Canadiens Reassign Joshua Roy

November 24, 2025 at 4:47 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Canadiens announced they’ve reassigned forward Joshua Roy to AHL Laval. With no IR activations expected soon, the Habs are set to operate with an open roster spot for the foreseeable future.

Roy, 22, appears to have hit something of a plateau in his development. The 2021 fifth-round pick showed out much better than expected in his first pro season, earning 13 goals and 32 points in 41 games with Laval back in 2023-24. That came on the heels of Roy posting back-to-back First All-Star Team campaigns in the QMJHL following his draft year, so his stock had been on the rise for some time.

Since then, though, Roy has been virtually the same player he was as a rookie. He still hasn’t gotten as long a leash as he did in his first pro season, when multiple call-ups resulted in him notching four goals and nine points in 23 games for the Habs. His usage and production slipped to two goals in 12 games last year, and he’s now only played in three of the nine games he’s been rostered for this season.

During that time, Roy’s AHL production has remained stagnant. After producing 0.78 points per game in 2023-24, that number dropped slightly to 0.74 last year and is at 0.70 through 10 games this season. With Roy failing to carve out consistent minutes at the NHL level despite Kirby Dach, Patrik Laine, and Alex Newhook all dealing with long-term injuries, there’s an increasing risk of him topping out as something of a tweener.

Nonetheless, he’s still only four years out from his draft date and, as a late-round pick, a longer development track should have been expected. He’s still got a couple of years of runway before the Habs could decide to cut ties, although they’ll have their first opportunity to do so this summer as he’s in the final season of his entry-level contract. A non-tender is unlikely considering how he burst onto the scene, but the Quebec native needs to keep up his current scoring in the minors – hopefully inching closer to a point per game – in order to avoid one.

Canadiens Recall Florian Xhekaj, Joshua Roy Remains With Team

November 21, 2025 at 5:01 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

5:15 p.m.: In a somewhat confusing update, Montreal has amended their previous announcement by sharing that Roy remains with the team. That gives Montreal 14 forwards for tomorrow’s contest unless another move is made.

5:01 p.m.: The Montreal Canadiens have recalled one of the toughest-nosed players, having yet to play in the NHL. According to a team announcement, the Canadiens have recalled Florian Xhekaj and reassigned Joshua Roy in a corresponding roster move.

Montreal drafted Xhekaj with the 101st overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft. He plays an eerily similar game to his brother Arber Xhekaj, albeit on offense.

He was drafted relatively high, given his playstyle, scoring 13 goals and 25 points in 68 games for the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs during his draft season. However, Xhekaj exploded on offense the following campaign, registering 34 goals and 65 points in 63 games with a +17 rating.

Even through his transition to professional hockey, Xhekaj looked back. He was one of the most exciting prospects to watch for the Canadiens last season, scoring 24 goals and 35 points in 69 games for the AHL’s Laval Rocket with a whopping 175 PIMs. This season, he has managed two goals and four points in 16 games, with 44 PIMs.

Xhekaj butters his bread in the crease. Reminiscent of Detroit Red Wing Tomas Holmstrom in the early-to-mid 2000s, Xhekaj’s net front presence has become exceptional in the AHL, with most of his goals coming from high-skill deflections. It’ll play well in Montreal, since blue-liners Noah Dobson and Lane Hutson are no strangers to firing the puck on net.

Unfortunately, Xhekaj’s recall comes with some bad news for Roy. The 22-year-old forward has gone scoreless in three games for the Canadiens this season, averaging 9:47 of ice time per game. He’s fared much better with AHL Laval, scoring four goals and seven points in 10 contests.

Canadiens’ Kirby Dach Out Four-To-Six Weeks With Fractured Foot

November 16, 2025 at 11:02 am CDT | by Gabriel Foley 8 Comments

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that forward Kirby Dach will miss the next four-to-six weeks after fracturing his right foot. In his place, Montreal has recalled winger Joshua Roy from the AHL. This marks the third-straight season that Dach has sustained a long-term injury, after facing season-ending knee injuries in each of the last two years.

