Minor Transactions: 10/11/19

Patrick Marleau and Brayden Point sure didn’t seem like they had any rust on them when they returned for San Jose and Tampa Bay last night, both scoring a pair of goals and leading their teams to victory. Thursday was filled with high-scoring matchups and tonight’s action could be the same as six teams battle in three games. The Carolina Hurricanes will welcome in the New York Islanders and try to stay perfect, while the Buffalo Sabres aim to prove their explosive start isn’t a mirage. As teams prepare for tonight and a big weekend around the NHL, we’ll be right here keeping track of all the minor moves.

  • The Winnipeg Jets have returned Sami Niku to the minor leagues, now that both Dmitry Kulikov and Josh Morrissey are back playing. Even with a ravaged defense corps, the Jets have won two games in a row and now sit just a single point behind the St. Louis Blues for first place in the Central Division. Niku, 23, will have to wait patiently for his next opportunity, which will likely come whenever the team faces another injury.
  • Gustav Bouramman has landed on his feet in Sweden after accepting a contract termination earlier this month. The 22-year old defenseman has signed a six-week contract with Farjestad BK of the SHL to cover an injury absence, but will have a chance to earn an extension if he plays well enough. In 23 games with the Iowa Wild last season, Bouramman recorded just two points.
  • With Corey Perry approaching a return, Denis Gurianov has been assigned to the Texas Stars after playing in three games with Dallas to start the year. Gurianov didn’t score, but did get some more valuable development time with the NHL as he looks to take the next step in his career. Selected 12th overall in 2015, Gurianov has played 25 games in the NHL so far.A
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Joseph Blandisi under emergency conditions, returning Andrew Agozzino at the same time. Agozzino played just five shifts (1:44 TOI) in yesterday’s win over the Anaheim Ducks. Blandisi meanwhile played six games with the Penguins last year and has 80 under his belt at the NHL level.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have flipped depth defensemen, recalling Ilya Lyubushkin from Tucson (AHL) and sending Kyle Capobianco to the Roadrunners.  Lyubushkin played in 41 games with the Coyotes last season but was left in the minors to start this season to get some playing time while Capobianco sat as a healthy scratch with the Coyotes.  Now it appears that those roles will be reversed.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights have assigned Nicolas Roy to Chicago of the AHL, reports SinBin.Vegas.  He was called up more than a week ago but didn’t get into any action.  Roy was the key part of the trade return for Erik Haula over the offseason following a strong showing with Carolina’s farm team in the playoffs.  He’ll likely see a big role with the Wolves and should be in line for another recall at some point later on in the season.

Trade Rumors: Pysyk, Goligoski, Flames

The Florida Panthers did not enter this past off-season with all that much space under the salary cap ceiling, yet still went and handed out over $20MM in AAV to Sergei Bobrovsky, Anton Stralman, Brett Connolly, and Noel Acciari. As a result, the team has just $788K in cap leeway and no way to alleviate that pressure without making a move. Seeing as defenseman Mark Pysyk heard his name on the rumor mill last season, when the Panthers had ample cap space, the pressure on him has increased tenfold to prove that he is a valuable contributor to the team and not just $2.73MM in wasted space. Pysyk, an impending unrestricted free agent at year’s end, likes Florida and would like to stay with the team. However, he’ll find it hard to make his case that he should stick around when he is not on the ice. As The Athletic’s George Richards writes, Pysyk has found himself in a unfamiliar spot through the team’s first two games as a healthy scratch. New head coach Joel Quenneville opted to go with MacKenzie Weegar and Josh Brown as his bottom pair to begin the year, leaving Pysyk in the press box. Fortunately for Pysyk, he’s expected back in the lineup on Tuesday according to Quenneville. “He was always in consideration. He has some experience, gives us some versatility on the back end and can play both sides,” the veteran coach remarked. Yet, the trick is that even if Pysyk plays well in his return to the lineup, it doesn’t guarantee his safety from a trade. With his contract expiring, the 27-year-old is an expendable asset, especially for a team that hopes to contend for a playoff spot and could be eyeing cap space to make a trade addition of their own on the blue line later this season. If Pysyk is playing well and drawing attention from other teams, he could very well be on his way out of town. The two-way defender has heard those rumors before though, and all he can do is continue to focus on brining his best to the Panthers’ lineup whenever he’s active in hopes of proving he’s worth more as a long-term fit than as a cap dump.

