Vegas Notes: Shipachyov, Clauses, Dadonov

Vegas Golden Knights’ GM George McPhee had a conference call with the media today, and was candid about many topics. Most of the call had to do with Vadim Shipachyov, the newest (and second) member of the Golden Knights. McPhee made it clear that Shipachyov will play in their top-six and get a lot of ice-time.

McPhee also put into words what many people have thought about the upcoming expansion draft:

He’s a skilled center iceman. They’re very, very, very hard to find.  We are going to need skill, and trying to get that position in the expansion draft would be difficult. 

While there are going to be interesting players available, finding top-line skill will be extremely rare in the expansion draft. Some may dispute if Shipachyov has that, but it’s clear he can at least keep up with top players.

  • McPhee also announced that Shipachyov’s deal doesn’t include a no-movement clause, for one simple reason: he doesn’t give those out. The GM said that he doesn’t negotiate those, but in today’s NHL where they are almost automatically included for long-term deals, he may have to soften his stance at some point in the future.
  • The Vegas GM admitted that he has been in contact with Evgeni Dadonov, but isn’t even convinced at this point that he’s coming to the NHL. It does seem like Vegas has a lot of interest if he decides to change leagues, as SinBin relays an answer regarding Dadonov: “it wouldn’t hurt to have other Russian players here.”

Snapshots: DeBrincat, Kerdiles, Vegas Goaltending

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat was named the OHL’s Most Outstanding Player today, winning the Red Tilson trophy for 2016-17. DeBrincat follows a long line of future NHL players, including (in reverse order) Mitch Marner, Connor McDavid, Connor Brown and Vincent Trocheck. DeBrincat’s 65 goals and 127 points easily paced the league, and he’s added another league-leading 31 in the playoffs.

DeBrincat was held off the scoresheet in game one of the championship series against the Mississauga Steelheads last night, but he likely won’t be kept down for long. The OHL released a reel of every one of his goals, which provides a great example in how he seems to find open space in the slot on a consistent basis. He’ll have to keep that up at the next level, as goaltenders start to stop more of his wicked wrist shots.

  • The Anaheim Ducks have recalled Nic Kerdiles from the San Diego Gulls, likely due to the fact that Patrick Eaves and Ondrej Kase are still not skating. The young Kerdiles made his NHL debut this year with the Ducks, and is beginning to show why the team took him 36th overall in 2012. In five playoff games with the Gulls, Kerdiles has six points including goals at even strength, shorthanded and on the powerplay.
  • Matt Larkin of The Hockey News put together a list of fifteen possible options for the Vegas Golden Knights in net next season, which interestingly enough doesn’t include Ben Bishop. The Los Angeles Kings goaltender will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and likely the top option on the market. With the Golden Knights already showing they can hang with the big boys by recruiting Vadim Shipachyov, there is no reason to suspect that they couldn’t woo the former Vezina finalist on a short-term deal to show he’s still an elite goaltender. That would also let them take younger goaltenders in the expansion draft and let them develop behind Bishop for a couple of seasons.

Cal Petersen Still Undecided About 2017-18

The Buffalo Sabres are hoping that a chance to experience the World Championships with Team USA will help Cal Petersen make the decision to forego his senior year at Notre Dame and turn pro this summer. John Vogl of the Buffalo News reports that recently fired GM Tim Murray had offered Petersen the starting job for the AHL Rochester Americans next season should he sign, though it’s unclear where that promise would stand with whoever is eventually hired.

Petersen though may be looking at the experience in Germany and France (where the tournament is being held) as a stepping stone to a potential Olympic berth next season. When the NHL decided that it wouldn’t be heading the the Olympics, the idea of possibly suiting up for his country did cross Petersen’s mind. In an interview with Ryan O’Leary for the IIHF website, Petersen admits as much.

Any chance I get to wear the red, white and blue is great, and I want to take full advantage of it. I’ve definitely thought about [playing in the Olympics] especially after the NHL said it wasn’t going. I’m sure this will help and if it leads to the other things like the Olympics, that’d be great.

