Okposo was scratched in their Game 6 loss after a tough Game 5 showing, but his replacement, Nick Cousins, didn’t have much of an impact in his first appearance since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final. Acquired from the Sabres before the trade deadline, the 36-year-old Okposo has two assists in 16 playoff games for the Cats while averaging 8:36 per game. If Florida avoids making history by blowing a 3-0 series lead in the Final tonight, they’ll incur a $500K cap overage penalty next season without the space to accommodate Okposo’s performance bonus for winning the Cup, CapFriendly points out.

Snapshots: Bobrovsky, Ekblad, Nugent-Hopkins, Smith
Florida Panthers fans are breathing a big sigh of relief this morning, with both star defender Aaron Ekblad and Vezina-finalist goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky good to go after missing the team’s Sunday morning practice, per Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now (Twitter link). Neither player were limited in the team’s Game 6 loss – with Bobrovsky facing 19 shots and Ekblad playing 21:37 in ice time – suggesting that their absences were merely for maintenance. Still, every update matters as the Panthers look to skid three straight losses in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Edmonton Oilers have outscored Florida 18-t0-5 over that stretch, with Bobrovsky posting a collective 0.793 save percentage. The Panthers will now return home for a winner-takes-all Game 7, seemingly still at full strength.

CAA is the choice agency of many NHL stars, including Sidney Crosby, Matthew Beniers, Mathew Barzal, and Cole Caufield. It’s also the agency most akin to changing scenery – representing the recently-traded Pierre-Luc Dubois, rumored trade chip Rutger McGroarty, and hardened trade rumor veteran Jack Eichel. Smith takes on the new representation while looking to vindicate his final year at a $5MM price tag, though his 13 goals and 40 points last season fell short of expecations.
Free Agent Focus: Florida Panthers
Free agency is now just a bit more than a month away and teams are looking ahead to when it opens. There will be several impact players set to hit the open market in July while many teams have key restricted free agents to re-sign as well. We continue our look around the NHL with an overview of the free agent situation for the Panthers.
Key Restricted Free Agents
F Anton Lundell – This summer marks the first chance for Anton Lundell to negotiate a raise, after paving his way into a strong role on the team’s middle-six after making his NHL debut in 2021-22, at the age of 19. Lundell scored 18 goals and 44 points in 65 games in his rookie years, both tallies that remain career-highs, though he’s since combined for 112 points through his first 216 career games and shown plenty of value off of the puck. To boot, Lundell has found an extra scoring touch this postseason, so far posting 16 points in 22 playoff games as the Panthers look to win the first Stanley Cup in club history. That renewed scoring will surely necessitate a bump in Lundell’s looming pay raise, though his impressive two-way ability and role on both special teams already warrant a hefty contract. At 22, a long-term deal would take Lundell through the bulk of his prime years – likely exactly what the Panthers will hope to guarantee this summer.
D Josh Mahura – Florida claimed Mahura off of waivers from the Anaheim Ducks ahead of the 2022-23 season, and quickly awarded him a routine role on the third pairing. Mahura played in all 82 games of Florida’s last season, posting 16 points in what was the first full year of his career. The performance was enough to earn him a one-year, $925K contract extension last summer, though Mahura didn’t get much of a chance for an encore, with a lower-body injury limiting him to just 30 games and nine points this season. He’s been replaced by a rotation of Dmitry Kulikov, Tobias Bjornfot, and Uvis Balinskis – with Kulikov nabbing the day-to-day role. Luckily, Kulikov is also facing free agency, which could give Mahura a chance to reclaim his role on a cheap contract next season.

