West Notes: Jets, Roy, Grundstrom

Murat Ates of The Athletic expects the Winnipeg Jets to check in on Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen prior to the NHL Trade Deadline. The Jets have had interest in the 30-year-old in the past and Ates thinks they could take another look at him in hopes of boosting their blueline.

Winnipeg doesn’t have a ton of draft capital in this year’s NHL Entry Draft, having moved several picks out the door in previous trades. The Jets likely wouldn’t need to move a first-round pick to acquire Ristolainen and would probably scoff if that was the cost of acquiring him from Philadelphia.

In other Western Conference notes:

  • Vegas Golden Knights forward Nicolas Roy practiced today in a no-contact jersey (as per SinBin.vegas). Roy has been out of action since December 15th with an upper-body injury. The 27-year-old’s injury progressed unusually after he was first given a maintenance day and then missed several practices and eventually a game. A short time later he was put on the injured reserve and has been there since. Roy had a career year last season, posting 13 goals and 28 assists in 70 games but wasn’t able to carry the momentum into this year as he had a slow start with just six goals and seven assists in 31 games.
  • San Jose Sharks forward Carl Grundstrom was a full participant in practice today (as per Max Miller of The Hockey News). The 27-year-old suffered an undisclosed injury on December 28th in a game against the Calgary Flames but is reportedly close to returning. The Umea, Sweden native has been used sparingly in 30 games, averaging just nine minutes of ice time per game. The former second-round pick has a goal and four assists and will likely return to a spot in the team’s bottom six when he is healthy.

Evening Notes: Ristolainen, Broberg, Penguins

TSN’s Darren Dreger is reporting that Philadelphia Flyers defender Rasmus Ristolainen is drawing a lot of interest on the NHL trade market. The 30-year-old defenseman is his fourth year with the Flyers and has two years left on his contract after this season with a cap hit of $5.1MM. Ristolainen has been playing in Philadelphia’s top four and averaging over 20 minutes a game this season, but he is likely best suited as a bottom-pairing defenseman, which isn’t ideal given his cap number.

Ristolainen hasn’t produced much offense this season with just a goal and four assists in 22 games, and his underlying numbers leave a lot to be desired. Philadelphia has controlled just 43.8% of the even-strength expected goals with Ristolainen on the ice according to Natural Stat Trick and controlled possession just 45.1% of the time (as per Hockey Reference).

In other evening notes:

  • Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic reports that St. Louis Blues defenseman Philip Broberg skated with the team today but is not yet ready to return to the lineup tomorrow when they take on the New Jersey Devils. Broberg was initially given a four to six-week timeline to return from his knee injury and likely won’t return to the lineup until the weekend at the earliest. The 23-year-old is in his first season with the Blues and has been very good offensively this season, posting two goals and seven assists in 12 games.
  • Chris Johnston of TSN is reporting that the Pittsburgh Penguins are active in the trade market, looking for younger players who can slide into their lineup this season as well as for the long term. The Penguins have made two trades in recent weeks, one to move out 35-year-old Lars Eller, and another to bring in 23-year-old Philip Tomasino. The Penguins are in a tough spot as they can’t bottom out and go into a full rebuild with Sidney Crosby still playing at a high level, but they also don’t want to mortgage the future for a short-term fix. General manager Kyle Dubas has made several moves for former first-round picks who haven’t panned out with their previous teams, including Tamasino, Cody Glass and Jesse Puljujärvi.

Flyers Notes: Ristolainen, York, Drysdale

After a rough showing last season, Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen has been a much more impactful player in the early going this year, logging more than 20 minutes a night while chipping in with plenty of blocks and hits as usual.  Accordingly, some have wondered if he could become a trade candidate at some point.  Kevin Kurz of The Athletic relays (subscription link) that Philadelphia is fielding calls on the 30-year-old but they aren’t interested in just clearing out the remainder of his contract, one that carries a $5.1MM AAV through the 2026-27 campaign but haven’t formally set an asking price either.  Philadelphia has only used one of its three retention slots and could up the return by paying down part of the contract but it wouldn’t be surprising if a Ristolainen move happens closer to the trade deadline, if one happens at all this season.

