Minor Transactions: 02/05/17
On what is sure to be a slow Super Bowl Sunday, we’ll keep all the minor news right here:
- The Columbus Blue Jackets have returned Markus Hannikainen to the Cleveland Monsters just a day after bringing him up. The 23-year old winger was an emergency recall and got into the game last night against the New Jersey Devils. He’s played in seven contests for the Jackets this year as he bounces up and down between leagues, scoring one goal.
- Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that Frank Corrado has cleared waivers for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and will be assigned to the AHL Marlies. We wrote yesterday about how the Alexey Marchenko claiming impacted the right-hand depth of the Maple Leafs, of which Corrado was a part.
- McKenzie also tells us that Nashville has placed Derek Grant on waivers, likely due to the acquisition of Vernon Fiddler yesterday. Grant has played just six games for Nashville since being selected off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres less than a month ago.
- The Devils have sent Karl Stollery to Albany for the time being, after bringing him up just a week ago. The defenseman has bounced up and down all season long, playing nine games for the big-league Devils so far.
- Per the AHL Transactions page, the Sharks assigned forwards Timo Meier and Kevin Labanc as well as defenseman Tim Heed to the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. It’s highly likely that all three will be recalled in advance of their next game on Tuesday; San Jose has routinely been shuffling them back and forth between the NHL and the minors in an effort to save a bit of cap space.
- Also via the AHL Transactions page, Nashville has swapped backup goalies once again, recalling Jusse Saros and assigning Marek Mazanec to AHL Milwaukee. Saros had been sent down to get in a game with the Admirals on Saturday night as he last saw NHL action back on January 24th.
- Following their game against Montreal, the Oilers announced (Twitter link) they have assigned defensemen Jordan Oesterle and Griffin Reinhart, as well as center Anton Lander, to Bakersfield (AHL). Oesterle made his season debut on Sunday while Lander saw his first NHL action in over three weeks; Reinhart was a healthy scratch.
What Alexey Marchenko Means For Roman Polak
On Saturday morning, it was announced that the Toronto Maple Leafs had claimed Alexey Marchenko from the Detroit Red Wings. While that headline isn’t the blockbuster we’ve been waiting for, it does have some impact on a team that is still deciding what to do at the quickly approaching deadline.
The Maple Leafs placed the much discussed Frank Corrado on waivers in a corresponding move, possibly ending the defenseman’s tenure in Toronto. Corrado hasn’t played much this year, getting into just two games with the NHL club and seven on an AHL conditioning stint. Clearly in head coach Mike Babcock’s doghouse since he came to Toronto, the team has been looking for a right-handed upgrade for a long time.
Marchenko has ties to Babcock from his days in Detroit, though not many. The 25-year old got into just 14 games while Babcock was coaching. It is that familiarity though that has some people saying that he’ll jump into the lineup (at least on a part-time basis) instead of Roman Polak. James Mirtle of the Athletic was on TSN 1050 today and related his thoughts on the matter.
He’s going to play him. The fact that he’s going to play another right defenseman means Roman Polak is going to be sitting out games, and they can look to trade him at some point.
Maybe they play Polak until the deadline, and then they move him…and now they’ve got Marchenko that can slide into those minutes.
The idea that Polak would be moved out of Toronto for the second time in two years is a persistent one in Toronto, as he continues to struggle when paired with Matt Hunwick in all situations other than the penalty kill. While he brought back a pair of second-round picks (when combined with Nick Spaling) last season, it would be surprising to see the Leafs receive anything like that this time around. Polak doess bring a physical presence and the experience of a long Stanley Cup run last season with San Jose, still valued attributes around the league.
For the Maple Leafs, it’s not clear whether they would want to add, sell or just stay the course with a team that is unexpectedly vying for a playoff spot this season. The plan has always been to build slow through the draft, but with the Atlantic Division wide open they have a chance at a playoff seed as soon as this year. Keeping Polak for their push might be beneficial in the long run; this team will be extremely inexperienced if they do make it, as even their veterans haven’t seen more than a handful of playoff games.
We’ll see soon enough how Mike Babcock is leaning, as the Maple Leafs don’t have a second to breathe. After tonight in Boston, they have four more games in seven days including rematches against the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues, both clubs that destroyed them this week. If Marchenko gets into the lineup for Polak right away, start looking around to see where he might fit around the league. Lou Lamoriello is known for getting his work done a little early, and the Leafs may pull the trigger quicker than you expect.
