Jim Montgomery To Interview A Second Time With Florida Panthers
According to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post, Jim Montgomery will interview a second time with the Florida Panthers for their head coaching vacancy. Montgomery has four years left on his contract at the University of Denver, and according to Chambers the school is doing everything it can to attempt to retain him.
After firing Tom Rowe at the end of the season, GM Dale Tallon and the Panthers’ front office have been looking at several different names to possibly fill the position. San Jose Sharks assistant Bob Boughner has been linked, as has veteran coach Michel Therrien. Pierre LeBrun of TSN recently reported that the team is also waiting for some of the assistant coaches still working in the playoffs to finish their seasons. Those could include people like Nashville assistant Phil Housley, Ottawa assistant Marc Crawford or Pittsburgh assistant Rick Tocchet.
Instead though, Montgomery will apparently come in for a second visit after initially meeting with the team on April 26th. Fresh off an NCAA National Championship with DU, Montgomery is among the hottest coaching prospects in the country at the moment. Interestingly, Chambers notes that several players including Henrik Borgstrom, Florida’s first-round pick from last summer, would consider turning pro if Montgomery were to leave. Will Butcher, the reigning Hobey Baker award winner was originally recruited by Montgomery and has spent his entire career under the coach. Butcher will become a free agent in August of this year should he not reach an agreement with the Colorado Avalanche.
For several reasons, Montgomery might be an excellent coach for the Panthers going forward but he doesn’t come without his warts. Despite playing 122 games in the NHL, he’s never worked as a coach in the league at any level, as he headed into the college ranks as soon as his playing career had ended. While he coached the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints for three years—winning two championships thanks in part to a young Johnny Gaudreau—he’s never coached in a professional league.
Dallas Stars Sign Roope Hintz To Three-Year Deal
Roope Hintz has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars. The deal will begin next season, with Hintz likely joining the AHL Texas Stars for the 2017-18 season. No financial details were released.
Hintz spent this season playing for HIFK Helsinki in the Finnish league (the same team as possible top-3 draft pick Miro Heiskanen) and broke out offensively, scoring 19 goals and 30 points in 44 games. It was always expected that Hintz would eventually find his offensive game, as his shot is excellent and he has elite skating ability. That’s what caused Dallas to select him in the second round of the 2015 draft, despite only scoring 17 points in his first taste of the highest level in Finland.
Last year he took a step forward and was part of the gold medal winning Finnish team at the World Juniors alongside Kasperi Kapanen (who scored the winning goal), Patrik Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi, Sebastian Aho, Mikko Rantanen and others. The next in an amazing group of young forwards from Finland, Hintz will make an impact as a two-way player in the NHL before long.
Boston Bruins Taking Offers On Ryan Spooner
According to Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News, the Boston Bruins are listening to offers on Ryan Spooner. Kennedy tweets that he’s heard New Jersey, Vancouver and Vegas already linked to the 25-year old center. Spooner has been considered a trade candidate for much of the season, after first clashing with head coach Claude Julien and generally underperforming expectations.
Spooner will be a restricted free agent this summer and eligible for arbitration, forcing the Bruins to make a decision on his future with the organization. While last year he showed the offensive potential of a second-line center, scoring 49 points in 80 games, this year he took a step backwards and at times looked lost in the defensive zone. The Bruins committed long-term to David Backes last summer and have an extension kicking in for Brad Marchand next year, meaning much of their forward capital is already tied up. Add in a new deal for pending RFA David Pastrnak who is coming off a 34-goal season, and the Bruins will likely need to clear out some cap space in the coming months.
After being eliminated by the Ottawa Senators this postseason, the Bruins lie at somewhat of a crossroads. Do they hope that Spooner can rebound and become the offensive dynamo that he has looked at times, or do they use him as a trade chip to bring in another defenseman to take some of the pressure off 19-year old Charlie McAvoy next year.
For all three potential landing spots, adding offense that isn’t on the wrong side of 30 is imperative this summer. Vegas will likely be in dire need of skill in their forward group after taking the overpaid or underperforming veterans from several squads in the expansion draft, and Spooner could likely slot into their top line immediately, and be a key part of their powerplay. In Vancouver, the team is looking for a quick rebuild and could use some center depth once Henrik Sedin finally leaves. New Jersey, likely the closest of the three to competing—especially after adding the top pick in the draft this year—have needed scoring for years and could use another dynamic player on the powerplay.