Last year at Notre Dame, Petersen posted a 23-12-5 record and .926 save percentage, his third straight excellent season for the club. Selected in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, he’s become one of the better goaltending prospects in the country and would definitely be on the short list for the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. His inclusion at these World Championships ahead of many other qualified goaltenders only strengthens that possibility.

For the Sabres, a team that isn’t yet committed to Robin Lehner long-term adding Petersen to the system would be a huge boost. Lehner will be looking for a deal this offseason as he heads into restricted free agency, but the presence of Petersen as a possible future option would give the Sabres some leverage in talks. When top prospects head back to school for their senior year, it always presents more of a challenge to sign them after the year ends. With just a few more months to wait until free agency, a player like Petersen could—though he has never indicated a desire to—open up the market to at least a dozen teams that would be after him.

Morning Notes: Crosby, Ovechkin, Sabres Search

After skating on his own yesterday, Sidney Crosby was back at Penguins’ practice today in a regular jersey and looks poised to return to the lineup tomorrow night in Washington. If he does, it would be just five days since suffering a concussion due to Matt Niskanen’s cross-check on Monday night. The idea of returning so quickly may be familiar to Penguins fans that remember Crosby’s first concussion. After being hit by David Steckel in the 2010-11 Winter Classic, Crosby would return just a few days later to face the Tampa Bay Lightning.  After another (much less violent) hit from Victor Hedman, he’d lose the rest of the season and part of the next year.

While obviously if he’s returning it means that the Pittsburgh medical staff has signed off, returning so soon is still a risk for the Penguins’ captain. His history with head injuries is getting longer and longer, and there have been many instances around the league of players coming back too soon, only to have symptoms return. Here’s hoping that Crosby is 100% ready, and not being rushed back in order to give the Penguins a better chance for the Stanley Cup.

  • The Washington Capitals will try Alex Ovechkin on the third line tomorrow, moving him down in an attempt to spread out their offense. Washington has only been able to score more than two goals once in the series, and even had trouble scoring in their first-round matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite out-shooting their opponent consistently, the Capitals just can’t seem to find the back of the net. Putting Ovechkin with Lars Eller and Tom Wilson may seem like a desperation move, but perhaps it will spark something in the team as they fight for their playoff lives.
  • The Buffalo Sabres GM search continues, and according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet (via a Chris Nichols transcription on FanRag) they have asked at least one candidate if they would be comfortable with the team installing a President of Hockey Operations after taking the job. As discussed this week, many around the league believe Buffalo should follow the design of teams like the Calgary Flames, who have an experienced GM sitting behind a less-experienced man holding the position. While Buffalo tried this with Pat LaFontaine at one point, disagreements led to the dissolving of the President position and Tim Murray retaining whole control.

Vegas Golden Knights Pursuing Evgeni Dadonov

According to Igor Eronko of Sport-Express, the Vegas Golden Knights might not be finished shopping in St. Petersburg. Eronko reports that the Golden Knights are trying to sign Evgeni Dadonov, the 28-year old winger that played this season alongside their latest signing Vadim Shipachyov.

Dadonov is the younger of the two KHL forwards, and also had an outstanding season offensively. With 66 points in 53 games, the former Florida Panthers draft pick has hit his stride and would likely have interest from all around the league should his price tag be set reasonably. That’s up for debate, as the last report had him looking for something around $3.5MM per season. While he may be worth that, it’s still up in the air whether his style will translate effectively to the NHL at all.

Both Dadonov and Shipachyov are currently playing for Russia at the World Championships, providing an interesting opportunity for NHL GMs to see them up close and in action against some of the best players in the world. It would definitely be interesting to see a Russian pairing on the top line for Vegas as they try to sell new hockey fans in their expansion market.