Maple Leafs Claim Alexey Marchenko From Red Wings
According to Chris Johnston’s tweet, the Toronto Maple Leafs have claimed Alexey Marchenko off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit placed him on waivers yesterday due to a roster crunch with the return of defenseman Brendan Smith from injury. Johnston also tweets that the Leafs waived Frank Corrado after picking up Marchenko. According to Cap Friendly, Corrado is given Non-Roster status until he is claimed or passes through waivers.
Marchenko played 30 games this season for the Wings, but fell out of favor after the emergence of Nick Jensen. Marchenko who suffered an injury, never found his way back into the lineup and had been a healthy scratch. In 30 games, Marchenko had six assists with as many points. He is also a +6.
The Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James reported that Red Wings general manager Ken Holland indicated someone had to go with Smith and Jimmy Howard returning soon. Corrado, meanwhile, had been cemented in Mike Babcock’s doghouse, playing only two games this season. His release does not come as a surprise. James Mirtle tweets that the acquisition of Marchenko is an upgrade for the Maple Leafs at only 25 years old. Babcock is also familiar with Marchenko from his days in Detroit.
Ribeiro, Marchenko On Waivers; Three Players Clear
The Nashville Predators have placed center Mike Ribeiro on waivers, according to Adam Vingan of The Tennessean.
We reported earlier this morning that Ribeiro may have asked for a trade out of Nashville. He was a healthy scratch for the Predators past three games and five of their past 11. Ribeiro has four goals and 25 points in 46 games so far this season. This is his third year in Nashville, but the first year he’s struggled to produce. Ribeiro had 62 and 50 points in his first two seasons in Nashville. The first sign of trouble was likely in the playoffs last season, when he was a healthy scratch twice while posting just two assists in 12 games. Vingan writes that Ribeiro is the most sheltered player in the NHL this season, starting more than half his shifts in the offensive zone. When Vingan asked coach Peter Laviolette about Ribeiro, all he said was “he’s a member of our team.” That’s not exactly a vote of confidence.
In addition, the Detroit Red Wings have placed Alexey Marchenko on waivers, per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. Marchenko has six assists in 30 games with the Red Wings this season. He also represented Russia at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. The right-handed Marchenko is on waivers to make room for defenseman Brendan Smith, who will be activated off IR tomorrow, according to Ansar Khan of MLive.com.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Devils tough guy Luke Gazdic, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Eric Gelinas, and the Buffalo Sabres center Cal O’Reilly all cleared waivers.
Gazdic signed with the Devils as a free agent back in July. He had spent the previous few seasons in Edmonton, and actually lived with superstar Taylor Hall, who was traded to New Jersey just days before Gazdic signed a one-year, two-way contract worth $700K. He has no points and 12 PIM in 10 games with the Devils so far. He has two assists in 13 AHL games this season. He’s already cleared waivers once this season.
Gelinas, a former Devil, was traded to Colorado for a third round pick at last year’s trade deadline. He has a single assist in 26 games. His $1.575MM contract is likely why he cleared waivers. Should he be assigned to the AHL, he’ll account for $625K on the Avalanche’s salary cap. Gelinas’ roster spot will likely go to Mark Barberio, who was claimed off waivers from Montreal on Thursday.
O’Reilly is the older brother of Sabres’ star Ryan O’Reilly. He has one assist in 11 games, but is much better at the AHL level. He has 34 points (8-26-34) in 36 games. ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reported Buffalo is looking for an upgrade at the fourth line center position (which O’Reilly had been occupying) via the trade market.
Cal O’Reilly, Luke Gazdic, And Eric Gelinas Placed On Waivers
A trio of players are entering their second stints on the waiver wire as center Cal O’Reilly (Buffalo), winger Luke Gazdic (New Jersey), and defenseman Eric Gelinas (Colorado) have all been placed on waivers today, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston (Twitter link).
O’Reilly has played in 11 games with the Sabres this season, recording an assist along with a -6 rating while playing just under eight minutes per game. He also won 48.5% of his faceoffs, slightly above his career average of 46.6%. He has fared much better at the minor league level with Rochester, scoring 34 points (8-26-34) in 36 games. The 30 year old has 144 career games of NHL experience with the Predators, Coyotes, Penguins, and Sabres, recording 49 points (16-33-49). ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun adds via Twitter that Buffalo is looking for an upgrade at the fourth line center position (which O’Reilly had been occupying) via the trade market.