In all, Spooner’s availability should come as no surprise to teams around the league. His market though may be limited, as teams will not want to give up an established defenseman for him, not expect the Bruins to just give him away. It will be interesting to see if he is part of a bigger deal, or if the two sides can find some sort of one-for-one match.
Injury Notes: Crosby, Ryan, Karlsson
Sidney Crosby took to the ice today before practice and is continuing to be evaluated on a day-to-day basis. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain was diagnosed with a concussion, and amazingly has not been ruled out yet for game 5 on Saturday night. While it would be unbelievable to see him back in the lineup so soon, it is encouraging to see him back on the ice.
Crosby’s absence was definitely felt in game 4, as the Capitals dominated play for long stretches and kept the Penguins under 19 shots on goal despite five powerplays. The fact that the team won without him is a testament to their depth, but they would obviously welcome him back with open arms when he is deemed ready. That readiness is an interesting debate though, as even if he’s feeling perfectly fine he could still be in danger of suffering a further head injury. With a long history of concussions, the Penguins ought to be very careful not to bring him back too soon.
- Bobby Ryan will be back in the lineup for the Ottawa senators tonight, along with Tom Pyatt and Chris Wideman. Ryan exited game 3 after taking a slapshot from teammate Erik Karlsson, playing just under 12 minutes. He’s an important piece to get back, as he’s turned a terrible season into an excellent playoffs, recording eight points in nine games. Zack Smith, who also exited game 3 with an injury will be a game-time decision for the Senators.
- Speaking of Karlsson, Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated penned an excellent piece talking about the hairline fractures that the Senators’ captain has been playing with. The article goes in-depth on how the Senators viewed Karlsson as a youngster, and how he has now developed beyond even their wildest dreams. “Zubov without the cigarettes” has turned into a legitimate contender for the Hart trophy every year, and at just 26 will have a chance to earn one of the biggest contracts ever given out to a defenseman when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2019.
Morning Notes: KHL Movement, Friberg, Zucker
For the KHL, May 1st is the equivalent of our free agent frenzy on July 1st, as many contracts expire and player movement is at its highest. We already learned about the moves that swapped the rights of some big name NHLers, but the league has broken down some of the other moves that occurred. CSKA Moscow seem like the big winners, after mining the less successful teams for talent.
Kirill Kaprizov is perhaps the biggest name, coming over to CSKA after a huge season for Ufa. The 20-year old Minnesota Wild draft pick scored 42 points in 49 games and starred at the World Juniors, captaining Russia to a bronze with 12 points in 7 games. It may be harder now for the Wild to convince him to come over to the NHL, as he’s under the umbrella of one of the most successful teams in the entire KHL.
- Maxim Shalunov, a Chicago Blackhawks draft pick also joined CSKA after last month ending negotiations with the NHL club. Citing the league’s decision not to participate in the Olympics, Shalunov will now try to prove that he belongs at that tournament. In 49 games last season Shalunov scored 37 points, and could form one of the more dynamic young duos should he be placed with Kaprizov.
- Max Friberg has signed a three-year deal with Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League, heading home after several years bouncing between the AHL and NHL. Friberg was selected in the fifth-round by the Anaheim Ducks and spent the latest season captaining the St. John’s IceCaps.
- Jason Zucker underwent the surgery reported on yesterday, and all things point to a full recovery by the time training camp opens in September. The Minnesota Wild forward had the successful surgery in Philadelphia, and will now begin his rehab to get back on the ice for the team next season. Zucker was a standout this year and will be needed by the Wild to return to the playoffs once again in 2018.
- The St. Louis Blues have pulled the yo-yo string once again on Jordan Schmaltz, bringing him back up after the Chicago Wolves lost game 1 of their second round series last night. Schmaltz is both the insurance defenseman for the Blues and a top player for the Wolves right now, bouncing up and down between games.
Players To Watch In Upcoming OHL Finals
Tonight marks the start of the championship series in the OHL, which will determine which team represents the league in the annual Memorial Cup tournament, made up of the top teams of each of the three Canadian Hockey League entities. This year, that tournament will be held in Windsor, Ontario meaning that the hometown Spitfires will get also get a berth—even though they were knocked out of the first round of these OHL playoffs.
In the finals we’ll see the powerhouse Erie Otters take on the upstart Mississauga Steelheads, a battle between the top team in the league this season versus a team who led their division, but would have placed no higher than third in any other. Erie had an extremely difficult road to the finals, needing an overtime game in the seventh match of their second round series to stay alive. Mississauga on the other hand lost just three games in three series, showing once again that regular season play doesn’t necessarily mean much in the postseason.