Vadim Shipachyov Turned Down $20MM Offer From KHL

The Vegas Golden Knights signed their second player in franchise history last night, inking Russian playmaker Vadim Shipachyov to a two-year, $9MM deal. It had been rumored for months that Shipachyov wanted to come to North America, but his old KHL squad did everything they could to keep him around. Eric Engels of Sportsnet reports that SKA St. Petersburg offered a four-year, $20MM deal to try and tempt him to stay in Russia. Apparently that wasn’t enough, as he decided to come to the NHL for less than half, albeit with a chance to hit the open market again at 32.

Engels also reports that though both sides have long said they weren’t interested in each other, the Shipachyov camp were in contract with the Montreal Canadiens as recently as ten days ago. Apparently Montreal didn’t want to offer more than the $9MM deal he ended up signing, or perhaps there were other reasons for heading to Vegas. Shipachyov will likely be their best player among a forward group that will include a lot of youth and a lot of declining talent. He’ll certainly get his chance to shine, centering one of the top two lines and likely playing on the power play.

St. Petersburg could be watching several players leave this summer, as Ilya Kovalchuk and Evgeni Dadonov are both rumored to also be heading back to the NHL. The team has just acquired the rights to Nail Yakupov though, and Shipachyov’s decision to sign in the NHL may put even more pressure on the squad to try and convince the former first-overall pick to return to Russia.

Pittsburgh Penguins Recall Eleven Players

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made their “Black Aces” call-ups, bringing eleven players up from the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The players are as follows:

D Frank Corrado
F Tom Sestito
F Dominik Simon
F Jean-Sebastien Dea
F Garrett Wilson
F Kevin Porter

In addition, Daniel Sprong has also been recalled. Sprong had been playing with the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. Sprong has one of the more interesting histories among young players, spending 18 games with the Penguins last year before going back to junior. That stint—combined with 12 healthy scratches peppered throughout—kicked Sprong’s entry-level deal into effect, which will make him a restricted free agent after next season despite spending this entire year in junior.

The second-round pick has continued to show that he’s ready for the next step in his hockey career, but will likely not get into any action with the Penguins during these playoffs. Instead, all of the players called up today will skate with the team and provide insurance should multiple injuries strike at the same time.

Golden Knights Sign Vadim Shipachyov

The Vegas Golden Knights have made their first big player acquisition, signing KHL star Vadim Shipachyov to a two-year contract.

Shipachyov will make $4.5MM per season, per the team’s media release. He joins rookie pro and former Brandon Wheat King center Reid Duke as the only two players currently under contract by the expansion Golden Knights franchise.

The 30-year-old center is a legitimate scoring threat in Russia, having scored 26 goals and 50 assists for 76 points in 50 games this season for SKA St. Petersburg. That was good for third in the KHL and second on SKA, behind only Ilya Kovalchuk. In Shipachyov’s nine-year career in the KHL, he has 137 goals and 412 points in 445 games. His points-per-game is slightly lessened by his early years; he’s scored 190 points in 153 games over the last three years. SKA has won the Gagarin Cup twice in those seasons.

Shipachyov is a highly-skilled offensive player, but isn’t a big body at 6’1, 190 lbs. Here’s how he’s described by Elite Prospects:

Shipachyov is a skilled center with excellent on-ice vision. He skates very well and with a fluid stride. Owns great offensive instincts and likes to have the puck on his stick. Could improve his all-around game. Isn’t overly efficient in physical battles.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported back in March that Vegas was exploring the possibility of signing the highly sought-after Russian star and his SKA teammate Yegveni Dadonov.

Even though this is Shipachyov’s first contract with an NHL club, he’s too old to sign an entry-level contract and will be a UFA at the expiry of the two-year deal, according to Cap Friendly. No word yet if he’ll wear his usual number 87 in the NHL. Only Sidney Crosby and Capitals minor-leaguer Liam O’Brien currently wear the number.

Shipachyov is currently with the Team Russia at the IIHF World Championships in Colonge, Germany.