More from Philadelphia:

  • Blueliner Cam York had a breakout season last year with 10 goals and 30 points and was off to a solid start this year before being sidelined with an upper-body injury. He’s in the final year of his bridge deal, one that carries a $1.6MM AAV.  However, Daily Faceoff’s Anthony DiMarco suggests the next contract will cost considerably more, noting that Devon Toews’ contract in Colorado could be a comparable for negotiations.  Toews is on a seven-year deal with a $7.25MM AAV though it should be noted that each season is a UFA-eligible one, something that won’t be the case for York who isn’t UFA-eligible until 2028.  Regardless, York is well on his way to a sizable raise next summer.
  • Defenseman Jamie Drysdale took part in today’s morning skate with a non-contact jersey, notes Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia (Twitter link). The 22-year-old is currently on injured reserve with an upper-body injury but the placement was made retroactive to November 9th so he’ll be eligible to return once fully cleared.  Drysdale was off to a quiet start to his first full season with the Flyers as he had just three points in his first 15 games although his 20:35 ATOI is the highest of his career.

East Notes: Frederic, Ristolainen, Benning

In an unsurprising but notable report, ESPN’s Kevin Weekes shares that Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic should have plenty of interest in his services once he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, 2025. Frederic has developed into a prototypical Bruins forward, combining physicality and toughness with a knack for goal-scoring.

Frederic plays a similar style to Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson although he hasn’t racked up nearly the number of PIMs as the veteran. From 2022-24, Frederic scored 35 goals and 71 points in 161 games for the Bruins while also collecting 309 hits. He has more experience down the middle which should give him some extra value but his career 44.4% success rate in the dot leaves a lot to be desired.

Outside of his solid offensive output as a middle-six center, Frederic can also be trusted in the defensive zone. He averaged 57.4% of his zone starts in the defensive zone during the 2023-24 regular season and still managed a 91.3% on-ice save percentage in all situations.

Aside from likely interest in free agency, Frederic could be an interesting trade chip throughout the 2024-25 regular season. Boston has gotten off to a disappointing 6-6-1 start to the regular season and Frederic could be valuable trade bait closer to the deadline should the trend continue.

Other notes from the Eastern Conference:

  • If the last four years were any indication, the Philadelphia Flyers are again expected to be a deadline seller evidenced by their 4-7-1 start to the regular season. One trade piece the organization has is defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen who will have two years and $10.2MM left on his contract after this year. Given the market over the last few seasons, Ristolainen’s size and physicality on the blue line could warrant a first-round draft pick according to Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff. Di Marco may be correct in his thinking regarding size and physicality but a first-round pick for an edge top-four defenseman still appears bullish at face value.
  • Another piece already publicly on the trade block is Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenseman Matt Benning. The organization may have difficulty shedding the two years and $2.5MM left on Benning’s current four-year contract but they likely have a contingency plan. In an article from James Mirtle of The Athletic (Subscription Article), he shares that Toronto is likely to place Benning on waivers should they not find a suitable trade. It stands to reason the Maple Leafs are more willing to lose Benning over Conor Timmins once they ultimately activate Jani Hakanpää from the injured reserve.

Flyers’ Rasmus Ristolainen Undergoes Triceps Surgery

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen has undergone surgery to repair a ruptured triceps tendon. He’s expected to have a three-month recovery period and be fully ready for the start of 2024 training camp (Twitter link). Ristolainen has been out since February 10th with the injury, moving to injured reserve on February 26th.

Ristolainen appeared in just 31 games this season, recording one goal, four points, and eight penalty minutes. This season marked the fewest games and tied for the fewest points, of his NHL career, rivaling his rookie season when he totaled four points in 34 games. It’s an unfortunate step backwards after Ristolainen scored 20 points in 74 games last season, his highest point totals since the 2019-20 season.

Ristolainen’s injury opened a lineup spot that Philadelphia never found a perfect fill-in for. They cycled between a list of defenders as the end of the season approached, awarding Ronald Attard, Louis Belpedio, Adam Ginning, and Emil Andrae NHL ice time in their search. It was ultimately Attard and Belpedio that received the most action, each appearing in 12 games. Belpedio managed four points, split evenly, while Attard recorded two assists.

The Flyers now get an early relief from that lineup decision, missing out on the playoffs after a disappointing 4-9-3 end to their season. Ristolainen’s $5.1MM cap hit will earn him an NHL role next season, though Attard and Belpedio could add extended pressure to his bottom-of-the-lineup role.

Metro Notes: Drysdale, Ristolainen, Seeler, Nylander, Nieto

Coming from today’s media availability with the General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, Daniel Briere, there were several updates on injured members of the organization’s defensive core. Charlie O’Connor of PHLY Sports reports that defenseman Jamie Drysdale is expected back before the end of the regular season, but the same expectation is not held for Rasmus Ristolainen.

