2016 off-season only to watch him play a key role on the blue line the past two seasons. Now that they’re on the other side of the table looking to trade him away, they’ll try not to make the same mistake. However, with a “fire sale” potentially about to begin for the Rangers, Holden seems destined to be shipped out for the best offer.

Contract

Holden is in the final season of a three-year, 4.95MM contract extension signed with the Colorado Avalanche in 2014. His cap hit in 2017-18 is $1.65MM, but will count for under $500K at the deadline.

2017-18

Nothing that Holden does on the ice jumps out, though for a defenseman, that can be a good thing. In no way does Holden play a flashy, offensive possession game and his numbers this season prove that. He has just a few goals and a handful of assists on the year, below average Corsi numbers, and almost no role on the power play. Perhaps the most telling detail of his playing style is that the casual hockey fan likely has never heard of him, as his play rarely garners attention. Why then is he playing top-four minutes for the Rangers this year and playing top-pair minutes last year? Holden simply has a solid, no-nonsense game. He plays a safe, dependable style in his own end and can thus be relied on for major minutes without risking a breakdown on defense. Holden is also a physical, but clean player. He has led the Rangers in hits in back-to-back seasons, but does so while taking few detrimental penalties. When given the chance, Holden also has quite the shot and led all Blueshirt blue liners in goal-scoring in 2016-17. It’s easy to say that Holden has taken a step back this season. His offensive totals are way off his pace set last year and his plus/minus and ice time are down as a result. However, as for the hallmarks of his game, Holden is playing just as physical, is blocking more shots, and has improved greatly in turnovers, with fewer giveaways and more takeaways. Holden’s 2017-18 season would give no team any reason to think that he is a game-changer or the answer to all of their problems, but could he be a reliable asset to a contender? Absolutely.

Potential Suitors

Holden fits the bill of a player who gets traded every deadline season –  a responsible depth defenseman who can play reliable hockey when called upon. Every season contenders seems to add a player like this simply out of convenience rather than necessity. Holden is not the type of player who will radically change the fortunes of a contender, but – especially at that cap hit – he is one worth the asset investment as he can provide reliable defense if necessary. Look for the top teams in the league to take a look at Holden in the next two weeks. The Atlantic trio of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins, and Toronto Maple Leafs could all use depth on the blue line and while at times they have all been connected to bigger targets, surely one or more will decide to settle for a lesser addition. In the Metro, the Washington Capitals could really use some defensive depth and experience and the New Jersey Devils could particularly use a more safe, reliable defender given their current goal-tending crisis. In the Pacific, the Los Angeles Kings would make a nice fit, so long as their playoff position is a little firmer by the deadline.

However, the best fit for Holden seems to be the Central’s Dallas Stars. The Stars have little cap space to work with and have admitted that they won’t be major buyers, but the affordable contract of Holden paired with the responsible, hard-nosed game that head coach Ken Hitchcock appreciates makes for a nice match. Dallas is in good position to at least clinch a wild card spot this season and perhaps play spoiler in the postseason, but regardless of the status of Marc Methot, the team is known to be looking for a defenseman and Holden fits the bill for the type of guy they want and can afford to acquire.

Likelihood of a Trade

If the Rangers are serious about their fire sale, then a Holden trade is nearly a certainty. There has been no word on any extension talks, meaning Holden’s days in New York are numbered; no point in keeping him around just to fade away into free agency at the end of the season. The Rangers got Holden for a fourth-rounder in the off-season two years ago and now, two solid campaigns later and at deadline prices, they should be able to get at least that back. If the fire sale is on, they should take what they can get and move on.

Steven Kampfer Out Four To Six Weeks With Broken Hand

The hits keep coming for the New York Rangers, as the team announced today that Steven Kampfer would be out four to six weeks with a broken hand. Kampfer had recently been given more responsibility on the blue line for New York, logging a season-high 22:39 of ice time last night against the Winnipeg Jets. The team has recalled defenseman Ryan Sproul to fill the roster spot.