This injury is luckily not related to any of Dach’s prior absences – but the hits keep on coming for the oft-injured 24-year-old. He was working his way back into a core role in Montreal’s offense this season, with five goals and seven points through 15 games so far. That scoring pace is well above last season, when Dach scored 20 points in 57 games. He is now seven years into his NHL career, but hasn’t yet appeared in more than 70 games in a single season. That healthiest year came in 2021-22, when he scored 26 points with the Chicago Blackhawks. Dach’s career year came in the following season, when he potted 38 points in 58 games in his first year with the Canadiens, before late-season injuries cut his year short.

Montreal was showing restraint with Dach’s minutes, even as his scoring grew. He has only averaged 14 minutes of ice time this season, despite routinely filling a second-line, usually rotating between center and left-wing. That’s proven especially conservative deployment, considering Dach has also appeared on the second power-play unit. But the added care will prove for naught, and Dach will land on the sideline once again.

This could prove a lucrative opportunity for Roy, who hasn’t yet received an extended chance at NHL minutes. The Quebec-native has scored seven points in 10 games for the AHL’s Laval Rockets, good for fifth on the team in scoring. Despite that, he’s only appeared in one NHL game this season, with no notable stat changes. Roy has also received NHL minutes in the last two seasons. He was productive in his first year, netting nine points in his first 23 NHL appearances, but followed it with only two points in 12 games last year. He’s been much more productive in the minors, where he’s totaled 74 points in 98 games across four seasons. If Roy doesn’t stick in the NHL, the Canadiens could turn towards prospect Sean Farrell as their next man up.

Canadiens Reassign Joshua Roy, Marc Del Gaizo

October 30, 2025 at 9:49 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Canadiens announced that forward Joshua Roy and defenseman Marc Del Gaizo have been reassigned to AHL Laval. Their active roster count drops to 21 ahead of what’s a light stretch of games for the Habs, including a mostly home-game schedule through the beginning of November.

Roy, 22, is in the early stages of his third professional season. He was a fifth-round pick in 2021 and now finds himself in the final year of his entry-level contract, making him a restricted free agent next summer.

He and Del Gaizo were recalled together on Oct. 21 ahead of Montreal’s four-game Pacific Division road trip. The Habs were dealing with injuries to Kirby Dach and Patrik Laine at the time, although the former has since returned, intensifying the need for added roster depth on the swing. That trip concluded with an overtime win over the Kraken earlier this week, and the Habs have now decided they don’t need the extra roster depth for their upcoming homestand.

Roy played last week against the Flames but was then in the press box for three straight games. He saw just 7:58 of ice time in what was the 36th appearance of his NHL career and was held off the scoresheet aside from four hits. The 6’0″ winger now carries a 6-5–11 career scoring line with a -8 rating, on pace for 14 goals and 25 points in an 82-game season.

Before his recall, the Quebec native was off to a hot start in Laval with three tucks and an assist through four games. He’ll build on that now as he looks to build his resume in hopes of landing an opening-night job in 2026-27. He’s been a great scoring winger for the Habs’ top farm club, rattling off a 36-35–71 scoring line in 92 career AHL appearances.

Del Gaizo, 26, was signed by the Canadiens at the start of free agency after reaching Group VI UFA status. Since he’s been on the active roster for under 30 days since clearing waivers during the preseason, he doesn’t need waivers again for today’s demotion. He did not appear in any of the four games he was rostered for, so his career NHL games played total stays at 55. He had no points and a +2 rating in four outings for Laval so far this year.

Canadiens Recall Joshua Roy, Marc Del Gaizo; Reassign Owen Beck

October 21, 2025 at 9:49 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Canadiens announced they’ve recalled winger Joshua Roy and defenseman Marc Del Gaizo from AHL Laval. Center Owen Beck was returned to Laval as one of the corresponding transactions. Montreal doesn’t have an open roster spot, though, so they must make a second move to keep their active roster at the 23-man maximum.

