East Notes: Oshie, Beleskey, Sorokin, Soderstrom

Capitals GM Brian MacLellan has spoken with representatives for right winger T.J. Oshie regarding a contract beyond this season, notes Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post.  However, given the number of key potential unrestricted free agents the team has (not to mention the looming expansion draft), it’s unlikely that a deal will get done between now and the end of the season.

Oshie is in his second season in Washington and there’s a strong case to be made that he’s having the best season of his career.  Through 58 games this season, he has a career high 29 goals along with 20 assists.  Accordingly, he could wind up being the top free agent to hit the open market, something our Zach Leach took a closer look at over the weekend.

Other unrestricted free agents of note that the Caps have in July include defensemen Karl Alzner and Kevin Shattenkirk as well as wingers Justin Williams and Daniel Winnik.  The team already has a little more than $50MM committed to next season per CapFriendly and also have several key restricted free agents to re-sign, including center Evgeny Kuznetsov, winger Andre Burakovsky, and defenseman Dmitry Orlov.

Elsewhere around the East:

  • In his latest mailbag, CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty wonders if the Bruins may revisit the idea of dealing winger Matt Beleskey in the summer. The 28 year old has struggled considerably in his second season with Boston, collecting just eight points (3-5-8) through 41 games this season, hardly the type of production they were expecting when they signed him to a five year, $19MM contract in the summer of 2015.  The Bruins are likely heading for a long-term extension with David Pastrnak this coming offseason and could certainly benefit from clearing out Beleskey’s contract.  He is only a year removed from a career best 37 point season so while his market may be low, there could still be some interest around the league.
  • Islanders goalie prospect Ilya Sorokin is expected to remain in the KHL next season, reports Newsday’s Arthur Staple (Twitter link). Their third round pick (78th overall) in 2014, Sorokin has been one of the top goalies in the KHL the last two seasons and posted a stellar 1.69 GAA and a .929 SV% in 39 regular season games this season.  As for fellow goalie prospect Linus Soderstrom, a 2014 fourth rounder (95th overall), Staple adds that New York may sign him but allow him to remain in Sweden for one more year.  Soderstrom posted a sparking 1.34 GAA and a .943 SV% in 22 games in the SHL this season.  As internationally-drafted prospects, the Islanders have four years from their draft class to sign each player so there is no imminent deadline to get something done.

Bruins And Avalanche Talking Trade

After Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic was seen speaking with Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney during the second period of the Bruins’ 4-0 shutout of the Montreal Canadiens last night, the internet has exploded with speculation of a potential deal in the works. The expectations are not unprecedented; it was reported earlier this season that the Bruins were interested in the captain of the last-place Avs, available winger Gabriel Landeskog. However, they balked at the asking price of a package including impressive rookie defenseman Brandon Carlo and those talks apparently had fallen apart.

They seem to be back on now though. The Boston Globe’s Fluto Shinzawa writes this morning that both executives are under immense pressure and have been in constant communication lately. Sakic’s squad is one of the worst in recent memory, while Sweeney’s team has missed the playoffs two years in a row, despite a deep and talented roster, and just fired the best coach in team history in an effort to get back to the postseason. While many Bruins fans would like to see the team refrain from making any desperate moves, as trading young players has not worked out for them over the last decade (see: Joe Thornton, Kris Versteeg, Blake Wheeler, Tyler Seguin, Johnny Boychuk, Dougie Hamilton, ect.), Boston undoubtedly needs some scoring help, both this year and in the future, as Sweeney said himself recently.

With lots of talent in the system, both up front and on the blue line, Boston has the pieces to make a major trade if they so choose. What they lack, is immediate help at left wing. Brad Marchand and Frank Vatrano have top left side spots locked up long-term, but Matt Beleskey has had a down year after career-highs in 2016-17 and Tim Schaller is not a top-nine option.  Rookie Peter Cehlarik, recently recalled from the AHL’s Providence Bruins where he has been the best player all year long, played great in front of Sakic last night, but is a pass-first player on a team in search of a sniper. Former college star Danton Heinen failed to make a difference in his Boston tryouts earlier this year and 2015 first-rounder Jake DeBrusk has failed to earn his first career call-up yet. The Bruins most promising left wing option in the system may be Marchand clone Jesse Gabrielle or Notre Dame star Anders Bjork.