Gazdic has seen action in ten games with the Devils since being recalled in late December. The enforcer was held off the scoresheet while recording 12 penalty minutes and 14 hits. He also has played in 13 games with AHL Albany, picking up a pair of helpers along with 19 penalty minutes. Andrew Gross of Fire and Ice notes (Twitter link) that it’s not a guarantee that he will be sent back down if he clears. Assuming he does pass through unclaimed, he could remain with the Devils for 30 days or 10 games without having to go through waivers again. The 27 year old has played in 146 NHL games in his career (mostly with Edmonton), collecting eight points (5-3-8) along with 206 penalty minutes and 214 hits.
As for Gelinas, he has remained at the NHL level all season despite clearing waivers back on December 1st. He has suited up in 26 games with the Avalanche this year, recording just a single assist while averaging just under 12 minutes per game, not the type of production they were seeking when they dealt a third round pick to New Jersey for him at the trade deadline last season. With a cap hit of $1.575MM, he’s likely to clear. His spot on the roster will likely go to Mark Barberio, who was claimed off waivers from Montreal earlier today.
Still with the waiver wire, Kings defenseman Tom Gilbert passed through unclaimed, James Mirtle of The Athletic reports via Twitter. The team announced (Twitter link) that he was assigned to Ontario of the OHL.
Avalanche Claim Mark Barberio Off Waivers From Montreal
The Colorado Avalanche have claimed defenseman Mark Barberio off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston (Twitter link).
Barberio was waived back in training camp but passed through unclaimed at the time. Since he had been on Montreal’s roster for more than 30 days while playing in more than 10 games, they had to re-waive him in order to try to send him back to the minors. Their acquisition of Nikita Nesterov from Tampa Bay last week made him expendable.
The 26 year old has played in 26 games with the Canadiens this season, recording four assists while averaging 15:07 of ice time per night. He also has the second CF% of anyone on the team, coming in at a strong 55.1.
In his career, Barberio has played in 159 NHL games between the Canadiens and Lightning, recording eight goals and 23 assists while logging 15:29 of ice time per game. He’s in the first season of a two year, one-way deal that carries a $750K cap hit.
He did last too long on the waiver wire this time around as the Avalanche have top waiver priority by virtue of them being last in the NHL standings. With Colorado, Barberio will likely contend for a third pairing role on a team that isn’t the deepest on the back end. He’ll likely take the place of defenseman Eric Gelinas, who was one of a trio of players placed on waivers today.
Minor Transactions: 2/1/2017
Here’s where we will track the day’s less significant roster transactions:
- The Columbus Blue Jackets reassigned defenseman Dean Kukan to the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL, according to The Columbus Dispatch’s Aaron Portzline (via Twitter). The 23-year-old blue liner was recalled Sunday but did not appear in the Jackets wild 6 – 4 win over the New York Rangers last night. He appeared in eight games last season, his first in the NHL, but failed to register a point. The Swiss-born Kukan signed a deal with Columbus prior to the 2015-16 season after a lengthy pro career playing in his home country. In 37 games this year with Cleveland, Kukan has 13 points.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE has relayed that Zane McIntyre has been recalled by the Boston Bruins to replace Anton Khudobin as the team’s backup netminder. The Bruins are desperate for quality play in goal behind starter Tuukka Rask. McIntyre and Khudobin have combined to post a woeful record of 1 – 8 – 2 in 15 appearances with a GAA of 3.42 and a S% of 0.875. Boston has just two back-to-backs scheduled this month, suggesting they won’t have to rely on their backup much, provided Rask remains healthy.
- Defenseman Dylan McIlrath and forward Paul Thompson, each of whom was placed on waivers by Florida yesterday, went unclaimed and will remain in the Florida Panthers organization, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. George Richards, who covers the Panthers for the Miami Herald, later added that McIlrath was reassigned to Springfield, along with forward Jared McCann. McIlrath, acquired earlier this season from the New York Rangers, has seen action in just five games for Florida this season. The former first-round draft pick has had trouble earning regular playing time. Thompson, 28, has played in 21 games for the Panthers, registering three assists while averaging less than eight minutes per game.
- The Washington Capitals returned blue liner Christian Djoos to Hershey of the AHL, reports Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Mid-Atlantic. Djoos was Washington’s seventh-round selection in the 2012 entry draft and has yet to debut in the NHL. He’s in the midst of a solid season for Hershey, tallying 26 points in 35 AHL contests.