Blade Jenkins De-Commits From U. Of Michigan, Signs With OHL’s Saginaw Spirit

A few different organizations in the world of hockey development were shaken up today as aptly-named 2018 NHL Draft prospect Blade Jenkins announced that he had signed with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League. Jenkins had been selected fourth overall in the 2016 OHL Draft by Saginaw, but played this past season with the United States National Development Program U-17 Team.

For Saginaw, this is a major transaction. The team took a big risk last year in drafting Jenkins, who they had no guarantee would ever play for them. A Jackson, Michigan native, Jenkins had committed first to the U.S. National Team and second to the flagship school of his state, the University of Michigan. It is not often that American players who have committed to play college hockey instead choose to play Canadian juniors, but Jenkins is an exception. It may have helped that Saginaw is in fact an American-based team in Saginaw, Michigan, less than two hours from his home in Jackson and less than an hour further than Ann Arbor, where he would have gone to college.

Saginaw’s gain is the Michigan Wolverines’ loss, as NCAA bylaws prohibit Canadian major junior players from ever later playing college hockey. In an effort to preserve “amateurism”, a choice must be made and Jenkins decided he wanted to play at a higher level of hockey sooner rather than later, opting to join the Spirit for 2017-18 rather than join the Wolverines in 2018-19. This also means that the U.S. U-18 team will also have to adjust, as they planned on having Jenkins around next season.

Jenkins, who is still just 16 years old and already 6’0″ and 172 lbs., is developing into a big, two-way center. Jenkins earned his OHL draft slot and U-17 roster spot after scoring 36 points in 22 games at the midget level in 2015-16 and adding some noteworthy tournament performance along the way. Yet, in his first season playing against high-end competition, the offense disappeared as he had just eight points in 56 games. Jenkins is still very raw and has quite a bit of developing to do, but has the physical tools to become an elite player down the road. Saginaw hopes that he can begin to develop into that future star in 2017-18 after inking an unlikely contract today.

Players To Watch In Upcoming QMJHL Finals

With the Ontario Hockey League final series getting underway tonight, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is awaiting its own championship kick-off tomorrow. The winners of both series, while league champions in their own right, also earn a spot in the Memorial Cup Tournament, where they’ll try to assert themselves as the top team in all of Canadian junior hockey.

While the QMJHL doesn’t feature quite as much star power as its OHL counterpart this year, there are plenty of names taking part in the finals who could be making an impact in the NHL as soon as next season. Behind a stalwart defensive pair and consistent scoring, the Saint John Sea Dogs cruised to a 48-14-5 record in 2016-17, which gave them the regular season crown by a whole nine points over the closest contender. The Sea Dogs’ impressive pace has not slowed down at all in the postseason; they went 12-1-1 on their way to a title berth. Now, Saint John has to get the job done when it matters most, as they know too well what falling short feels like after a semifinal exit last season. Their opposition for the championship is the upstart Blainville-Boisbriand Armanda. The Armada finished second in the West Division behind defending champion Rouyn-Noranda, but had the fourth-best record in the league at 43-19-4. Armed with two elite trade acquisitions, the Armanda charged through the playoffs and capped off their run to the title match-up with an upset over the #3-seed Charlottetown Islanders.

These two teams have been nearly unstoppable in the QMJHL playoffs and are charged up and ready to go. Who should you keep an eye on when the series starts tomorrow?

Pierre-Luc Dubois, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada/Columbus Blue Jackets

A player who most hockey fans have heard of by now, Dubois was the third overall pick in the NHL Draft last June by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Although many expected that he would make the team out of camp, the Blue Jackets brass felt he was not ready and returned the young center to his junior team, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Although he scored 18 points in his first 20 games of the season, it was far off his pace from 2015-16, when he finished with 99 points in 62 contests. Cape Breton decided to trade Dubois to Blainville-Boisbriand for a package that included two high draft picks. Dubois returned to his high-scoring ways with the Armada, posting 37 points in 28 regular season games and added 21 more through 15 postseason games thus far. Dubois is a well-rounded player with great offensive skill and strong two-way ability. If the Armada hope to knock off the Sea Dogs, Dubois will have to be the difference-maker.