Thus, the desire to acquire Landeskog, if that is Sweeney’s intention, makes sense. However, the cost could be too high. Shinzawa believes that the likes of Cehlarik, center Ryan Spooner, or defenseman Colin Miller may not be enough for the Avalanche and that they are stuck on the Colorado-native Carlo. The Bruins first instinct to reject even the thought of moving the young blue liner is correct though. At just 20 years old, the 6’5″ Carlo has played major minutes, both regular strength and special teams, all season long and has learned under one of the best, Zdeno Chara. He has size, strength, skating ability, and now experience at a very young age. Would the Bruins really trade a player with the makings of a top-pair defenseman for the next decade? Shinzawa does note that they have top prospect Charlie McAvoy, perhaps the only untouchable in the system, waiting in the wings and three NHL-caliber defenseman on the right side in Colin Miller, Kevan Miller, and Adam McQuaid. However, he acknowledges that the upcoming Expansion Draft may strip them of one of those three. An argument can also be made that Kevan Miller is  top-six defenseman in Boston by necessity, not talent. The Bruins are right to consider McAvoy as a non-starter, but Carlo should be in that group too, and originally was. The Bruins have been on the hunt for a top-pair replacement for Chara as well, as the big man has one year remaining on his contract before he surely retires, and moving Carlo would deny them of what could be the perfect in-house replica. Unless Sweeney had a change of heart, perhaps he is trying to entice Sakic with a combination of a potential replacement for Landeskog on the left side (Spooner, Cehlarik, Beleskey, Heinen), another top defensive prospect like World Junior standouts Jakub Zboril, Jeremy Lauzon, or Ryan Lindgren, and one of a plethora of strong center prospects – another major need for the Avs – like Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson, Trent Frederic, Ryan Donato, or Ryan Fitzgerald. In fact, Sakic will reportedly take in the Beanpot Tournament final tonight in Boston, featuring Boston University and Harvard, and will get to see Bruins prospects Forsbacka-Karlsson, Donato, McAvoy, and Wiley Sherman in action. Could that ties into the deal?

There are a lot of question marks remaining about the targets of both teams. After all, the Carlo asking price may have Sweeney moving on to other Colorado targets like former Bruin Jarome Iginla, winger Blake Comeau, or rental defenseman Fedor Tyutin.  A deal is far from a sure thing, but the Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche are definitely talking trades with about two weeks remaining before the March 1st NHL Trade Deadline. Keep an eye on these two teams moving forward.

Bruins Notes: Julien, Beleskey, Becker

As was reported earlier, the Boston Bruins are set to address the public tomorrow about their coaching situation. The announcement will be made regardless of the result in tonight’s match-up against the Original Six rival Chicago Blackhawks. ESPN New Hampshire’s Jimmy Murphy has been keeping a close eye on the situation and believes that, good or bad, a decision has already been made on head coach Claude Julien and the bench boss knows what it is. However, no one else seems to know what it is and speculation is running rampant. Murphy added fuel to the fire by releasing a picture of the Bruins’ internal PR schedule, which features Julien’s name specifically throughout the coming week. So is Julien safe?