The roster shuffling in Montreal comes in the wake of a trio of injuries. Over the weekend, they announced defenseman Kaiden Guhle would miss four to six weeks with a lower-body injury while also ruling forwards Kirby Dach and Patrik Laine out on a day-to-day basis. It would stand to reason that Guhle has or will land on injured reserve as the additional corresponding move.

Sending down Beck, a center, and replacing him with a winger in Roy could be a promising sign for Dach’s availability against the Flames on Wednesday. He’s on the ice at the team’s practice today, according to Marc Antoine Godin of Radio-Canada. Beck played in back-to-back games for the Habs after his recall on Saturday, but the 21-year-old averaged just 8:22 of ice time per game and recorded a minus-one rating and no points. It’s much of the same story for the 2022 second-round pick, who’s gotten a handful of recalls over the past few years but has never been given a particularly long leash. He’s averaged just 9:45 through 15 career NHL appearances, understandably only managing one assist. He’s posted underwhelming possession numbers (47.3 CF% in 58.8 oZS%) in those sheltered even-strength minutes but has been impactful on the dot, winning 53.7% of his faceoffs.

Beck is in his second full professional season. He had 44 points in 64 games for Laval as a rookie last year and had a goal and an assist through his first three games this season before getting recalled. There’s still hope that the 6’0″ pivot can be a long-term fixture down the middle for the Habs, and they won’t hesitate to let him continue to bake in the minors compared to logging limited NHL action.

As for Roy, the 22-year-old has a more established offensive track record in the NHL. A 2021 fifth-round pick, Roy has made 35 appearances for the Habs over the past two years with a 6-5–11 scoring line. Two-way play remains a concern for the skilled winger, but he’s more of a known commodity. He has earned a longer runway from head coach Martin St. Louis in the past, averaging 11:45 of ice time per game for his career while getting occasional power-play reps. He’s also off to a hot start in Laval with three goals and an assist through four games.

Del Gaizo is elevated to give Montreal an extra defenseman for their four-game road trip through the Pacific Division that kicks off tomorrow. They played the last two games without one on the roster after Guhle’s injury. The 26-year-old is a safe option to stash as a No. 7 and has plenty of recent experience, making 46 of his 55 career NHL appearances with the Predators last season. He was a Group VI unrestricted free agent last summer and signed a two-way deal with Montreal before clearing waivers during training camp on his way down to Laval. The 5’11” lefty has a 2-10–12 scoring line in the NHL with a -1 rating. He’s still looking for his first point in Laval through four games, but has a +2 rating. He can remain up for 30 days or play 10 games until he needs waivers again to head back down.

Canadiens Notes: Kahkonen, Xhekaj, Right Wing

September 22, 2025 at 5:00 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 5 Comments

When the Montreal Canadiens signed veteran netminder Kaapo Kahkonen to a one-year, $1.15MM contract this summer, it was speculated by some that he could be viewed as a leading contender for the role of backup goalie behind entrenched starter Sam Montembeault. Today, The Athletic’s Arpon Basu reported that the competition for the job of No. 2 netminder is Jakub Dobes’ “job to lose instead of a real battle.” Basu also added that it appears the Canadiens’ plan in net has been “to have Kahkonen help mentor Jacob Fowler in Laval.”

Fowler, of course, is the Canadiens’ top goaltending prospect and a player widely seen as one of the top goalie prospects in the entire sport. Although Kahkonen is subject to waivers, Basu noted that the player’s $1.15MM cap hit, the maximum allowable value that a team can “bury” in the AHL without any residual cap hit applied to its NHL books, was likely signed to dissuade teams from claiming Kahkonen. The 29-year-old has played in 140 career NHL games and has an .898 save percentage. The Canadiens’ likely backup per today’s report, Dobes, broke into the NHL last season and ended up posting a .909 save percentage across 16 games played.

