Nicolas Hague Remains Day-To-Day

Mollie Walker of New York Post Sports reports that New York Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey has been upgraded from a non-contact jersey and skated in a regular one today at Rangers practice. The 31-year-old sustained a lower-body injury during the preseason and has yet to dress in a regular game after playing 80 games last season and 81 the year before.

The Boston, Massachusetts native only resumed skating last Thursday and could play at some point this week if he progresses. New York has been using a revolving group of forwards in Vesey’s absence and re-called Matt Rempe yesterday from Hartford to presumably fill in until Vesey is ready to return.

In other evening notes:

  • Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague remains day to day with a lower-body injury (as per Jesse Granger of The Athletic). The 25-year-old was injured in the second period of Friday night’s 6-4 win over the Ottawa Senators after scoring his first goal of the season earlier in the game. Kaedan Korczak replaced Hague on Saturday against San Jose, and it appears as though Hague will miss tonight’s game against Calgary. Hague has a single point on the season in eight games and has struggled to start the year as his possession numbers have been abysmal with a 37.8 CF% at even strength (as per Hockey Reference).
  • St. Louis Blues forward Mathieu Joseph will be returning to St. Louis to be evaluated after he suffered a lower-body injury in Saturday’s 5-2 loss to Montreal (as per Matthew DeFranks of the St. Louis Post Dispatch). Joseph will reportedly miss the remainder of the Blues road trip which sees them in Ottawa tomorrow night and Philadelphia on Thursday. Joseph has had a decent start in his first season with St. Louis posting two goals and two assists in nine games while being one of the team’s top penalty-killing options.

Golden Knights Activate William Karlsson, Move Victor Olofsson To IR

The Golden Knights activated center William Karlsson from injured reserve before last night’s win over the Sharks, per the NHL’s media portal, and as evidenced by his pair of points in his season debut. Right-winger Victor Olofsson was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

It’s all good news for Vegas, as Olofsson was already listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury. His IR placement is retroactive to Oct. 15, so he can come off IR anytime. The transaction doesn’t impact his timeline for a return in the slightest.

Karlsson’s return is a significant boon to a Golden Knights squad already leading the league with 4.67 goals per game. After yesterday’s 7-3 thrashing of San Jose, Vegas sits atop the Pacific Division with a 6-2-1 record and a +14 goal differential, third in the league behind the Rangers and Jets. Captain Mark Stone leads the league outright in scoring with 17 points (4 G, 13 A) in nine games, while Jack Eichel is tied for second with 15 points (3 G, 12 A). Vegas’ stars have been dominant enough early on to quiet any concerns about the significant hits to their depth scoring over the offseason. However, players like Brett Howden (five goals) and Pavel Dorofeyev (seven points) are also doing their part as they settle into consistent top-nine roles.

The 31-year-old Karlsson is one of two expansion draft selections remaining on Vegas’ roster, joining defenseman Brayden McNabb. Now in his eighth season with the team and his 11th NHL campaign overall, he’s coming off his best offensive showing since his unfathomable 43-goal, 78-point breakout during the Knights’ inaugural season. Last year marked the first time he’d hit the 30-goal and 60-point plateaus since then, and he also won a career-best 56.2% of his draws. Karlsson’s possession metrics remained strong, logging a 51.8 CF% and 57.1 xGF% with 46 blocked shots, placing 18th in Selke Trophy voting. It was the first time he’d received consideration for the award since the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns.

With Karlsson back, Vegas has its full complement of centers – Eichel on line one, Tomáš Hertl on line two, Karlsson on line three, and Nicolas Roy on line four. That’s a rare sight for a team that’s been plagued by its big-name forwards missing significant time with injuries over the past few seasons. For now, though, they have no restrictions up front aside from Olofsson’s absence and remain out of LTIR.

Karlsson had been out of action since the Knights’ exhibition schedule with an undisclosed injury.

Lower-Body Injury For Hague

  • Golden Knights defenseman Nic Hague left yesterday’s game with a lower-body injury but it doesn’t appear that it’s particularly serious. Speaking with reporters postgame including Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, head coach Bruce Cassidy wasn’t able to rule the blueliner in or out for their game tonight against San Jose.  Hague has one goal in eight games so far this season, that coming last night against Ottawa.