  • Optimism was high to begin the season in Arizona and Coyotes GM John Chayka isn’t about to overreact to an 0-2 start to the year. However, The Athletic’s Craig Morgan admits that one valuable member of the team could become expendable if the team’s struggled do continue. The status quo has changed for Alex Goligoski, as the veteran defenseman’s No-Movement Clause expired last season and has been replaced with a Modified No-Trade Clause of a mere eight-team no-trade list. Morgan is adamant that the team has shown no desire to move Goligoski to this point, but at 34 years old and with only one year remaining on his contract beyond this season, Goligoski could be more valuable to a contender than to Arizona, especially if this season proves to be yet another step in the rebuilding process rather than the much-awaited jump to contender status. With a field of 22 possible suitors, there would surely be interest in the reliable puck-moving defender, even with his $5.475MM cap hit. The Coyotes hope it doesn’t come to that, but Goligoski will be a name to keep an eye on later this year if Arizona’s season begins to slip away.
  • It’s not strange for a team to be painfully close to the salary cap this season, and the Calgary Flames are just one of many teams who will have to manipulate the cap constantly this season to maintain what little flexibility they have. However, an easier solution would be to trade a high-salary player and Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg writes for SB Nation that the team is actively looking to make a “financially-motivated trade”. The name that has come up in trade conversation for more than a year now is back in the rumor mill already: Michael Frolik. Steinberg notes that Frolik has not looked great through the team’s first two games and his $4.3MM cap hit isn’t earning him the benefit of the doubt. Steinberg believes that the Flames should not hesitate to move Frolik if the opportunity arises, as he feels the likes of Andrew Mangiapane, Tobias Rieder, Austin Czarnik, and Alan Quine could easily make up for Frolik’s absence. If there isn’t a market for Frolik, Steinberg adds that the team could consider moving Mark Jankowski as well. The 25-year-old center is not as much of a salary cap stinger, but Steinberg writes that the drop-off in salary between he and Quine is a larger gap than the drop-off in talent, believing the AHL veteran to be more than capable of taking over for Jankowski. With solid depth to make up for potential trade casualties, the Flames could make a move sooner rather than later and work on banking cap space for later in the year, as the team was criticized for not adding more at the deadline last year ahead of their short-lived playoff run.

Pacific Notes: Coyotes Offense, Eakin, Sheahan, Motte

Having scored just one goal over their first two games, the Arizona Coyotes were definitely hoping for more offense after an offseason where they upgraded in major ways. Despite the slow start in the offensive end, head coach Rick Tocchet said he isn’t worried about the team’s offense yet, according to Matt Layman of AZ Sports.

“I’m not panicking. We’re a good hockey club,” Tocchet said. “These guys worked hard. These are winnable games. It’s a ‘woulda, coulda, shoulda,’ and I don’t play that game. But with a little bit of push here and there for some individuals, we could be 2-0. We need everybody to push a little bit harder, but I thought generally, the team played hard.”

One thing that Tocchet is happy with is the play of the team’s first line of Clayton Keller, Derek Stepan and Phil Kessel, who have already developed chemistry together. Against Boston on Saturday, Kessell and Keller each had five shots on goal each with several close goals. What the team needs to improve is the power play which is 0-for-3 this year and that same power play, coached by new assistant Phil Housley, is just 0-for-6 on faceoffs.

“We haven’t got much set up on the zone time,” Kessel said of the power play. “I mean if you can’t set it up, you’re not going to have much success. So we’ve got to get it set up and work for each other, and hopefully get it going.”

  • The Athletic’s Jesse Granger reports that the Vegas Golden Knights could get one of their injured players back soon. While he is not expected to play Tuesday against Boston, center Cody Eakin skated on his own. Head coach Gerard Gallant said that he could be ready to play after the Boston game. Eakin was expected to center the third line, but when he got hurt, the Golden Knights opted to keep Cody Glass on the roster and promoted him to the second line to center Mark Stone and Max Pacioretty, while shifting Paul Stastny to the third line. With everyone playing well, Eakin might be pushed down to the fourth line now.
  • The Edmonton Journal’s Kurt Leavins writes that the team has really missed center Riley Sheahan and the team is expecting the third-line center back in the lineup soon. With Sheahan out, Leon Draisaitl has had to take full penalty killing duties and has been averaging 26:26 of ATOI in the first two games, something that isn’t sustainable. However, once Sheahan returns, the team must decide whether to remove Colby Cave or Gaetan Haas from the lineup.
  • Postmedia’s Ben Kuzma writes that the Vancouver Canucks could get back forward Tyler Motte soon. The forward was seen practicing in a contact jersey Sunday. The 24-year-old scored nine goals and 16 points in 74 games last season and has provided solid depth on the team’s bottom-six.

