Minnesota Wild Extend Connor Dewar

June 22, 2022 at 12:05 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

June 22: The Wild have officially announced the two-year, one-way deal for Dewar, which will come with an average annual value of $800K.

June 21: The Minnesota Wild are about to avoid restricted free agency with Connor Dewar, as Michael Russo of The Athletic reports the two sides are closing in on a two-year, one-way contract. Dewar is coming off his entry-level deal and would not be eligible for arbitration this offseason. Financial details have not yet been disclosed.

Selected 92nd overall in 2018, Dewar made quick work of the AHL and was in the NHL on a regular basis this season. In 35 games for Minnesota, he scored two goals and six points, while racking up 25 penalty minutes–including a fight against Mackenzie Entwhistle that quickly endeared him to fans. In the minor leagues, he showed that he has outgrown the AHL by racking up 17 points in 19 games, offensive numbers that continued the upward trend that he has followed to this point.

An option as a fourth-line center for the Wild next season, a one-way contract does suggest that Dewar has the inside track for a roster spot in 2022-23. Given that the 22-year-old is no longer waiver-exempt gives him another advantage in that regard, as does what is likely a relatively inexpensive cap hit. With Minnesota dealing with a tricky financial situation thanks to massive buyout penalties, young, cheap forwards like Dewar will be incredibly important.

There is still plenty of work to do for general manager Bill Guerin. While Kevin Fiala may end up traded instead of extended, there are plenty of other restricted free agents that need new contracts, including Jacob Middleton, one of the team’s deadline acquisitions.

Rem Pitlick, Mats Zuccarello Placed In COVID Protocol

October 28, 2021 at 11:34 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have placed Rem Pitlick and Mats Zuccarello in the league’s COVID-19 protocol, after reports surfaced yesterday suggesting that testing had brought back positive results. The team has recalled Connor Dewar, Kyle Rau and Jon Lizotte from the Iowa Wild to reinforce the NHL lineup.

Minnesota did not indicate whether either Pitlick or Zuccarello have tested positive for coronavirus, and it is important to remember that inclusion in the protocol does not mean that a player has. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol.

The Wild canceled practice yesterday with the test results pending, and now will appear to be without the services of two forwards for tonight’s game against the Seattle Kraken. Michael Russo of The Athletic tweets that the pair will continue to test over the next two days to try and confirm a positive result.

Zuccarello in particular is an extremely important piece for Minnesota, who has averaged more than 18 minutes a night this season and has seven points in six games. The 34-year-old continues to be one of the more effective playmakers in the league, and is coming off a season with 35 points in 42 games.

Pitlick meanwhile made his Wild debut on Tuesday, registering an assist in just over nine minutes of action. The 24-year-old was claimed off waivers earlier this month from the Nashville Predators and has shown a strong goal-scoring ability in the minor leagues. A former Minnesota Golden Gopher, he looks like a nice addition for the Wild early on.

Minnesota Wild Sign Connor Dewar

March 5, 2019 at 12:22 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Minnesota Wild have signed Connor Dewar to a three-year entry-level contract that will begin in the 2019-20 season. Dewar is currently playing with the Everett Silvertips of the CHL where he serves as captain.

Dewar, 19, was a third-round pick of the Wild last summer after going undrafted in his first year of eligibility. That draft pick was used because of his huge breakout season in 2017-18 when he scored 38 goals in 68 regular season games before leading the Silvertips to the WHL finals. He’s back this season as captain and has 75 points in 54 games, earning him this contract and a shot to play professional hockey next season.

It’s not guaranteed that Dewar will be heading to the Iowa Wild, but the undersized forward has shown exceptional talent this season even while dealing with minor injury and could get a taste of the minor leagues on an amateur tryout this spring. That’s only if the Silvertips don’t land a berth in the Memorial Cup though, which they very well could after an excellent season. Either way, the Wild will be focused on the development of another young talent that could give them some offensive punch in the years to come.
