Flyers Open To Taking On A Contract And Going Into LTIR

October 14, 2023 at 10:51 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

On the surface, the Flyers don’t appear to have a lot of cap space – less than $900K, in fact, according to CapFriendly – but that number is a bit misleading.  With defenseman Ryan Ellis already ruled out for the year, they can place his $6.25MM AAV on LTIR, opening up considerably more spending room.

To that end, GM Daniel Briere made an appearance on TSN 1200 (audio link) where he indicated that he has told teams that he is open to taking on a contract but as is always the case, helping a team out of a cap bind comes at a cost:

I’ve talked to many teams, and I’ve let them know there’s a possibility for us to help them if they’re able to help us on the back end with some younger guys.

Ottawa is a team that is certainly needing to open up some cap space to sign Shane Pinto and there’s no doubt the two sides have spoken although clearly, there hasn’t been a match in a trade just yet.  Mathieu Joseph and Erik Brannstrom are the two speculated players that they’re open to moving to accomplish that; of the two, Brannstrom might fit in a bit better as he’s young enough to potentially be part of Philadelphia’s future plans on the back end.  That said, it’s worth noting that moving Brannstrom and his $2MM price tag alone isn’t enough to get Pinto signed.

With more than half the league using LTIR or being within $1MM of the Upper Limit of the salary cap, the Sens certainly aren’t the only team that will be looking to open up some extra flexibility so Briere is in the driver’s seat with this one.  Accordingly, Philadelphia appears to be well-positioned to leverage that cap room into adding another young asset to aid in their rebuild.

Philadelphia Flyers Willing To Take On Salary

October 10, 2023 at 9:12 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 11 Comments

Anthony Di Marco of The Fourth Period is reporting that the Philadelphia Flyers are prepared to weaponize their cap space to acquire additional assets. The Flyers begin today with less than $1MM in salary cap space, a number that would translate to roughly $3.9MM at the NHL trade deadline. Now that number might not seem significant, but the Flyers can easily free up over $6MM by placing defenseman Ryan Ellis on LTIR, something they’ve been hesitant to do thus far, but are willing to do to make a trade work.

After years of being slammed up against the salary cap, the Flyers have finally created roster and salary cap flexibility after a summer in which they moved on from veterans Kevin Hayes, Tony DeAngelo, and Ivan Provorov. General Manager Daniel Briere seems fully committed to rebuilding the Flyers and appears willing to take on undesirable contracts in exchange for future assets.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported just two weeks ago that the Flyers were open to taking on Ottawa Senators forward Mathieu Joseph and his $2.95MM cap hit in exchange for a high prospect or a first-round pick, something Ottawa appears uninterested in entertaining. However that could change if they start the season slow without their second and third-line centres.

While a Joseph deal hasn’t materialized the Flyers will likely have their pick of suitors as the flat cap has created a financial landscape in which 19 NHL teams are within $1MM of the salary cap ceiling (including Philadelphia). There are a lot of teams that see themselves as Stanley Cup contenders who will be hard-pressed to make in-season improvements unless they can move out some salary, this is where the Flyers cap space could be leveraged to acquire assets.

The Flyers are early in their rebuild and are at least three or four years away from turning the corner. With that in mind, any contract they take on will probably fall into the one to three-year range similar to the contract they acquired with Cal Petersen. Philadelphia has several of their own undesirable contracts as well as over $5MM in dead cap space for the next few seasons in the DeAngelo buyout and the retained salary on Hayes.

Latest On Rasmus Ristolainen

October 10, 2023 at 2:35 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 2 Comments

  • Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen is currently on injured reserve, though his stay there could be coming to an end. PHLY Sports’ Charlie O’Connor reports that Ristolainen was on the ice for Flyers practice today, and NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jordan Hall relays word from Flyers GM Daniel Brière that Ristolainen’s IR placement can be backdated, and he therefore could become eligible to play the team’s season-opening contest against Columbus on Thursday. Ristolainen showed improved form under head coach John Tortorella last season and if he plays his activation could mean rookie Emil Andrae is assigned to the AHL or Felix Sandström gets placed on waivers.

Latest On Tyson Foerster

October 5, 2023 at 10:00 am CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

O’Connor writes on X that Foerster is skating on a line at today’s practice alongside Flyers number-one center Sean Couturier and established top-six contributor Joel Farabee, while Brink “looks like an extra.” This could indicate that Foerster is ticketed for top-line NHL duty to start the season while Brink gets sent back to AHL Lehigh Valley, though it’s obviously not a sure thing. Anything can happen still at this stage of the preseason, though this development does suggest that Flyers fans should expect to see Foerster wearing the orange and black on opening night next week.