Minor Transactions: 10/5/19

The first Saturday in the regular season is a busy one with a total of 26 teams in action.  Accordingly, there figures to be plenty of roster movement throughout the day.  We’ll keep tabs on those moves here as well as other minor moves around the hockey world.

  • The Blackhawks announced (Twitter link) that they have activated center John Quenneville off season-opening IR and assigned him to AHL Rockford. Chicago acquired the 2014 first-round pick from New Jersey back in June for John Hayden with the hopes that a change of scenery could help him take the next step in his development. The Chicago Blackhawks also announced they have returned defenseman Dennis Gilbert to the Rockford Ice Hogs of the AHL in a corresponding roster move. The 22-year-old defenseman was brought on the trip to Prague for the Global Series games and he played in Friday’s game against the Flyers. While he didn’t score any points in 14:57 of playing time, he did have four hits, a block and two shots on goal.
  • As the injuries continue to pile up in Dallas, the Stars have recalled defenseman Joel Hanley and winger Joel L’Esperance, per a team release. Hanley got into 16 games with Dallas last season but was held off the scoresheet in all of them while L’Esperance had the top point-per-game rate with Texas while contributing a pair of goals in 18 NHL contests a year ago.
  • While the Oilers were open to giving Anton Burdasov some AHL games to basically extend his tryout, the Russian winger had other ideas. SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL announced that they’ve signed the 28-year-old to a one-year contract.  Burdasov had 19 goals and 114 PIMS last season with Salavat Yulaev and another good year could get him back on the NHL radar next summer.
  • The Arizona Coyotes announced they have recalled goaltender Antti Raanta from the Tucson Roadrunners. The team’s starting netminder was allowed to go on a conditioning stint before the season started as the team has confidence in backup Darcy Kuemper, but have already decided that one AHL start was all that Raanta needed. He could get the call tonight against the Boston Bruins. Raanta has dealt with several injuries in the past two years and has missed quite a bit of time, but the team is hoping for an injury-free season this year. The Coyotes also returned goalie Adin Hill to Tucson to offset the Raanta move.
  • The San Jose Sharks announced they have placed defenseman Jacob Middleton on long-term injured reserve with an undisclosed injury after leaving Friday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights during the first period. In a corresponding move, the Sharks have recalled defenseman Trevor Carrick from the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL to replace him. The 24-year-old defenseman, who signed with the Sharks during the offseason, has only four games of NHL experience after playing the last five years with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.
  • The Anaheim Ducks announced they have recalled forward Isac Lundestrom from the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. The team’s first-round pick from 2018 played 15 games last season, picking up two assists as the team burned the first year of his entry-level contract already. He dealt with injuries however, and only appeared in 12 games with the Gulls last season.

Injury Notes: Larsson, Prout, Raanta

The Edmonton Oilers have internal options to replace top defender Adam Larsson, who unfortunately suffered a major injury – a fractured fibula – in the very first game of the year. The team has recalled promising prospect Evan Bouchard and could also turn to another prospect in Caleb Jones or veteran Brandon Manning, who both remain with AHL Bakersfield. However, none of those three will be a seamless fit as Larsson’s stand-in and Edmonton will feel his absence even if the rest of their defense corps steps up. Facing a six-to-eight week prognosis, the Oilers may need to look elsewhere if they want to avoid a rocky start through the first two months of the season. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that the team is not necessarily looking for a trade already, but is not opposed to going outside the organization to try to replace Larsson. McKenzie opines that a similar defender, one who can log major minutes and play a shutdown role, is not exactly available though. The one name McKenzie mentions as an affordable acquisition is recently-waived veteran Thomas Hickey of the New York Islanders, but McKenzie doubts that Hickey could adequately fill the role left by Larsson and feels his three-year contract is not worth the gamble. It seems the team is most likely going to work with their current group for the time being, with Kris Russell the most likely candidate to move up to the first pair, and will wait to see if an addition is truly needed. Of course, if the Oilers decide to truly try to replace a player of Larsson’s ability via trade, Jesse Puljujarvi remains the organization’s biggest trade chip.