Barberio And Gilbert Placed On Waivers
The Los Angeles Kings and Montreal Canadiens are making waiver moves on Wednesday morning. Defensemen Tom Gilbert and Mark Barberio are both on waivers, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Gilbert has five points in 18 games with the Kings so far this season, his first in Los Angeles. He has been in and out of the lineup all season. Gilbert spent the previous two seasons in Montreal, after bouncing around between Minnesota and Florida. He’s perhaps best known for his time in Edmonton, where he developed into a solid top-four defenseman. Gilbert has 223 points in 655 games in the NHL, including a career-high 45-point season with Edmonton in 2008-09, before being traded to the Wild at the 2012 trade deadline for Nick Schultz. Gilbert missed the end of last season with knee-surgery. He’s a bottom-pairing defenseman at this point, and may have to go to the AHL and work his way back to the NHL.
Barberio has four assists in 26 games this season with the Canadiens. This is his second season in Montreal; he had two goals and 10 points in 30 games with the Canadiens last season. Barberio was a free agent signing from the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he had 17 points in 103 games over three seasons. Pierre LeBrun of TSN and ESPN called Barberio a sixth or seventh defenseman who can skate and move the puck; LeBrun wouldn’t be surprised to see a team take a flyer on Barberio. The Canadiens recently acquired defenseman Nikita Nesterov from the Lightning, making Barberio expendable. If he clears, Barberio will be assigned to the St. John’s of the AHL.
In other waiver news, Florida Panthers Dylan McIlrath and Paul Thompson both cleared waivers.
Panthers Waive Paul Thompson And Dylan McIlrath
The Florida Panthers will be changing up their roster coming out of the All-Star break as the team has waived right winger Paul Thompson and defenseman Dylan McIlrath, Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel reports (Twitter link).
The 28 year old Thompson was acquired from New Jersey last offseason as part of the deal that saw the Panthers unload Marc Savard‘s contract. He has played in 21 games for Florida this season, recording three assists, 22 penalty minutes, and a -4 rating while averaging just 7:54 per night. He is earning $575K at the NHL level and $225K in the AHL and is in the final year of a two year deal signed back in July of 2015. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
As for McIlrath, Florida acquired him back in November from the Rangers in exchange for blueliner Steven Kampfer and a 2018 7th round pick. He has played in just five games with the Panthers since then, picking up a goal and ten penalty minutes while playing only 9:34 per contests. This marks the second time he has been waived this season as New York waived him back in October where he passed through unclaimed.
The former 2010 first rounder (tenth overall) also has seen action in six AHL contests with Florida’s AHL affiliate in Springfield, recording two points (1-1-2) and 13 penalty minutes. He carries a salary and cap hit of $800K this season and will be a restricted free agent afterwards.

Canadiens Notes: Nesterov, Pateryn, Desharnais, Markov
Just before the All-Star break, the Montreal Canadiens pulled off a trade to add needed defensive depth, acquiring Nikita Nesterov for a prospect and late draft choice in 2017. It won’t take long for the team to see what they have in the 23-year-old blue liner as it appears as if he is set to make his Habs debut tomorrow night, tweets Amanda Stein of TSN 690. His new teammate, Andrei Markov, offered a brief scouting report (H/T to the Candiens Twitter account) on Nesterov, saying the latter will be a good fit for the Canadiens and calling him a good skater with a good first pass.
Nesterov contributed 12 points in 35 games for Tampa and recorded solid possession numbers, with the Lighting controlling better than 54% of the shot attempts while he was on the ice. Given his usage – he averaged just 16:35 a night mostly as a third-pair defender – those numbers look even better. If Markov is right, the Canadiens may have added a solid depth piece on the cheap.
In other Canadiens-related news:
- TSN’s John Lu, via Twitter, updates the injury situations of David Desharnais and Markov. Habs bench boss Michel Therrien indicated both players will be evaluated Tuesday but “both look good” as it pertains to returning to the lineup. Stein adds in another tweet that Therrien wants to sit down with each before making a decision on their availability.
- Therrien also says Greg Pateryn, who has been out since early December with a fractured ankle, needs more time according to yet an another tweet from Stein. Pateryn’s pending return, with the assumption that Markov will be back this week, creates a bit of a log jam on the blue line and that may well have played a role in the team placing Zach Redmond on waivers earlier today. Even without Redmond the Habs will have eight healthy defensemen for six regular spots.
