Metro Notes: Hughes, Panarin, Scheel

By tomorrow, the negotiation stalemate between the New Jersey Devils and defenseman Luke Hughes will begin eating into the blueliner’s training camp availability. According to Peter Baugh of The Athletic, although both sides continue to discuss terms, no deal is anticipated before the Devils’ first practice tomorrow.

There haven’t been any meaningful updates regarding the extension this month. The last one came in late August, indicating that Hughes is prioritizing a five-year contract, while New Jersey wants a two-year or eight-year deal.

A five-year contract would walk Hughes into unrestricted free agency at the end of the deal, the same time his brother Jack becomes an unrestricted free agent. Much has been made of the Hughes brothers’ stated desire to play together someday, and the youngest one has become rigid in his contractual demands.

Other notes from the Metropolitan Division:

  • The New York Rangers have one of the highest-profile pending unrestricted free agents for next summer in Artemi Panarin. Given that he’s eligible for an extension and the focal point of the Rangers’ offense, hypothetical extension negotiations were a hot-button topic at today’s media availability with General Manager Chris Drury. Unfortunately, to keep the negotiations out of the spotlight, Baugh reported that Drury refused to speak on negotiations in any meaningful way.
  • Moving back to New Jersey, the Devils will no longer have all four players recently signed to professional tryout contracts at training camp. Earlier today, Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News reported that netminder Adam Scheel won’t participate in New Jersey’s training camp, claiming that he’s taken a separate opportunity elsewhere. There have been no reports indicating where Scheel has signed.

Devils Sign Kevin Rooney, Luke Glendening, Two Others To PTOs

The New Jersey Devils have signed four veterans to professional try-out contracts. The list includes former Devil forward Kevin Rooney, longtime center Luke Glendening, minor-league goalie Adam Scheel, and Russian goalie Georgi Romanov. All four players will report to New Jersey’s training camp when it begins on September 17th.

Rooney will be the most familiar name to Devils fans. He began his pro career with the organization, signing with the Albany Devils as an undrafted free agent in 2016. Within three seasons, Rooney had worked his way up to a hardy, fourth-line role in the NHL. He quickly became known for making gritty and hard-earned plays, but never scored more than 10 points in a single season with the Devils. He moved to the New York Rangers for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, and has spent the last three seasons split between the Calgary Flames’ NHL and AHL rosters. Rooney has continued to offer a stout, depth role everywhere he goes – and will now return to New Jersey looking to earn a role at the age of 32. He has totaled 60 points in 330 NHL games.

Glendening will be another familiar name, if only for his longevity in the league. The now-36-year-old centerman also began his career as an undrafted free-agent, signing with the AHL’s Providence Bruins in 2012 after four seasons at the University of Michigan. Glendening returned to Michigan via a move to the Grand Rapids Griffins in his first full season in the AHL, and played a key, middle-six role during the club’s race to the 2013 Calder Cup. He moved to the NHL in the very next season, and has spent the last 12 years filling a confident, bottom-six role for multiple teams. His career spanned seven years with the Detroit Red Wings, before taking two-year pit stops with the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning. He’s proven consistent throughout, and boasts 166 points and 308 penalty minutes in 864 career games. With New Jersey already boasting a full lineup, Glendening could be set to compete with Rooney for the role of veteran depth-forward.

While Glendening and Rooney battle it out, so will depth goaltenders Scheel and Romanov. Scheel spent last season split between the AHL’s Colorado Eagles and the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies. He managed stout numbers in the higher league, recording a 10-2-2 record and .904 save percentage with the Eagles. But on a weak Utah lineup, Scheel fell to a 5-12-2 record and .884 save percentage. Also an undrafted free agent, he has totaled a .905 save percentage through 101 games, and five seasons, in the AHL. Romanov hasn’t been in North American pros for as long, but posted an encouraging .904 save percentage in 29 games of the 2023-24 season, and a .905 in 21 games last season. Those numbers were enough to earn him a handful of NHL games during the San Jose Sharks’ recent goalie drought. He recorded an 0-6-0 record and .888 save percentage in 10 games with the Sharks. Whoever wins the goalie battle at training camp will likely take on the role of third-string minor-leaguer behind Nico Daws and Jakub Malek.

Avalanche, Adam Scheel Agree To Two-Way Deal

The Avalanche are in agreement with goaltender Adam Scheel on a two-way deal for the remainder of the season, per PuckPedia. It carries the prorated league minimum of $775K as NHL salary and a $115K AHL salary. He’s waiver-exempt and was reassigned directly to AHL Colorado.