Karlsson Expected To Return Saturday

The Golden Knights appear to be set to welcome back a key contributor up front.  Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal relays that Vegas is aiming to activate center William Karlsson to their active roster for Saturday’s contest against San Jose.  The 31-year-old has yet to play this season due to an undisclosed injury.  Karlsson is coming off one of his best seasons offensively as he notched 30 goals and 30 assists in 70 games while he also won 56.2% of his faceoffs, the best rate of his career.  Notably, the Golden Knights have a full 23-player roster so someone will need to come off in order for Karlsson to be activated; their only waiver-exempt players are forwards Brendan Brisson and Alexander Holtz.

Calen Addison Signs AHL Contract With Henderson

Calen Addison’s stock has certainly taken a hit over the last couple of seasons.  After failing to secure an NHL contract in free agency, he has accepted an AHL one as Henderson, affiliate of the Golden Knights, announced that they’ve signed the blueliner to a one-year deal.

In 2022-23, the 24-year-old picked up 29 points in 62 games with Minnesota and it looked like he at least had found a fit as an offensive-minded depth player.  However, he struggled in the early going last season before being traded to San Jose.  Unfortunately for both him and the Sharks, things didn’t go particularly well for Addison there either.  He managed just one goal and 11 assists in 60 games following the swap and struggled considerably in the defensive end.  That resulted in San Jose deciding to non-tender him in late June.

Addison eventually had to settle for a training camp tryout with Ottawa in early September.  He got into three games with the Sens where he was held off the scoresheet and eventually was released.  Now a couple of weeks into the season, it’s clear there wasn’t an NHL offer on the horizon for him.

Addison has 78 career AHL appearances under his belt and has fared quite well at that level, notching 13 goals and 45 assists in those contests while being named to the All-Rookie Team in 2020-21.  He should be an impactful player for the Silver Knights as well and if he fares well with them, an NHL opportunity could come up later in the season, either with Vegas or elsewhere.

Vegas Golden Knights Sign Shea Theodore To Seven-Year Extension

The Vegas Golden Knights are keeping one of their most important pending unrestricted free agents for the long haul. The team announced they had signed defenseman Shea Theodore to a seven-year contract extension worth $51.975MM, making for an AAV of $7.425MM.  Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic reports that the deal breaks down as follows:

2025-26: $9.5MM
2026-27: $9.5MM
2027-28: $8.6MM
2028-29: $7.275MM
2029-30: $5.7MM
2030-31: $5.7MM
2031-32: $5.7MM

Theodore is one of three original members of the Golden Knights organization left, and this extension will keep him with the team through the 2031-32 NHL season. He was projected to become one of the most sought-after defensemen in free agency next offseason, making this extension somewhat of a hometown discount. Evolving-Hockey projected Theodore to land an eight-year extension worth just over $9MM a season, meaning the Golden Knights will get him for $1.5MM cheaper, with the salary cap continuing to rise.

Part of the lower-than-expected price tag may be due to Theodore’s availability over the last several years. The former 26th overall pick of the 2013 NHL Draft only managed 180 regular-season games for Vegas from 2021 to the end of last season, losing over a quarter of the games due to various injuries. Should his injury history continue into this contract, it could mark one of the riskier extensions of the last year.

Despite the absence due to injuries over the last few years, there is credibility for the Golden Knights, making Theodore their second-highest-paid defenseman. He’s arguably been Vegas’ best offensive weapon from the blue line over his eight-year tenure, scoring 67 goals and 296 points in 450 games, with 88 points from the powerplay.

He hasn’t been a slouch on the other side of the puck, either. Theodore has posted an impressive 58.8 CF% with a 91.0% on-ice save percentage in all situations throughout his time in Sin City, with an expected rating of +78.4, according to Hockey Reference. There’s an argument to be made that much of Theodore’s success in the possession metrics comes from his 63.2% offensive zone start rate, but it wouldn’t excuse all of it from a defenseman who’s averaged nearly 22 minutes of ice time per game.