Julien has seemingly been on the hot seat for three seasons. After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011, returning to the final in 2013, and winning the President’s Trophy as the league’s top regular season team in 2013-14, back-to-back seasons of missing the playoffs has been unacceptable in Boston, and a possible third in the making requires swift handling. By slim margins or not, the Bruins missing the postseason draws much attention in a city where, since the turn of the century, every pro sports team is expected to not just make the playoffs, but challenge for a championship every year. While many still believe the Bruins will qualify in 2016-17, heads will roll if they don’t and the front office may decide to cut the coach loose before that happens to lessen the blow of missing the playoffs once again. Boston is currently tied for second place with the Ottawa Senators in the Atlantic Division with 52 points, which may not seem so bad, but the Sens have five games in hand, as do the Toronto Maple Leafs right behind them with 50 points. Even the Florida Panthers with 49 points and game in hand and the red-hot Detroit Red Wings, who came back from a three-goal deficit to defeat the B’s on Wednesday to move within six points with three games in hand, are starting to threaten the Bruins playoff hopes. The Bruins are 4-4-2 in their last ten, including that devastating loss to Detroit and shutouts at the hands of bottom-dwellers like the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils.

However, is firing Julien really the right move? The long-time Bruins coach is approaching his 1,000th NHL game behind the bench and has won far more than half of those games, including more than 400 wins in Boston. He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 2009 and is well-respected around the world of hockey. Many have claimed that Julien’s greatest weakness is that he does not work well with young players. However, David Pastrnak, Frank Vatrano and rookies Brandon Carlo and Austin Czarnik have been bright spots for the Bruins in 2016-17. Julien was also not the one who traded Tyler Seguin or Blake Wheeler, both of whom were playing well with him as their head coach, but simply still developing. The Bruins organization has not done well with young talent, but the head coach is not wholly to blame. Many have also argued that Julien has struggled with the power play, and well that has been true from time to time, the Bruins scored on both man-up tries against Detroit on Wednesday and their power play has been increasingly better over the past month. Some Julien mistakes, like the mismanagement of Ryan Spooner and Colin Miller and an inability to find good balance in the forward lines this season, are more inexcusable, but the Bruins struggles reach far beyond that. Does Julien deserve some blame? Yes. However, firing the most successful coach in team history in a season where they still have a very good chance of making the playoffs may be ill-advised for Boston. The decision appears to have been made and the announcement will come tomorrow.

  • With the decision on his coach’s fate already made, Matt Beleskey’s return to the Bruins lineup may be coming a few games too late. However, the team will greatly benefit from having the big forward back in the lineup tonight against the Blackhawks. Beleskey has been out with a knee injury since earlier December, but is returning just in time with the Bruins struggling to both find scoring and to play a more physical defensive game. With Frank Vatrano suffering an injury prior to the beginning of the season and Beleskey getting hurt before Vatrano’s recent return, tonight marks the first time in 2016-17 that the Bruins will have the full complement of forwards that they had expected to have at the ready all season. Although Beleskey is expected to skate alongside Dominic Moore and Austin Czarnik on the fourth line tonight, the Bruins are still trying to find a balance up front and can afford to ease Beleskey back in while they hunt for line chemistry. After scoring a career-high 37 points as a top-nine player for the Bruins last season, he’ll be back in that role sooner rather than later.
  • Bruins prospect Jack Becker has announced his commitment to play college hockey at Michigan Tech.  Drafted by the Bruins in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Draft with little experience beyond high school hockey, Becker was supposed to follow fellow Bruins prospects Trent Frederic and Cameron Hughes to the University of Wisconsin. However, slow development at the junior level with the USHL’s Sioux Falls Stampede changed those plans. Becker is still Division I-bound though, as he heads to Michigan Tech next season. Becker does not project to be an NHL player as of now, but the Bruins signed Frank Vatrano as an undrafted underclassmen out of just an average college program in UMass-Amherst and so far he looks like a sure-fire NHLer. The B’s can only hope that Becker develops late in the same way.

Atlantic Notes: Beleskey, Leafs, St. Louis

Since being injured on December 6th, Matt Beleskey hasn’t skated with the team once – until now. Beleskey returned to practice today to the cheers of his teammates, though he still was in a non-contact sweater. According to Joe Haggerty of CSNNE, the 28-year old winger was skating alongside David Krejci and David Backes when he did get into some rushes; otherwise that spot went to Frank Vatrano.