  • Ahead of the San Jose Sharks’ season opener, it seemed that the final blue line spot was a decision between rookie Mario Ferraro and veteran Dalton Prout. However, both defenders ended up playing as Erik Karlsson missed the game for the birth of his child. The decision won’t be very difficult moving forward though. After missing the team’s morning skate, The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz has confirmed that Prout is out indefinitely with an upper-body injury suffered in the opener. There is no timeline for his return, meaning Ferraro could have plenty of time to assert himself as a regular member on the San Jose blue line. Additionally, the team has recalled defenseman Jacob Middleton to add some more depth on the back end.
  • It looked like Antti Raanta would be healthy to begin the season for the Arizona Coyotes, but the team opted not to rush him back, likely in light of how Darcy Kuemper played in his stead last season. Raanta began the season on a conditioning stint with AHL Tuscon, but it was unclear if he would actually see action or simply treat the experience like an extended training camp. Wonder no more, as beat writer Alexander Kinkopf reports that Raanta will actually get the call for the Roadrunners in their season opener tonight. Kinkopf relays word from Arizona head coach Rick Tocchet, who says that Raanta wanted to “sharpen his game” with live action before returning to regular NHL duty and he will get that opportunity tonight. It remains unclear how long the Coyotes expect to be without Raanta as he’s on a conditioning stint, but with the recently-extended Kuemper and recently-claimed Eric Comrie in the mix, with a serviceable third-string in Adin Hill around as well, the team may be looking to make a trade from their goalie depth upon Raanta’s return.

It has been nearly eleven months since Coyotes goaltender Antti Raanta last made an appearance in an NHL game and his delay will last a little longer.  The team announced that he has been assigned to AHL Tucson on a conditioning stint and that netminder Adin Hill has been recalled to take his place.  Raanta played in just two periods during the preseason before sustaining a lower-body injury so given how long he has been off, the move is certainly understandable.  As a veteran, Raanta would have had to consent to the loan to the Roadrunners.

  • The Golden Knights announced that they have recalled defencemen Nic Hague and center Nicolas Roy from Chicago of the AHL. Vegas didn’t have enough cap space to make these roster moves so they’ve transferred winger Alex Tuch to long-term injury reserve.  He was injured late in the preseason and is listed as out on a week-to-week basis.  He’ll need to sit at least ten games or 24 days before being eligible to be activated.
  • Canucks GM Jim Benning told TSN 1040’s Jeff Paterson (Twitter link) that winger Antoine Roussel has been skating on his own for a while as he works his way back from knee surgery. However, he’s still expected to be out until late November.  Between now and then, he’s a candidate to be placed on LTIR if Vancouver needs to recall anyone due to injury as they have less than $170K in cap room to start the season, per CapFriendly.
  • Oilers winger Tomas Jurco is expected to miss tonight’s game against Vancouver after undergoing an undisclosed medical procedure, notes Postmedia’s Jim Matheson. It’s not expected to keep him out for long, however, as he will not be placed on injured reserve.  Jurco cracked Edmonton’s lineup in training camp after spending all of last season in the AHL on a minor league contract.

Poll: Who Will Win The Pacific Division In 2019-20?

We’ve finally reached the end of the offseason and things kick off tonight in the NHL. The regular season begins in Toronto with a matchup between the Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, while the St. Louis Blues will hang their banner against the 2018 champion Washington Capitals. The excitement for the upcoming season is palpable, with even the most minor transactions generating plenty of interest among hockey fans.

With that in mind we’ve been asking you, the PHR reader, to give us your thoughts on the upcoming season. We started with the Atlantic Division, which seemed an easy choice for a good chunk of our community. The Tampa Bay Lightning ran away with the poll, earning a whopping 46% of all votes. Next was the Metropolitan Division, which wasn’t quite as lopsided. The Washington Capitals were picked by 31% of the voters to take home their fifth consecutive division title, but the Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders all got at least 10%.

The closest so far though goes to the Central Division, which is almost a dead heat between the Blues and Colorado Avalanche. Five teams received at least 10% of the vote, with only the Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild falling below that threshold. The Central looks like it will be a meat grinder right to the end, but the reigning Stanley Cup champions are at least slightly ahead right now.