Starting next season, the Golden Knights will have $23.575MM invested in three defensemen at the top of their lineup. This may prohibit the organization from retaining other pending unrestricted and restricted free agents currently on the roster, but it’s par for the course from one of the league’s most aggressive franchises.

William Karlsson Resumes Skating In Non-Contact Jersey

The Vegas Golden Knights received positive news on the injury front as forward William Karlsson returned to the ice this morning in a non-contact jersey (X Link). He didn’t skate with any of the team’s forward lines suggesting he won’t suit up tomorrow night but a follow-up report indicated he could return to the lineup by Friday.

Karlsson hasn’t skated in a month after suffering an undisclosed injury during the preseason. Aside from vague updates every few weeks, the Golden Knights organization hasn’t offered any specifics about his injury. Since he didn’t factor into any preseason games this September, Karlsson’s last game with Vegas was Game Seven of the team’s Round One series loss against the Dallas Stars in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Karlsson’s imminent return couldn’t come at a better time for the Golden Knights with winger Victor Olofsson going down with a lower-body injury. Vegas may be light up front tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Kings but should have a formidable top-six against the Ottawa Senators on Friday of this week should Karlsson return.

Victor Olofsson Out Week-To-Week With Lower Body Injury

Golden Knights winger Victor Olofsson will be out of action on a week-to-week basis with the lower body injury that’s cost him the last two games, head coach Bruce Cassidy said Monday. He’s not yet on injured reserve, but even if they moved him there, they wouldn’t have the cap space for a call-up unless he was placed on LTIR.

It’s a tough blow for the Knights, who are 3-2-1 through six games and fourth in the Pacific Division. Floating around a wild card spot is what most expected from them after losing a few key forwards, namely Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson, to free agency. But their pedestrian record has nothing to do with a lack of offense. It’s the opposite – their 3.83 GF/GP ranks sixth in the league. It’s subpar possession play and a poor showing from Adin Hill (4 GP, .851 SV%, 3.81 GAA) in goal that’s held them back so far.

Before sustaining his LBI, Olofsson looked like he would be an essential part of Vegas’ secondary scoring after inking a one-year, $1.075MM prove-it deal in free agency. The 29-year-old had managed three goals on 11 shots in four games and averaged over 15 minutes per game, his highest usage in three years. He’d logged significant time on the wing with both Tomáš Hertl and Nicolas Roy, and unlike what we’ve come to expect from Olofsson, his defensive impacts were substantial. His 55.4 CF% at even strength ranks as the team’s best by far, night and day, from his often subpar possession metrics over the first six years of his NHL career with the Sabres.

Last year was especially difficult for Olofsson, who was a frequent healthy scratch and had just seven goals and 15 points in 51 games for Buffalo. While he was never a true top-of-the-lineup player, he could at least score with aplomb, routinely shooting at or around 15% and breaking the 20-goal plateau three times in four years between 2019-20 and 2022-23. If he can get back in the lineup before mid-November, he’s likely got a shot at reaching those totals again in a Vegas sweater.

There hasn’t been a clear direct replacement for Olofsson thus far. Outside of the Golden Knights’ top line of Ivan Barbashev, Jack Eichel, and Mark Stone, their other forward units have been in flux for the first few weeks of the campaign. With center William Karlsson nearing a return from the undisclosed injury that’s cost him all of the season to date, don’t expect a corresponding transaction aside from his activation.

Golden Knights Have Not Started Extension Talks With Adin Hill

Recently, we’ve seen several pending free agent goaltenders sign contract extensions.  Linus Ullmark (four years, $33MM) and Joey Daccord (five years, $25MM) inked new deals to stop them from reaching unrestricted free agency while Jake Oettinger inked an eight-year, $66MM extension over reaching restricted free agency next summer.  Those moves came on the heels of Boston’s signing of Jeremy Swayman to an eight-year, $66MM deal, ending a long stalemate in his trip through restricted free agency.