Furthermore, in the most positive development, O’Connor mentions that defenseman Nick Seeler is very close to a return, and may even be available for the team this weekend. With only a one-point lead on the Washington Capitals for third place in the Metropolitan Division, the Flyers could use all the help they can get to capture their first postseason appearance since the 2019-20 season.

Even with Ristolainen unlikely to return, and assuming Philadelphia qualifies for the 2023-24 Stanley Cup playoffs, they should still be able to muster solid depth with their defensive core. Cam York, Yegor Zamula, and Seeler have all taken notable steps forward this season, and the team did bring in Erik Johnson from the Buffalo Sabres at the deadline.

  •  Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports is reporting that Columbus Blue Jackets forward Alexander Nylander will miss his second straight game with an undisclosed injury. Although it does not sound like the injury is serious, it will blunt the momentum that Nylander has accrued in his first handful of games with the Blue Jackets. Since coming to Columbus, Nylander has played in a total of 15 games, scoring eight goals and 11 points in total.
  • In a separate update from Rorabaugh, it does not appear that Pittsburgh Penguins’ forward Matt Nieto will be back with the team this season, as he’s experienced several hurdles in his recovery process. Initially, it was believed that Nieto would be out between six and eight weeks recovering from knee surgery, but has surpassed that measure.

Flyers Notes: Trade Deadline, Goaltending, Konecny, Drysdale, Ristolainen

While the recent Chris Tanev trade carried a lighter return than some expected, don’t expect the Flyers to adjust their asking price for their players.  Speaking with reporters on Friday including Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer, GM Daniel Briere indicated that the Calgary-Dallas swap won’t affect how they approach the next few days:

It doesn’t change our asking price. Yeah, it was maybe a little lighter than expected, but it doesn’t change our approach. If teams are not willing to meet our price, and what we feel is fair, you know, we’re a playoff team. We get to keep them and we get to make a run. That’s the way I see it.

Briere also confirmed that the team is still in discussions with the agents for their pending UFAs to assess what it would cost to keep them.  While not naming names, defensemen Sean Walker and Nick Seeler are almost certainly the ones he’s referring to as several teams are showing interest in both blueliners.  That said, if a trade doesn’t happen, Briere cautioned that it doesn’t necessarily mean that an extension will happen either.

  • Goaltending is a bit of a question mark right now behind Samuel Ersson. With Carter Hart out of the picture and Calvin Petersen’s struggles, Felix Sandstrom is now the backup, a role he hasn’t had much success in previously.  Briere acknowledged that they’re looking at all options.  Speculatively, with the team having a little over $6.2MM of cap room on deadline day per CapFriendly, the Flyers could keep an eye on the rental market for netminders to see if there’s a low-cost upgrade available.
  • On the injury front, Briere is hopeful that winger Travis Konecny will be able to return soon from the upper-body injury that has caused him to miss four straight games. Monday versus St. Louis hasn’t been ruled out yet but Thursday against Florida might be more realistic.  Konecny has a 10-point lead on Joel Farabee for the team lead in scoring with 27 goals and 27 assists in 57 games.
  • Meanwhile, on the back end, Jamie Drysdale is getting some strength back in his shoulder after his recent injury but the team does not yet have a timeline for his return although they’re hopeful he’ll be back at some point this season. Veteran Rasmus Ristolainen, who has missed the last three weeks with an upper-body injury of his own, is in the same situation timeline-wise.

Metro Notes: Flyers, Rust, Chatfield

Earlier today, the Philadelphia Flyers announced a plethora of injuries, revealing that Rasmus Ristolainen and Jamie Drysdale would both be out week-to-week with upper-body injuries and that Travis Konecny would be out day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Still holding strong in their attempt to make the playoffs, these injuries could impact the Flyers’ competitiveness moving forward over their next several games.

Not only will Philadelphia be playing without some of their regular players for the next couple of games, but it will take a potential trade chip off the board in Ristolainen. Although he does carry a relatively expensive cap hit of $5.1MM until after the 2026-27 NHL season, Ristolainen has appeared in some trade chatter over the last several weeks. Dealing with some injury concerns earlier in the season, Ristolainen has responded with one goal and four points over 31 games with the Flyers, averaging 16:41 of ice time per game.