Scheel, 25, was on the Stars’ roster briefly in the 2021-22 campaign but hasn’t appeared in an NHL game. Dallas signed him as an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota in 2021, and he split time evenly between their AHL and ECHL affiliates before they non-tendered him in the 2023 offseason. Scheel has since played in the minors on AHL contracts since, spending last year as the starter for the then-independent Chicago Wolves. He recorded a promising .907 SV% in 42 games behind one of the league’s worst teams after spending nearly all of 2022-23 with the Stars’ ECHL affiliate in Idaho, but his performance didn’t yield any NHL interest.

He settled for an AHL contract again for 2024-25, this time with the Avalanche’s top minor-league affiliate. Much like his time in Dallas, he’s split time evenly between AHL Colorado and ECHL Utah this season. Unlike in past years, though, his AHL numbers are more impressive than his ECHL ones. Now part of a three-goalie rotation in the AHL for the Avs with Kevin Mandolese and Trent Miner, he has a 2.61 GAA, .911 SV%, and an 8-1-2 record in 11 outings with a pair of shutouts. He’s nothing more than another injury insurance/recall option for the Avs down the stretch, adding to the inexperienced aforementioned duo of Mandolese and Miner. He’s slated for Group VI unrestricted free agency this summer.

AHL Notes: Marody, Fizer, Johnson, Newkirk, Scheel

AHL fixture Cooper Marody is returning to the Flyers organization after signing a two-year AHL contract with Lehigh Valley yesterday, per a team release. The 27-year-old became a UFA this summer after the two-year, two-way deal he signed with Philadelphia as a Group VI UFA in 2022 expired.

Marody was a sixth-round pick of the Flyers back in 2015 but never signed with them, instead landing with the Oilers as a free agent after a dominant senior season at Michigan in 2017-18. He spent four seasons in Edmonton as one of the AHL’s most dominant scoring threats, routinely putting up over a point per game, but appeared in only seven NHL games for them during that time. He reunited with Philly on the open market, but much like his time in Edmonton, he didn’t get an NHL shot and spent the entirety of his now-expired two-year deal in the minors.

Lehigh Valley hasn’t gotten the best version of Marody, but he’s still been a bonafide top-six AHL contributor. He led them in scoring last season with 56 points (19 goals, 37 assists) in 68 games. Marody has 271 points in 297 career AHL games dating back to his professional debut and will take part in his eighth minor-league season in 2024-25. He’ll play an important role in helping anchor the Flyers’ farm team as they look to graduate prospects from Lehigh Valley in the latter stages of their rebuild.

  • The Blues’ primary affiliate was busy yesterday as the Springfield Thunderbirds announced a trio of signings. Forwards Tarun Fizer and Reece Newkirk, as well as goaltender Cam Johnson, will help fill out St. Louis’ organizational depth next season. Fizer does still carry a bit of upside at age 23, but the former Western Hockey League All-Star has struggled to keep a full-time role in the AHL since turning pro. The 5’11” winger had five points in 30 games for the Belleville Senators last season but looked quite comfortable at the ECHL level, posting 10 points in a 10-game stint for the Allen Americans. He’ll look to provide scoring depth for the T-Birds but may begin the season on assignment to the Blues’ new ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades. Newkirk, 23, was a fifth-round pick of the Islanders and 2019 but became a UFA this summer upon being non-tendered at the conclusion of his entry-level contract. He had three points in 16 games with AHL Bridgeport last season but, like Fizer, was an effective producer in limited ECHL minutes with 14 points in 16 games for the Worcester Railers. Johnson, 30, has backstopped ECHL Florida to three consecutive Kelly Cup championships and will head back there for another campaign. He’s been unreal in ECHL playoff action, posting a .928 SV% and 1.97 GAA with 11 shutouts and a 47-16 record in 63 games over the past three years.
  • The Avalanche continued to replenish their goaltending depth with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles signing Adam Scheel to a one-year deal. Scheel, 25, was an undrafted free agent signing by the Stars out of North Dakota in 2021 but wasn’t given a qualifying offer when his entry-level contract expired in 2023. He spent last season in the starter’s crease for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, making a career-high 42 appearances with a 2.84 GAA and .907 SV%. He’ll compete for playing time with the Avs’ NHL-contracted depth goalies, Kevin Mandolese and Trent Miner.