With Ullmark and Daccord coming off the list of potential UFAs and the Rangers and Igor Shesterkin still plugging away at what’s expected to be a record-setting extension, Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill is poised to be one of the top netminders remaining out of next summer’s crop of goaltenders.  Unlike some of the others, however, don’t expect a new deal for him to come about anytime soon as David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports (Twitter link) that talks on a possible extension aren’t expected to begin until sometime in the new year.

The 28-year-old is in his third season with Vegas and has seen his fortunes change considerably since joining them.  Originally acquired as injury insurance in 2022, he didn’t see a ton of action during the regular season that year but, of course, played an instrumental role in them winning the Stanley Cup.  His performance there helped earn him a two-year, $9.8MM deal, effectively serving as another bridge contract.

Last season, Hill wasn’t able to put up as good of numbers as his first year with the team but he still managed a 2.71 GAA and a .909 SV% in 35 regular season games while playing quite well in his three playoff appearances.  This year, he’s off to more of a sluggish start with a 3.81 GAA and a .851 SV% but only two weeks into the season, things can change quickly.

That said, Hill’s market is likely a bit trickier to determine at this point.  His 35 appearances last season were a career high but is still on the low side compared to most starters.  Between his previous roles and injuries, he has largely been a backup or platoon option.  There is always interest in those types of players but not at a level where he could command considerably more than he’s making now.  Frankly, if he’s viewed league-wide as a platoon player and not a true starter, matching this contract from an AAV perspective could be difficult.

With that in mind, it makes sense for both sides to wait this out for a little while.  If Hill stays healthy and plays like a legitimate starter over the next few months, he’ll have a stronger case in negotiations than he wound now.  Meanwhile, if he falters a little bit, it wouldn’t be shocking if Vegas either came in at a lower number or pushed things back further.

The Golden Knights have had a fair bit of turnover since joining the league with only two netminders spending parts of four years with the team while only five have played more than 35 games.  An extension for Hill would give them some stability at that position but based on this report, it won’t be coming for a while yet.

Pacific Injury Notes: Vlasic, Karlsson, Myers

Veteran San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic told media that he’s hoping to return to action in a few weeks, and described his injury as “upper-body-ish”, shares Curtis Pashelka of The Mercury News. Vlasic has been facing the ailment since the start of training camp, missing the bulk of camp activities and getting placed on injured reserve on October 7th. That’s the same day that he returned to the team’s practices, though he’s made it clear that he’s still a ways out.

Vlasic fell out of the Sharks lineup last season, missing time to both injury and routine healthy scratches. That includes an upper-body injury suffered in February that held Vlasic out for two weeks, though he was able to play in 24 more games before the season ended. He’s popping up on the injury report more and more in his golden years, with multi-week absences in every season since 2019. Once a core fixture of the Sharks blue-line, the 37-year-old Vlasic now sits on the outskirts of the lineup – even when healthy. He’ll first focus on getting back to full health, and then faces a battle with youngsters Jack Thompson and Henry Thrun for depth minutes.

  • Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters that centerman William Karlsson won’t travel with the team on their upcoming three-game road trip, shares Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. His next chance to return will most likely come when the Golden Knights return home on October 22nd, though Cassidy didn’t rule out the possibility of Karlsson joining the team midway through the trip. He was placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury on October 8th. He started training camp healthy, but was quickly bumped out of the lineup by injury and now hasn’t skated since September 26th. Karlsson recorded 60 points, split evenly, in 70 games with the Golden Knights last season. He’ll stand as a pivotal piece of the lineup when he’s back to full health, especially after Chandler Stephenson moved to Seattle and Jonathan Marchessault moved to Nashville this summer.
  • Vancouver Canucks defender Tyler Myers seems to have avoided the worst of things after having his ankle landed on awkwardly in Friday night’s matchup with Philadelphia. Myers needed helped off the ice. Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet designated the defender as day-to-day and shared that he will travel with the team on their upcoming four-game road trip, shares Canucks Army’s Jeff Paterson. Vancouver dodges a blow to their shallowest position group with this news, though Canucks Army’s Clarke Corsan lists Mark Friedman and Erik Brannstrom as potential fill-ins while Myers nurses his ankle.