The major concern, however, will be with Drysdale, who is building an extensive injury history in only his fourth season in the NHL. Last season, Drysdale infamously lost the entirety of the year after eight games for a shoulder injury that would require surgery and did miss two months of action earlier this season when he was still a member of the Anaheim Ducks with a lower-body injury.

Other Metro notes:

  • Matt Vensel of Post-Gazette Sports is reporting that Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust will be out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. Falling further and further out of contention, the loss of Rust for the next few weeks will certainly not help Pittsburgh rise in the standings. Potentially becoming one of the deadline’s more important sellers, losing both Rust and Jake Guentzel over the last few days may ultimately force the Penguins’ hand in their eventual deadline approach.
  • Missing the team’s last four games with an upper-body injury, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jalen Chatfield is set to return tonight according to the Hurricanes’ Editorial Content Producer, Walt Ruff. Chatfield has been solid for Carolina this season, scoring five goals and 14 points in 49 games, while holding a strong CorsiFor% of 58.4%.

Flyers Place Rasmus Ristolainen On IR, Recall Bobby Brink

The Philadelphia Flyers have placed defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The team recently shared that Ristolainen will miss at least two or three weeks, and will undergo a procedure to determine the full extent of his injury. There is no clarity on when he may return, though The Fourth Period’s Anthony Di Marco shared that Ristolainen will miss significant time.

This news comes at a terrible time for the Flyers, who recently learned that Jamie Drysdale will miss extended time after taking a heavy hit on Sunday. He’s now facing an injury to the same shoulder that he injured last season when a torn labrum limited him to just eight games all season. The Flyers are once again in injury turmoil, carrying just enough defensemen to ice a full lineup.

Philadelphia has also recalled forward Bobby Brink. Brink has played out his rookie NHL season this year, recording 18 points, six penalty minutes, and a +7 in 38 games with Philadelphia. He has dominated the AHL since being assigned in late January, scoring six goals and 11 points in 11 games. He’s the only player on the Lehigh Valley Phantoms scoring at a point-per-game pace this season.

The AHL isn’t unfamiliar to Brink, who scored 28 points in 41 games with the Phantoms last season. It was his first full year as a professional hockey player, though he did play in 10 NHL games after the end of the University of Denver’s 2021-22 season. Still, last year marked an important year of growth for the young forward. He’ll now eye yet another opportunity in the NHL, looking to improve on his modest first half of the season.

Rasmus Ristolainen To Undergo Upper-Body Procedure, Out Multiple Weeks

Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen will be out a minimum of two to three weeks before undergoing a procedure to address a minor upper-body injury, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports Wednesday. The Fourth Period’s Anthony Di Marco was the first to report that Ristolainen’s injury would keep him out for a significant amount of time.

Ristolainen, 29, was drumming up interest from multiple teams ahead of the March 8 trade deadline, including the Maple Leafs. Today’s news puts his availability for a deal in doubt, though, and he’s now likely to remain a Flyer until the offseason. After undergoing the procedure later this month, it’s unclear how long Ristolainen will be out, Kurz says. The Flyers also added Wednesday that Ristolainen has no timetable for a return and is still being checked.

Despite a lack of point production (one goal, three assists in 31 games), the 2013 eighth-overall pick is perhaps having the strongest defensive showing of his 11-year NHL career. His expected +4.9 rating is a career-high, and he’s managed to control a majority of expected goals when paired with youngster Yegor Zamula at even strength, per MoneyPuck.

Nonetheless, his $5.1MM cap hit makes him a difficult asset to move, given he’s best suited for a two-way, third-pairing role at this stage in his career. His bump in defensive adeptness since arriving in Philadelphia via a 2021 trade from the Sabres has also come with a significant decrease in minutes, now averaging just 16:41 per game this year compared to his 22:50 career average. Add in that he’s signed through 2027, and it becomes a tough task for a team to swallow his contract, no matter how much improvement he’s shown in his game.

Ristolainen had to wait until late November to make his season debut after an undisclosed injury cost him the first 20 games of the season. He’s played in three of Philadelphia’s last six games due to a healthy scratch, illness, and the current upper-body injury, which held him out of Monday’s game against the Coyotes.

With the Flyers’ defense otherwise at full health, head coach John Tortorella has opted to dress seven defensemen, giving oft-scratched veteran Marc Staal a chance to play while winger Tyson Foerster is sidelined with a short-term lower-body injury. That ailment is expected to keep Foerster out “a few extra days,” GM Daniel Brière said today, meaning he’ll miss Thursday’s game against the Maple Leafs but not much longer.