Now, the two teams will crash together and show off the next wave of talent for the NHL, some of which has even already had a taste of the NHL. First, let’s look at some already-drafted players who will make the jump to professional hockey very soon.
Dylan Strome, Erie Otters/Arizona Coyotes
The third-overall pick in the 2015 draft was a disappointment to some when he couldn’t do enough to lock up a job this fall in Arizona. In his seven game taste, he registered just a single assist and wasn’t his dominant self at the World Juniors. Since he has returned to Erie though he’s shown that the OHL just isn’t enough for him. With 75 points in 35 games, Strome showed a glimpse of how he was possibly taken ahead of Mitch Marner and Noah Hanifin in his draft year.
Alex DeBrincat, Erie Otters/Chicago Blackhawks
DeBrincat was a linemate of Strome’s in the second half and the pair (along with Tampa’s Taylor Raddysh) made one of the most dominant groups in recent memory. The Chicago Blackhawks second-round pick scored 65 goals and 127 points in 63 games, and has added another 31 in the playoffs so far. All this from a kid who was cut from the Team USA World Junior squad this season—he took it personally.
Michael McLeod, Mississauga Steelheads/New Jersey Devils
A first-round pick from last summer, McLeod is one of the strongest skaters in the league and uses it to play pro-style hockey up and down the rink. Not the offensive talent that either Strome or DeBrincat are, he did nonetheless put up 73 points in 57 games and has turned it up even further in the playoffs. He limits opposing teams when he’s on the ice with his puck possession, and will be an excellent NHL player for a long, long time.
There are also several draft-eligible prospects in the series, some who hold huge roles on their respective teams. Two from the Steelheads stand out as first-round locks in this summer’s draft.
Owen Tippett, Mississauga Steelheads
Tippett is about as “pure” of a goal-scorer you can find in this year’s draft, embodying the sniper archetype. He can score from anywhere in the offensive zone with an incredible wrist shot or power moves to the net. He scored 44 goals in 60 games, and has added another seven in the playoffs. While he’s not the big center that everyone hopes for early in the draft, he’ll be selected in the top-10 because of his ability to put the puck in the net. He’s not quite Patrik Laine, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make an immediate impact as a rookie.
Nicolas Hague, Mississauga Steelheads
You wouldn’t believe it if you saw the lanky 6’5″ defender, but Hague can move around the ice better than most defenders in the league and has natural offensive instincts. His defensive game has come a long way, and seems committed to improving at the next level. He scored 18 goals in the regular season, jumping into the rush and unleashing a raw but powerful shot from the point. Returning to the OHL next season after going somewhere in the middle of round one, he should be one of the top defenders in the league.
Ivan Lodnia, Erie Otters
Lodnia won’t turn 18 until August, and is still extremely raw as a prospect. His ability to grind down opponents is already apparent though, and his offensive game has started to round into form even being buried somewhat on a veteran Erie team. After 56 points in 66 games in the regular season, he’s completely disappeared in the playoffs thus far. He’ll likely drop down into the middle of the second round, but someone may get a hidden gem in that spot. When the Otters lose 5-6 forwards ahead of him this summer, he’ll be front-and-center as a top scoring option next year.
Jason Botterill Emerging As Front Runner For Sabres Job
After scoring a second interview with the Buffalo Sabres, the Buffalo News’ John Vogl believes that Jason Botterill is the favorite to replace Tim Murray as general manager. Vogl reports that the Buffalo News has yet to hear if another candidate has received a second interview. As far as this writing, only Botterill has visited with the Sabres twice. From Vogl:
Buffalo has held a second interview with Botterill for its GM job, according to multiple reports Wednesday. It’s not known how many of the seven candidates are getting second looks, but The Buffalo News has learned that one has not been contacted for another talk.
That would point to Botterill as a favorite.
Vogl goes on to list several reasons why the former Buffalo forward–and Michigan graduate–could end up getting the top job. First, with a background in hockey and a degree in economics, he’s become an “expert” in salary cap analysis. Working as an assistant general manager with defending champion Pittsburgh for over a decade, he has seen first hand how to juggle high salaries while filling in the lineup with talent at a cheaper price. In addition to being the GM of the AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, a team that has seen rousing success, Botterill has also helped the NHL front office with everything from scouting to player development. With a resume boasting so many rich assets, especially for a team that has seen considerable success for a decade, it’s obvious why Boterrill would be considered a “slam dunk” for the job.
