6:42 PM: Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic reports that Panarin is seeking a contract extension before he’ll sign off on any trade. With the Rangers committed to holding him out through the Olympic break if needed, Panarin now has ample time to try to work out a deal with his next team.
5:28 PM: According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, the New York Rangers are healthy-scratching Artemi Panarin for roster-related reasons. Not only will Panarin sit tonight against the New York Islanders, but Walker shared that he won’t be back in the lineup before the upcoming Olympic break.
That means, at least in the short-term future, that Panarin will miss the next four games for the Rangers. In all likelihood, he has played his last game for the Rangers.
Still, there’s no indication that a Panarin trade is particularly close. Because of the no-movement clause included in his contract, Panarin would have to greenlight any trade out of New York. It is believed that the Rangers have asked Panarin to provide a list of teams he would be willing to join, and today’s news suggests that Panarin has at least offered them a few options.
It’ll be interesting to see how long New York is willing to keep Panarin on the sidelines. Because there’s no indication a trade is close, and not every team linked to Panarin has sufficient cap space to acquire Panarin (though they would by the time the trade deadline rolls around), there’s a possibility that a deal won’t materialize until closer to the deadline. It would be unlikely, but that worst-case scenario could have Panarin without game action for over a month.
Regardless, if he has already played his last game with New York, he has finished as one of the organization’s best offensive players ever. Since joining the Rangers ahead of the 2019-20 campaign, Panarin has scored 205 goals and 607 points in 482 games with a +68 rating. He has consistently maintained a CorsiFor% above 50.0% at even strength and was a top-five scorer in the league as recently as the 2023-24 season.
Much of the concern regarding Panarin’s tenure with the Rangers has stemmed from a perception that he “disappears” during the playoffs. This claim is wholly unfounded.
Although Panarin hasn’t maintained his regular-season scoring pace in the postseason, he has recorded 19 goals and 53 points in 62 playoff games since joining the Columbus Blue Jackets before the 2017-18 season. Exclusively with the Rangers, he’s registered 12 goals and 35 points in 46 games while averaging more than 20 minutes per night, helping the team reach two Eastern Conference Finals.
It’s an evolving situation, but Panarin should be with a new team relatively soon.

Ohh boy he’s going to be moved soon!!! Now this will be an exciting next couple days! Come on Holland, bring em to LA!
It will be interesting who Artemi Panarin ends up with as will it be one of the teams reportedly interested (ex. Kings, Capitals, etc) or will it be a team no one really saw coming and gets him. It appears we’re going to find out soon. It’s intriguing how this will play out.
So if he gets traded, it will be to another NHL team. Thanks for the insight.
You’re such an a$$hole. I was just typing my thoughts as that’s the point of a comment board. What insight do you share?…Oh wait…you got nothing. You’re just a poser.
Please not the Caps, please not the Caps, please not the Caps…
-a Caps fan who loves Panarin, but loves not sucking for the rest of the 2020s more
Didn’t the Caps season end last night?
I don’t think they see the season as over yet. They still could get hot and sneak in. But, even so, the part about Panarin wanting an extension might be in their favor since the Caps desperately need another goal scorer for future seasons. A lot of their prospects that were great in Hershey just haven’t panned out at the NHL level.
The only forward who was “great in Hershey and hasn’t panned out” has been Lapierre. Ilya Protas should step into the lineup next year and has legit 1/2C potential. Cristall is another guy with top 6 upside, but he’ll likely need close to another season in the AHL.
Caps have been connected to many top line forwards in the last few years but have proven quite conservative in their asset management. I think they’ll kick the tires on Panarin but won’t want to pony up the picks/prospects NYR is looking for. I could see a fit if he makes it to UFA, though.
Panarin doesn’t want to play with Putin’ boy Oviechkin
Except when he asks Ovi to play in his charity game every year, which Ovi gladly does, because they’re buddies?
LA or NJ.
As much I don’t want to see NJD make this move, it does make a lot of sense fit wise.
Going to the knights, with Saad +picks going back would be funny as hell.
ANAHEIM back with Quinnville my bet but long shot Detroit to play again with Patty.
I’m curious what the caps or LA has to offer that NY would want. Or NJ for that matter. Or MIN. I’m kinda expecting something more surprising than those though obviously I get why those teams would be shopping. It’s interesting to guess at what kinds of offers Drury will get based on Panarin’s situation.
Picks and prospects is the stated aim. Every team has those.
I agree the packages will be interesting. The Rangers have shown their hand. Panarin is moving and holds all the leverage in terms of where he goes.
I think Rangers fans will be upset how underwhelming the package is. But the way the Rangers are looking at it is they need to get back something for him.
Its not like there’s a world where the Rangers hold onto him at this point. Rangers probably eat some salary to gain some leverage in discussions and open the market to more teams who have less cap space.
Every team except Toronto
35 pts in 46 playoff games isn’t exactly impressive for a player of his caliber. He’s likely not a difference maker for most teams when the going gets rough in the playoffs. Mot teams chasing after him will be lucky if they fail.
How about Panarin to Minnesota for Wallstedt, And, Then the Rangers trade Shesterkin for a Kings ransom.
As a rangers fan, this would be absolutely insane but since our contention window definitely won’t be during shestys prime…. It’s a yes from me!
AP at 1/2 price to NJ for Mercer, 2 top 5 protected 1sts
AP at 1/2 price to the Canes for Kotkaniemi, Nikishin, a 1st
AP at 1/2 price and Schneider to Dallas for Robo
Canes wouldn’t trade Nikishin for Panarin straight up
^ this
But they rid themselves Kockimami in this trade! 👍
They can buy Kotkamiemi out with very little penalty this summer even if they cant find a way to dump his salary. Theyre not giving up Nikishin for a rental winger. If he is moved it will be for a top 6 C they can control for awhile.
Panarin would not be a rental, an extension is required by his camp. Read the article, not just the headline!
Nikishin is very, very highly valued by Carolina. He was considered by many to be the #2 prospect not in the NHL just before coming over. He just turned 24, Panarin just turned 34.
I don’t see any way Carolina trades him for Panarin, extension or otherwise.
He would be a rental, because there is no way the Canes would extend him at the price he wants.
Kings
Give up a 1 this year a. Two this year and a 4th in the future
Greentree and one one the three elite gk prospects
Drury continues to stock NYR West (Ducks) by sending Breadman to Anaheim for 1st this year (Probably 15-20), 2nd next year and Roger McQueen. Bread signs 3 year 36 million deal.
Bold but not impossible. Panarin loves money
Breadman sants to stay in the East. His camp already has contacted FLA And others, but how do they offer an extension??????????