Some other notes from training camp in Montreal:

  • One of the emerging storylines in Canadiens camp has been the apparent growth of defenseman Arber Xhekaj, as was reported by Katherine Harvey-Pinard of La Presse. Basu echoed that sentiment in his own reporting, calling Xhekaj “outstanding” so far in camp, a performance that has given him a leg up to win a spot in the club’s opening-night lineup. With the way the Canadiens’ defense is constructed at this early stage of the preseason, it appears Xhekaj is competing against Jayden Struble, a fellow young bruising defenseman, to be the partner of Alexandre Carrier on the club’s third pairing. While there’s still a ways to go until these decisions get finalized, it appears Xhekaj has taken a strong early lead in the race for an opening-night lineup spot.
  • Basu identified the competition to be the third winger on a line with Alex Newhook and Zachary Bolduc as the “primary battle” to watch at this stage of training camp. 2021 fifth-rounder Joshua Roy skated on that line Sunday, while Owen Beck began camp in that spot. Both players are competing against veterans Sammy Blais and Joe Veleno for that lineup spot, while Basu also named 2022 third-rounder Vinzenz Rohrer as a dark-horse option. Rohrer has reportedly made a strong impression in training camp, but ultimately would need to be loaned back to Switzerland’s ZSC Lions should he fail to earn a job on Montreal’s season-opening roster.

Atlantic Notes: Lindholm, Roy, McCabe, Ekman-Larsson, Puljujärvi

April 17, 2025 at 1:21 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

Bruins center Elias Lindholm dealt with a back injury throughout his first season in Boston, he revealed to reporters at today’s exit meetings (via Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub). He sustained it in August, and it’s what caused him to miss most of training camp before playing all 82 games for the Bruins. It should offer some explanation for his continued offensive struggles, posting 17-30–47 for a 0.57 points per game rate after signing a massive seven-year, $54.25MM deal with Boston in free agency. This year marked Lindholm’s second straight campaign with less than 20 goals after he potted 42 for the Flames in 2021-22. He remains one of the league’s better faceoff-takers with a 55.2% win rate on nearly 1,400 draws, but that alone doesn’t justify his $7.75MM cap hit without increased offensive production. Boston will hope for a rebound next year to aid in their retooling.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • Canadiens prospect Joshua Roy won’t be on their playoff roster, at least to start. The team announced that they’ve sent him to AHL Laval, which is on the verge of clinching the AHL’s regular-season title and is set to begin a playoff run themselves. The 21-year-old winger had been on Montreal’s roster since March 10 but was a healthy scratch in their final 11 games as they successfully chased a wild-card berth. A 2021 fifth-round pick, Roy ends his second NHL season with just two goals and a minus-six rating in 12 appearances. He’s been a continued first-line threat in Laval, where he scored 20-15–35 in 46 games before his most recent call-up.
  • The Maple Leafs expect defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jake McCabe to be available for Game 1 of their first-round series against the Senators on Sunday, head coach Craig Berube said today (via David Alter of The Hockey News). Neither will dress in tonight’s season finale against the Red Wings. OEL will end up missing the final four games of the season with an upper-body injury, while McCabe will miss a seventh straight game with an undisclosed injury. Both have been invaluable pieces of Toronto’s blue line in 2024-25, averaging north of 21 minutes per game with some of the best two-way metrics on the team.
  • Panthers winger Jesse Puljujärvi was sent to AHL Charlotte yesterday ahead of the playoffs, but he won’t be available immediately if Florida decides to recall him during the postseason. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced they’ve suspended him for two games for an illegal check to the head of Lightning winger Mitchell Chaffee in Tuesday night’s game. It’s the first supplemental discipline of Puljujärvi’s eight-year career.

Canadiens Recall Joshua Roy, Assign Owen Beck To AHL

March 10, 2025 at 7:56 am CDT | by Josh Cybulski 1 Comment

The Montreal Canadiens announced that they’ve recalled forward Joshua Roy on an emergency basis and sent forward Owen Beck to the Laval Rocket of the AHL. Due to the nature of the recall, Roy will not count against Montreal’s team limit of four recalls. The Canadiens play a back-to-back this week on Tuesday and Wednesday in Vancouver and Seattle and needed a change at forward.

It’s the second time this season that Roy has been recalled from the AHL. In his first NHL stint, the 21-year-old dressed in four games and was held pointless. With Laval in the AHL, Roy has tallied 20 goals and 15 assists in 40 games and was named an AHL All-Star last month. He’s been on a heater as of late with goals in three straight games, and four in his last five.