Thomas Chabot, Saint John Sea Dogs/Ottawa Senators

Another star prospect many felt would be in the NHL this season, 2015 first-round pick Chabot has instead dominated the QMJHL since returning from his brief stint – one game played, -2 rating – with Ottawa earlier this season. An excellent possession defenseman who has speed and puck-moving ability, Chabot racks up the points from the blue line. In 34 regular season games in 2016-17, he accumulated 45 points. He also took a brief break to dominate the World Juniors with ten points in seven games as the alternate captain for Team Canada. Yet, he has still been able to take his game up a notch in the playoffs, posting 19 points in 14 games. Not only does that top all defensemen in the postseason, it’s also good enough for ninth overall. Chabot is a difficult player to match up against and will likely continue to score in the upcoming final series as he works to win a championship for the team he has played for since 2013.

Mathieu Joseph, Sain John Sea Dogs/Tampa Bay Lightning

GM Steve Yzerman picked a good one in the fourth round in 2015, as Joseph has been a revelation for Saint John the past two seasons. A multi-skilled winger who apparently was just slow to develop, Joseph went from a 42-point campaign in 2014-15 to 73 last year and 80 this year. Centered by recent Chicago Blackhawks signee Matthew Highmore, Joseph put up career numbers and finished tied for 12th in scoring in the QMJHL. To top off an incredible season, Joseph is second in postseason scoring with eleven goals and eleven assists already through just 14 games. No one has slowed Joseph down thus far and the Armada have their work cut out for them.

Alex Barre-Boulet, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada

The only player scoring more than Joseph in the postseason has been Barre-Boulet. Passed up in the NHL Draft last year, the small, shifty center has done just about everything possible to make sure that doesn’t happen again. After scoring 89 points in 65 games last year for the Drummondville Voltigeurs was not enough, Barre-Boulet requested a trade midway through the season to a team with championship hopes in an effort to extend his season. Adding on to his 48 points from Drummondville, he registered 33 points in the Armada’s final 28 games and finished 11th in league scoring with 81 points total. In the playoffs though, he is alone in first by quite a margin. Barre-Boulet has 29 points, including 13 on the power play, in just 16 games. A player with a point to make, unlike many of the top players in the series, Barre-Boulet will perhaps be the most dangerous competitor that Saint John has to face.

Jakub Zboril, Saint John Sea Dogs/Boston Bruins

Luckily, the Sea Dogs have had an answer for some of the top offensive talent in the QMJHL this year (and last year and the year before that) in Czech defenseman Zboril. A 2015 first-round pick of the Bruins, Zboril is known as one of the best two-way defenseman in the league. A dominant force in the neutral zone, Zboril can carry the puck and fire a hard shot on goal and then speed back to his own end for a hard check as well. In a league that has historically been fast-moving and high-offense, Zboril has helped to keep scoring down in Saint John for the visitors. He also gets on the board himself with 41 points in 50 games this season. One of a number of elite Boston defensive prospects, enjoy Zboril dominating the juniors while you can, because he’ll be turning pro after the season.

Julien Gauthier, Saint John Sea Dogs/Carolina Hurricanes

The rich got richer at the QMJHL Trade Deadline this season as the Sea Dogs acquired 2016 Carolina first-rounder Gauthier from the Val-d’Or Foreurs. A big power forward who isn’t afraid to use his 6’4″, 225-lb. frame, but also has a surprising finesse game, Gauthier is a valuable weapon. However, while he managed to score more than a point per game for both Val-d’Or and Saint John en route to a 51-point season, the Sea Dogs know that Gauthier has more to offer. With 11 points in 14 postseason games, he’s made his presence felt, but if Gauthier plays to his potential in this final series, he could really tip the scales in Saint John’s favor.
