Blackhawks Recall Wyatt Kaiser
The Blackhawks recalled defenseman Wyatt Kaiser on an emergency loan Monday, per CapFriendly. It’s the 21-year-old’s first recall since Chicago assigned him to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs in late December.
Since his recall comes under emergency conditions, the Blackhawks maintain their two remaining post-trade deadline standard recalls. Kaiser must replace one of Chicago’s six currently healthy defenders, one of whom is likely questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Kings, to remain eligible for an emergency loan. Otherwise, the Blackhawks must convert his recall into a standard one or return him to the IceHogs.
The 2020 third-round pick played in a career-high 23 games in the first few months of the season, recording four assists and a +1 rating. Averaging 16:40 per game, the former University of Minnesota-Duluth standout wasn’t quite the relative shutdown master his positive rating on a rebuilder suggests. Above-average goaltending boosted his actual results, while his even-strength possession numbers (42.7 CF%, 40.3 xGF%) reflected that of a developing talent.
Nonetheless, Kaiser is one of the Blackhawks’ more intriguing defense prospects and may get another shot to log some games after making the Blackhawks’ roster out of camp. Ranked as the 11th-best overall prospect in Chicago’s system and the third-best defenseman by The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler, he has three goals and 15 points in 31 games for Rockford in his first taste of AHL action this year. Over three seasons at Minnesota-Duluth, he recorded 45 assists, 52 points, and a +5 rating in 97 contests.
Kaiser is in the second season of his three-year entry-level contract, which took effect immediately after signing in March of last year. He carries a cap hit of $917K and will be an RFA in 2025.
Central Notes: Scandella, Wild Injuries, Savoie, Kaiser
The Blues are one of the teams that are still in the mix for a Wild Card spot but even if they fall out of the race, Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic wonders (subscription link) if it could be a quiet deadline as a seller. Their most prominent rentals up front are the struggling Kasperi Kapanen and Jakub Vrana, who is currently playing in the minors; neither would likely have much of a market. However, Rutherford suggests that blueliner Marco Scandella could be the likeliest player to garner attention around the league if he isn’t signed to an extension first. The 33-year-old has had a very limited role this season but can still kill penalties and is the type of depth player that playoff teams will often look to add for injury insurance purposes. That said, at $3.275MM, St. Louis would certainly have to pay half of that to facilitate any sort of move while an extension, if one was to be reached, should check in closer to the $1MM mark.
Elsewhere in the Central Division:
- Wild winger Vinni Lettieri is listed as questionable for tonight’s game against Anaheim, relays John Shipley of the Pioneer Press. The 28-year-old has been out since late December with a lower-body injury after seeing some consistent minutes as he had played in 19 games on recall. Meanwhile, Shipley adds that winger Adam Raska skated before practice Friday. He was injured last weekend; head coach John Hynes suggested the injury isn’t a significant one and is more soreness-based. The 22-year-old was acquired in November from San Jose and has played in five games since being recalled earlier this month.
- The Blackhawks activated prospect Samuel Savoie off season-opening IR and assigned him to QMJHL Rouyn-Noranda, CapFriendly reports (Twitter link). The 19-year-old recorded just shy of a point per game with the Huskies last season, notching 59 in 60 appearances, helping him earn his entry-level contract in July. However, he was injured in a preseason game and underwent femur surgery, keeping him unavailable to play until now. This should be Savoie’s final junior season as he’ll be AHL-eligible in the fall.
- Still with the Blackhawks, blueliner Wyatt Kaiser has been placed in concussion protocol, per an announcement from AHL Rockford (Twitter link). The 21-year-old has split the season between Chicago and the IceHogs but any potential recall is out of the question for the time being now. Kaiser has played in 23 games with the Blackhawks, picking up four assists while logging nearly 17 minutes a night. With Rockford, his numbers have been similar, notching a goal and two helpers in 15 contests.
Blackhawks Activate Jarred Tinordi
The Blackhawks activated defenseman Jarred Tinordi from injured reserve ahead of tonight’s game against the Canadiens, as reflected in CapFriendly’s transactions log. In two corresponding moves, defensemen Wyatt Kaiser and Filip Roos were returned to AHL Rockford from their emergency loans.