The Sabres desperately need that success after being out of the playoffs for the past six seasons, despite drafting a dominant player in Jack Eichel back in 2015. The firings of Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma led many to conclude that it was Eichel’s doing, though that story was dismissed later by Eichel. But it still makes the next coach hire tricky.
Should it be Botterill, he’s already had considerable success hiring coaches, as it was his decision to bring Mike Sullivan aboard for Wilkes-Barre. Sullivan was promoted last season to the big club, and eventually led the Pens to a Stanley Cup.
If the past is any indication of future success, Buffalo may be in for a home run hire should it be Botterill.
Snapshots: GM Report Cards, Rangers, Nashville’s Defense
Hockey Graphs takes an in-depth look at the 31 general managers in the NHL (including Vegas and those who were recently let go–Dean Lombardi and Tim Murray) using a variety of different metrics. Leading the pack is Nashville’s Dave Poile, while the Canucks’ Jim Benning rounds out the list at number thirty-one. It’s a list that relies heavily on advanced metrics and other measurements, staying in line with Hockey Graph’s dedication to taking the emotion out of hockey analysis and instead, using the quantitative side (with a smattering of qualitative analysis) to create the list. Part one of the article helps make sense of how they came up with their rankings while giving a background to the metrics used.
- Newsday’s Steve Zipay reports that the Rangers aren’t looking too far ahead as they try to even up their series against Ottawa tomorrow night. After drubbing the Sens 4-1, the Rangers have an advantage as Bobby Ryan and Zack Smith are both injured, and the Sens will have to “alter” lines. Several Rangers were adamant that while falling into a 3-1 hole would be difficult to overcome, netminder Henrik Lundqvist said they must take it one game at a time. Zipay adds that though Rick Nash didn’t practice, he will absolutely be playing in Game 4.
- ESPN’s Chuck Gormley writes that its the Nashville blueline is wreaking havoc through these playoffs, pacing the Preds’ strong play and making a case for the organization’s first Stanley Cup. The team’s defenseman has eight goals and fourteen assists in just eight games, and according to Gormley, it’s looking more and more like the trade for P.K. Subban will tilt heavily in Nashville’s favor as the victor of the deal. Gormley highlights each player on the blueline, and writing that should the Predators continue on the path they are, it could be an epic matchup in the next round should Edmonton continue its ascent through the playoffs.
Red Wings Notes: Draft Targets, Svechnikov
Since the Red Wings will be picking in the top ten for the first time since taking Martin Lapointe in 1991, there are a number of theories as to who they might take. MLive’s Brendan Savage pencils in Russian Klim Kostin via a Bleacher Report article conducting mock drafts. Kostin is an 18-year-old winger who was limited this season due to a shoulder injury, but spent time with the KHL’s Dynamo Moscow. NHL Central Scouting has Kostin as its #1 skater while last July, the Hockey News’ Ryan Kennedy had a write up on Kostin, who opted to stay in Russia instead of playing in North America after being taken in the CHL Import Draft. Kennedy pegged Kostin as a top pick in this year’s draft, and though injury has kept Kostin down this season, the Red Wings seem to be line for a player who scouts peg as a strong scorer down the road.
- Fan Rag’s Franklin Steele penned a draft target piece about the Red Wings as well, listing defensemen Cale Makar, Jusso Valimaki, and forward Elias Pettersson as possible choices. Makar and Valimaki both fill a major need for Detroit which is a top defenseman, one they can grow into a desperately needed one or two d-man. Makar brings elite skating and skill. Valimaki scored at a point-per-game pace with the Tri-City Americans in the WHL, revealing another skill defenseman the Wings desperately crave. Should defensemen not be there, Steele believes Pettersson makes the most sense, should Owen Tippett or Gabe Vilardi not be available. A two way forward, Pettersson has what Steele calls the “fastest hands” of the prospects, but some red flags, including struggling during international play, could be a liability.
- Evgeny Svechnikov leads AHL affiliate Grand Rapids into its second round matchup against the Chicago Wolves in the Calder Cup playoffs writes the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James. The Griffins made quick work of Milwaukee, sweeping them en route to its tilt with the Wolves. Svechnikov, who many believe could crack the Red Wings roster out of training camp next season, is tied with four points in just three games. Fellow prospect Tyler Bertuzzi, also has four points. This builds on Svechnikov’s torrid second half, where he notched 34 points in 36 games, scoring 10 goals and adding 24 assists. St. James reports that head coach Todd Nelson calls Svechnikov a “great success story,” adding that the youngster spent a lot of time watching video to cut down on turnovers. The result, Nelson says, is a more complete game.
