Montreal Offered Extension To Marc Bergevin
Oct 7: Just before Bergevin spoke with the media regarding Carey Price, a Canadiens spokesperson told reporters including John Lu of TSN that there will be no further updates on the general manager’s contract status until the end of the season. Bergevin will play out the year and discuss it afterward.
Sep 29: Though the main front office news yesterday was the extension signed with Julien BriseBois in Tampa Bay, Pierre LeBrun also included another note in his appearance on TSN’s Insider Trading. The Montreal Canadiens, fresh off an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final, offered general manager Marc Bergevin a contract extension in July.
What I can tell you is this. He has talked to owner Geoff Molson about his future dating back to last January. I’m told they spoke again last March. I’m told in July Molson made an offer. There has not been an agreement, read into that what you will. I believe Marc Bergevin wants to stay, but they obviously have to reach a deal that works for both sides. Both sides continue to talk, and there’s a lot of pressure on this situation.
Bergevin’s tenure in Montreal has been anything but smooth. Hired away from the Chicago Blackhawks in 2012, he came to a Canadiens team that had just gone 31-35-16, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Michel Therrien would return as head coach, leading the team back to the postseason in a lockout-shortened schedule, and then to consecutive 100+ point seasons and a Conference Finals appearance in 2014. Things didn’t continue so well though, and when Bergevin decided in 2016 to trade all-star defenseman P.K. Subban, many fans were at their breaking point.
In time, that trade turned out to be accepted by many thanks to the style of play and leadership Shea Weber brought back to the team. But there was a period when Bergevin appeared to be on his last legs in Montreal. The public departures of Alexander Radulov and Andrei Markov caused many to call for change at the top, but Molson stuck with his GM through some lean seasons and was rewarded when they went on a Cinderella-like run this year. The Canadiens entered the postseason as huge underdogs against the North-leading Toronto Maple Leafs, but pulled off a miraculous first-round comeback and then stormed their way to the finals.
That performance, including a midseason coaching change to replace veteran Claude Julien with upstart Dominique Ducharme, will buy Bergevin some more time if he wants it. An extension offer comes as no surprise, but the question now is whether a deal can be worked out before the season begins. In July, Ducharme and his staff were given three-year extensions. Now the wait is on to see whether their boss will get one of his own.
Carey Price Enters Player Assistance Program
The Montreal Canadiens had previously stated that Carey Price was away from the team with a non-COVID illness and would not be able to practice before the start of the regular season. Today, the league announced that Price is voluntarily taking part in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. The program is designed to help players and their families with mental health, substance abuse, and other problems.
Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin spoke to the media and explained that he is confident that Price will return to the team at some point this season. Today, he’s thinking of the person, not the goaltender. Price will be away from the team for a minimum of 30 days, and Montreal will go with Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault as the NHL tandem.
Regardless of what has taken him to the program, the hockey world including those of us at PHR wishes Price and his family well.
Canadiens "Less Confident" Price Will Be Ready For Season Opener
- The Montreal Canadiens were hoping that Carey Price would be ready for the start of the regular season after undergoing knee surgery earlier this offseason, but that may not be the case. Head coach Dominique Ducharme told reporters including John Lu of TSN that Price is currently dealing with a non-COVID illness that is keeping him off the ice and the team is “less confident now” that he’ll be ready for the first game. The fact that the Canadiens claimed Sam Montembeault off waivers this weekend makes sense if that’s the case, though Price is still not expected to miss a huge chunk of the regular season schedule.
Montreal Canadiens Sign Arber Xhekaj
After making a name for himself at training camp, Arber Xhekaj isn’t going back to junior empty-handed. The Montreal Canadiens have signed the young defenseman to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal carries an average annual value of $828K, including signing bonuses in all three seasons. Though he’ll now be under an NHL contract, Xhekaj is on his way back to the OHL to join the Kitchener Rangers for the upcoming season.
If you are looking for feel-good hockey stories, look no further than Xhekaj. The 20-year-old was not only passed over in the NHL draft multiple times but was also not even selected in the OHL draft, despite hailing from Hamilton, Ontario. He received a tryout with the Kitchener Rangers after dominating in the GOJHL and made the team in 2018. His first year of major junior resulted in just three points in 59 games, but Xhekaj is nothing if not adaptive. He scored six goals and 17 points in his sophomore season for the Rangers and was one of the team’s most important defensemen.
Now, after being invited to NHL training camp and earning an entry-level deal, he’s proved his doubters wrong once again. The 6’3″ 204-lbs defenseman is part of the Montreal organization and well on his way to playing at the professional level. He’ll return to Kitchener this season for his overage year, giving the Rangers a bit of a roster crunch. They’ll take it though, as Xhekaj should be an imposing figure on the blueline once again as things get back to normal in the junior league.