Kampfer, 29, was acquired by the Rangers last season in exchange for failed top prospect Dylan McIlrath. The team finally moved on from McIlrath, the 10th-overall pick from 2010, after recording just four points in 38 career NHL games. In Kampfer the team acquired a journeyman of sorts, that has now played 166 NHL games split between four franchises. Though he doesn’t offer much offensively, the team was just looking for anyone who could handle himself in the defensive end.

The Rangers are trying to add speed and youth to their team, and this will certainly give them another opportunity. While Brady Skjei has already proven himself at the NHL level, Neal Pionk and John Gilmour are still trying to show they have what it takes to be part of the future in New York. With Kampfer out for a good chunk of the rest of the season, there is even more ice time to go around.

Toronto Maple Leafs On Rick Nash Approved Trade List

The New York Rangers have a group of 12 teams that they could send Rick Nash without his approval, after they asked him recently to submit his 18-team no-trade list. It isn’t clear who most of those 12 teams are, but Frank Seravalli of TSN confirms that the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of them. Nash recently said he had included Canadian contenders in his approved group, of which really there are only three: the Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets. It’s unclear if the latter two are among the dozen teams, though Seravalli writes the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars are both “believed to be” among the approved destinations.

It doesn’t seem like the Maple Leafs have much use for the winger as they continue to deal with a roster crunch of their own, but there is a connection to head coach Mike Babcock from international competition. Nash was on two gold-medal winning clubs with Babcock, exquisitely playing a checking role alongside Jonathan Toews at times.

Nash will almost certainly be dealt by the February 26th trade deadline, and could even set the market for rental forwards by landing the Rangers a hefty package. There have been reports that New York is looking for as many as three assets for the 33-year old forward, a big ask for someone who can only give you a few months of production. While Toronto is now confirmed to be on the list, they don’t seem like a match to enter the bidding, even if the price does drop to a reasonable amount.

Deadline Primer: Dallas Stars

With the trade deadline fast approaching, we will be taking a closer look at the situation for each team. Where do they stand, what do they need to do, and what assets do they have to fill those needs? Next up is a look at the Dallas Stars.

The 2016-17 season didn’t go as planned for the Dallas Stars, finishing 30 points behind their pace from the previous year and missing the playoffs entirely. Now, with a new coach and important offseason additions, the club is back in the playoff race and looking to buy at the deadline.

Jason SpezzaTrade Chips

Even after acquiring players like Ben Bishop and Marc Methot last offseason, the Stars head into the trade deadline with a full cupboard of draft picks. That, paired with a very interesting prospect group headlined by third-overall selection Miro Heiskanen, sets the Stars up well to be one of the preeminent buyers over the next few weeks and again in June.

It seems unlikely that the team would dangle Heiskanen or other top prospects like Riley Tufte, Jason Robertson or Jake Oettinger in trade for a piece at the deadline, but there could be some names off the roster that would be interesting for teams looking for NHL options. Brett Ritchie hasn’t been able to find the same level of play he showed last season when he scored 16 goals, but is still a big body on a reasonable contract. Second-round pick Remi Elie hasn’t quite found his form in professional hockey, but is still just 22 and has shown flashes of the hard-working, puck-protecting winger he was in junior.

There is also the case of Jason Spezza, who has had an extremely up-and-down season. At one point made a healthy scratch by new head coach Ken Hitchcock, Spezza is still an excellent faceoff man and has 24 points on the year. He comes with another year at $7.5MM and a ten team no-trade list, but if Dallas decided to retain some salary they could perhaps move him to open up some ice time for their younger players.

Team Needs

1) Middle-Six Winger: The Stars have built a solid defensive core with their top two pairings, and Methot is expected back in the lineup soon. Instead of looking at the defense, they’re after another wing option that can contribute offensively. Linked to Rick Nash recently, they could look for a less expensive option if the rental prices get out of control.

2) Depth Center: If the team doesn’t believe Spezza can handle a matchup role in the playoffs, they could look to add another option down the middle. Martin Hanzal hasn’t been the offensive performer they’d hoped even when he’s been healthy, and despite Radek Faksa’s emergence he’s still relatively unproven. Adding a bottom-six center with playoff experience could be helpful as the Stars try to make and then contend in the Stanley Cup chase.