Beck is also an AHL All-Star this season and was named as a late replacement for Roy of all people.  The Peterborough, Ontario native has dressed in 12 NHL games this season with the Canadiens but has had limited success with just a single assist and a -2 plus/minus. The 2022 second round pick (33rd overall) has seen limited ice time, skating less than 10 minutes per game, but has decent underlying numbers and has made his presence known with 23 hits. Beck is in his first season as a professional and has posted solid AHL numbers with 13 goals and 19 assists in 47 games. His demotion will allow him to play more minutes and re-capture his scoring touch with a top AHL team.

Canadiens Assign Joshua Roy To Laval

December 2, 2024 at 6:09 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

A week after recalling him, Joshua Roy is back in the minors.  The Canadiens announced on Monday that the winger has been re-assigned to AHL Laval.

The 21-year-old played in 23 games with Montreal last season, notching nine points in that stretch which had him as a presumptive favorite to land a roster spot coming out of training camp.  However, Roy struggled in the preseason, resulting in him being one of the final cuts in October.

Roy got off to a nice start with the Rocket this season, tallying eight goals and eight assists in 17 games to earn a recall to the big club.  But the offensive success didn’t follow him to the Canadiens as he was held off the scoresheet in four appearances with Montreal while he was limited to just under 11 minutes of action per game.

With the assignment, the Canadiens now have two open roster spots and are only carrying the minimum number of forwards.  However, Roy’s re-assignment could signal that Patrik Laine is ready to return to the lineup.  He sustained a knee injury during the preseason and while he was able to avoid surgery, he has missed the better part of two months rehabbing from it and it appears as if he may be in line to make his Montreal debut on Tuesday.

Canadiens Recall Joshua Roy, Reassign Lucas Condotta

November 25, 2024 at 12:34 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

12:34 p.m.: While no corresponding transaction was required, the Habs made one anyway by announcing they’d reassigned center Lucas Condotta to Laval. The 27-year-old pivot had one goal and a -2 rating in seven games since being recalled near the beginning of the month, averaging 8:12 per game and winning 58.6% of his draws with three blocks and 10 hits.

9:04 a.m.: The Canadiens announced they’ve recalled right-winger Joshua Roy from AHL Laval. Montreal had an open spot on the active roster, so no corresponding moves are necessary.

The Habs give Roy’s first crack at playing time this season ahead of their home game tomorrow evening against Utah. It’s unclear whether Roy will enter the lineup, as he becomes the 14th healthy forward on the Montreal roster, but it’s hard to see the reasoning behind the 21-year-old getting a summons without the intention of playing him.

If he plays, it’ll mark his second season in the NHL after making 23 appearances across a couple of call-ups between January and March last season. Roy is in just his second professional season after being drafted in the fifth round by Montreal in 2021, spending a pair of post-draft seasons with the QMJHL’s Sherbrooke Phoenix before jumping to pro hockey with Laval in 2023. The 6-foot youngster adjusted better than most expected, earning that recall and posting four goals and five assists for nine points with a -2 rating, averaging 12:08 per game in his first NHL audition.

That led to speculation that Roy would make the opening night roster last month. He remained on the roster until the last round of cuts but was assigned to Laval when opening night rosters were due on Oct. 7.

He’s taken the assignment in stride, posting eight goals and eight assists for 16 points over 17 appearances in the AHL. The Quebec-born forward has a +3 rating after finishing with a team-worst -17 mark last year, and he’s three points ahead of Alex Barré-Boulet and Logan Mailloux for the team lead in scoring.

Roy still has two more pro seasons or 137 NHL games left until he requires waivers, so the Canadiens can return him to Laval without any fanfare. It’s not out of the question that he’ll be returned to the minors in short order, but with them obtaining an extension for winger Rafaël Harvey-Pinard’s conditioning loan as he recovers from offseason leg surgery (per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports), there could be a bit of an extended opportunity for him to show he belongs on the NHL roster.
