Injury Notes: Hughes, Dunn, Stars

The Vancouver Canucks have yet to play with a healthy core this season, and unfortunately, that trend will continue tonight. While winger Brock Boeser will be back in the lineup as reported earlier today, now defenseman Quinn Hughes is injured and will miss tonight’s game, per The Athletic’s Thomas Drance. After signing a six-year, $47.1MM extension prior to the season starting, Hughes has performed well with two points in three games while logging 27:39 a night. Veteran defenseman Brad Hunt draws into the lineup in his place, according to the team’s line rushes.

More injury notes ahead of tonight’s games:

  • After missing the past two games with an injury, The Athletic’s Ryan S. Clark reports Seattle Kraken defender Vince Dunn will return to the lineup. Slotting back onto a pair with Jeremy Lauzon, Dunn has an assist in two games but has played just 15:08 per game, a far cry from the role he was expected to play with the team. He’ll have to work overtime now in order to work his way back into the team’s top-four.
  • The Dallas Stars are missing both John Klingberg and Jason Robertson for tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, per the Dallas Morning News’ Matthew DeFranks. Both remain day-to-day as Robertson has yet to slot into the lineup this season, while Klingberg played just 10:21 of the Stars’ first game. It’ll be tough to knock off the Penguins, who have yet to lose in regulation, without two key players.

John Klingberg Looking For Long-Term Extension

The focus right now may be on Adam Fox as the next defenseman to sign a massive contract, but he’s certainly not the only one. Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg is in the final season of his seven-year, $29.75MM deal signed in 2015, and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Jeff Marek of Sportsnet reports that Klingberg’s camp is looking for an eight-year extension worth somewhere between $62MM and $66MM.

Marek, who explained his report on Hockey Night In Canada, made clear that the Stars and Klingberg are hoping to stay together beyond this season if possible. The big comparables for the 29-year-old defenseman are Darnell Nurse, Seth Jones, and Dougie Hamilton, who all inked massive deals this summer that bought out exclusively UFA years.

A $64MM deal would mean an $8MM cap hit for the veteran defenseman, a number that was eclipsed by all three of the listed names and would tie Klingberg–with Jacob Trouba, Thomas Chabot, John Carlson, and Brent Burns–for the 13th-highest among all defensemen next season.

There are few defensemen who have been so consistent offensively as Klingberg throughout his eight-year career. The 2010 fifth-round pick has recorded at least 32 points in each year and has amassed 327 overall in his 479-game career. That ranks ninth in the league over that period, more than both Hamilton and Jones despite Klingberg playing in fewer overall games.

With that in mind, the reported ask actually doesn’t seem excessive for Klingberg, though a deal like that would certainly still bring plenty of risk for the Stars. Of note, he’ll turn 30 next summer meaning an eight-year deal would likely come with several seasons of steep decline for the smooth-skating defenseman.

There’s also already the presence of Miro Heiskanen on the roster, making $8.45MM of his own for most of the next decade. Dallas would become just the second team in the league with two defensemen making at least $8MM per season, joining San Jose who has had their own salary cap issues because of the massive deals for Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns.

If Klingberg doesn’t get the deal he wants from Dallas, he’ll enter free agency as a highly-coveted asset, but he then wouldn’t be able to sign an eight-year pact. Only the Stars can offer him a deal more than seven years in length, unless they trade his rights at some point.

Rick Bowness Unconcerned About Expiring Contract

Going into the final year of a contract as a coach is a scenario that a lot of teams like to try to avoid but that’s not the case with the Stars and bench boss Rick Bowness.  Speaking with Matthew DeFranks of the Dallas Morning News regarding his expiring deal, Bowness stated  “That doesn’t bother me one bit. Shouldn’t bother the players”.  The 66-year-old also admitted to turning down three deals with more money and term before originally committing to Dallas so clearly, there is some comfort in going with short-term agreements.  After a disappointing and injury-riddled season, many expect the Stars to bounce back this season which would bode well for his future behind the bench.

Colorado’s Valeri Nichushkin Week-To-Week With Upper-Body Injury

The Colorado Avalanche are being hit with the injury bug early this season, as The Athletic’s Peter Baugh reports that forward Valeri Nichushkin is sidelined week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

With the team already missing Devon Toews and Pavel Francouz from their lineup prior to the season’s start, the team’s forward core has now lost three members in the past three days. Captain Gabriel Landeskog is suspended for the next two games, Nathan MacKinnon’s season debut is on hold as he remains on COVID protocol, and it’s now apparent the Avs have lost a third top-nine forward for the time being.

The 26-year-old Nichushkin has had somewhat of a career renaissance with Colorado after a rough start with the Dallas Stars, the team that drafted him 10th overall in 2013. He’s received Selke votes in back-to-back seasons, scoring 23 goals and 48 points in 120 games from 2019 to 2021 in an Avalanche uniform. Nichushkin had one assist in 15:03 of ice time on Wednesday against the Colorado Avalanche.

The team will now turn to Mikko Rantanen to carry the offensive load in the absence of MacKinnon and Landeskog. They’ll look towards forwards like Andre Burakovsky, Tyson Jost, and a pair or rookies in Alex Newhook and Sampo Ranta to increase production in depth roles to compensate for the loss of Nichushkin.

Blake Comeau Placed On Injured Reserve

  • The Dallas Stars have placed Blake Comeau on injured reserve retroactive to October 7, according to Matthew DeFranks of The Dallas Morning News. The 35-year-old scored just four goals and 14 points in 51 games last season but was still likely to have a spot on the Stars opening night roster if healthy, as a bottom-six defensive option. The team will have to fill that spot and the one belonging to Jason Robertson, who also isn’t currently traveling with the team as they visit the New York Rangers tomorrow night. Both Comeau and Robertson could join the group later on the road trip according to DeFranks. The Stars aren’t set to play their first home game until October 22, the fifth game of the season.