Beleskey was originally given a six-week timeline, which would be up on Tuesday, which looks like a possibility for the Bruins forward. Late next week might be more realistic, with Friday against Chicago being a likely target.

  • The Maple Leafs are back in action tonight after their bye week, and new backup Curtis McElhinney will wear #35 according to Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun. The Maple Leafs claimed McElhinney off waivers and are expected to give him his first start tomorrow against the Ottawa Senators.
  • The Maple Leafs are playing tonight at Madison Square Garden, where the Rangers are honoring Steven McDonald, a former police officer who passed away Tuesday. He had been a big fan of the Rangers since he was shot in the line of duty 20 years ago, and the team honored him by wearing throwback sweaters in warm-up that had #104 on the back – the number of McDonald’s precinct. McDonald was paralyzed from the neck down in the shooting, but instead of despair he has spread a message of forgiveness since his injury. Adam Graves and Mark Messier were on hand to escort McDonald’s wife and son to center ice.
  • In other pre-game ceremony news, the Tampa Bay Lightning retired Martin St. Louis’ number tonight with former head coach John Tortorella on hand to speak (Torts’ Columbus Blue Jackets are in town to face the Lightning). “He is a man who has been told ’no’ so many times in his career… I just have so much respect for him in how he did it.” Steven Stamkos also spoke about St. Louis, saying “He was, he still is, and he forever will be the heart and soul of this organization.” 

David Backes Cleared To Return

So much for David Backes’ concussion history, potential lasting effects, and a need to ease him back into the lineup. Less than a week after leaving the Boston Bruins’ win against the Buffalo Sabres last Thursday with a concussion and being deemed “out indefinitely“, the big forward was back at practice today. Coach Claude Julien announced that he had been medically cleared for full contact and Backes was back skating with his usual line of David Krejci and Ryan Spooner. Backes left the possibility open that he could return to the lineup as early as tomorrow night, when the Bruins face the Edmonton Oilers. Throughout his career, Backes has returned quickly from head injuries, and that appears to be the case again for the veteran.

While Backes would have liked to have played against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday and gotten some retribution (he said so himself), the Bruins played it cautiously sitting him out the past two games. Unfortunately, after sweeping the season series with Buffalo, Backes (as well as Adam McQuaid and Kevan Miller) will have to wait until next year for another shot at the Sabres. However, after an embarrassing shutout loss to the New Jersey Devils on Monday, Backes’ return has become of vital importance to Boston. Nearly halfway through the 2016-17 season, the Bruins sit tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with the Ottawa Senators, with a lead on the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning, but having played more games than all three teams. At 20-16-4, Boston is not having a bad year, but has struggled to beat playoff-caliber teams and recently has lost bad games against the Devils, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders, and Colorado Avalanche. Still on the search for consistent scoring, the Bruins need all the help they can get up front, and that includes their free agent splurge, Backes. So far in 2016-17, Backes has nine goals and ten assists in 33 games, which is on pace for the worst full season of his career. They were lucky to avoid a long absence from the power forward, but they need Backes to step up his play when he returns to the ice.

Julien also indicated today that Matt Beleskey is on the mend and has begun skating again. Beleskey has been out since mid-December with a knee injury and was given a six-week prognosis for recovery. While it sounds like his return is still a ways off, perhaps close to the projected early February date, it’s good news that another top forward is getting healthy. Once Beleksey, who enjoyed a career-high 37-point season last year, returns it will be the first time that the Bruins have he and Frank Vatrano healthy at the same time this season. They young winger just returned from injury and is already making a difference. Adding Backes and Beleskey back into the mix will give the Bruins the complete top nine that they expected to begin the season with and could help them rediscover their scoring. Julien has always tried to roll four lines deep on offense, and that task has proved to be a struggle so far this season. The Bruins’ growing health may finally solve that problem.

Boston Bruins Place Matt Beleskey On IR, Recall Matt Grzelcyk

The Boston Bruins have added another rookie to their ranks today, calling up Matt Grzelcyk from Providence. The 22-year old defenseman will join the team in Pittsburgh for tonight’s game, the first of a back-to-back. The team has placed Matt Beleskey on injured reserve to make room, after the winger was given a six-week diagnosis for his right knee injury.