Key Unrestricted Free Agents
F Sam Reinhart – Adding to the headache of extending their hopeful second-line center of the future, Florida will also need to find a price for Sam Reinhart after an explosive season. Reinhart scored 57 goals and 94 points this season – the most goals any Panther has managed any Panther since Pavel Bure in the 2000-01 season. The performance will warrant a significant reward this summer, though it’s hard to price Reinhart after a near-30-point jump in scoring between last year and this year. But while he may not always rival 60 goals a season, Reinhart has found goal-scoring consistency over his three seasons with Florida and should garner the price tag of a top-line scorer as a result.
F Vladimir Tarasenko – The Panthers acquired Tarasenko at the Trade Deadline, with Florida sending one conditional pick, either a third or fourth rounder, and a 2025 third round pick back to the Ottawa Senators. And despite some cold streaks, Tarasenko ultimately vindicated the acquisition with 14 points in 19 regular season games and nine aptly timed points in 22 postseason games. He’s been a strong addition to the team’s middle-six, though looking much more slowed than in his prime years. Tarasenko has offered great depth scoring in his veteran years, though he could be a casuality of Florida’s limited cap space, with two much more notable free agents higher on the team’s priority list. He’ll be hotly coveted should he enter the open market, offering 119 career playoff games and Stanley Cup-winning precedent.
D Brandon Montour – Keeping up the important role-players facing the market, Florida will
need to find a way to price out their defensive group, with Brandon Montour due for a new deal this summer and Aaron Ekblad entering free agency next summer. The duo have combined with Gustav Forsling to create a defensive corps that’s served as Florida’s unrelenting consistent as the year has gone on. One of the three defenders is able to step up no matter what situation the team is facing, playing a major role in the team’s drive to a second Stanley Cup Finals. Montour even managed a career-year last season, posting 16 goals, 73 points, and 107 penalty minutes in 80 games. He quieted down quite a bit this year, returning to just 33 points in 66 games. Montour’s impactful role will make him hard to let go, though a precedent of high scoring and plenty of outside interest could be enough to price Montour out of Florida’s budget.
D Oliver Ekman-Larsson – Among the stars needing new deals, Florida also has seven depth skaters set to enter unrestricted free agency. The list includes important pieces of Florida’s postseason run, including Nick Cousins, Ryan Lomberg, and Kyle Okposo. But among the punch, it’s Ekman-Larsson who seems to have made the biggest case for a new deal. The veteran defender saw a small return to form this season, recording 32 points in 80 games, the most he’s managed since the 2018-19 season. He looked more confident in the process, better filling a smaller role than what he had in Vancouver. Florida will have to comb through their depth for viable NHL talent with so many depth pieces entering the market, and the existence of Mahura and Balinskis could be enough to push Ekman-Larsson out of a role. But with a strong performance following his move, and likely just a few years left in his career, it’s hard to think Ekman-Larsson would ask a hefty price to stay with a playoff team.
G Anthony Stolarz – Stolarz filled Florida’s backup role all season long, stepping up while Spencer Knight spent time in the AHL and NHL Player’s Assistance Program. Knight is expected to be back at full force next season, though Stolarz has certainly done enough to show his NHL value – posting 16 wins and a .925 save percentage in 27 appearances this season. The Panthers have $4.5MM committed to Knight in each of the next two seasons and will want to reap some kind of return for that price tag soon. But Stolarz’s strong performance behind Sergei Bobrovsky should be enough to warrant attention in a year with plenty of teams looking for goaltending support.

Projected Cap Space
The Panthers are set to enter the summer with just $20.02MM in projected cap space. That should be plenty to renew Lundell and one other top-line player, whether it be Reinhart or Montour, though the need to fill so many depth positions will likely quickly run up Florida’s budget. They’ll need one of their top names to take a miracle discount if they want to get through the summer without any major losses – though the heft of pending free agents could provide great opportunity for young players like Mackie Samoskevich, Justin Sourdif, and Balinskis to earn daily roles.