Lastly we’ll look at the Pacific Division, which was filled with disappointment in 2018-19. Just three Western Conference playoff spots came out of the group, with the other five teams all recording 86 or fewer points in the regular season. This time around things might be different, but will the upstart Arizona Coyotes, Connor McDavid-led Edmonton Oilers or rebuilt Vancouver Canucks really be able to challenge for the top spot? Arizona Coyotes Extend Darcy Kuemper

Just a day after claiming goaltender Eric Comrie off waivers, the Arizona Coyotes have locked up one of their other padded protectors. Darcy Kuemper has signed a two-year extension that will keep him from unrestricted free agency next summer and lock him up through the 2021-22 season. The deal carries an average annual value of $4.5MM. GM John Chayka released a short statement:

We are extremely pleased to sign Darcy to a two-year extension. Darcy had an incredible season last year and established himself as one of the NHL’s best goaltenders. With Darcy and Antti [Raanta], we are confident that we have one of the best goaltending tandems in the League.

It’s hard to argue with Chayka about Kuemper becoming one of the best goaltenders in the league, even if his stardom hasn’t risen quite as high in hockey circles. The 29-year old posted a .925 save percentage through 55 games last season for the Coyotes after Raanta went down to injury, including an incredible .933 in 2019. Finishing fifth in Vezina Trophy voting, Kuemper actually recorded the same save percentage and a better goals against average than the eventual winner Andrei Vasilevskiy.

A $4.5MM cap hit puts Kuemper 17th among goaltenders in the NHL for next season, tied with Mikko Koskinen of the Edmonton Oilers and just ahead of Jordan Binnington’s new deal with the St. Louis Blues. It also takes him just ahead of Raanta, who is under contract through the 2020-21 season at a $4.25MM hit. That duo has shown that they are more than capable of providing excellent goaltending for the Coyotes, but will need to stay healthy in order to get Arizona back to the playoffs.

For a team that has for so long been considered a cheap organization, the Coyotes already now have more than $80MM committed to 2020-21. While some of that is Marian Hossa’s dead contract that will be covered by insurance and can be used as long-term injury relief if necessary, the team has also made substantial investments in their core pieces over the last few years. Kuemper will be considered part of that core now for the next few seasons.

Minor Transactions: 10/02/19

Now that the compliance deadline has passed, teams all around the league will likely tweak their rosters before tonight’s action gets underway. As always, we’ll be here keeping track of all those moves throughout the day.

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled John Marino from the minor leagues, placing Bryan Rust on long-term injured reserve. Rust will have to miss at least ten games and is expected to be out “longer-term” according to his head coach yesterday. Marino, 22, was convinced to leave Harvard and sign a two-year deal after the Penguins acquired his rights from the Edmonton Oilers in July.
  • The Boston Bruins have recalled Urho Vaakanainen from the minor leagues, while sending Connor Clifton and Karson Kuhlman down to the AHL. These moves are simply cap maneuvering to maximize the space the Bruins can work with this season.
  • As expected, Christian Fischer and Kyle Capobianco have been recalled by the Arizona Coyotes to fill out their NHL roster. Fischer had been sent down on a paper transaction to become cap compliant, but is back up with the team and looking to make an impact at some point this season.

Eric Comrie, Carl Dahlstrom Claimed Off Waivers

A huge number of talented players were on waivers yesterday, but it appears that just two have been claimed. According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Arizona Coyotes have claimed goaltender Eric Comrie from the Winnipeg Jets, while Winnipeg themselves have picked up defenseman Carl Dahlstrom from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Comrie, 24, wasn’t the most accomplished goaltender on waivers yesterday, but does perhaps offer the most upside. Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 draft, the former WHL star has steadily improved his game in the minor leagues and posted a .917 save percentage in 47 games with the Manitoba Moose last season. The World Junior gold medalist can help the Coyotes deal with their early goaltending injuries, but it will be interesting to see if he lasts in the NHL long-term on a team that already has Antti Raanta and Darcy Kuemper locked into the top two spots. Because of that, Winnipeg may get a chance to reclaim him at some point.

Dahlstrom meanwhile may be in a much different situation. The Jets have lost a huge chunk of their defense corps this summer through trade (Jacob Trouba), free agency (Tyler Myers, Ben Chiarot) and potential retirement (Dustin Byfuglien), leaving Josh Morrissey and a relatively new cast of characters. Dahlstrom will offer another young option to try out after he played 38 games for the Blackhawks last season. The second-round pick stands 6’4″ 231-lbs, size that many of the Jets’ current defensemen are lacking.

With just the two claims, it means that players like Daniel Sprong, Casey DeSmith, Joshua Ho-Sang, Thomas Hickey and Sven Baertschi can all be assigned to the minor leagues. A setback for all of them as they try to continue their NHL careers.