Grzelcyk (pronounced Grizz-lick) was the Bruins third-round pick in 2012 but decided to attend Boston University for four seasons where he flourished as a smooth skating powerplay quarterback. At almost a point-per-game pace in his university years, he joined the Providence team this season and has fit right in. 12 points in 25 games has earned him a callup. It’s not clear where he’ll fit in on the back end as the Bruins were already carrying seven defensemen.

If he gets into a game, it’ll be another entry in the under-six-foot club this season for the NHL. As the game goes further away from bruising physical play, speed and puck skills have come to the forefront. While Grzelcyk is by no means tiny, his smaller frame would have been looked over in decades past. Now, we’ll see if his skating ability will let him transition to the NHL level well enough to stick around for a while. The Bruins have already turned a similarly sized Torey Krug into one of the best young defensemen in the league.

Matt Beleskey Out Six Weeks

Boston left winger Matt Beleskey will miss the next six weeks with a right knee injury sustained on a hip check from Taylor Fedun on Saturday against the Sabres, the team announced.

Beleskey is off to a quiet start in his second season with the Bruins, collecting just two goals and three assists in 24 games despite averaging more than 15 minutes of ice time per game.  Last year, he posted a career high in points with 37 in 80 games.

The injury should open up a spot for Ryan Spooner on Boston’s third line left wing, at least in the short-term.  Spooner is believed to be on the trade block after a sluggish start to the season, one that has seen him collect nine points through 25 games.  Frank Vatrano, who is still believed to be a couple of weeks away from returning from a foot injury, also should garner some consideration for that spot in the lineup when he gets the green light to play.

The Bruins are close to getting a bit of good news on the injury front though as right winger Noel Acciari practiced with the team for the first time on Monday since suffering a lower body injury back in early November, notes CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty.  While he won’t directly slot into Beleskey’s spot, he’ll undoubtedly add some energy to Boston’s fourth line when he returns.

Atlantic Division Snapshots: Yzerman, Beleskey, Bjugstad, Bibeau

The Tampa Bay Lightning entered the 2016-17 campaign as a popular pick to emerge from the Eastern Conference to compete for the Stanley Cup championship. While it’s still relatively early, Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is concerned with the team’s inconsistent play, though as Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times writes, that concern is tempered by calm.

Entering tonight’s home contest against Washington, the Lightning boast a record of just 13 – 11 – 1 through their first 25 games and currently reside in fourth place in the Atlantic, seven points behind first place Montreal. If the postseason was to start today, Tampa would be on the outside looking in, one point behind the Capitals for the final wild card spot though Washington has played three fewer games. Despite their standing and the fact the team has lost four in a row, Yzerman is not interested in making a move simply to “shake things up.”

“If there’s an opportunity to make us a better team, I’m certainly willing to explore it. But I like our team. I like the character of our players. We’re very careful of the type of person we bring in and which players we move out. That isn’t going to change.”

The trouble of late, according to Yzerman, has been the team’s lackluster play in their own zone. As Smith notes, Tampa Bay has given up 19 goals over the last four games; a figure which could have been higher if not for the quality play of the team’s net minders.

It’s easy to understand Yzerman’s hesitation to try to solve the team’s problems via the trade market. At this point so few teams have the available salary cap space necessary to make more than minor deals.