Panthers Enter ECHL Affiliation Agreement With Savannah Ghost Pirates
- The Panthers have entered into a “multi-year” affiliation agreement with the ECHL’s Savannah Ghost Pirates, per a team announcement. They said late last week that they wouldn’t be renewing their ECHL affiliation with the Florida Everblades, who have won three consecutive Kelly Cup titles. With the move, the Panthers land an ECHL affiliation much closer to their primary minor-league club, the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. Considering moves between AHL and ECHL affiliates occur almost daily, it’s a better setup for the club’s fringe minor-leaguers. The Ghost Pirates entered the league in advance of the 2022-23 campaign and have spent the last two seasons as the second-tier affiliate of the Golden Knights. They’ve yet to make the ECHL’s Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Poll: Who Will Win The 2024 Conn Smythe Trophy?
The Edmonton Oilers have finally punched back in the Stanley Cup Finals, landing the uppercut of an 8-1 win to push off the announcement of a Stanley Cup champion for at least one more game. It was just the ninth time that a team has scored eight or more goals in the Stanley Cup Finals – a loss that stings a little extra for the Panthers, who also allowed the Vegas Golden Knights to score a record-setting nine goals in last year’s Cup-clinching Game 5. Edmonton achieved the feat on the back of a historic performance from superstar Connor McDavid who, with three assists in Game 4, reached 32 assists to break Wayne Gretzky’s record for assists in a single postseason. McDavid’s record-breaking performance, as well as Sergei Bobrovsky’s Cup Finals benching, throws a major wrench into the list of Conn Smythe Trophy candidates, regardless of the Cup winner.
In a debate between a stifling McDavid and a struggling Bobrovsky, it seems Aleksander Barkov would be the de facto beneficiary. Barkov – the reigning Selke Trophy winner – has closely shadowed McDavid for most of the Cup finals so far, doing as well as any player could to keep McDavid close before Florida’s breakdown in Game 4. Barkov has added four points in four Cup finals games as well, bringing his postseason totals up to a team-leading 21 points in 21 games. Barkov has been perhaps the biggest piece of Florida’s success both this postseason and across the last few seasons as a whole. Barkov has shown elite two-way ability throughout this postseason, likely earning him a spot above any other Panthers skater in the Conn Smythe debate. But there’s no arguing the hefty impact Bobrovsky has brought to these playoffs. He was boasting a .916 save percentage through 20 games before his abhorrent Game 4, when he allowed five goals on just 17 shots. Bobrovsky is also a finalist for the Vezina Trophy and could cement a ’Hall of Fame’ legacy with a win of both the Vezina and the Cup.
Of course, the Oilers boast two prime Conn Smythe candidates of their own in McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Florida is just three periods away from a Stanley Cup win, while the Oilers will need at least nine, significantly hampering Edmonton’s chance of taking home playoff MVP. After all, a member of the losing team hasn’t won a Conn Smythe since Jean-Sebastien Giguere in 2003. But McDavid’s rivaling – and likely soon topping – of 40 playoff points could be enough to warrant the nod. That feat has only been managed by two other players – three times by Gretzky and once by Mario Lemieux. Crossing 40 points has resulted in a Conn Smythe win in three of those four cases, though Gretzky lost the 1993 trophy to Patrick Roy. If not McDavid to buck the trend, then Draisaitl is certainly a strong candidate – boasting 30 points in 22 playoff games and willing the Oilers through the first two rounds with unprecedented scoring.
The list of Conn Smythe candidates has come down to just a few, though who could take home the hardware seems up in the air after a shocking Game 4. Barkov, Bobrovsky, Forsling Lead Conn Smythe Race Entering Game 4
With the Panthers going up three games over the Oilers in last night’s win, it’s truly safe to start talking about Conn Smythe candidates. Shayna Goldman and Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic wasted no time breaking down some of the leading candidacies this morning. Should the series end without a catastrophic implosion on Florida’s part, there are three leading finalists for the playoff MVP honor: captain Aleksander Barkov, defensive stalwart Gustav Forsling and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky is trying his hardest to pull away from the pack, allowing only four goals through three Cup Final games and posting a .953 SV%. He may be going so far as to solidify a spot in the Hall of Fame, let alone a Conn Smythe, but as Goldman and LeBrun dive into, it shouldn’t demerit the elite performances from Barkov and Forsling over the last two months that are more-than-deserving of recognition.
Panthers End ECHL Affiliate Agreement
Kevin Kurz of The Athletic is reporting that Philadelphia Flyers forward Sean Couturier had surgery after the season to repair a sports hernia. Couturier had a very eventful 2023-24 season after missing the previous season due to a back issue that required multiple surgeries.
The Flyers reportedly knew about the sports hernia as Couturier played through the ailment for much of the season and it clearly had an impact on his play as the 31-year-old managed just a goal and eight assists in his final 34 games. Couturier was named the Flyers captain back in February and is expected to be back to full health by the time training camp rolls around in September.

- Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia is reporting that Ottawa Senators assistant coach Daniel Alfredsson wants to put in serious time as an assistant before becoming an NHL head coach. The Senators reportedly talked to their former long-time captain about the head coach position, but Alfredsson told management that he wanted to learn the ropes before taking on the job. Alfredsson will be joined behind the Senators bench by new head coach Travis Green as well as assistants Mike Yeo, Nolan Baumgartner, and Ben Sexton.
- The Florida Panthers and their ECHL affiliate the Florida Everblades have reportedly ended their affiliation agreement. The agreement between the ECHL and NHL franchises began in 2022-23 and included the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. While the partnership was short lived it was incredibly successful as the Everblades won the Kelly Cup in both years of the deal, while the Panthers are in their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final. The Everblades have previously been the affiliate for Nashville, Carolina and Tampa Bay and will announce a new affiliation in the coming weeks.
Panthers Aleksander Barkov And Vladimir Tarasenko To Play Game 3
Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will dress tonight in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Edmonton Oilers (as per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman). The Panthers lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 and will be looking to grab a stranglehold as the series shifts to Edmonton. The 28-year-old was a question mark for tonight after leaving Game 2 on Monday night. Barkov took a high hit from Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl midway through the third period that resulted in a two-minute minor penalty.
This year’s Selke Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defensive forward, Barkov has two assists in the Stanley Cup Final and has tallied six goals and 13 assists in 19 games in the playoffs.
Friedman also tweeted that Panthers forward Vladimir Tarasenko will dress for Game 3 tonight. The 32-year-old has been dealing with an undisclosed injury and has three goals and four assists in 19 playoff games and has averaged just under 14 minutes a game in ice time. The 2019 Stanley Cup champion was acquired by the Panthers on March 6th from the Ottawa Senators for a fourth-round draft pick in 2024 and a third-round draft pick in 2025. Given Tarasenko’s offensive production, it’s fair to wonder how much the injury has limited his play, Tarasenko had 23 goals, and 32 assists in 76 regular season games split between Florida and Ottawa.
Michael Russo of The Athletic tweeted that with Barkov and Tarasenko in the lineup, the Panthers will likely elevate Evan Rodrigues to the top line, while Carter Verhaeghe will move to a line with Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk.
Aleksander Barkov Likely Good To Go For Game 3
- With plenty of eyes on the status of Aleksander Barkov ahead of Game 3, Jameson Olive, the Senior Digital Content Manager of the Florida Panthers reported that Barkov looked and felt good today. They will continue to monitor his status during the team’s skate in Edmonton tomorrow. After taking an elbow to the head from Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl towards the final minutes of Game 2, Barkov’s status has already led to a fair amount of controversy in the Stanley Cup Final.

Cup Final Notes: Suspensions, Barkov, Nurse, Ekblad, Luostarinen
Don’t expect supplemental discipline to be announced today for a pair of Oilers forwards that laid controversial hits in last night’s Game 2 loss. Leon Draisaitl’s check to the head of Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov that knocked him out of the game will go unpunished past the two-minute minor assessed on the play, TVA’s Renaud Lavoie reports. Warren Foegele also won’t receive a suspension for his knee-on-knee hit on Eetu Luostarinen that got him tossed from the game in the first period, per ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski.
That’s good news for an Edmonton squad that needs to battle back from a 2-0 series deficit as the series shifts to their ice later this week. The Oilers became the first team since the Penguins in 2008 to score one goal or less in the first two games of a Stanley Cup Final. While they were dominant but stymied by Panthers netminder Sergei Bobrovsky in their Game 1 loss, Game 2 saw Florida’s defense limit the Oilers to 19 shots on goal and no high-danger chances at even strength. Draisaitl, in particular, would be a huge loss – he’s second on the club in playoff goals (10) and points (28) in 20 games.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice said today that his first-line center isn’t feeling any worse this morning after taking the German forward’s elbow to his jaw area but will undergo further evaluation tomorrow (via Florida Hockey Now’s George Richards). The team hasn’t confirmed the nature of Barkov’s injury, but speculation indicates he’s likely in concussion protocol. Barkov, 28, is tied for the team lead in postseason scoring with 19 points in 19 games and has averaged 21:31 per game, second to Sam Reinhart among Florida forwards.
- Speaking to reporters via Zoom this morning, Oilers bench boss Kris Knoblauch had no update on the status of defenseman Darnell Nurse (per NHL.com’s Nick Cotsonika). The much-maligned blue liner missed significant chunks of last night’s loss after taking an awkward hit from Panthers winger Evan Rodrigues late in the first period (video link).