Jake Evans Signs Three-Year Extension With Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens have signed center Jake Evans to a three-year, $5.1MM extension, the team announced today. The contract will pay him $1.7MM per season from 2022-23 to 2024-25. TVA’s Renaud Lavoie reports that the deal carries a flat $1.7MM in salary every season.
Evans signs his extension after seeing his role increase considerably during the playoffs. Evans jumped into a top-six role during a short seven-game stint, forming a formidable shutdown line with Philip Danault and Brendan Gallagher. A concussion suffered on a hit from Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele knocked him out for the majority of June, but Evans returned for three games in their Stanley Cup Final series against Tampa Bay. He finished with a goal and an assist in seven games.
A seventh-round pick in 2014, Evans has gotten into 60 career NHL games, all over the past two seasons. He’s got five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in that timeframe, averaging 11:31 per night.
Those numbers will surely jump this season, as Evans is expected to take on a regular top-nine role with the club. Likely serving as the team’s third-line center behind Nick Suzuki and Christian Dvorak, he’ll be entrusted with more ice time and opportunity after some recent strong showings. He’ll attempt to bridge the gap in the bottom-six left by the departure of Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
Moving forward, Evans’ ceiling likely isn’t too high considering he’s now 25 years old. However, he does have the potential to be an important bottom-six piece for the team for years to come, and this extension shows that Montreal feels the same way.
Canadiens Claim Samuel Montembeault Off Waivers
The Canadiens have added to their goaltending depth as Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is among those reporting (Twitter link) that they’ve claimed goaltender Samuel Montembeault off waivers from Florida.
The 24-year-old spent last season with Syracuse of the AHL on a split affiliation between the Panthers and Lightning. As a result, he was limited to just 13 games, posting a 2.86 GAA with a .898 SV% in that span. However, Montembeault does have some NHL experience under his belt, playing in 25 contests with Florida between 2018-19 and 2019-20. He started as Florida’s backup in 2019 before Chris Driedger forced his way onto the NHL roster, pushing Montembeault down at that time.
The Canadiens are currently without starting goaltender Carey Price who is still recovering from offseason knee surgery and this move would suggest that Montreal is at least hedging their bets against him not being ready to start the season. As things stand, Montembeault will back up veteran Jake Allen with prospects Cayden Primeau and Michael McNiven likely to be assigned to AHL Laval.
Montembeault is on a one-year, two-way contract that pays $750K in the NHL, $250K in the AHL, and has a guaranteed payment of $350K. He will be a restricted free agent with arbitration eligibility this summer.
Montreal’s Sami Niku Suffers Concussion
Saturday: The Canadiens announced that Niku suffered a concussion on the play and is out indefinitely.
Friday: Newly signed Montreal Canadiens defenseman Sami Niku has left tonight’s preseason game against the Ottawa Senators and won’t return. The team reports he suffered an upper-body injury, leaving the game after a hit from Ottawa’s Josh Norris.
Niku signed a one-year, two-way deal with Montreal on September 24 after having his contract with the Winnipeg Jets mutually terminated. It was going to be the second year of a two-year deal for him with a cap hit of $725,000.
Drafted 198th overall in 2015, Niku’s stock rose steadily within the Winnipeg organization after his draft year. He had two impressive seasons with JYP in the Liiga in 2015-16 and 2016-17, tallying 38 points in 97 games while holding his own defensively in a professional league.
It hasn’t gone nearly as smoothly for Niku in the NHL, though, struggling to land a full-time spot with the team. Niku spent the majority of 2020-21 on the taxi squad, getting into just six games with Winnipeg and no AHL time whatsoever. Over a four-year career in Winnipeg, Niku’s gotten into 54 games, scoring two goals and eight assists for 10 points.
Niku was hoping a change of scenery and an uncertain defense in Montreal could translate into a consistent lineup spot this season. With Shea Weber missing the entire year and Alexander Romanov possibly moving into a top-four role, there’s space to fight for on the bottom pairing. Without a more extended internal scouting of their newly acquired talent, though, Niku’s opportunities to enter the lineup could be more limited than otherwise. He’ll be fighting for games played with more experienced talents like Brett Kulak and Chris Wideman. It’s not at all a guarantee that Niku is able to translate this one-year deal into a full-time role.

Price, Edmundson, And Caufield All Expected To Resume On-Ice Activity Next Week
- After stopping on-ice workouts for defenseman Joel Edmundson and goaltender Carey Price, both Canadiens are expected to resume those next week, mentions TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie (Twitter link). Edmundson was listed as day-to-day entering training camp while Price’s availability for the start of the season remains in question following offseason surgery. Winger Cole Caufield is also close to returning after being shut down following a minor injury during the warmup of an intrasquad game.