If they do decide a deal is in order either at or near the trade deadline, the Lightning do have an appealing asset to market in goaltender Ben Bishop. Bishop, who has been a Vezina Trophy finalist twice in the last three seasons, is in the final year of his contract. With Andrei Vasilevskiy inking a three-year contract extension over the summer and presumably the team’s future starter, the Lightning could move Bishop to address other areas of need.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division:

  • Matt Beleskey of the Boston Bruins was knocked out of this afternoon’s game against Buffalo after absorbing a heavy hit from Sabres blue liner Taylor Fedun, writes Joe Haggerty of CSNNE. Beleskey suffered the lower-body injury late in the first period and his return was ruled out by the team soon thereafter. The gritty forward was a big-ticket free agent signing in the summer of 2015, inking a five-year, $19MM pact with Boston. This season he has struggled, scoring just two goals in 23 games for the Bruins.
  • Struggling to find their way on the ice and having already relieved head coach Gerard Gallant of his duties, the Florida Panthers, under new bench boss Tom Rowe continue to tinker with the lineup in an effort to find some consistency. With Nick Bjugstad returning recently from injury, the team tried lining him up on the right side, instead of at his customary pivot position, to try to ease him back into the lineup. But after five games – and zero points for the 6-foot-6 center – Bjugstad is moving back to the middle, where Rowe feels he will be “more comfortable,” as Harvey Fialkov writes. Currently two points behind Washington for the second wild card slot in the East, Florida needs to improve their play if they want to qualify for the postseason for the second consecutive campaign and a return to normal production from Bjugstad would be a big help in that regard.
  • Finally, with starting net minder Frederik Andersen battling an undisclosed illness and unable to practice yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled Antoine Bibeau from the AHL on an emergency basis, according to Mike Augello (Twitter link). Elliotte Friedman adds that while Andersen is still expected to play, the team wanted certainty just in case, and with the Leafs in Vancouver to play the Canucks tonight, Toronto acted early as a precaution. Bibeau has yet to make his NHL debut and it appears unlikely he will do so tonight. While he has no big league experience, the 22-year-old goalie has appeared in 87 contests over the last three seasons with the Marlies.

Snapshots: Vrbata, Detroit Injuries, Beleskey, Flyers

Arizona right winger Radim Vrbata holds a unique distinction among the 719 players to suit up in the NHL this season, writes Alex Prewitt of Sports Illustrated.  Vrbata is the lone player in the league to be in his third stint with the same organization.  Vrbata played with the Coyotes in 2007-08, then was traded back there again in 2009, staying until 2014.  After a two year stint with Vancouver, he returned to the desert, signing a one year, incentive-laden deal with Arizona this summer.

When he had signed with the Canucks, Vrbata admitted that he never really wanted to leave the Coyotes and had stayed in touch with plenty of players and staffers over the past two seasons with the hope of returning down the road.  The 35 year old enjoyed the familiarity that only Arizona could provide, from the market to the coach (Dave Tippett), to even his linemate in Martin Hanzal.

That comfort level appears to have been quite helpful for Vrbata in his third stint with the team.  After following up a 63 point effort two years ago with arguably the worst season of his career in 2015-16, he’s off to a strong start with Arizona this season with four goals and six assists through his first nine games and is currently skating on their top line.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Red Wings right winger Thomas Vanek is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks with a hip strain, GM Ken Holland told MLive’s Ansar Khan. Holland remains hopeful that defenseman Niklas Kronwall, who has yet to play this season with a knee injury, will be able to return to the lineup in the next week or so.  Meanwhile right winger Tomas Jurco, who is still recovering from offseason back surgery, is likely to be cleared for contact sometime next week.  Holland anticipates Jurco would need another 7-10 days beyond that to get into game shape.
  • Bruins left winger Matt Beleskey is set to be a healthy scratch tonight against Tampa Bay, notes CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty. Beleskey is off to a tough start this season with no points and a -7 rating in nine games.  Prospect Sean Kuraly will make his NHL debut in Beleskey’s spot on Boston’s third line.
  • The Flyers have sent center Scott Laughton to their AHL affiliate in Lehigh Valley on a conditioning assignment, the team announced. The 22 year old suffered a lower body injury back in training camp and is currently on long-term injury reserve.  He’s eligible to be activated on Saturday but it would appear that he’ll get into a couple of games in the minors before joining Philadelphia’s active roster.  Still with Philly, defenseman Andrew MacDonald is expected to miss at least the next week with a lower body injury, the club announced (Twitter link).