Minor Transactions: 10/12/21

Opening Night of the 2021-22 NHL campaign has finally arrived and all eyes are on the season-opening matchups between the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins and the league’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, and the Vegas Golden Knights. Yet, it has also been a very busy day for “minor” transactions, both the advent of regular NHL recalls and reassignments as well as several notable signings and trades. Keep up with all of these moves right here:

  • AHL trades are not common, but there is already one in the books for this season. The Belleville Senators have announced that they have acquired forward Jake Lucchini from the Laval Rocket for future considerations. Lucchini, 26, spent the past season and a half with Laval, but without much to show for it. The former Michigan Tech standout and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect has yet to make his mark on the pros, but will get another shot with Belleville this season.
  • A KHL trade today also contained some recognizable names. SKA St. Petersburg has acquired former NHL forward Valentin Zykov from Sibir Novosibirsk. The return is another former NHL forward, Vladislav Kamenev, and San Jose Sharks prospect Yegor Spirodonov. Zykov had been playing in Sweden to begin this year, but now that his KHL rights have transferred he has agreed to a one-year deal with SKA. Zykov skated in 15 games with the Vegas Golden Knights just last year, recording four points. Kamenev spent all of last season in St. Petersburg after notching eight points in 38 games with the Colorado Avalanche in 2019-20. Spirodonov, a 2019 selection, has yet to be given much of a chance in the KHL and could be bound for North America next season if he doesn’t earn a greater role with Novosibirsk.
  • Ben Hutton’s late-preseason PTO with the Anaheim Ducks didn’t result in an NHL contract – at least not yet – but the veteran defenseman is remaining with the organization. Hutton has signed an AHL contract with the San Diego Gulls, the team announced. Hutton began last season with the Ducks and that familiarity with the organization combined with the team’s potential seller status could lead to a promotion to an NHL deal at some point this year.
  • After initial rosters were finalized yesterday with a vast number of AHL assignments, at least one team is already switching things up. The Dallas Stars have recalled forwards Joel Kiviranta and Jacob Peterson from AHL Texas and sent fellow forwards Oskar Back and Ty Dellandrea and goaltender Jake Oettinger back in a corresponding move. If Peterson plays in Dallas’ opener on Thursday, it will mark his NHL debut.

Dallas Stars Sign Artem Grushnikov

6:57 pm: PuckPedia reports that Grushnikov’s deal carries a cap hit of $859,000. The structure of the deal is as follows:

2021-22: $750,000 salary, $92,500 signing bonus, $82,500 GP bonus, $80,000 minors salary
2022-23: $750,000 salary, $92,500 signing bonus, $82,500 GP bonus, $80,000 minors salary
2023-24: $800,000 salary, $92,500 signing bonus, $32,500 GP bonus, $80,000 minors salary

11:19 am: The Dallas Stars have signed another top draft pick, inking Artem Grushnikov to a three-year entry-level contract. Just yesterday, the young defenseman was loaned to the Hamilton Bulldogs for the upcoming season, but he isn’t leaving empty-handed.

Grushnikov, 18, was the 48th overall pick in this year’s draft, selected out of the MHL where he tallied five points in 29 games. The 6’2″ defenseman is not known for his offensive upside, but the transition to the OHL should provide him with a little more opportunity on that side of the puck. Selected 16th overall in the 2020 CHL Import Draft, his transition to North America and early entry-level deal bodes well for his future with the Stars organization.

A member of the Russian team that won the Hlinka-Gretzky in 2020, Grushnikov will be an interesting prospect to watch develop this season. The Bulldogs kick things off on Friday against the Oshawa Generals.

Dallas now has their top three draft picks from 2021 under contract, all of which were selected in the top-50. For a team that went all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2020, it was an impressive draft class to accumulate and add to the pipeline.

The Dallas Stars have signed prospect Wyatt Johnston to a three-year entry-level contract. The young forward was selected 23rd overall in the 2021 NHL Draft and is expected to head back to the Windsor Spitfires for the upcoming season. The team has also signed Logan Stankoven to a three-year entry-level deal. Stankoven was picked 47th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft and will be playing for the Kamloops Blazers this season.

Johnston, 18, is one of the OHL prospects that missed an entire year of development in 2020-21, waiting for the league to return from their indefinite COVID suspension. He did get some time in with Hockey Canada at a long camp provided for CHL players with nowhere to go and won a gold medal with the program at the U18 World Juniors, but still missed a great chance to make his mark on the league.

That meant when Dallas selected the 6’1″ center it was based on just 53 appearances at the OHL level, in which he scored just 12 goals and 30 points. That’s not the production most first-round picks have on their resume, but there are huge things expected from Johnston this season as he returns more physically mature than in 2020. A star for the Toronto Marlboros minor program that has produced countless NHL players including first overall picks like Connor McDavid, Rick Nash, John Tavares, and Jack Hughes, Johnston will be a player to watch for the Spitfires this season and already has his entry-level deal inked for whenever he turns pro.

Stankoven, 18, was also on that U18 team that won gold and actually heads into this season with quite a bit more production at the junior level. Though he played just six games with the Blazers last season, Stankoven now has 59 points in 72 WHL games. Though undersized–he stands just 5’8″ 170-lbs–Stankoven plays with a fearlessness that always has him around the net and battling for the puck in the corners. He was ranked 31st among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting before the draft, and very likely would have been a first-round pick had he measured in a few inches taller. That small frame will always be an obstacle for Stankoven, but it hasn’t stopped him from producing at any level in the past.

Should both players return to junior, their contracts will slide forward, not burning the first year of the entry-level deals.