Tinordi, 31, is in the lineup tonight for the first time in over two weeks. He last suited up on December 5 against the Predators but left late in the game and immediately entered concussion protocol. He was retroactively placed on injured reserve within the week, though head coach Luke Richardson said yesterday that Tinordi was nearing a return (via Scott Powers of The Athletic).
It has been a trying season for Tinordi, as he already missed most of November with an oblique injury. The 2010 first-round pick has never truly solidified himself as an everyday NHL player, but he’s a de facto top-six defenseman for a Blackhawks team missing their top pair of Seth Jones and Alex Vlasic due to injuries, not to mention their existing paper-thin depth. Last season, his first in Chicago, Tinordi played a career-high 44 games and logged no minor-league time for just the second instance of his pro career. Since making his NHL debut with the Canadiens in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, Tinordi has appeared in 165 games for the Predators, Coyotes, Bruins, and Rangers in addition to Montreal and Chicago, scoring four goals, eight assists, 22 points, and posting a -40 rating while averaging 15:19 per game.
The bruising 6-foot-6, 230-pound defender has a snarl to his game but carries little else in the form of offensive or defensive upside. His possession numbers routinely rank near the bottom of the league, posting a cumulative career Corsi share of 44.6% at even strength – a remarkably low number given his 100-plus game run in the league. Tonight, he occupies a second-pairing role alongside Louis Crevier in his return to the lineup.
Kaiser and Roos return to Rockford after being recalled under emergency conditions in direct response to Jones’ and Tinordi’s injuries earlier this month, respectively.
Blackhawks Place Seth Jones On IR, Recall Wyatt Kaiser
The Blackhawks have made a pair of moves on their back end leading up to tomorrow’s matchup against Vancouver. The team announced that defenseman Seth Jones has been placed on injured reserve. Taking his place on the roster is blueliner Wyatt Kaiser who has been recalled from AHL Rockford.
Jones is dealing with an upper-body injury and his placement is dated retroactive to December 10th. That means he’ll be eligible to be activated after missing Sunday’s game. Earlier today, head coach Luke Richardson told reporters including Scott Powers of The Athletic (Twitter link) that there is no timetable for how long his top blueliner will be out.
The 29-year-old is still looking for his first goal of the season but has 11 assists in 27 games along with 64 blocked shots. He’s also logging 25:25 per game, ranking fifth in the NHL in ATOI among all players so Richardson will have to get creative to try to fill those minutes.
As for Kaiser, the 21-year-old is in his first full professional year and has spent most of the year with Chicago, suiting up in 21 games where he has four assists along with 27 blocks while averaging 16:34 per night. Earlier this month, the Blackhawks opted to send him to Rockford to get him some more playing time; he got into five games with the IceHogs and was held off the scoresheet.
Blackhawks Announce Several Roster Moves
The Blackhawks are in action today against Winnipeg and have made several roster moves in advance of that game. The team announced that Jarred Tinordi has been activated off injured reserve while blueliner Louis Crevier has been recalled from AHL Rockford. In corresponding moves, defensemen Wyatt Kaiser and Isaak Phillips have been sent to the IceHogs.
Tinordi is returning after missing the last three weeks with an oblique injury. The 31-year-old has played in nine games so far this season, picking up an assist along with 23 hits and 19 blocks while averaging a little under 15 minutes a night. Last season, Tinordi established himself as a regular in the second half, suiting up in a career-best 44 games, helping to earn himself a one-year, $1.25MM contract. He’ll be set to test unrestricted free agency this summer.
Generally, a 6’6 player being added to the roster would be considered a pretty big addition size-wise but Tinordi is the smaller of the two additions to Chicago’s active roster as Crevier stands 6’8. The 22-year-old is in his second professional season and has five assists in 16 games with Rockford, matching his rookie season output. This is his first-ever NHL recall.
As for Kaiser, he made Chicago’s roster out of training camp and has played in all 21 games so far this season after seeing nine games with them down the stretch after his college campaign came to an end. The 21-year-old has four assists in those contests while averaging a respectable 16:34 per game. However, he has struggled a bit in his own end in recent games and this demotion will give him a chance to reset while playing a much more prominent role with the IceHogs.
Phillips, meanwhile, is no stranger to being shuffled back and forth as this is his third demotion of the year already. The 22-year-old has played in nine games with Chicago this season, collecting three assists while picking up a goal and two helpers in eight games with Rockford. It stands to reason that he’ll be one of the first recalls when further injuries arise as the season progresses.
